Earlier Pat Cummins and Adam Zampa dominated with the ball taking three wickets each, while Aaron Finch (66) and David Warner (89*) hit the fifties in the chase to wrap things up for the 5-time world champions.
Earlier, Afghanistan won the toss and capitulated for 207 in just 38.2 overs. Neither of their openers was able to post anything on the board. Both of them were removed by Mitchell Starc and Cummins just in five runs.
Afghanistan were shaky from the start of their innings, and losing two early wickets made that worse. However, in the third wicket stand, Rahmat Shah and Hashmatullah Shahidi added 51 runs in their bid to turn the things around.
But both of them were removed by leg-spinner Zampa though, before they could mount an effective comeback. Mohammad Nabi failed to impress in his first game before he was run-out for 7.
Afghanistan were soon 77/5 and looking down the barrel but their lower middle order and lower order batsmen saved some face as Gulbadin Naib, Najibullah Zadran and Rashid Khan scored 31, 51 and 27 respectively to post a respectable total. Eventually, they ended up scoring 207, which still proved an easy target for the Aussies.
It helped surely that nearly half the the target was collected in a 96-run opening stand between Finch and the returning Warner. Finch was the more aggressive of the two before he fell for 66. Usman Khawaja and Steve Smith also had time in the middle scoring 15 and 18 respectively. But a more circumspect Warner than fans are used to stayed till the end, that saw Glenn Maxwell in his no-nonsense style thrash the first ball he faced over cover for a boundary and seal the victory for his country.
Mujeeb Ur Rahman, Gulbadin and Rashid took one wicket each for Afghanistan. Warner was the man of the match for his unbeaten 89 off 114 balls with eight fours.
