Portugal has expressed its “full support for Lebanon” following the recent ceasefire, as both countries discussed efforts to restore stability in the region. Lebanon’s Foreign Minister Youssef Rajji met his Portuguese counterpart Paulo Rangel for talks on the situation in Lebanon and rapid developments in the region, according to Lebanon’s foreign ministry. The two sides also discussed ongoing efforts being made to “restore stability” after the ceasefire.Rangel conveyed Portugal’s “full support for Lebanon, for its sovereignty and the unity of its territories”, the ministry said. He also welcomed the ceasefire and the negotiating path Lebanon intends to pursue, describing it as “a real opportunity” to reach a “comprehensive and sustainable solution” that would “enhance stability and put an end to the conflict”.

Two brothers were killed and another individual was critically injured in a mob attack after an eight-year-old missing girl was found dead in Sadar upazila of Manikganj on Thursday night. The deceased were identified as Pannu Mia, 48, an auto-rickshaw driver, and his brother Fazlu Rahman, 28. Pannu’s son Nazmul sustained critical injuries in the incident. According to locals, Atika, daughter of Dudul Mia of Bonparil, went missing around 5:00pm on Thursday, prompting her family to launch a frantic search, including announcements over loudspeakers and appeals on social media. A cousin of the victim later claimed she saw Nayeem, 15, younger son of Pannu Mia, taking the girl away. When confronted by locals, Nayeem allegedly confessed and indicated that the girl was in a nearby maize field. Around 10:00pm, locals rushed to the field and found the girl dead with her hands and legs tied, triggering outrage in the area. Nayeem managed to flee from the scene. Angry locals then swooped on his house and detained Pannu, Fazlu and Nazmul. They later gave them a good beating, leaving the former two dead on the spot and the latter injured. The injured was taken to hospital. On information, police rushed in and brought the situation under control. Superintendent of Police of the district Md Sarwar Alam said police were investigating the incident and had deployed additional forces in the area.

Five more people have died from measles and measles-like symptoms in the 24 hours until 8:00am Friday, pushing the death toll to 211 this year. Of the latest fatalities, three were confirmed measles cases, according to the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS). During the same period, 127 confirmed measles patients and 1,115 suspected cases were reported across the country. The DGHS said a total of 13,898 suspected patients have so far been hospitalised. Of them, 11,243 have recovered and been discharged. Division-wise data showed Barishal recorded the highest number of suspected measles-related deaths in the last 24 hours with two fatalities, while Barguna district also reported two deaths. The DGHS added that between March 15 and April 17, the total number of confirmed measles deaths stood at 37, while 174 deaths remained classified as suspected ones.

A disturbing scene of animal cruelty has emerged at a roadside pet market set up on a street in a residential area at Mirpur-1 amid intense heat in Dhaka. Cats and various birds are being kept in the open for sale in a manner that is not only disorganised but clearly inhumane.

Two brothers drowned in a pond in Singra upazila of Natore on Friday. The victims were identified as Tamim, 12, and Fahim, 13, sons of expatriate Abdul Momin from Bara Adimpur village. According to locals, the two boys went to bathe in a pond beside their house around noon but went missing. Family members began searching when they did not return, and they were found floating in the pond around 2:30pm, said Officer-in-Charge of Singra Police Station Rafiqul Islam. The two brothers were taken to the Upazila Health Complex, where the on-duty doctor declared them dead, he said. A pall of gloom descended on the area following the tragic incident. The brothers had been living with their mother at their maternal grandparents’ home while their father works abroad.

The BNP has started the final selection process for nominating candidates for the reserved women’s seats in the 13th Jatiya Sangsad, with aspirants appearing before the party’s nomination board. The nomination board began interviewing the aspirants on Friday afternoon at the BNP Chairman’s Gulshan office. BNP Senior Joint Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi told reporters that interviews of those who collected and submitted nomination forms for the reserved seats started in the afternoon. “As per the party constitution, the nomination board is headed by BNP Chairman Tarique Rahman, and its members are from the party’s standing committee,” he said. On the first day, candidates from Rajshahi, Khulna, Barishal, Rangpur and Faridpur divisions are being interviewed. More than 400 aspirants are taking part in the interviews, Rizvi said. He said interviews for candidates from Dhaka, Chattogram, Sylhet, Cumilla and Mymensingh divisions will begin at 3:00pm on Saturday. Earlier, the Election Commission on April 8 announced the schedule for the reserved women’s seat election. According to the schedule, the deadline for submission of nomination papers is April 21, while scrutiny will take place on April 22 and 23. Appeals against scrutiny decisions can be filed on April 26 and will be disposed of on April 27 and 28. BNP has political track record of managing crises, achieving growth: Titumir Election symbols will be allotted on April 30, and voting will be held on May 12. The EC said all preparations have been taken to ensure a free, fair and peaceful election. According to seat distribution, the BNP-led alliance will get 36 seats, Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami alliance 13 seats, and independents one seat. Since early afternoon, BNP aspirants and their supporters gathered in front of the party Chairman’s Gulshan office. Security personnel allowed only the candidates to enter the premises. Inside the office, a designated waiting area has been arranged for the aspirants. Highlighting the criteria for nomination, Rizvi said the party will consider the contributions of women leaders, especially their role during the last 15-16 years of political struggle. He mentioned that many women leaders faced harassment, including cases, attacks, and intimidation during that period. The BNP leader also said educational background, ability to speak in Parliament, and knowledge of lawmaking will be taken into account in selecting the final candidates. Rizvi expressed hope that the party will make proper evaluations in choosing the women members of parliament.

Myanmar’s former President Win Myint has been released as part of a sweeping prisoner amnesty announced by newly inaugurated President Min Aung Hlaing, state media reported Friday. The pardon, issued to mark the country’s traditional New Year, covers more than 4,500 prisoners, though it remains unclear how many political detainees are included. There was no immediate indication that detained former leader Aung San Suu Kyi has been freed. Win Myint, a close ally of Suu Kyi and elected president in 2018, was arrested during the military takeover on February 1, 2021, and later sentenced to multiple prison terms that were reduced in 2023. State broadcaster MRTV confirmed that he was released from a prison in Bago region under the amnesty order. The announcement came as buses carrying freed prisoners arrived outside Yangon’s Insein Prison, where families gathered to welcome detainees. Among those released was filmmaker Shin Daewe, previously sentenced to life imprisonment under a counterterrorism law. Officials said the amnesty includes more than 4,300 domestic prisoners and nearly 180 foreigners who will be deported. Under the terms of the pardon, reduced sentences apply broadly, with provisions that freed inmates could be required to serve remaining terms if they reoffend. A senior military official also indicated that Aung San Suu Kyi is expected to be transferred to house arrest, although she remains under multiple convictions linked to the 2021 coup. European Union officials held talks in Budapest on Friday with representatives of election winner Péter Magyar, focusing on releasing billions of euros in frozen funds and advancing cooperation ahead of his government taking office next month. The discussions include efforts to unlock around €17 billion ($20 billion) in EU aid withheld during the tenure of outgoing Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, as well as coordination on key issues such as financial support for Ukraine. European Commission spokesperson Paula Pinho said preliminary talks are aimed at ensuring swift action once the new government assumes office, noting that “the clock is ticking” on several urgent matters. The EU froze funding to Hungary over concerns about corruption, democratic backsliding and judicial independence during Orbán’s 16-year rule. Both Brussels and Magyar’s team have since prioritised unlocking the funds to support Hungary’s struggling economy. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said reforms are needed to restore the rule of law, align with EU values and enable access to the funds. Magyar, whose Tisza party secured a parliamentary supermajority, has pledged to pursue reforms in judicial independence, media freedom and anti-corruption measures to meet EU conditions. He has also signalled support for a previously agreed €90 billion EU loan package for Ukraine, which Orbán had blocked. A namaz-e-janaza for Commerce Secretary Mahbubur Rahman, who passed away on Friday morning, was held after Jummah prayers at the Secretary Apartment Complex in the capital’s Eskaton area. Commerce Minister Khandakar Abdul Muktadir, State Minister for Public Administration Md Abdul Bari, Cabinet Secretary Dr Nasimul Ghani and Senior Secretary of the Land Ministry ASM Saleh Ahmed, among others, attended the janaza. Senior government officials, business leaders, public and family members were also present. Special prayers were offered seeking eternal peace for the departed soul. Recalling his brief working experience with the late secretary, the commerce minister said he had the opportunity to work with Mahbubur Rahman for about two months and found him to be a sincere and efficient officer devoted to his duties and the country. Mahbubur Rahman passed away around 6:25am on Friday while undergoing treatment at a city hospital. He was admitted to the hospital on April 13 after falling ill, with his platelet count dropping to a critical level. During treatment, he was diagnosed with malaria while under close observation. According to family sources, he will be laid to rest in Gacha area of Gazipur.

A mobile court has sentenced 15 fishermen to different jail terms – ranging from 15 days to three months – for catching jatka in violation of the ongoing ban on fishing in the Padma-Meghna sanctuary area of Chandpur. The Department of Fisheries, Bangladesh Coast Guard and River Police conducted a joint drive in the sanctuary area of Sadar upazila from on Thursday afternoon, said Assistant Fisheries Officer Md Mizanur Rahman. During the drive, 22 fishermen were detained while catching Hilsa fry defying the ban. Five illegal current nets and five fishing boats were also seized. Of the detainees, 15 were sentenced to different jail terms through a mobile court. Fine was also slapped on some of them. Besides, six of the detainees were released on undertakings as they were minors, while another sick fisherman was released after realising Tk 500 as fine. The convicted fishermen were later sent to jail, said Inspector (Investigation) of Chandpur Sadar Model Police Station Mintu Dutta.

Sylhet is grappling with relentless load shedding – mainly triggered by the global energy crisis following the Middle East conflict – disrupting daily life and putting SSC candidates under mounting pressure just days before their exams begin on April 21. Officials said the crisis stems from a shortfall in electricity supply from the national grid due to reduced generation amid the global energy crisis, with no sign of immediate improvement. Residents and traders said electricity disruptions continue throughout the day and night. According to officials of the Bangladesh Power Development Board (BPDB) in Sylhet, there was a demand of 170 megawatts of electricity on Thursday in district, against which only 130 megawatts were supplied, leaving a deficit of 40 megawatts. However, common people claim that the real picture is far worse than official figures suggest. Many areas reportedly experienced more than seven hours without electricity within a 12-hour period on Thursday, till evening. Life on hold: 50,000 Rangpur people pay price for missing bridge The situation has become particularly alarming for Secondary School Certificate (SSC) examinees, who are struggling to study amid long power cuts and intense heat. Zakaria Talukder, a resident of Golapganj upazila, said students are facing serious difficulties as electricity remains unavailable for hours at a stretch. “If we get power for one hour, we stay in darkness for the next two,” he said. Businesses are also reeling from the power crisis. Traders said shops are already required to close by 7:00pm every day, and frequent outages throughout the day are further cutting into operating hours, leading to losses. Road woes deepen in Beanibazar as 250km fall into disrepair Matiur Rahman, a businessman, said frequent load shedding has pushed many factories to the brink of closure. “To keep production running, many are being forced to use diesel-powered generators, but diesel is also in short supply. As a result, costs have risen significantly without any increase in output.” Anwar Hossain, owner of a shopping complex at Zindabazar of the city, echoed Matiur Rahman. “We open late in the morning and close early in the evening. With constant load shedding, we are losing a significant portion of business time,” he said. Sources said the ongoing energy crisis, exacerbated by fuel shortages linked to the Middle East conflict, has led to limited electricity generation nationwide. Officials warned that load shedding could worsen if fuel supply is not stabilised. Chief Engineer of BPDB Sylhet division Mohammad Imam Hossain said demand has surged with rising temperatures, but generation has not kept pace. “As supply remains insufficient, load shedding is unavoidable. There is no immediate prospect of improvement unless national generation increases,” he added. Fuel crisis hits Rangpur, motorists spend hours in queues Since early April, load shedding has intensified across Sylhet, particularly in rural areas where outages last between six to eight hours daily. While urban areas receive somewhat scheduled power cuts, rural areas are experiencing prolonged and unpredictable outages. The government has enforced sweeping austerity measures such as early closure of shops, revised office hours, and partial online education to manage the situation, but these steps have yet to ease public suffering. Residents say the combined impact of extreme heat and persistent outages has made daily life increasingly difficult, especially for children, the elderly, and the sick.  

At least 10 people were injured in a clash between two groups of people over an unpaid tea bill in Shailkupa municipality of Jhenaidah on Friday morning. The injured include Nayeb Ali, son of Kamal Sheikh; Ripon Hossain, son of Murad Ali; Rubel Hossain, son of Jamal Uddin; Tamal Hossain, son of Abdur Rahim; Abdur Razzak, son of Abul Hossain; and Ripon Hossain. They were admitted to Shailkupa Upazila Health Complex. Officer-in-Charge of Shailkupa Police Station Humayun Kabir Mollah said Ripon Hossain went to a tea stall owned by Shahjahan in the Khaldharpara area of the municipality in the morning. When the shopkeeper refused to serve him tea on credit due to previous unpaid dues, an argument broke out between them, which later turned into a scuffle, he said. The OC said locals from both sides later joined the altercation with locally made weapons, triggering a clash that left at least 10 people injured.

Day and night temperatures may rise slightly across the country, the Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD) said on Friday. The highest temperature on Thursday was 36.5 degrees Celsius in Rangamati and Kumarkhali in Khulna, while Dhaka recorded 34.2 degrees Celsius. Meanwhile, rain or thundershowers accompanied by temporary gusty wind and lightning are likely at one or two places over Dhaka, Mymensingh and Sylhet divisions, with isolated hailstorms, in the next 24 hours commencing at 9:00am on Friday. Weather elsewhere in the country may remain mainly dry with a temporarily partly cloudy sky. According to the BMD, a trough of low lies over West Bengal and adjoining areas, while a seasonal low is positioned over the South Bay.

