Hong Kong woos tourists with air tickets and vouchers
Hong Kong will give away air tickets and vouchers to woo tourists back to the international financial hub, racing to catch up with other popular travel destinations in a fierce regional competition.
During the pandemic, the city largely aligned itself with mainland China’s “zero-COVID” strategy and has relaxed its entry rules months slower than rivals such as Singapore, Japan and Taiwan. Even after it reopened its border with mainland China in January, tourism recovery was sluggish.
On Thursday, Chief Executive John Lee launched a tourism campaign “Hello Hong Kong,” saying the city will offer 500,000 free air tickets to welcome tourists from around the world in what he called “probably the world's biggest welcome ever”.
“Hong Kong is now seamlessly connected to the mainland of China and the whole international world and there will be no isolation, no quarantine," he said at a ceremony. “This is the perfect timing for tourists, business travelers, and investors from near and far to come and say, ‘Hello, Hong Kong.’”
Under the campaign, most of the plane tickets — worth 2 billion Hong Kong dollars ($255 million) — will come from three Hong Kong-based airlines through various promotional activities, including lucky draws, “buy one, get one free” promotions and games. The project will begin in March and last about six months, said Fred Lam, CEO of the Airport Authority.
“We hope those who secure the air tickets can bring two or three more relatives and friends to the city. Although we are just giving away 500,000 air tickets, we believe this can help bring Hong Kong over 1.5 million visitors,” Lam said.
The airlines will distribute the tickets in phases, with the Southeast Asian markets set to benefit in the first stage, he said.
An additional 80,000 air tickets will be given away to Hong Kong residents in the summer, Lam said. Those living in the Greater Bay Area will also benefit from the policy that offers over 700,000 tickets in total. The Greater Bay Area is a Chinese government initiative to link Hong Kong with neighboring mainland cities, including the technology and finance hub of Shenzhen and the manufacturing powerhouses of Dongguan and Foshan.
Visitors can also enjoy special offers and vouchers among other incentives in the city, Lee said.
Hong Kong received 56 million visitors in 2019 — over seven times its population — before the pandemic began. But its strict COVID-19 restrictions have been keeping visitors away over the past three years, devastating the tourism sector and its economy. The city’s GDP last year fell 3.5 % from 2021, according to the government’s provisional data.
In the past few months, it finally dropped its mandatory hotel quarantine rule and PCR tests for incoming travelers, resulting in a slight increase in arrival figures. Still, its 2022 visitor numbers were just 1% of the 2019 level.

In contrast to the Pulsar NS160 that was released five years ago, the Pulsar N160 does not have anything in common with it, as it comes with a new engine, frame, gearbox, and an edgy design that it shares with the Bajaj Pulsar N250. This engine is unrivaled in terms of smoothness in the Pulsar series. The 5-speed transmission is smooth and responsive and complements the engine’s refinement. It offers plenty of torque at low and mid-range speeds and a wide range of torque for stronger acceleration.

Can You Travel Abroad Without Buying US Dollars?
With the price of the US dollar skyrocketing, Bangladeshi travellers are directly affected by fluctuating exchange rates. Should you then drop your travel plans until the price of the US dollar becomes stable? Is there any way to deal with this dollar crisis and still travel? Let’s look at some alternative ways to travel abroad without purchasing US dollars.
WHY YOU SHOULD CONSIDER ALTERNATIVES TO BUYING US DOLLARS
Traveling abroad can be an exciting and enriching experience, but it can also be expensive. One of the biggest expenses of international travel is the cost of converting Bangladeshi taka into the currency of the country you are planning to visit. Travellers usually carry US dollars when visiting any foreign country.
The recent price hike of US dollars has made the exchange rate high regardless of the base currency. Therefore, it would be wise and cost-effective for travellers to consider the alternative ways.

WAYS TO TRAVEL ABROAD WITHOUT BUYING US DOLLARS
· USE CREDIT CARD
Bangladesh Bank advises taking dollars through an international card (dollar-endorsed VISA/Mastercard) in case of traveling abroad. It has given this advice due to rising exchange rates and supply shortages in banks and open markets. The difference between the cash dollar price in the open market and the bank is currently over Tk 10.
It is cheaper to endorse dollars on your credit card. In the current situation, it may save you around Tk 5 to 10 per US dollar. However, currently, the exchange rate for cash and card endorsement is the same, which is Tk 106 (as of January 12).
According to a news in August 2022, when it cost up to Tk 109.50 to buy one US dollar in the open market, the price of buying dollars through a bank or card went up to Tk 95.

“This is why we are recommending travellers to request their banks to ask for travelcards instead of asking for cash, so that they pay less,” Bangladesh Bank spokesperson Sirajul Islam told media at that time.
· BUY THE LOCAL CURRENCY OF YOUR TRAVEL DESTINATION
Buying the local currency of the country where you are traveling can reduce your exchange cost. The exchange rates of different currencies against the US dollar have also gone up. So, you can check if buying your destination country’s currency reduces the cost or not. For example, if you are travelling to India, buying rupees from Bangladesh may give you more currency than converting to the US dollar. You

· TAKE ADVANTAGE OF FOREIGN ATMS
When you are in a foreign country, it can be more cost-effective to withdraw cash from an ATM than to convert currency at a bank or currency exchange shops. If you have a dollar-endorsed card from Bangladesh, you can withdraw money in the country you are traveling to using the local ATMs.
However, check with your bank to ensure that your card will work in the country you are planning to visit and see if there are fees for using foreign ATMs.

Everyone entering the nation needs to provide documentation of a complete immunization record or a letter of proof that they have recovered from Covid-19 infection in the last six months. Travelers who are unvaccinated must provide documentation explaining why they cannot receive a vaccination.
Airlines are required to check these documents before boarding passengers and are responsible for returning those who do not have the proper documentation to their point of origin.
The guidelines go into effect at the same time that China's border reopens following nearly three years of closures and restrictions.

Travelling 100 countries with the 9th weakest passport in the world
Maliha Fairooz, or “Maliha Around the World” as her travel blog is called, has been exploring the world on her own with a Bangladeshi passport. She promotes travel culture among Bangladeshi youth by sharing her experiences on her blog.
On November 25, 2022, Maliha reached her 100th country – the Republic of Ghana. On the occasion, she made a long post on her Facebook page, recounting the challenges, joys and discrimination she experienced while travelling as a “brown, Muslim, Bangladeshi woman”.
In Maliha’s own words:
“100 at countries, 6 continents, mostly solo with the 9th worst passport in the world. What a wild ride it’s been! I have dreamt of this moment for as long as I can remember and whilst it’s taken 1 year longer than planned – I am still so grateful to have been able to make it.

Modern day travel as it stands is extremely neo colonial – built to favour those from wealthy countries with a strong imperialist and colonial past. From passport privilege to race privilege I have seen my more privileged travel friends waltz in and out of countries without any accountability or difficulty, whilst I have been detained, deported, put in immigration jail, interrogated, searched, subjugated, harassed and simply made to feel like I was not welcome by the authorities in spite of fulfilling every single entry requirement in many countries – simply because I am a brown Muslim woman who holds a Bangladeshi passport. I dream of a world where the colour of my skin and the place of my birth are irrelevant but sadly the reality could not be further than this.
