4 die with fever, cold in Cumilla
Four people have died with fever and cold at Cumilla Medical College and Hospital in the last 24 hours till Thursday night.
Dr Sajeda Khatun, assistant director of Cumilla Medical College and Hospital, said two men and two women, who were undergoing treatment at the hospital, died.
A total of 109 people have died at the hospital since April 1. Of them 14 were Covid-19 patients while the 95 people died with fever and cold.
Now, 114 people are taking treatment at the hospital and of them 42 are Covid-19 patients, she said.
Water level of rivers rises in Cumilla
The water level in the rivers of Cumilla has risen due to incessant rain for the last few days and water from upstream, sparking fears of flood.
According to sources, the water level of various rivers in the district, including Gumti, has risen at an alarming rate due to the upstream water coming down from India.
Due to the sudden rise of water in the river, the cultivable land of Gumti char areas has been submerged in water.
It was found during a recent visit that water level is rising along with strong current in the river. The low-lying areas along the river have been inundated by rains and upstream water and most of the arable land in the char areas have submerged.
Meanwhile, erosion has occurred in riverine areas in different upazilas due to the rising water level and currents in the Gumti River.
Ismail Bhuiyan, an official of Cumilla district meteorological office, said that 361mm rainfall was recorded in the district till June 19 since the first week of the month.
Abu Yusuf Bhuiyan, an official of the Water Development Board, said that the water level has risen due to rain and upstream water. The char areas of different parts have been flooded.
However, there is still no forecast of flood, he said adding that they are monitoring the situation.