The Bangladesh China Chamber of Commerce & Industry (BCCCI) has expressed deep condolence at the death of Commerce Secretary Mahbubur Rahman. In a Facebook post, BCCCI President Mohd Khorshed Alam said the business community has lost a wise, competent and compassionate guardian whose guidance and integrity will be deeply missed. He expressed heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family. “May Almighty Allah grant him eternal peace in Jannah and give strength to his family to bear this irreparable loss,” he added. Mahbubur Rahman breathed his last around 6:25am on Friday while undergoing treatment at a private hospital in the capital. He was 58. He was admitted to the hospital on April 13 following a sharp drop in blood platelet levels. He was later diagnosed with malaria. Mahbubur Rahman was an officer of the 13th BCS (Customs and Excise) cadre.

A worsening fuel crisis has gripped Rangpur, leaving motorcyclists and private car owners stranded in long queues for hours as petrol pumps struggle with limited supply across the district. According to local sources, around 350 petrol pumps operate in the city and eight upazilas of the district, but more than half of them are not supplying fuel regularly. A visit to several petrol pumps on Friday morning found severe shortages of petrol and octane, with many displaying “no fuel” signs. At the pumps still operating, customers were being rationed to a maximum of Tk 200 worth of fuel each. A similar situation has been seen across eight upazilas, including Mithapukur, Pirganj, Pirgachha, Kaunia, Badarganj, Taraganj and Gangachara, where many people said they waited 10 to 12 hours without receiving fuel. Affected drivers said the shortage is disrupting urgent work, with office-goers, businesspeople and ambulance services among the worst affected. Motorcyclist Sohel Mia said he waited for two hours at a pump in the morning but was later told that fuel had run out, forcing him to look for another station. Private car owners reported similar experiences. Pump managers said each station is currently receiving only 3,000 to 4,000 litres of petrol-octane per day, which is far below the demand, forcing them to ration supply. Authorities said the crisis has arisen due to a mismatch between supply and demand triggered by the Middle East conflict, adding that efforts are underway to stabilise the situation.

Foreign ministers from Turkiye, Egypt, Pakistan and Saudi Arabia are set to meet on the sidelines of a three-day forum beginning in Antalya on Friday, where talks are expected to focus on the ongoing Iran war and the blockade of the Strait of Hormuz. The schedule for the meeting has not yet been disclosed. Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif is also due to attend the forum and is expected to hold a meeting with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan on the sidelines, as Islamabad seeks to facilitate a second round of peace talks between the United States and Iran. Two people were killed and three others injured when a pickup van crashed into a stationary truck in Sadar upazila of Kushtia on Friday morning. The deceased were identified as Sifayet, 35, son of Abdul Haque of Bangalipara area under Sadar upazila of Narail district, and Bikash, 45, son of Bimal of Sadhukhali area. Three horses being transported on the pickup also died in the accident, said Abu Obaid, Officer-in-Charge of Kushtia Highway Police Station. The injured are pickup driver Nazmul, 37, and passengers Tamim, 14, and Zia, 45. They were admitted to Kushtia General Hospital. Police said the pickup van, carrying horses and heading towards Narail, hit the rear of the truck parked by the roadside at Bittipara around 6:30am. Sifayet died on the spot, while Bikash succumbed to his injuries at hospital.

Bus workers enforced an indefinite strike on short-distance routes in Kushtia on Friday morning to press home a two-point demand, causing suffering for passengers. Bus services on all short-distance routes from the district remained suspended since 5:00am, forcing passengers to rely on alternative modes of transport and pay higher fares to reach their destinations. Services on the Kushtia-Meherpur and Kushtia-Pragpur routes were halted. Buses on several other routes, including Kushtia-Khulna-Jashore, Kushtia-Rajbari, Kushtia-Barishal, Kushtia-Rajshahi and Kushtia-Pabna-Sirajganj, also remained off the road. However, long-distance buses to Dhaka are operating as usual. Earlier, Kushtia District Motor Workers Union announced the strike on Thursday evening. Its President Mahabul Haque said both bus and minibus owners’ and workers’ associations operate vehicles on the Kushtia-Khulna-Jashore route, but workers’ association was not receiving certain facilities. He said meetings were held with the owners’ group over two demands and an ultimatum was issued to meet them by April 15. The demands are ensuring equal facilities for workers as enjoyed by owners in the transport sector and allowing a bus operated under the workers’ association to run on the Kushtia-Khulna route. As the demands went unheeded, bus and minibus operations were halted indefinitely from Friday morning, Mahabul said, adding that workers of buses from the owners’ association also joined them in the strike. Around 10:30am, Kushtia District Bus-Minibus Owners’ Group General Secretary Rafiqul Islam said transport workers had placed the demands one week ago. He said as the demands were not met, bus operations on all routes were suspended from Friday morning.

Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer and Leader of the Opposition Dr Shafiqur Rahman on Friday said his party will support the government on all just causes while firmly opposing injustice and any actions that undermine people’s rights. Speaking at the District and Metropolitan Ameer Conference of the party at Al-Falah Auditorium in the capital, he said Jamaat’s stance is “clear” on issues of public interest. “We will support the government on all just causes, but will stand as a barrier in case of injustice and any actions that deprive people of their rights, wherever they occur.” The Jamaat chief said his party rejects what he called “deception and fraud” surrounding the referendum. He urged the government to accept the verdict of the referendum, saying his party will extend full cooperation in its implementation. Shafiqur Rahman criticised the handling of the post-July political transition, alleging that the interim government failed to ensure a credible and acceptable transfer of power through the election. He also questioned the credibility of the latest parliamentary election, claiming it was “engineered” and failed to reflect public expectations. The Jamaat ameer voiced concerns over governance, alleging politicisation in key sectors, rising prices of essentials, energy shortages and increasing public hardship. He reiterated that Jamaat will continue to work with the people and raise public concerns both inside and outside parliament. Senior party leaders, including nayeb-e-ameers, the secretary general, assistant secretaries general, central executive council members and district and metropolitan leaders, were present at the conference.

 A United People’s Democratic Front (UPDF) leader was killed and his two sisters were injured in a gun attack on their house in Kutukchhari area under Sadar upazila of Rangamati on Friday morning. The deceased, Dharmasingh Chakma, was the vice president of the central unit of Democratic Youth Forum, the youth wing of UPDF. His two sisters – Kripasona Chakma and Bhagya Sona Chakma – also sustained bullet injuries in the attack. According to UPDF sources, Dharmasingh Chakma was staying at his home in Kutukchhari when an armed group of 19-20 people allegedly from the Jana Samhati Samiti (JSS) surrounded the house around 6:00am. As he attempted to flee, the attackers opened fire, leaving him dead on the spot. His sisters were also injured in the incident, the UPDF claimed. However, there was no statement from the JSS regarding the allegation. Superintendent of Police of the district Muhammad Abdur Rakib said law enforcement teams were sent to the spot immediately after the incident. He added that legal action will be taken after the investigation. Following the attack, activists of the Democratic Youth Forum blocked the Rangamati-Khagrachhari road at Kutukchhari by placing tree trunks and tyres, disrupting vehicular movement. A tense situation was prevailing in the area following the incident.        

Boro crops across 13 unions in four upazilas of Habiganj have been damaged by hailstorms over the past three days, local agriculture officials said. The affected unions include Badalpur in Ajmiriganj upazila, Pukra, Lakhai, Subidpur and North-East union No. 1 in Baniachong, Lukra, Richi, Nijampur, Laskarpur, Gopaya and Poil in Sadar, and Shanbila and Devanhata in Chunarughat upazila. According to the Department of Agricultural Extension (DAE), hailstorms accompanied by strong winds hit the district on the night of April 14 and again on April 15 and 16, causing widespread damages to crops. Preliminary estimates suggest that about 15 hectares of Boro fields in Ajmiriganj, 30 hectares in Baniachong, 90 hectares in Sadar, and 11 hectares in Chunarughat upazila were damaged. Additionally, around 8 hectares of seasonal vegetables in Chunarughat upazila were affected. Abdul Mannan, a farmer from Uttar Gorang village under Shanbila union, said the storm, which struck between 10:30pm and 11pm on April 15, destroyed nearly half of his paddy on one and half bighas. He also said vast areas of Boro fields in villages, including Gorangi Dighirpar, Mohimabad, Lalchan, Shanbila, and nearby Devanhata union were badly hit by the hailstorm. Officials said a target had been set to cultivate Boro paddy on 123,848 hectares of land across nine upazilas in the district in the current season. Against the target, 123,644 hectares have been brought under cultivation. They also noted that excessive rainfall has caused waterlogging in some areas, submerging around 281 hectares of Boro fields.  

A young man has been stabbed to death and another injured in an attack reportedly by their friends in Khulna’s Phultala upazila. The incident took place around 10:30pm on Thursday in Damodar union of the upazila. The deceased was identified as Sabbir, 23, son of Mostafa, while the injured is Nirob, both residents of ward No. 8 of the union. Khulna Additional Superintendent of Police Abir Siddique Shuvro said preliminary investigation suggests that the attackers and victims were friends. He added that a dispute took place between them 4-5 days ago. As a sequel to the brawl, Sabbir and Nirob came under attack near a school of the area on Thursday night, leaving both of them injured. They were taken to Khulna Medical College Hospital where the on-duty doctor declared the former dead.

A staggering 89% of women social media users in Bangladesh have experienced online violence at least once, speakers said at a national consultation, calling for urgent coordinated action to tackle technology-facilitated gender-based violence (TFGBV). Speaking at the programme titled “Prevention, Mitigation and Response for Technology-Facilitated Gender-Based Violence in the Context of Digital Development: The Role of Technology Platforms” on Thursday, they stressed the need for stronger policies, greater accountability of tech platforms, and widespread awareness to prevent and respond to the growing threat amid rapid digital expansion. The consultation, organised by the Bangladesh NGOs Network for Radio and Communication (BNNRC) at the CIRDAP Auditorium in Dhaka, brought together policymakers, law enforcement officials, regulators, and development experts. It was organised under the project titled “Strengthening Resilience Against Technology-Facilitated Gender-Based Violence (TFGBV) and Promoting Digital Development.” The project is implemented as part of the “Nagorikata: Civic Engagement Fund (CEF)” programme, funded by Switzerland, Global Affairs Canada, and the European Union, with technical assistance from GFA Consulting Group. Among the distinguished discussants were Mohammad Anwar Uddin, Additional Secretary of the ICT Division; Barrister Khalilur Rahman, acting Director General of the NGO Affairs Bureau; Md Jahidul Islam, Additional DIG of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID); Md Farhan Alam, Deputy Director of the Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC); Md Nurul Islam, Capacity Development and Management Expert at GFA Consulting Group’s Nagorikata Programme; and Tahrina Tahrima Chowdhury, Research Fellow at the Bangladesh Institute of Development Studies (BIDS), among others. Speakers noted that while technology has made life easier and access to services faster, it has also led to a rise in online violence, including blackmail, identity fraud, image manipulation, data breaches, cyber harassment, and hate speech. Women, adolescents, and gender-diverse individuals were identified as the most vulnerable groups. Data presented at the event, based on a 2024 report by the Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics (BBS) and UNFPA, revealed that 89% of women social media users in Bangladesh have experienced online violence at least once, with those aged 18 to 30 facing the highest risks. In his opening remarks, AHM Bazlur Rahman, Chief Executive Officer of BNNRC, stressed the importance of addressing the evolving and complex forms of gender-based violence in the digital age. He underscored the urgent need for coordinated measures to ensure prevention, protection, timely redress, and survivor-centered support. Participants highlighted the need to strengthen policy and institutional frameworks, improve access to justice and remedies, ensure accountability of technology platforms and service providers, and enhance awareness at individual, family, and community levels. The discussion also touched on introducing national ID-based verification systems to reduce fake accounts on social media and ensuring localised services tailored to Bangladesh. The discussion outlined various forms of TFGBV, including cyberstalking, cyberbullying, doxxing, hacking, online harassment, image-based abuse, child grooming, technology-facilitated sexual violence, and gender-based hate speech. Farhan Alam of BTRC stated that the commission received 13,023 complaints for content removal on social media last year, of which over 12,000 pieces of content were removed. Mentioning that around 90% of complainants were women, he emphasised the need to raise awareness at the family level to prevent online harassment against women. Mohammad Anwar Uddin, Additional Secretary of the ICT Division, noted that Bangladesh already has several legal frameworks to address TFGBV, but greater public awareness of these laws is essential. The consultation further noted that women are frequently subjected to doxxing, where personal information is shared without consent to intimidate or threaten them. Such forms of violence can have long-term psychological impacts, underscoring the need for stronger preventive measures at both administrative and societal levels.

Commerce Minister Khandakar Abdul Muktadir has expressed deep shock and sorrow at the death of Commerce Secretary Mahbubur Rahman. In a condolence message on Friday, he said Mahbubur Rahman was a skilled, honest and dedicated officer. “His professionalism, sense of responsibility, and integrity made significant contributions to the activities of the commerce ministry.” With his untimely death, the country has lost an experienced administrator – a loss that will be difficult to fill, the minister said. He prayed for the eternal peace of the departed soul and expressed deep sympathy to the bereaved family. Until December 2010, he worked as Deputy Commissioner, Joint Commissioner and Additional Commissioner at different Customs Houses, Customs, Excise and VAT Commissionerates, as well as the National Board of Revenue, demonstrating efficiency and professionalism. He was later promoted to the rank of Secretary and most recently served as Secretary of the Ministry of Commerce, where he was dedicated to advancing the country’s trade and economic development.

