Another cop dies from coronavirus in city
Another member of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) died from coronavirus on Friday.
With the latest one, four policemen died after contracting the virus in the country.
The deceased was identified as Najir Uddin, sub-inspector of Special Branch and hailed from Kajitola village in Bhangura upaizla of Pabna district.
Sohel Rana, additional inspector general (AIG) (media) of Police headquarters, said Najir’s coronavirus infection was detected on April 25 and he had been undergoing treatment at Rajarbagh Central Police Hospital.
He breathed his last on Friday.
The body was sent to his village home following a namaz-e-janaza at Rajarbagh.
Three other policemen died from coronavirus on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday.
12 members of Rab and police among 17 infected with coronavirus in Keraniganj
Seventeen more people including eight Rab members and four policemen were diagnosed with coronavirus in the last 24 hours till Thursday, raising the number of confirmed cases to 151 in Keraniganj, one of the hotspots of coronavirus infection.
Dr Mir Mobarak Hossain, health officer of Upazila Health Complex, said ten members of Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) and four policemen of Keraniganj Model Police Station were among the infected ones.
Of the infected people, four are from Jinjira, eight from Teghuria, two from Shubhaddya, one each from Kalindi, Aganagar and Basta areas of the upaizla, he said.
PCR machine, 8 ventilators lying unused for 10 months in Sirajganj
A Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) machine used to detect coronavirus and other complicated diseases, and eight ventilators are lying packed at Shaheed M Monsur Ali Medical College in Sirajganj though the country’s health sector is struggling to tackle the coronavirus pandemic with its limited resources.
The medical college authorities have sought a new PCR machine from the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) even though the previous machine and ventilators bought eight months back remained unpacked, said Project Director of Dr Krishna Kumar Pal.
Last year, the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) launched an investigation into the irregularities in purchasing the medical equipment for the medical college spending nearly Tk 250 crore.
Although the ACC is yet to conclude its probe but it has no objection to using the PCR machines and ventilators, Dr Krishna said quoting the investigation officer of the ACC.

Man dies with respiratory problem in Bagerhat
A man, who had been suffering from respiratory problem, died at his home at Singjor village in Morelganj upazila on Thursday night.
Civil Surgeon Dr Humayun Kabir said the man had been suffering from respiratory problem and used to take treatment from Priojpur district.
The man died around 10 pm at his residence, he said.
Dr Kamal Hossain Mufti, health officer of Morelganj Upazila Health Complex, said a medical team collected the samples of the deceased in the night and sent for lab test on Friday.
The family of the deceased and residents of four more houses in the area were asked to maintain home quarantine, he said.
Besides, local administration on Thursday put 50 houses at Boro Badura village in Morelganj upazila under lockdown as a man tested positive for Covid-19 after his death with fever and cold.
7 coronavirus patients recover; discharged from hospitals in Kishoreganj
Seven Covid-19 patients, including three physicians, recovered and were discharged from different hospitals of the district on Thursday.
Kishoreganj Civil Surgeon Dr Mujibur Rahman, said the seven people including three physicians and one policeman, were discharged from Shaheed Syed Nazrul Islam Medical College Hospital and Bhairab Upazila Health Complex as they were found to be negative for the virus twice.
Those made recovery areDr Aleya Ferdous Tonni, Dr Tanvir Rahman of Itna Upazila Health Complex, Dr Kishore Kumar Dhar of Bhairab Upazila Helath Complex, sub-inspector Delwar Hossain Patwari of Bhairab Police Station, Jaba Bhowmik, 60 of Sadar upazila, Rocky, 22 and Aulia Akter, 25 of Ashtagram upazila.
With this, a total of 14 people made recovery from coronavirus in the district.
Coronavirus: Russian PM Mishustin tests positive for virus
Russian Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin has gone to hospital after he was diagnosed with coronavirus, reports The BBC.
Another cop tests positive for coronavirus in Chattogram
Another policeman was diagnosed with coronavirus.
With the latest one, total 11 policemen have so far been infected with the virus, said Chattogram Civil Surgeon Dr Sheikh Fazle Rabbi.
Abu Bakar Siddique, deputy police commissioner of Dampara Police Lines, said eight traffic police, two policemen from Dampara Police Lines and a policeman, who served in Khulshi area of the city were found infected with the virus and they were given treatment at an isolating center.
The district has so far confirmed 72 coronavirus cases and five deaths.
