A man was killed and at least four others injured in a clash between two groups of Awami League on the road near Gulistan Golap Shah Mazar around 6pm on Friday.
The identity of the deceased couldn't be known immediately.
The injured were identified as Noman Hossain Rony, 32, a Jubo League activist from Keraniganj Model Police Station, Mokasher, 23, a daily wage labourer, Ariful Islam, 18, a mason, and Md Zubair Hossain, 16, a school student.
Keraniganj Model Police Station Jubo League joint convener Saikat Hasan Biplob, who was with injured Rony at Dhaka Medical College Hospital, said they are supporters of South Keraniganj Thana Awami League President Shahin Ahmed. He came to the peace rally of Awami League in Baitul Mukarram Mosque area with the leaders and activists. After completing the rally, he left for Keraniganj. When they reached Gulistan Golap Shah mazar area, supporters of Awami League leader Advocate Kamrul Islam chased them from behind. At one point, he was stabbed randomly with a sharp weapon from behind.
Later, they were taken to the Emergency Department of Dhaka Medical College Hospital with injuries.
He said there was a scuffle between supporters and activists of Kamrul Islam at the rally.
Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) police camp in-charge (inspector) Md Bachchu Mia confirmed the death of an unidentified person.
He said the youth had sustained a sharp weapon injury on his left leg. The condition of the other four is also critical. They are being treated in the emergency department.