Bangladesh’s banking sector, which should operate as the backbone of the economy, is struggling to regain its footing due to a profound lack of good governance and deepening financial instability. According to the latest review by Bangladesh Bank, 17 banks failed to generate any net profit in 2024, while 11 banks gave up spending under Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) altogether in 2025. Experts view these as a clear sign of the dire state of the industry, fueled by skyrocketing non-performing loans (NPLs), weak boards, and political interference. Masrur Reaz, Chairman of Policy Exchange Bangladesh and former senior economist at the World Bank, told UNB that the financial health of some banks has revealed the worsening situation of the sector. He pointed out that these banks will take several years to return to a good financial position. At the same time, the strict policy regulations and skilled management are also required for these banks. Towfiqul Islam Khan, an economist and the Additional Research Director at the Centre for Policy Dialogue (CPD), said that the scenario was a reflection of the economy of Bangladesh. The banking sector is like the blood circulation in the financial sector; while banks are in trouble, the overall economy will not be vibrant, he said. Zero CSR Spending by 11 Banks: A recent central bank report on CSR activities revealed that 11 banks made no contributions to social welfare in 2025. These institutions include: Janata Bank, Agrani Bank, BASIC Bank, Bangladesh Krishi Bank, Rajshahi Krishi Unnayan Bank, Bangladesh Commerce Bank, National Bank, Global Islami Bank, Padma Bank, Union Bank, and National Bank of Pakistan. While CSR funds are typically allocated to sectors like education, health, and climate change, the zero expenditure by these banks suggests they are too preoccupied with internal financial and administrative crises to fulfill their social obligations. Profitability Crisis: Meanwhile, the central bank's performance report for 2024 identifies 17 banks that failed to earn a net profit. The list comprises several state-owned and struggling private lenders: Janata Bank, Agrani Bank, BASIC Bank, Bangladesh Krishi Bank, Rajshahi Krishi Unnayan Bank, AB Bank, Bangladesh Commerce Bank, First Security Islami Bank, ICB Islamic Bank, IFIC Bank, National Bank, NRB Commercial Bank, Global Islami Bank, Padma Bank, Social Islami Bank, Union Bank, and National Bank of Pakistan. Analysts cite high NPLs, unearned interest income, rising operating costs, and irregularities in loan disbursement as the primary drivers of this unprofitability. Many of these banks are now facing such severe capital shortfalls that they struggle to maintain regular business operations. Interestingly, the report noted that six banks managed to contribute to CSR in 2025 despite recording no profits in 2024, likely by utilizing previous reserves—a move experts warn may challenge long-term stability. The crisis points toward systemic issues that have plagued the sector for years. The main challenges identified include: A significant portion of total loans is stuck with large borrowers who continue to enjoy new facilities without repayment. Political and influential interference in boardrooms often overrides commercial logic. Lack of profits has led to a sharp decline in Capital Adequacy Ratios (CAR). Also, reliance on manual systems and outdated software increases operational risks. Impact on the Economy: The fragility of the banking sector is casting a long shadow over the national economy. A weak banking system leads to reduced credit flow to industries, hindered investment, and slowed GDP growth. In 2025, the total CSR expenditure by the banking sector stood at Tk 345.05 crore, with Tk 98.44 crore going to education and Tk 85.64 crore to health. However, the fact that only a few strong banks carry the bulk of this expenditure highlights a massive disparity in financial health across the sector. Urgent Reforms Needed: The economists and industry insiders are calling for immediate intervention to stabilize the sector. Key recommendations include: 1. Strict Loan Recovery: Legal action against willful defaulters. 2. Board Accountability: Ensuring transparency and independence in bank management. 3. Digitalization: Modernizing risk management and banking software. 4. Policy Oversight: Strengthening CSR monitoring to ensure it remains a merit-based, profit-driven obligation. Without swift reformative steps, this deep-seated governance crisis and financial weakness pose a significant risk to the overall economic stability of Bangladesh.

Dhaka ranked 5th among the world’s most polluted cities on Friday morning, with an Air Quality Index (AQI) of 171 recorded at 9:10am. The air quality was categorised as ‘unhealthy’, indicating a significant risk to public health, according to AQI standards. Egypt’s Cairo topped the list with an AQI of 658, followed by India’s Delhi (328), Thailand’s Chiang Mai (205), and Nepal’s Kathmandu (181). An AQI reading between 101 and 150 is considered ‘unhealthy for sensitive groups’, while 151–200 is classified as ‘unhealthy’. Levels of 201–300 are deemed ‘very unhealthy’, and readings above 301 are labelled ‘hazardous’, posing severe health risks. The AQI, which tracks daily air quality, indicates how polluted the air is and the potential health impact on residents. In Bangladesh, AQI measurements are based on five key pollutants: particulate matter (PM10 and PM2.5), nitrogen dioxide (NO₂), carbon monoxide (CO), sulfur dioxide (SO₂), and ozone. Dhaka has long battled air pollution, with conditions typically worsening in winter and improving during the monsoon season. According to the World Health Organization, air pollution is responsible for an estimated seven million deaths worldwide each year, mainly from stroke, heart disease, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, lung cancer, and acute respiratory infections.

A looming jet fuel shortage in Europe and Asia sparked by the Iran war and the effective closure of the Strait of Hormuz could further upend world travel within weeks if oil doesn’t start flowing again soon — meaning higher airfares and flight cancellations as the summer travel season approaches. In an exclusive Associated Press interview Thursday, International Energy Agency Director Fatih Birol said Europe has “maybe six weeks” of remaining jet fuel supplies and said the global economy faces its “largest energy crisis.” In general, some European countries hold several months’ worth of jet fuel inventory at a time, according to an IEA report released this week. Jet fuel — a refined kerosene-based oil product — is airlines’ biggest cost, making up about 30% of overall expenses, according to the International Air Transport Association. And jet fuel prices have roughly doubled since the war began. Shortages could start next. “Every passing day that the Strait of Hormuz remains shut, Europe is edging closer to supply shortages,” said Amaar Khan, head of European jet fuel pricing at Argus Media. “The strait accounts for around 40% of Europe’s jet fuel imports, but no jet fuel has passed the strait since the war broke out.” Airline officials have largely reacted with caution, acknowledging potential fuel issues but working to reassure customers. Still, some carriers have already passed costs on to consumers by increasing fees for baggage and other add-ons, embedding costs into ticket prices, or raising fuel surcharges. A handful of airlines already are cutting flights. Experts say other parts of air travel — such as scheduling flexibility and routes — would likely be impacted. Here’s a look at how jet fuel supplies work and how consumers might see effects. How does jet fuel get to the plane? Jet fuel is made from crude oil at refineries, which also create gasoline and diesel. Airlines generally buy jet fuel from refineries or fuel companies, similar to drivers buying gasoline from stations, but on a much larger scale. Jet fuel travels on ships and through pipelines and is stored by airlines at airports. Purchasing is handled by airlines. If fuel supplies are running out in a region, that doesn’t necessarily mean there will be no flights. Some airlines might have more stored than others. But remaining flights are likely to be expensive, reflecting fuel costs. Larger airlines have advantages in regions with shortages. They have the financial means to deal with high prices, said Jacques Rousseau, managing director at financial firm Clearview Energy Partners. In Europe, a number of countries are now relying on less than 20 days of coverage in their fuel supplies, according to this week’s IEA report. Supplies haven’t dropped below 29 days since 2020, the report said. If that falls under 23 days, physical shortages may emerge at some airports, resulting in flight cancellations and lower demand, the report warned. Which regions could feel pain? Asia-Pacific countries are the most reliant on oil and jet fuel from the Middle East, followed by Europe, Rousseau said. Most of Europe’s jet fuel is produced by European refiners, but about 20-25% of its supply is missing because of the war, Rousseau said. To fill some gaps, the U.S. has increased its exports of jet fuel to Europe considerably, sending about 150,000 barrels per day in April, or about six times the normal level, Rousseau said. Availability of jet fuel is less of an issue in the U.S., a major oil producer, he added. “I tell my kids ... we’re not so much going to run out of supply,” Rousseau said. “It’s just going to cost more here, whereas in different parts of the world you could actually get to a point where there’s just no fuel.” How much is the world supply of jet fuel lagging? The world is losing 10 million to 15 million barrels of oil a day due to the closure of the Strait of Hormuz, said Pavel Molchanov, senior investment strategist at investment firm Raymond James & Associates. “There are exactly the same refineries in exactly the same places in Asia and Europe, but if there is not enough oil for those refineries to operate, it’s going to lead to physical supply disruption,” he said. Even though the IEA has released 400 million barrels of oil from members’ emergency reserves, that won’t help in the short term, he added. “It could take until the end of the year to get all of those barrels onto the market,” he said. How will my travel be affected? Christopher Anderson, a professor of operations, technology and information management at Cornell University, said travelers should prepare for more than just higher airfares. “This is no longer just a fuel-price story. For airlines, it is now a network-planning story,” he said. “Higher fuel costs matter, but so do longer routings, reduced scheduling flexibility and greater uncertainty about what demand will look like even a few weeks out.” Travelers might see “a market with later booking patterns, more schedule volatility and fewer low-fare options if this disruption lasts into the core summer season,” he said. What are airlines doing? Dutch airline KLM and U.K. budget carrier easyJet told AP they weren’t experiencing current fuel shortages, without commenting further on the IEA’s warning. Still, both airlines are among those that have seen higher costs eat into their budgets. On Thursday, KLM said it would cut 160 flights next month — about 1% of its total European routes. The airline cited “rising kerosene costs” and said a limited number of flights are “no longer financially viable to operate.” In a Thursday update, EasyJet said it expects to see a pretax loss of 540 million to 560 million pounds (about $731 million to $758 million) for the first half of the 2026 fiscal year. Still, CEO Kenton Jarvis said demand remains strong overall — noting that Easter travel was easyJet’s busiest ever for that holiday period. Lufthansa said Thursday that labor disputes and high fuel prices are forcing it to immediately shut down feeder airline CityLine, earlier than planned, and take its 27 older, less fuel-efficient planes out of service. The decision accelerates a shutdown that had been expected for next year. U.S. carrier Delta Air Lines — which frequently flies to European destinations — said on Thursday that it was “aware of the potential jet fuel supply issue” on the continent and monitoring the situation. Delta, which bought a refinery in Philadelphia in 2012 to manage its largest expense, said it doesn’t expect any “near-term impact to our operations.” How are prices affected? Other airlines have sounded the alarm about rising fuel prices, with some already passing along new costs to travelers, often embedded into ticket prices and add-on fees. U.S. carriers Delta, United, American Airlines, Southwest Airlines and JetBlue have all increased checked baggage fees, for example, in recent weeks. United CEO Scott Kirby said in a recent memo to staff that if fuel prices stay elevated, it could add $11 billion in annual costs. “For perspective,” Kirby wrote, “in United’s best year ever, we made less than $5B.” Meanwhile, Hong Kong’s Cathay Pacific recently bumped fuel surcharges by roughly 34% across all routes, while Air India added up to $280 in fees to some flights earlier this month. Emirates, Lufthansa and KLM have also adjusted fees or fares to keep pace with the price volatility.

 Europe has “maybe six weeks or so” of remaining jet fuel supplies, the head of the International Energy Agency said Thursday in a wide-ranging interview, warning of possible flight cancellations “soon” if oil supplies remain blocked by the Iran war. IEA Executive Director Fatih Birol painted a sobering picture of the global repercussions of what he called “the largest energy crisis we have ever faced,” stemming from the pinch-off of oil, gas and other vital supplies through the Strait of Hormuz. “In the past there was a group called ‘Dire Straits.’ It’s a dire strait now, and it is going to have major implications for the global economy. And the longer it goes, the worse it will be for the economic growth and inflation around the world,” he told The Associated Press. The impact will be “higher petrol (gasoline) prices, higher gas prices, high electricity prices,” said Birol, speaking in his Paris office looking out over the Eiffel Tower. Economic pain will be felt unevenly and “the countries who will suffer the most will not be those whose voice are heard a lot. It will be mainly the developing countries. Poorer countries in Asia, in Africa and in Latin America,” said the Turkish economist and energy expert who has led the IEA since 2015. But without a settlement of the Iran war that permanently reopens the Strait of Hormuz, “Everybody is going to suffer,” he added. “Some countries may be richer than the others. Some countries may have more energy than the others, but no country, no country is immune to this crisis,” he said.

