Two local social clubs--Choukighata and Bangkhari Pragati Club--jointly organised the contest in the club playground.
The cow owned by Sheikh Rasel Mia of Ghoshail village of Nawabganj was adjourned the champion while the cow of Liaquat Ali of Palra village in Manikganj secured the second position from and Khabaspur village’s Sattar Beepari’s cow secured the third position.
A total of 30 cows from different parts of Nawabganj and Manikganj took part in the traditional cow race.
Spectators who came to enjoy the race said the race was arranged on a regular basis in the past, but now it became irregular as cows for the race are hard to arrange.
Necessary initiatives should be taken to keep this traditional race continued as a rural heritage.
Bankkhuri Club President Motaleb Biswas said the traditional cow race has been organising in this village for some two hundred years. “As time goes on, it has now become harder to arrange cows for the race and contestants’ interest has decreased.”
To keep the rural heritage alive, he said they will try to organise the race once a year.
“Following this year’s success, we will organize the same next year,” he hopped.
Prize giving ceremony was held at the end of the contest in presence of the eminent personalities of the village.
