The first batch of family tents was handed over to BDRCS at a ceremony atUNHCR’s warehouse in Cox’s Bazar on Thursday.
The tents are fire resistant and worth approximately $2million, UNHCR said.
Hundreds of thousands of Bangladeshis have been displaced across Bangladesh, particularly in the northern, north eastern, and coastal districts, following non-stop heavy rains and rising river levels earlier in the month.
UNHCR received a request for help through the BDRCS and is happy to be able to support Bangladeshi families who have been displaced from their homes, it said.
“UNHCR has pre-positioned emergency shelters at its warehouses in Cox’s
Bazar and Chittagong, as part of its contingency preparedness work for the
Rohingya refugee response,” said UNHCR’s head of operations and sub office in Cox’s Bazar, Marin Din Kajdomcaj.
“However, we can see that many Bangladeshi families in Cox’s Bazar and other parts of the country are suffering because they’ve been displaced by the monsoon rains. We are in a position to make this small contribution and to extend our assistance to them in their time of need.”