A 10-day truce began in Lebanon on Friday that could pause fighting between Israel and the Hezbollah militant group and boost attempts to extend the ceasefire between Iran, the United States and Israel after weeks of devastating war. U.S. President Donald Trump announced the agreement as a ceasefire between Israel and Lebanon. However, Israel has not been fighting with Lebanon itself, but rather with the Iranian-backed Hezbollah militants inside the country, who were not formally part of the agreement. Barrages of gunshots rang out across Beirut as residents fired into the air just after midnight to celebrate the beginning of the truce. Displaced families began moving toward southern Lebanon and Beirut’s southern suburbs, despite warnings by officials not to attempt to return to their homes until it became clear whether the ceasefire would hold. Earlier, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said he agreed to the ceasefire “to advance” peace efforts with Lebanon, but said Israeli troops would not withdraw. Israeli forces have engaged in fierce battles with Hezbollah in the border area as they pushed into southern Lebanon to create what officials have called a “security zone.” Netanyahu, in his video address, said it will extend 10 kilometers (6 miles) into Lebanon. “That is where we are, and we are not leaving,” he said. Hezbollah said that “Israeli occupation on our land grants Lebanon and its people the right to resist it, and this matter will be determined based on how developments unfold” — a stance that could complicate the ceasefire. Israel reserves right to defend itself The U.S. State Department said that according to the agreement, Israel reserves the right to defend itself “at any time, against planned, imminent, or ongoing attacks.” But otherwise, Israel “will not carry out any offensive military operations against Lebanese targets, including civilian, military, and other state targets.” The wording suggested Israel would maintain the freedom to strike at will, as it did in the months following the ceasefire that ended the previous war. Lebanon’s state-run National News agency reported that Israeli shelling continued in the villages of Khiam and Dibbine about a half hour after the truce went into effect. Israel’s military said it was looking into reports of shelling and artillery fire in southern Lebanon. Hezbollah kept firing rockets at northern Israeli towns and communities right up to the start of the ceasefire. Air raid sirens went off in some often-targeted border towns less than 10 minutes before midnight. Flurry of diplomacy The agreement came after a meeting between Israel's and Lebanon’s ambassadors in Washington and a flurry of subsequent phone calls from Trump and Secretary of State Marco Rubio, according to a White House official. They were the first direct diplomatic talks between the two countries in decades. Hezbollah had opposed direct talks between Lebanon and Israel. Trump spoke Wednesday evening with Netanyahu, who agreed to a ceasefire with certain terms, according to the official, who was not authorized to comment publicly and spoke on condition of anonymity. Rubio then called Lebanon’s president, Joseph Aoun, who got on board. Trump then spoke with Aoun, and again with Netanyahu. The State Department worked with both governments to formulate a memorandum of understanding for the truce. Trump extends White House invitation Lebanon has insisted on a ceasefire to stop the fighting between Israel and Hezbollah before engaging in more talks, while vowing to commit to disarming the group. Israel and Lebanon have technically been at war since Israel was established in 1948, and Lebanon remains deeply divided over diplomatic engagement with Israel. Trump also invited the leaders of Israel and Lebanon to the White House for what he said would be “the first meaningful talks" between the countries since 1983. “Both sides want to see PEACE, and I believe that will happen, quickly,” Trump wrote on social media. Lebanon and Israel signed an agreement in 1983 saying Lebanon would formally recognize Israel, and Israel would withdraw from Lebanon. The deal fell apart during Lebanon’s civil war and was formally rescinded a year later. A Hezbollah official said the ceasefire was a result of Iran’s negotiations with the U.S., in which Iran had insisted Lebanon be included in its own ceasefire, and came about through efforts by mediator Pakistan. The official spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak publicly. The Iran war has killed thousands of people and upended global markets by disrupting the flow of oil. Iranian state television did not provide details on the meeting between Pakistani Army Gen. Asim Munir and Iranian Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Qalibaf, his country’s chief negotiator. There was no immediate comment from Pakistan, a key mediator after hosting the talks between the U.S. and Iran that authorities said helped narrow differences between the sides. Oil prices have fallen amid hopes for an end to fighting, and U.S. stocks on Wednesday surpassed records set in January. Officials say US and Iran are making progress Even as the U.S. blockade on Iranian ports and renewed Iranian threats strained the ceasefire, regional officials reported progress, telling AP the United States and Iran had an “in-principle agreement” to extend it to allow for more diplomacy. They spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss sensitive negotiations. But tensions simmered. The commander of Iran’s joint military command, Ali Abdollahi, threatened to halt trade in the region if the U.S. does not lift its naval blockade, and a newly appointed military adviser to Iranian Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei said he does not support extending the ceasefire. Mediators seek compromise on sticking points The fighting has killed at least 3,000 people in Iran, more than 2,100 in Lebanon, 23 in Israel and more than a dozen in Gulf Arab states. Thirteen U.S. service members have also been killed. Mediators are pushing for a compromise on three main sticking points: Iran’s nuclear program, the Strait of Hormuz and compensation for wartime damages, according to a regional official involved in the mediation efforts. Since the war began, Iran has curtailed maritime traffic through the strait, which a fifth of global oil transited through in peacetime. Tehran’s effective closure of the strait sent oil prices skyrocketing, raising the cost of fuel, food and other basic goods far beyond the Middle East.  

Human rights activist Tahmina Rahman has been appointed as the Executive Director of Ain o Salish Kendra (ASK), effective April 15, 2026, according to a decision of the organisation’s Executive Committee. Tahmina Rahman has been working for more than three decades at national and international levels in the fields of human rights, women’s rights, freedom of expression, the right to information and digital rights. She previously served as the General Secretary of ASK’s Executive Committee from 2019 to 2020 and has also been a member of its executive committees in various capacities. She also served as Regional Director of ARTICLE 19 Bangladesh and South Asia, where she played a key role in expanding the organisation’s work and contributing to policy development and implementation. She is currently a member of the Board of Trustees of the Bangladesh Legal Aid and Services Trust (BLAST). During her career, she has led initiatives to strengthen the right to information, advocate for review and reform of the Digital Security Act, and promote a safe environment for online freedom of expression. She has also led major projects supported by international organisations. Tahmina Rahman was awarded the MBE (Member of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire) in 2017 in recognition of her contributions to human rights. She also received the Franco-German Prize in 2016 for her work on human rights and the rule of law. Academically, she received a research fellowship from Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health. She holds a Master’s degree in Law from the University of London and a Bachelor of Laws (Honours) from the University of Dhaka. ASK said it expects her leadership and experience will further strengthen its efforts in protecting human rights, ensuring justice and promoting democratic values.

A housewife on Wednesday was allegedly abducted and raped after miscreants intercepted an auto-rickshaw carrying her and her husband and held the man captive in Homna upazila of Cumilla. The incident occurred on a village road in the upazila, and the victim filed a case with Homna Police Station on Thursday, naming Ashikur Rahman as the prime accused, said Officer-in-Charge (OC) Thomas Barua. According to the case statement, the victim and her husband, who live in a rented house in Homna municipality, were travelling by auto-rickshaw to her father’s home in Titas upazila around 9:30pm on Wednesday. After crossing the Agriculture College area, Ashikur Rahman, 24, along with six to seven associates, allegedly intercepted their vehicle using two motorcycles. The assailants then took the couple and the auto-rickshaw to a quiet brick-paved road. There, some of the accused took the husband and the driver away, while Ashikur and two others allegedly confined the woman. Ashikur Rahman is accused of raping her. Resident Medical Officer of Homna Upazila Health Complex, Dr Md Shahid Ullah, said the victim and her husband arrived at the hospital around 3am and later sought police assistance. She was subsequently referred to the One-Stop Crisis Centre at Cumilla Medical College Hospital for further examination and treatment. OC Thomas Barua said police took legal action immediately after receiving the complaint. The victim has filed a case, and her medical examination has been completed at Cumilla Medical College Hospital, he said. Police have formed multiple teams to arrest the prime accused and others involved, the OC added.

A cultural evening at Bangladesh Agricultural University (BAU) descended into chaos on Thursday as a violent clash between two student factions forced organizers to shut down the event prematurely. The incident - which reportedly stemmed from a personal dispute involving a female student - left the university’s helipad area in a state of panic as students from two residential halls engaged in a heated physical altercation. The program, titled 'Junior Reception and Cultural Night,' was organized by the 63rd batch of the Faculty of Agriculture to welcome the incoming 64th batch. Eyewitnesses said the festive atmosphere turned sour midway through the performances when a verbal spat broke out between residents of Shamsul Haque Hall and Isha Khan Hall. The argument rapidly escalated into shoving and hand-to-hand combat, sending general students scurrying for safety and bringing the celebration to a grinding halt. While senior students and organizers attempted to intervene, the volatility of the situation prompted faculty authorities to suspend the program indefinitely to prevent further bloodshed. "It started over a private issue that escalated into a hall-based rivalry," a student requesting anonymity shared, noting that the tension had been simmering before exploding on the helipad. University Proctor Prof. Dr. Md. Abdul Alim confirmed that the proctorial body is taking the matter seriously. "We rushed to the spot immediately and found the groups dispersed, though the threat of a secondary clash remained high. We have already secured video footage of the brawl. Those who sabotaged this academic and cultural environment will face swift disciplinary action following a thorough investigation," the Proctor stated.

The government on Thursday decided to restore observance of 7 November as ‘National Revolution and Solidarity Day’, and the day will be a public holiday. The decision was announced by Cabinet Secretary Nasimul Gani at a briefing at the Secretariat after a Cabinet meeting. He said, “It has been decided that 7 November will be declared as National Revolution and Solidarity Day as it was before. It will be a public holiday, as it used to be.” It will be observed as a Category “Ka” day, Nasimul Gani said the day had not been observed in this manner for the past 16 years. He also announced that 6 July has been declared as ‘National Rural Development Day’, classified as a ‘Category B’ observance, meaning there will be no public holiday, only observance. The Cabinet meeting also discussed renewable energy policy issues, including the `Renewable Energy Policy-2025’ and investment facilitation in the sector. According to the government plan, Bangladesh aims to generate 10,000 megawatts of electricity from solar power by 2030. The Cabinet Secretary said the target will be implemented using government land, with private sector participation encouraged for large-scale projects. He added that a committee will be formed to streamline policy implementation and attract investment, which is expected to begin work soon. Nasimul Gani also said the focus is shifting toward large land-based solar projects due to limitations in rooftop solar initiatives.

At least eight civilians were killed and dozens injured in an Israeli strike in southern Lebanon, as US President Donald Trump announced a 10-day ceasefire between Israel and Lebanon set to begin later on Thursday. Lebanon’s National News Agency (NNA) reported that Israeli forces struck the town of Ghaziyeh in the Zahrani area, leaving at least 33 people wounded, while several others remain missing under the rubble. Rescue operations are ongoing, reports Al Jazeera. In a separate incident, the Lebanese Health Ministry said an Israeli strike targeted an ambulance in Tebnine in the Bint Jbeil district, seriously injuring two paramedics. The ministry condemned the attack, saying strikes on medical personnel violate international humanitarian law. According to official figures, the death toll from ongoing Israeli attacks in Lebanon has risen to 2,196, with 7,185 people injured, highlighting the growing humanitarian toll of the conflict. Amid the escalating violence, Trump said Lebanon and Israel had agreed to a ceasefire following talks with Lebanese President Joseph Aoun and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. In a post on Truth Social, Trump said the ceasefire would begin at 5pm EST (2100 GMT) and last for 10 days, expressing hope it would lead to a lasting peace. The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) introduced a "Captains’ Card" on Thursday, granting former national team leaders lifetime access to all board events and comprehensive medical benefits. BCB ad-hoc committee president Tamim Iqbal distributed the cards during a ceremony at a Dhaka hotel Tamim, who received his own card from former captain Shafiqul Haq Heera, said the initiative was designed to honour the historical leaders of Bangladesh cricket and alleviate the anxiety many face when visiting stadiums post-retirement.  "I am sure all the captains present here have felt a sense of insecurity at some point about whether they would be recognized, stopped, or disrespected if they went to the ground," Tamim said. "This has happened to me as well. The card is meant to remove that hesitation." Cardholders will receive the same medical services from the BCB medical department as active national players. The board will also arrange health insurance for the former captains and provide financial assistance for overseas medical treatment if necessary. The event marked a rare gathering of Bangladesh's cricketing leadership, though several prominent figures were absent. The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has emphasized that Bangladesh requires extensive reforms across three critical sectors, including financial, fiscal, and foreign exchange. According to the global lender, significant work remains to be done in each of these areas to ensure economic stability. Krishna Srinivasan, Director of the IMF's Asia and Pacific Department, made these remarks on Thursday while responding to questions from Bangladeshi journalists at a press conference in Washington, D.C. The briefing was attended by media representatives from India, Nepal, Sri Lanka, and South Korea, among other nations. The briefing took place on the sidelines of the World Bank-IMF Spring Meetings, which commenced on April 13 and are scheduled to conclude on April 18. A 14-member Bangladeshi delegation, led by Finance and Planning Minister Amir Khosru Mahmud Chowdhury and Bangladesh Bank Governor Md. Mostaqur Rahman, is currently attending the meetings. Reflecting on his visit to Bangladesh on March 24, where he met with Prime Minister Tarique Rahman and the Finance Minister, Srinivasan shared his impressions of the new government's capacity for reform. "I visited Bangladesh and held meetings with the Prime Minister and other high-level officials. We discussed the challenges ahead," Srinivasan stated. "I noted that a government with a strong majority has the opportunity to undertake ambitious reform agendas. They have listened to our suggestions; now we must wait and see how they respond," he opined. The IMF Director expressed concern over Bangladesh's revenue collection performance. "In terms of revenue mobilization, Bangladesh has not performed well. It remains at a low level and has seen further deterioration over the last three years," he noted. Regarding the release of the next loan tranche, he mentioned that discussions are ongoing, and updates would be provided in due course. Highlighting the situation in Sri Lanka, Srinivasan pointed out that under its IMF-supported program, the country has made significant strides in increasing its tax-to-GDP ratio over the last three years, gradually building financial buffers. He noted that Sri Lanka is now in a relatively better position to support citizens affected by energy price shocks. Srinivasan warned that because Bangladesh has a small revenue base, the government faces greater pressure when trying to provide social safety nets. "The people of Bangladesh are suffering. Therefore, it is crucial that whatever resources Bangladesh possesses are utilized with maximum target-based efficiency," he urged. He advised Bangladesh to focus on increasing revenue collection while addressing other barriers in the financial sector to boost both short-term and long-term growth. Like other Asian nations, Bangladesh has been impacted by global energy shocks, and Srinivasan concluded that policy support and program discussions are active, with the outcome depending on how effectively these dialogues progress.

Bangladesh's agent banking revolution has a paradox at its heart; over the past decade, the country has built one of South Asia's most extensive agent banking networks over 21,000 outlets stretching from the river deltas of Barishal to the highland fringes of the Chittagong Hill Tracts, twenty-four million accounts have been opened, the majority by people in rural areas who had never held a bank account in their lives. But a new policy brief by the International Growth Centre (IGC) found that while agent banking in Bangladesh has significantly widened financial access over the past decade, major gaps remain in credit delivery and gender participation. The study, hosted by the University of Oxford and the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE) and published recently, analysed more than 21,000 agent banking outlets across the country, offering one of the most comprehensive assessments of the sector to date. It highlights a “strong expansion but incomplete inclusion” narrative, where outreach has improved markedly but deeper financial intermediation, particularly access to credit remains limited. The agent banking model was introduced in Bangladesh in 2013 with a clear mandate: to extend financial services to communities beyond the reach of conventional bank branches, reducing operational costs by routing services through local agents. By 2016, the network had 2,601 outlets. By 2024, that figure had surged to over 21,000, a more than eightfold increase in under a decade. However, the report notes that this rapid physical expansion is beginning to plateau, suggesting the sector may be approaching saturation in terms of outlet growth. Future progress, it says, will depend more on improving service depth rather than increasing geographic coverage. Agent banking has also reshaped the country’s financial geography. Unlike traditional banking where Dhaka and Chattogram dominate agent banking has spread more evenly, with rural areas hosting significantly higher outlet density per capita. Despite these gains, the study flags a critical weakness: limited credit provision. As of December 2024, nearly two-thirds of agent banking outlets had no outstanding loans, indicating that most agents primarily facilitate deposits, withdrawals and remittance services rather than lending. “Without access to credit, financial inclusion remains incomplete,” the report notes, stressing that credit is essential for households to manage economic shocks and invest in income-generating activities. Although cumulative loan disbursement through agents reached Tk 240.3 billion by 2024, credit growth remains significantly lower than deposit mobilisation, with a loan-to-deposit ratio of 57.3 percent, indicating a continued gap in financial intermediation. The so-called “zero-loan phenomenon” is particularly acute in remote and structurally disadvantaged regions, including parts of the Chattogram Hill Tracts, where geographic and infrastructural challenges persist. The findings confirm that agent banking has developed a strong rural footprint, with significantly more outlets per capita compared to traditional bank branches in rural areas. Rural deposits have also grown steadily, indicating improved access to formal financial services. However, credit penetration in these areas remains comparatively weak. The report also finds that agent banking expansion often follows existing banking infrastructure, rather than independently targeting underserved or poorer regions, raising concerns about whether the model is fully addressing financial exclusion. Gender gap remains stark The study reveals a mixed picture on gender inclusion. While female participation as customers is rising women’s account ownership has been growing faster than men’s in recent years, the supply side remains overwhelmingly male-dominated. More than 92% of agent operators are men, leaving women significantly underrepresented in the delivery of financial services. This gap is not merely symbolic: female agents have been shown in multiple financial inclusion studies across South Asia to be more effective at reaching female clients in communities where social norms constrain women's interactions with male service providers. A network that is overwhelmingly male-operated may therefore be structurally limiting its own ability to deepen inclusion among the women it is nominally reaching as customers. This imbalance, the report suggests, may limit accessibility and trust for female clients in certain communities. With expansion slowing, the IGC urges policymakers to shift focus from scaling the network to strengthening its functionality. Key recommendations include incentivising banks to extend credit through agent outlets, deploying digital tools for credit scoring and loan processing, and adopting targeted strategies for underserved regions. The report also calls for stronger efforts to increase female participation in the agent network, including enforcing existing gender inclusion policies. “Bangladesh’s agent banking experience reflects strong outreach but incomplete financial deepening,” the study concludes, adding that the next phase must prioritise equitable and effective financial inclusion.

Several areas in Sylhet city will face electricity outages on Saturday due to transformer repair and maintenance, transmission line development, and tree pruning work, according to the Power Development Board. Abdur Razzak, Executive Engineer of Sales and Distribution Division-2 of the Sylhet Power Development Board, shared the information in a press release on Thursday. According to the statement, power supply will remain suspended from 9 am to 5 pm in areas under the 11 kV feeders of Power Development and Distribution Division-2, including Chalibandar, Kastghar, Sobanighat, Bishwa Road, Jail Road, Bandar Road, and adjacent areas. On the same day, electricity will also remain cut from 9 am to 5 pm in several other areas under the same 11 kV feeder network, including Amjad Ali Road, Kalighat, Chararpar, Masimpur, Mahajanpatri, Hakar’s Market, Laldighirpar, Dak Bangla Road, Burhan Uddin Mazar, Shaplabagh, Kushighat, Mendibag, Mirapara, Nowagaon, Sadatikor, Mirror Chowk, Muktirchowk Muradpur, Tooltikor, Pir Chowk, and surrounding localities. The authorities said the power line will remain operational during the maintenance period, and supply will be restored immediately if the work is completed earlier than scheduled. Executive Engineer Abdur Razzak expressed regret for the temporary inconvenience and sought cooperation from consumers.  

Mobile courts on Thursday sentenced nine fishermen to different jail terms after 16 were arrested for catching jatka in violation of restrictions in the Padma-Meghna river sanctuary area of Chandpur Sadar upazila. The remaining seven detainees, all minors, were released after giving undertakings, officials said. The operation was conducted from 12pm to 5pm in several areas of the sanctuary, including Baharia, Lakshmipur, Dokanghar, Rajrajeshwar and nearby locations, said Chandpur Sadar Upazila Assistant Fisheries Officer Md Mizanur Rahman. He said the joint task force arrested the fishermen for illegally catching jatka (juvenile hilsa) during the ongoing ban period. During the drive, authorities seized four engine-powered wooden fishing boats, one large behundi net and about 10,000 metres of current nets. The seized nets were later destroyed by burning at the Chandpur Coast Guard station. Officials said the joint operation was conducted by the district administration, fisheries department, Coast Guard and naval police. Mobile court proceedings at the Coast Guard station were conducted by Executive Magistrate Tanvir Rabbani. The court sentenced two fishermen to three months’ imprisonment and fined them Tk 500 each, three others to one month’s imprisonment and Tk 500 each, another three to 15 days’ imprisonment and Tk 200 each, and one person to 15 days’ imprisonment and Tk 500 fine.

Chinmoy Krishna Das, the suspended ISKCON leader and spokesperson of Bangladesh Sammilito Sanatani Jagran Jote, has been granted bail in one case on Thursday while remaining in custody in Chattogram jail. The order was issued by Chattogram Judicial Magistrate Shakhawat Hossain after a hearing, court officials said. According to court sources, the case was filed by BNP leader and former minister Moir Nasir Uddin, alleging land grabbing, intimidation and assault in the Mekhla area of Hathazari upazila. The case, filed in 2023, named Chinmoy Krishna Das and five others as accused. After investigation, the Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI) submitted its report. Court bench assistant Mizanur Rahman confirmed that the bail petition filed on behalf of Chinmoy Krishna Das was granted after hearing. However, he still faces multiple other cases, including one over the killing of lawyer Saiful Islam Alif, along with at least six pending cases against him. Earlier, on April 7, the court had allowed a petition to show him arrested in the case. Notably, violence erupted on November 26, 2024, following a sedition case over alleged disrespect to the national flag, during which lawyer Saiful Islam was beaten and stabbed to death. Following the incident, his father, Jamal Uddin, filed a murder case naming 31 individuals.

For many attendees, the atmosphere felt like a “dream wedding,” as described by organisers—filled with celebration, laughter, and a sense of shared hope. Families who had long struggled with poverty found themselves part of a moment that felt both personal and collective. Md. Zainul Abedin, head of Seeds of Sadaqah, said the initiative reflects a broader mission. “Our goal is to create a path of happiness and self-reliance for the underprivileged and helpless people of society. Today’s event is a shining example of that,” he said. Another organiser, Orkatul Jannat, said the support would help instil confidence in the couples as they begin their new journey together. “This assistance will bring new hope and encouragement in their lives at the start of their marriage,” Orkatul Jannat said. Organisers added that they plan to continue similar humanitarian initiatives in the future, aiming to support vulnerable communities and help more young people overcome financial barriers to marriage. Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami Secretary General Mia Golam Parwar on Thursday said there is “no alternative” to implementing the verdict delivered through a referendum, accusing the government of delaying its execution. Speaking at a press conference of an 11-party alliance held at Al-Falah Auditorium in Moghbazar, Parwar alleged that the government had taken a “U-turn” and was offering various excuses instead of implementing the referendum outcome. He also claimed that opposition voices were being suppressed in the National Parliament and criticized recent government statements on multiple issues. Referring to the energy sector, Parwar questioned the Energy Minister’s claim that there was no crisis, saying the country was facing fuel shortages, long queues at petrol stations, and difficulties even for lawmakers in accessing fuel. He further said the fuel situation was contributing to a fertilizer shortage, warning that it could affect agricultural activities, including the upcoming Boro season. On the health sector, he expressed concern over what he described as a worsening measles situation, claiming that hospitals were under severe strain and many patients were in critical condition. Parwar also alleged a deterioration in law and order, citing incidents of extortion, murder, and land grabbing, and claimed that banking sector stability had been undermined by large-scale loan defaults. He further accused the government of politicising public administration through transfers and forced resignations, saying there had been no qualitative improvement in governance.

A new Border Outpost (BOP) has been inaugurated in Mauchosha under Birol upazila of Dinajpur to enhance the operational capacity of the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) in securing the frontier and preventing smuggling and other cross-border crimes. The outpost was formally inaugurated on Thursday by BGB North-West Rangpur Region Commander Brigadier General ASM Nasher, who hoisted the national flag, 42 BGB said in a media statement. Following the inauguration, the regional commander planted a mango sapling on the BOP premises. Brigadier General Nasher said the BGB remains active 24 hours a day, even in adverse conditions, to safeguard the country’s sovereignty and ensure that no illegal activities take place along the border. He noted that special check posts have been set up in border areas to curb smuggling of fuel and edible oil, while intelligence surveillance has also been strengthened. He expressed hope that continued cooperation from local communities and the media, through objective reporting, would help reduce border crimes to zero. He further said the newly established Mauchosha BOP, located near the zero line between Kishoriganj and Ramchandrapur BOPs under Dinajpur Battalion (42 BGB), would help prevent drug trafficking, human trafficking, and illegal infiltration. With the addition of the new outpost, security operations across the approximately 99-kilometre border area under Dinajpur Battalion (42 BGB) are expected to be further strengthened, he added. Senior officials, including Dinajpur Sector Commander Colonel Mohammad Faisal Hasan Khan and Dinajpur Battalion (42 BGB) Commander Lieutenant Colonel Abdullah Al Moin Hasan, were present on the occasion.

“There are no dates yet,” Pakistan’s Foreign Ministry spokesperson Tahir Andrabi told reporters Thursday. “We will announce the timing of these talks as and when it is decided,” he said, urging the media to avoid speculation. Andrabi said Pakistan’s role as a mediator and facilitator did not end when the first round of talks concluded over the weekend. “It continued,” he said. He said Pakistan’s army chief, Field Marshal Asim Munir, is visiting Iran with a delegation, while Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif is also traveling to regional countries to promote peace. “We will continue to advocate for peace, prosperity and stability,” he said. Asked about the first round of talks, Andrabi said there was “certainly not a major breakthrough in terms of any concrete document emanating from these talks, but there was no breakdown as well.”  

Bangladesh General Insurance Company PLC, the trustee of Vanguard AML BD Finance Mutual Fund One, has announced that the fund is undergoing a formal winding-up process and asked all concerned unitholders to submit their claims by April 30. According to a disclosure issued by the Dhaka Stock Exchange (DSE) on Thursday, investors have been requested to file claims for dividends, refunds or any other dues with full details within the stipulated deadline. The trustee said claims must be submitted to its Trustee & Investment Department at its office in Dilkusha Commercial Area. Any claim received after April 30 will not be accepted. Mutual winding up, often referred to as a Members' Voluntary Liquidation (MVL) or a voluntary arrangement, is a process where the members and shareholders of a solvent company mutually agree to cease operations, sell assets, pay off creditors, and distribute remaining funds. Unlike compulsory liquidation, this is a voluntary, non-court-ordered process initiated because the company is solvent and has fulfilled its purpose or the members wish to stop operations. In a separate notice, the trustee also requested margin account unitholders and margin loan providers, including merchant banks and stockbrokers to provide detailed information of affected investors. The required information includes unitholders’ names, BO ID, shareholding position, applicable tax rate, dividend amount, and bank details such as account number and routing number, along with their respective claims. The trustee reiterated that submissions must be completed within the deadline, warning that late notifications will not be considered as the fund proceeds with its liquidation process.

Paying rich tribute to the peacekeepers who made the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty, Permanent Representative of Bangladesh Ambassador Salahuddin Noman Chowdhury has underscored Bangladesh’s readiness to further strengthen its contributions in partnership with the United Nations and the international community. The Permanent Mission of Bangladesh to the UN hosted a luncheon in honor of the Heads of Military Components and Force Commanders serving in United Nations peacekeeping missions at the Mission on April 15. Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Acting Commissioner Md Sarwar on Thursday stressed the need to strengthen community policing to build a people-friendly police force and ensure that citizens receive their expected legal services from police stations. He made the remarks while addressing senior DMP officials at the monthly crime review meeting for March 2026 held at the DMP headquarters conference room. The acting commissioner said the overall law and order situation in the capital remains stable at present and urged all concerned to remain alert to maintain this stability. He directed police officers to intensify foot patrols and conduct drives to recover drugs and arrest warrant-listed accused. He also instructed them to stay vigilant to prevent any crime within police station jurisdictions. Additional Police Commissioner (Crime and Operations) S M Md Nazrul Islam said expectations from  people are high and police must work with greater dedication to meet those expectations. He added that a zero-tolerance policy would be followed to maintain law and order. Officials of various ranks of DMP were awarded at the event in different categories in recognition of their good performance in maintaining law and order, controlling crime, and ensuring public safety in Dhaka during March.

BNP will start interview of nomination seekers for reserved women seats in the 13th Parliament on Friday. BNP Senior Joint Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi announced the schedule at a press briefing at the party’s central office at Nayapaltan in the capital on Thursday. Interviews will be held at the BNP’s Chairman’s Gulshan office starting at 3pm on Friday and Saturday. Candidates from Rajshahi, Rangpur, Khulna, Barishal and Faridpur divisions will be interviewed on Friday while those from Dhaka, Chattogram, Cumilla, Sylhet and Mymensingh divisions on Saturday. A large number of aspirants have submitted nomination forms for the reserved women’s seats, prompting the party to arrange the interviews, said Rizvi. BNP nomination board, headed by Party Chairman Tarique Rahman, will conduct the interviews in the presence of members of the party’s standing committee, he added. More than 600 aspirants have collected nomination forms. The Election Commission earlier announced the schedule for the reserved women’s seats election. The deadline for submission of nomination papers is April 21 while scrutiny will take place on April 22 and 23. Appeals can be filed on April 26, and will be settled between April 27 and 28. Symbols will be allotted on April 30, and voting will be held on May 12. According to the seat distribution, the BNP alliance is expected to get 36 seats, Jamaat-e-Islami alliance 13 seats, and independents one seat.    

An 11-party opposition alliance led by Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami on Thursday announced a series of protest programmes across the country from April 18 to May 2 to press for implementation of the July Charter reforms in line with the referendum. The programmes include a mass procession in Dhaka on April 18 under the alliance banner, followed by similar rallies in divisional cities on April 25 and district-level processions on May 2. As part of the campaign, the alliance will also distribute leaflets and organise seminars in divisional headquarters and key district towns during the period. Mia Golam Parwar, Secretary General of Jamaat-e-Islami, made the announcement at a press conference held at Al-Falah Auditorium near the party’s central office in Moghbazar. Earlier, senior leaders of the alliance held a strategy meeting at the same venue to determine their next course of action amid the ongoing movement. The meeting was presided over by opposition leader and Jamaat Ameer Shafiqur Rahman. Among others, Nahid Islam, chief whip of the opposition and NCP convener; Oli Ahmad, president of the Liberal Democratic Party; Mamunul Haque, chief of Bangladesh Khelafat Majlis; and Asaduzzaman Fuad, general secretary of the AB Party, were present. The alliance leaders reiterated their demand for swift implementation of the July Charter, stressing that their movement would continue until the reforms are carried out.

US military forces struck a vessel in the eastern Pacific Ocean on Wednesday, killing three men the Pentagon said were involved in drug trafficking. The United States Southern Command confirmed that no US personnel were harmed in the operation. The command described the attack as a “lethal kinetic strike” on a vessel allegedly operated by a designated “terrorist organization” and travelling along known narcotics trafficking routes. However, officials did not identify the organisation or the individuals killed, nor did they provide evidence supporting claims of drug trafficking. The strike is part of an ongoing campaign by the administration of Donald Trump targeting suspected cartel-linked vessels in international waters. Several similar operations have been reported in recent days, with at least 178 people killed since the campaign began in early September, according to official figures. The military has provided limited details about the operations, which have drawn scrutiny from observers over transparency and verification of targets.

Prime Minister Tarique Rahman on Thursday assured the country’s people not to be worried over the global crisis caused by the Middle East war but urged them to exercise restraint and avoid extravagance in state functions and family spending. “Even amid the global war situation, we are trying to keep everything normal. Although fuel prices, including diesel, have been increased in all countries across the world, the current government has not raised prices in order to avoid public suffering,” he said. Addressing the ‘Independence Award-2026’ ceremony at Osmani Memorial Auditorium in the capital, Tarique said the government is spending hundreds of crores of taka every day in subsidies in the fuel and energy sector to maintain stability and keep the situation normal. He said the government is continuing all possible efforts to ensure public welfare as this is a government of people and accountable to them. He said the new BNP-led government has started its journey amid a fragile economy weakened by corruption and mismanagement along with a weak governance structure and a deteriorating law and order situation. Restoring peace and security in public life through improving law and order and strictly controlling corruption is one of the government’s key priorities, Tarique observed. Stating that Bangladesh currently has a large working-age population, he said creating employment opportunities for this group is one of the major challenges at present. “Not only the economy, the education system also suffered a major setback during the fascist rule. Unfortunately, even during the interim government period order in the education system has not been restored,” the Prime Minister said. In today’s competitive world, the education system must be modernised and made job-oriented to ensure survival, he said, adding that work has already begun to make the education system more practical. Tarique said more than half of the country’s population are women and no initiative can succeed easily unless a safe Bangladesh is ensured for them. He said the government has identified each sector and started implementing its action plans. The Prime Minister said the government earlier presented its election manifesto to people and signed the ‘July Charter’ with a commitment to state reform. PM confers ‘Independence Award’ on Khaleda, others “ People have supported all our commitments. Now it is time for implementation. We have already started working on fulfilling our promises,” he said. Tarique said his government will implement the party manifesto and every clause and word of the signed July Charter. “Personally, I believe that change in mindset is more important than changes on paper. The BNP government has proved it repeatedly whenever it has had the opportunity to run the state,” he said. The Prime Minister said Bangladesh gained independence at the cost of many lives and has now completed 55 years as an independent nation.“We have both achievements and shortcomings. To build a self-reliant and prosperous Bangladesh, we must avoid revenge, retaliation and unnecessary controversy,” he said. Quoting BNP founder and former President Ziaur Rahman, Tarique said, “National unity is our strength, division is our weakness.” Tarique said differences of opinion are natural in a democracy but they should not turn into hostility. “We must remain alert about the country’s interest as anti-Bangladesh forces are still waiting for opportunities.” He remembered the role and contributions of all national leaders of the country’s independence and Liberation War history including Shaheed President Ziaur Rahman, with deep respect and affection. “If we, for narrow partisan interests, fail to respectfully acknowledge the roles of our national leaders in history, then future history will not forgive us. I believe that hesitation in accepting historical truth reflects inferiority,” Tarique said. Earlier, the Prime Minister conferred the ‘Independence Award-2026’ on 15 distinguished individuals, including former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia and five institutions, in recognition of their outstanding contributions to the country. He recalled that BNP founder and former President Ziaur Rahman introduced the award. The Independence Award is the country’s highest civilian honour, given in recognition of outstanding contributions by individuals and institutions to the nation. Cabinet Secretary Nasimul Ghani conducted the programme and presented brief profiles of all the award recipients. Prime Minister’s spouse Dr Zubaida Rahman, daughter Barrister Zaima Rahman and Khaleda Zia’s sister Selima Islam were present at the programme organised by the Cabinet Division. Local Government Minister Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed, Leader of the Opposition Shafiqur Rahman, members of the cabinet, MPs, judges, chiefs of the three services, diplomats, senior civil and military officials, and other dignitaries were present at the programme. The Cabinet Division earlier announced the names of the nominees for this year’s Independence Award through a press release on March 5. Chief Whip Nurul Islam recited a poem at Parliament on Thursday honoring Prime Minister Tarique Rahman, marking the first such tribute at the 13th Parliament. The Chief Whip formally congratulated the Prime Minister on his inclusion in Time Magazine’s list of the 100 most influential people in the world. The announcement was met with enthusiastic desk-thumping from treasury bench members. "Our leader and Leader of the House, Tarique Rahman, has been honored as one of the world's 100 most influential personalities," Nurul Islam said. "This honour for the Prime Minister is an honor for the nation. On behalf of this Parliament, I offer my sincere congratulations." Following his speech, Nurul Islam recited a poem dedicated to the Prime Minister though he did not disclose the author’s identity. This follows a similar occurrence on March 13, just a day after the Thirteenth Parliament’s journey began on March 12. The United States is prepared to resume military operations if Iran refuses to agree to a deal, US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth said on Thursday. Speaking to reporters in Washington, DC, Hegseth warned that US forces remain on standby to restart combat if diplomatic efforts fail, reports Al Jazeera. He also claimed that the US Navy is currently controlling maritime traffic through the Strait of Hormuz, asserting that Iran “does not have a navy any more”. Hegseth further said the United States would continue its naval blockade of Iran for “as long as it takes”, signalling no immediate plans to ease pressure on Tehran. Delivering a direct warning, he added that Washington is closely monitoring Iran’s military movements. “We are watching you,” Hegseth said, referring to Iranian activities and assets.

Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf has said a ceasefire in Lebanon is just as important as one in Iran, stressing that Tehran is working to secure a permanent truce across all conflict zones. In a post on Telegram following talks related to ending the war between Iran and the United States, Ghalibaf said Iran has been striving to compel its adversaries to establish a lasting ceasefire in line with existing agreements, reports Al Jazeera. “For us, a ceasefire in Lebanon is just as important as a ceasefire in Iran,” he told Nabih Berri during a phone conversation. Ghalibaf, who led Iran’s delegation at last week’s US-Iran talks in Pakistan that ended without a deal, reiterated Tehran’s position that any ceasefire agreement must also apply to Lebanon — a stance rejected by the US and Israel. He added that Iran considers the Lebanese people as “among us” and has not forgotten them. During the call, Berri briefed Ghalibaf on the latest Israeli attacks, saying around 1.2 million people have been displaced in Lebanon. “Israel is committing crimes in our country and seeking to displace Lebanese people,” Berri was quoted as saying, adding that any communication with Israel would not serve Lebanon’s interests. The conflict expanded on March 2 after Hezbollah fired rockets at Israel, saying it was retaliating for the killing of Iran’s Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei and repeated Israeli violations of a November 2024 ceasefire. Since then, more than 2,000 people have been killed in Lebanon amid ongoing Israeli strikes. Meanwhile, US President Donald Trump said leaders of Israel and Lebanon were expected to hold direct talks for the first time in 34 years, although Beirut has yet to officially confirm the development.

Police have arrested a man in connection with the rape of a young girl at Saner Bari village on Palash upazila of Narsingdi district on Thursday. The arrestee was Hafizur Rahman, son of Abdus Sattar Mia of Saner Bari village. Kutubul Alam, Officer-in-Charge of Palash Police Station, said Hafizur along with another man identified as Arjun Badsha intercepted the girl on her way to home on Wednesday evening and took her to a banana orchard forcibly. Later, they violated the girl in turns. A case was filed in this connection on that day. Later, police conducted a drive in the village and arrested Hafizur on Thursday. However, police are trying to arrest the other culprit, said OC.

Bangladesh and China on Thursday held in-depth exchanges on strengthening cooperation in news media, film, and television between Bangladesh and China. The two sides expressed hope to further enrich the content of exchanges, expand areas of cooperation, and elevate bilateral relations to a new level. China is willing to continue deepening exchanges between the media and film/television sectors of both countries, enhance the sharing of experience in building modern communication systems, and promote mutual understanding and affinity between the peoples of the two nations. Ambassador Yao congratulated Minister Swapon and State Minister Yasser on their new appointments, stating that cooperation in news media, film, and television serves as an important foundation for information transmission and emotional exchange. The Bangladeshi side thanked Ambassador Yao for his congratulations and positively acknowledged the role of Bangladesh-China news media exchanges and film/television cooperation in advancing bilateral relations. They expressed hope to further enrich the content of exchanges, expand areas of cooperation, and elevate bilateral relations to a new level.

Eastern Bank PLC (EBL) has recommended a 25% cash dividend and a 3% stock dividend for the year ending on December 31, 2025, reflecting improved earnings and strong asset quality. The decision was taken at a meeting of the board of directors, according to a disclosure made by the Dhaka Stock Exchange (DSE) on Thursday. The bank has reported consolidated earnings per share (EPS) of Tk 5.23 for 2025, up from Tk 4.14 (restated) a year earlier. On a standalone basis, EPS rose to Tk 5.65 from Tk 4.70 (restated). Net asset value (NAV) per share also increased to Tk 31.86, compared to Tk 27.16 (restated) in 2024, while consolidated NAV stood at Tk 31.38, up from Tk 27.09 (restated). The consolidated net operating cash flow per share (NOCFPS) climbed to Tk 20.12 from Tk 15.09 (restated) in the previous year. The bank said the stock dividend has been recommended to strengthen its capital base to support future business growth and improve regulatory ratios. It clarified that the stock dividend will be issued from current year’s profit and not from any capital reserve, revaluation reserve, or unrealised gains. EBL’s asset quality remained robust, with its non-performing loan (NPL) ratio declining to 2.24% in December 2025, significantly lower than the industry average of 30.60%. The bank will hold its annual general meeting (AGM) on June 11, 2026 through a virtual platform. The record date has been fixed for May 6, 2026.

After a hiatus of nearly two months, Bangladesh Bank (BB) has resumed purchasing US dollars from commercial banks through auctions to maintain stability in the foreign exchange market and keep the exchange rate under control. Bangladesh Bank spokesperson Arif Hossain Khan said the central bank bought $50 million from four commercial banks on Thursday at a cut-off rate of Tk 122.75 per dollar. This followed a purchase of $70 million at Tk 122.70 per dollar on Wednesday. With these transactions, the central bank has purchased a total of $120 million so far in April. In the current fiscal year FY2025–26, the total dollar purchase by the central bank stands at $5.61 billion. A high-ranking official of the central bank said banks were verbally instructed earlier this week to purchase remittance dollars at a maximum rate of Tk 122.90. However, by buying dollars at a slightly lower rate through the auction, the central bank sent a clear signal to the market that its goal is to stabilise the rate around Tk 122.75. The market has recently felt some pressure due to geopolitical tensions, particularly surrounding US-Iran tensions, causing some banks to acquire dollars at higher rates. However, central bank officials expect the situation to normalize soon, leading to a potential dip in the exchange rate.  

Shares around the world rose as investors grew optimistic of a ceasefire extension in the Iran war. In Europe, Britain’s FTSE 100, France’s CAC 40 and Germany’s DAX were all up by around 0.5%. In Asia, Tokyo’s Nikkei 225 closed 2.4% while Hong Kong’s Hang Seng rose 1.7% to 26,394.26. The Shanghai Composite index ended 0.7% higher. Pakistan’s army chief is set to meet with Iranian officials in Tehran on Thursday in a bid to extend the ceasefire which paused almost seven weeks of war between Israel, the U.S. and Iran that have killed thousands of people and upended global markets by disrupting the flow of oil.  Uncertainty remains whether the frantic diplomacy can lead to a deal. The meeting comes as President Donald Trump announced the leaders of Israel and Lebanon will speak later on Thursday about halting the fighting between them.  If it takes place, the conversation would be the first time the leaders of the two countries have spoken directly in more than 30 years.  Both Israeli and Lebanese governments refused to confirm a conversation.  

Prime Minister Tarique Rahman on Thursday conferred the ‘Independence Award-2026’ on 15 distinguished individuals, including former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia, and five institutions in recognition of their glorious and outstanding contributions to the country. The awards were handed over at a ceremony held at the Osmani Memorial Auditorium in the capital. Of the recipients, seven people were awarded posthumously. Cabinet Secretary Nasimul Ghani conducted the programme and presented brief profiles of all the award recipients. Khaleda Zia was awarded posthumously for her overall contributions to independence, democracy, women’s education and nation-building. On behalf of Khaleda Zia, her granddaughter and Prime Minister’s daughter Barrister Zaima Rahman received the award. Among others, Major Mohammad Abdul Jalil was honoured posthumously for his contribution to the Liberation War, while Faujdarhat Cadet College was recognised for its role in the war as an institution. In science and technology category, Prof Dr Zahurul Karim received the award, while Dhaka Medical College Hospital was honoured for its contribution to medical science. The award for literature went posthumously to Dr Ashraf Siddiqui. In the cultural field, Hanif Sanket (AKM Hanif) and Bashir Ahmed (posthumous) were honoured. Jobera Rahman (Linu) received the award in sports. For contributions to rural development, the Palli Karma-Sahayak Foundation (PKSF) was recognised. In the category of social service and public service, the recipients included Dr Zafrullah Chowdhury (posthumous), SOS Children’s Villages International in Bangladesh, Md Saidul Haque, Gonoshasthaya Kendra and Maherin Chowdhury (posthumous). Kazi Fazlur Rahman was honoured posthumously for his contribution to public administration. In research and training, the recipients were Mohammad Abdul Baki, Prof Dr MA Rahim and Prof Dr Sukomal Barua. Abdul Mukit Majumder (Mukit Majumder Babu) received the award for his contribution to environmental conservation. Prime Minister’s spouse Dr Zubaida Rahman and Khaleda Zia’s sister Selima Islam were present at the programme organised by the Cabinet Division. Local Government, Rural Development and Co-operatives Minister Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed, Leader of the Opposition Shafiqur Rahman, members of the cabinet, MPs, judges, chiefs of the three services, diplomats, senior civil and military officials, and other dignitaries were present at the programme. The Cabinet Division earlier announced the names of the nominees for this year’s Independence Award on March 5. The Independence Award is the country’s highest civilian award, introduced in 1977 and awarded annually on the occasion of Independence Day that falls on March 26.  

Speakers at Journalists’ workshop urged the introduction of warning messages on the front of food packages, commonly known as Front-of-Package Labelling (FOPL) as the risk of non-communicable diseases caused by ultra-processed foods is increasing at an alarming rate in Bangladesh. Speakers said this at a two-day journalists’ workshop titled “Front-of-Package Labelling (FOPL) in Bangladesh: Importance, Progress and Way Forward,” held on April 15-16 at the Bangladesh Medical Association (BMA) Bhaban in the capital. Organized by PROGGA (Knowledge for Progress) with support from the Global Health Advocacy Incubator (GHAI), the workshop was attended by 29 journalists from print, television, and online media. They said the system helps consumers easily identify foods excess in salt (sodium), sugar, or saturated fat, allowing them to make healthier and more informed food choices accordingly. The Government of Bangladesh has already undertaken initiatives to introduce mandatory FOPL, and its swift enactment is now a timely demand. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), unhealthy diet is one of the leading preventable causes of non-communicable diseases (NCDs) and premature death worldwide.  Each year, unhealthy dietary practices are responsible for the deaths of nearly 11 million people globally. The widespread consumption of ultra-processed foods excess in sugar, salt, saturated fat, and trans-fat is significantly increasing the risk of obesity, hypertension, cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, and other non-communicable diseases. In Bangladesh, around 570,000 people die annually from various non-communicable diseases, accounting for approximately 71 percent of total deaths, of which 19 percent are premature. Unhealthy dietary habit is one of the major contributing factors to this high burden of mortality, the workshop presented. The workshop informed that 97 percent of people in the country consume packaged foods at least once a week and most consumers cannot understand the complex nutritional information provided on the back of packets, resulting in a lack of clear understanding about the nutritional value and health risks of the food. So far, 44 countries around the world have introduced FOPL, of which 10 have made it mandatory. Professor Dr. Mohammad Shoeb, Member, Bangladesh Food Safety Authority (BFSA), said, “The government has taken initiatives to introduce the Front-of-Package Labelling system to raise consumer awareness about processed foods. We hope it will be implemented soon.” Abu Ahmed Shamim, Associate Scientist, BRAC James P Grant School of Public Health, said, “It is essential to reduce the dependency on ultra-processed foods to lower the risk of non-communicable diseases. Front-of-Package Labelling system helps consumers choose healthier foods.” Samina Israt, Programme Officer (Diet-Related Risk Factors), World Health Organization (WHO), said, “The introduction of Front-of-Package Labelling (FOPL) in Bangladesh complements existing nutrient declarations, supports national nutrition and health policies, and creates an enabling food environment that promotes healthier dietary behaviors across all population groups.” Muhammad Ruhul Quddus, Bangladesh Country Lead, GHAI, said, “If Front-of-Package Labelling is implemented in Bangladesh, the burden of non-communicable diseases will decrease as well as both government and individual healthcare costs will be reduced.” Reaz Ahmad, Editor, Dhaka Tribune, said, “Until Front-of-Package Labelling is implemented, pressure must be kept on policymakers through continuous reporting.” Mortuza Haider Liton, Convener of Anti-Tobacco Media Alliance-ATMA; Nadira Kiron and Mizan Chowdhury, Co-conveners, ATMA; and ABM Zubair, Executive Director, PROGGA were also present as discussants. PROGGA’s Head of Programs, Md. Hasan Shahriar and Program Officer, Shabnam Mostofa delivered presentations in the workshop.

In an effort to curb illegal fishing and maintain discipline on waterways across the country, members of the River Police arrested 279 people along with illegal nets and fish from different parts of the country in the past seven days till Thursday. The drives were conducted to protect fisheries resources and ensure security on waterways. During the drives, the river police also seized 43,271,280 metres of illegal nets, 4,158 kilograms of fish, 6,57,000 pieces of shrimp fry, 15,000 bagda shrimp fry and 1,328 kilograms of helly-mixed shrimp. Besides, 133 bush piles were destroyed in rivers during the drives. The River Police also filed cases against 83 bulkheads in naval courts for operating without valid documents. A total of 69 cases were filed during this period, including 46 under fisheries laws, nine for reckless navigation, one under the Balumahal Act, two drug-related cases, one theft case, one under the Special Powers Act and one kidnapping case. Twelve bodies were also recovered during the drives, officials said. The seized illegal nets and jelly-mixed shrimp were destroyed, while the shrimp fry were released in the river while the remaining fish were distributed among orphanages.

Bangladesh ODI captain Mehidy Hasan Miraz said Thursday that the sudden elevation of his former teammate Tamim Iqbal to the presidency of the national cricket board provides a distinct advantage for the squad ahead of their series against New Zealand. Tamim took charge as the head of the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) ad-hoc committee on April 7 following a period of intense administrative upheaval. The appointment created an unusual dynamic for the current roster, as Tamim captained the national side as recently as 2023 and played alongside Miraz for Mohammedan Sporting Club in the Dhaka Premier League just last year. Speaking at a press conference at the Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium, Miraz framed the transition from peer to boss as a structural benefit for the players. "Since we played cricket together, he knows us very well," Miraz said. "Because he left playing only recently, he knows what our demands are and what we prefer. This is a positive side for the players." The swift transfer of power at the BCB occurred squarely during the national team's training camp, raising external concerns about potential psychological distractions. However, Miraz insisted the squad successfully insulated itself from the administrative noise. "As professional cricketers, what happens outside does not affect our minds," Miraz said. Bangladesh's capital market closed the week on a cautious note on Thursday, with both Dhaka Stock Exchange (DSE) and Chittagong Stock Exchange (CSE) recording marginal index gains while the majority of listed companies saw their share prices decline. At the DSE, the benchmark DSEX index edged up by just one point, the blue-chip DS30 rose six points, while the Shariah-based DSES remained flat. This offered little comfort to investors as decliners significantly outnumbered gainers. Of the total companies traded on the DSE, 201 saw price falls against 131 gains, while 62 remained unchanged. Turnover also slipped with total transactions falling Tk 30 crore from the previous session to stand at Tk 806 crore, compared to Tk 836 crore the day before. In the block market, shares worth Tk 26 crore changed hands across 38 companies, with Al-Arafah Islami Bank PLC topping the block board at Tk 3.80 crore. Legacy Footwear Limited led the gainers' chart with a 6.25% price increase, while Premier Leasing and Finance Limited bore the steepest loss, shedding over 7% of its value. The CSE mirrored a similar trend, the CASPI gained nearly five points yet failed to reflect broader market health. Of the companies traded, 88 recorded price declines against 86 that advanced, while 34 remained unchanged. Daffodil Computers PLC surged nearly 10% to top the gainers' list, whereas Apex Tannery Limited shed close to 10% to finish at the bottom. Market analysts note that the divergence between index movements and broader price declines suggests selective buying in heavyweight stocks, with overall investor sentiment remaining subdued.

The visiting delegation of the Dhaka Chamber of Commerce & Industry (DCCI) participated in the 6th Guangzhou Sourcing Fair on Wednesday, seeking to expand trade and investment linkages between Bangladesh and China. The delegation, led by DCCI Senior Vice President Razeev H Chowdhury, held B2B matchmaking sessions with around 150 Chinese supplier companies representing sectors, including hardware and tools, automobiles, motorcycles and spare parts, home appliances, and building and construction materials. Speaking at a bilateral discussion on supply chain issues held on the sidelines of the fair, Razeev highlighted the depth of the bilateral relationship, noting that Bangladesh and China share a long-standing multidimensional partnership spanning trade, investment, infrastructure, education, and human resource development. He said total bilateral trade between the two countries reached USD 18.89 billion in FY2025, with Bangladesh's imports from China amounting to USD 18.20 billion against exports of USD 694.49 million, pointing to a significant trade imbalance that both sides acknowledged needs to be addressed. Razeev also extended an invitation to Chinese entrepreneurs to invest in Bangladesh, citing textiles and textile products, machinery, chemicals, metals, plastics, minerals, and agro-based products as priority sectors. Nicole Fan, Director of Poly Jinhan Exhibition (Poly Events), which organises the fair, said the platform will serve as an important bridge between entrepreneurs of the two countries. She expressed optimism that greater Bangladeshi participation in future editions of the fair will open new avenues of collaboration with China's vast supplier network. The Guangzhou Sourcing Fair, now in its sixth edition, has emerged as a key platform for connecting South and Southeast Asian buyers with Chinese manufacturers and exporters across a wide range of industrial and consumer goods sectors. The 22-member DCCI delegation went to on Wednesday on a five-day visit aimed at strengthening Bangladesh-China economic engagement and expand bilateral trade and investment cooperation.

Noted educationist and founder of Bishwo Shahitto Kendro Prof Abdullah Abu Sayeed met Prime Minister Tarique Rahman at the Secretariat on Thursday. The Prime Minister’s Additional Press Secretary Atiqur Rahman Rumon said the meeting took place at the Prime Minister’s Office in the afternoon. He said Prof Abdullah Abu Sayeed discussed with the Prime Minister ways to encourage students to develop reading habits. “The government will work jointly with Bishwo Shahitto Kendro to promote reading habits among students. The programme will be implemented at primary, secondary and higher secondary levels,” Rumon said. Prime Minister’s Adviser on Information and Broadcasting Dr Zahed Ur Rahman was present at the meeting. The Additional Press Secretary also said the Prime Minister hosted a luncheon in honour of Prof Abdullah Abu Sayeed.

Discussions over a new round of face-to-face talks between the United States and Iran are ongoing, the White House said on Tuesday, even as Washington has fully enforced a blockade on Iranian ports and regional mediation efforts have intensified, with no date yet set for the next round of negotiations. On Wednesday, White House spokesperson Karoline Leavitt told a press briefing that the U.S. willingness to hold talks with Iran is contingent on the reopening of the Strait "with no limitations or delays," adding that the next round of talks is likely to take place again in Islamabad, Pakistan. She also denied reports that Washington had formally requested an extension of the current ceasefire, saying both sides remain engaged in dialogue. U.S. officials were cited by media reports as saying that U.S. and Iranian negotiators made progress in talks on Tuesday, moving closer to a framework agreement to end the war. One official said both sides have maintained backchannel communications with all the countries and are "getting closer," while another noted that although the U.S. side is eager for a deal, consensus within the Iranian government remains a key hurdle. Meanwhile, Pakistan has stepped up its shuttle diplomacy to bridge differences between the two sides. Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif arrived in Saudi Arabia on Tuesday, beginning a four-day tour that will also take him to Qatar and Türkiye. On the same day, Pakistan's Chief of Army Staff Asim Munir led a delegation to Tehran, where Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi received him. According to Iran's semi-official Tasnim news agency, Tehran will assess the outcome of its discussions with the Pakistani delegation before deciding whether to engage in another round of talks with the United States. A source cited by the report said that the ceasefire in Lebanon will be a "positive signal" for Iran's decision for the next round of negotiations, while stressing that Washington must drop "excessive demands" and avoid "violating the promises it made before the ceasefire." Uncertainty also persists over whether the ceasefire between the United States and Iran will be extended. Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baghaei said on Tuesday that such speculation could not yet be confirmed, citing what he described as inconsistent U.S. positions and questioning Washington's commitment to honoring any potential agreement. At the same time, the U.S. military said on Tuesday that U.S. forces have completely halted economic trade going into and out of Iran by sea in less than 36 hours since the blockade was implemented. However, a report by British maritime analytics firm Windward indicated that some ships have managed to bypass the restrictions. It said that "Iranian crude and refined product exports remained active, supported by dark loading activity at Kharg Island, Bandar Abbas, and sanctioned tanker movements." Diplomatic efforts have also drawn broader international attention. Russia and Saudi Arabia on Tuesday underscored the need to continue political and diplomatic engagement between Washington and Tehran under Pakistan's mediation. In a phone call on Wednesday, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov and his Saudi counterpart Faisal bin Farhan Al Saud expressed support for an inclusive dialogue involving all stakeholders aimed at guaranteeing long-term stability and security in the region. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov was quoted as saying on Wednesday that the United States had rejected its proposal that Russia take all of Iran's enriched uranium out of the country as a way to help resolve the Middle East conflict, but Russian President Vladimir Putin is ready to return to it. "This would be a good decision. But unfortunately the American side rejected this proposal," he said. Despite signs of diplomatic movement, key differences remain and the path toward a comprehensive agreement remains uncertain.

The Media Resources Development Initiative (MRDI) will organise a two-day journalism conference in Dhaka on May 8-9, bringing together journalists, editors, researchers, civil society members, teachers, students and international experts to discuss challenges facing the profession and how to plan for its future. The Bangladesh Journalism Conference 2026 will be held at Radisson Blue Dhaka Water Garden hotel, MRDI Executive Director Hasibur Rahman announced at a press conference at The Daily Star Centre on Thursday. He said the conference will feature 12 sessions and over 20 discussants, with more than 500 participants expected.  Journalists and experts from over 10 countries are also expected to join the event. The countries from which participation has so far been confirmed include India, Pakistan, Nepal, Indonesia, Malaysia, Canada, the United States, the United Kingdom and Portugal apart from Bangladesh. Hasibur Rahman said the MRDI wants to hold the conference every two years and hopes such journalism conferences can be organised in Bangladesh in a structured way. It will set up four help desks at the venue on investigative journalism, right to information, fact-checking and mental health support. Registration will open on a dedicated microsite at 12:01am tomorrow. It will be on ‘first-come, first-served’ basis, but final selection will be made by the organisers. Journalists working at local, national and international media outlets, including those based outside Bangladesh, will be eligible to register. Teachers, researchers, fact-checkers, development partners, civil society members and MRDI alumni will also be able to apply. Students will need to complete MRDI’s online basic journalism course to participate. Those who score highest, within the limited number of seats, will be selected. Hasibur Rahman also announced fellowship opportunities for 15 journalists from outside Dhaka where applicants will have to submit story ideas in advance, and fellows will be selected through evaluation, adding that they will receive mentorship support from the MRDI. The BALLOT programme, a UNESCO and UN initiative, is the platinum partner. Other partners include Fojo Media Institute, IREX, Fondation Hirondelle, The Self Investigation, GFMD and Radisson.

Frequent power outages amid a supply shortfall have made daily life increasingly difficult for residents in Khulna as prolonged load-shedding continues in the city and surrounding areas. Amid intense heat, repeated power cuts have left people frustrated, with little relief even during nighttime. Local people electricity outages often begin just as temperatures remain high, depriving them of sleep for hours. Children, the elderly and the sick are facing the worst of the situation, they said. Many residents alleged that sudden, unannounced power cuts are disrupting their daily activities, while also affecting businesses. Quoting the central control room of the West Zone Power Distribution Company Limited (WZPDCL), Chief Executive Engineer Rokon Uzzaman said power demand in Khulna stood at 653 megawatts at 10am on April 16, against a supply of 550 megawatts, resulting in a shortfall of 103 megawatts. Earlier, on April 15 at 1pm, demand was 750 megawatts while supply was 572 megawatts, leading to load-shedding of 178 megawatts. The same day at 9pm, demand was recorded at 686 megawatts against a supply of 542 megawatts, causing a deficit of 144 megawatts. Md Solaiman, a resident of Sheikhpara, said, “Load-shedding is continuing round the clock. Electricity goes off every hour. Children are suffering badly in this heat.” Residents urged the authorities to take immediate steps to ensure stable power supply and reduce load-shedding during the intense heat.

Pakistan’s army chief is visiting Tehran on Thursday to hold talks with Iranian officials, aiming to revive negotiations between the United States and Iran and extend an existing ceasefire that has paused nearly seven weeks of conflict in the region. The war — involving Israel, the U.S. and Iran — has left thousands dead and shaken global markets, particularly by disrupting oil supplies. Although the ceasefire has held so far, doubts remain over whether ongoing diplomatic efforts can produce a lasting agreement as it reaches the midpoint of its initial two-week duration. The visit comes amid broader diplomatic activity. US President Donald Trump said leaders of Israel and Lebanon could speak later Thursday about ending hostilities, which would mark their first direct contact in over three decades. However, officials from both sides have not confirmed the possible talks, while cross-border attacks between Israel and Hezbollah continued. The White House indicated that any renewed negotiations between Washington and Tehran may be held in Islamabad, though no final decision has been made. Despite tensions — including a US naval blockade of Iranian ports and threats of retaliation from Tehran — the ceasefire remains largely intact. Pakistan has positioned itself as a key mediator after previously hosting direct US-Iran discussions in Islamabad, which reportedly helped narrow differences. Efforts are underway to resume dialogue before the ceasefire expires next week. The conflict has had widespread economic repercussions, disrupting shipping routes and damaging infrastructure across the Middle East. Oil prices have shown signs of easing amid hopes for peace, while US stock markets have rebounded to record levels. Meanwhile, uncertainty persists over possible Israel-Lebanon talks. Though an Israeli minister suggested Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu could speak with Lebanese President Joseph Aoun, neither government has officially confirmed such plans. Hostilities between Israel and Hezbollah have continued, with rocket and drone attacks reported alongside intensified Israeli strikes in southern Lebanon. Regional officials say there has been some progress in US-Iran negotiations, with reports of a preliminary understanding to extend the ceasefire. Independent lawmaker elected from Brahmanbaria-2 Rumeen Farhana on Thursday painted a grim picture of the healthcare system in Brahmanbaria’s Sarail upazila, describing the local 50-bed hospital as being like a patient itself. She made the remarks in Parliament while discussing an amendment to a proposal for establishing a 200-bed hospital in Siddhirganj of Narayanganj. Highlighting the plight of approximately 350,000 residents across nine unions in Sarail, Rumeen Farhana emphasised that the lone 50-bed facility is struggling with a massive shortage of manpower, medicines, and modern equipment. According to the data presented by the MP, a total of 64 posts are currently vacant at the hospital. This includes nine for physicians and consultants, six for nurses, two for medical technologists, 15 for field staff, eight for health assistants, and 19 for other staff members. The MP further informed the House that an initiative to modernise the hospital’s infrastructure is currently in limbo. While a plan was adopted to construct a six-storey building at a cost of Tk 10 crore, the project hit a dead end. The contractor fled after August 5, 2024, she said, adding that medical services are being forced to continue within the confines of the old, dilapidated two-storey building. The discussion arose during a proposal placed by Azharul Islam Mannan (Narayanganj-3) for a new 200-bed hospital in Siddhirganj. Several other MPs joined the debate, highlighting similar healthcare crises and demanding an increase in beds at hospitals in their respective constituencies. In response, Health and Family Welfare Minister Sardar Md Sakhawat Husain noted that the 300-bed General Hospital near Siddhirganj is already being upgraded to a 500-bed facility, and the Victoria General Hospital is also nearby. He assured that the government might consider new hospitals in the future if necessary. Following the minister’s explanation, Mannan expressed his intent to withdraw the proposal. The proposal for the 200-bed hospital in Siddhirganj was subsequently withdrawn via voice vote with the Speaker's permission.

National Citizen Party (NCP) Member Secretary and Rangpur-4 lawmaker, Akhter Hossen, expressed sharp indignation in Parliament on Thursday over the sudden postponement of the Bangladesh Bar Council election, questioning the government's conflicting stance on the country’s energy situation. Raising the issue on a point of order, Hossen criticised a midnight notice that stayed the election, which was originally scheduled for May 19. He pointed out that while the government repeatedly denies any energy shortage in Parliament, a statutory body like the Bar Council has cited a severe energy crisis as the reason for the delay. Hossen argued that the Bar Council is currently governed by an ad-hoc committee, a measure usually reserved for extreme circumstances like a pandemic. He noted that although the transition to a democratic process had begun with the announcement of the May 19 polls, the sudden suspension raises questions about political intent. "When we discuss energy shortages in the House, the government insists there is no crisis," Hossen stated. "Yet, a statutory body under the Ministry of Law suspends its election citing the very same energy crisis. What is the real issue? Is it truly energy, or an attempt to keep a democratic institution politicized?" The MP called for a formal statement from both the Law Minister and the Energy Minister to clarify the discrepancy. In response, Law Minister Asaduzzaman dismissed the allegations of government interference, asserting that the Bar Council is an autonomous body that makes its own decisions based on legal provisions. The Minister clarified that while the energy crisis was mentioned, there were other legally sound reasons that the NCP MP chose to omit. According to the Law Minister, several bar associations, including the Dhaka Bar, had requested a postponement to ensure their local election processes remained undisturbed. The Minister noted that the Bar Council acted independently using its own wisdom and professional judgment. He further explained that multiple bar associations requested the delay to ensure the smooth conduct of their own ongoing internal polls. Finally, he emphasised that the postponement falls under valid legal frameworks beyond just pandemic or awkward situations. The Law Minister stated that the government is committed to a free and fair election for the Bar Council and denied any involvement in the council’s internal administrative decisions.  

The election to the Bangladesh Bar Council, the regulatory body for lawyers across the country, has been postponed amid the ongoing fuel crisis triggered by the Middle East conflict. The decision was announced in a press release issued on Wednesday. According to the previously announced schedule, the election was set to be held on May 19. The release said the decision to postpone the polls was taken at an emergency meeting held at the Bar Council building on Wednesday. The decision comes amid concerns that the fuel crisis across the country could disrupt election-related activities and campaigning. It also said the decision was made after considering requests from various bar associations, including the Supreme Court Bar Association, Dhaka Bar Association and Chattogram District Bar Association. The election was scheduled to fill 14 posts, including seven general seats and seven regional seats. The Bar Council election is held every three years. Of the 14 members, seven are elected from general seats, while the remaining seven are elected from regional bar associations. The vice chairman is elected by the 14 members, while the attorney general serves as the chairman of the council by virtue of the position.

Four people were killed in separate incidents of lightning strikes in Chuadanga, Jashore and Jhenaidah districts on Thursday. In Chuadanga, two people including a schoolboy were killed in separate incidents of lightning strikes in Jibannagar and Damurhuda upazilas of Chuadanga district on Thursday. In Jibannagar upazila, Russel Hosain, 25, son of Rezaul Hossain of Ghoshnagar village, fell unconscious when a thunderbolt struck on him while working at a field at noon. Later, he was taken to Jibannagar Upazila Health Complex where the doctors declared him dead, said Solaiman Sheikh, officer-in-charge of Jibannagar Police Station. In Damurhuda upazila, Ajimuddin, 15, a class IX student of Darshana Memnagar BD Secondary High School and son of Tajimul Islam of Parkrishnapur village, was killed when a streak of thunderbolt struck him while heading towards his father to provide food in the afternoon, said Mehedi Hasan, officer-in-charge of Darshana Police Station. In Jhenaidah, a 32-year-old housewife was killed when a thunderbolt struck her while she was working in the yard amid rain at Bathangachi village in Maheshpur upazila of the district, said Mehedi Hasan, officer-in-charge of Maheshpur Police Station. The deceased was identified as Rozina Khatun, wife of Mizanur Rahman of the village. In Jashore, a 68-year-old farmer was killed when a streak of thunderbolt struck him when returning to his home from filed at Shahapur village in Manirampur upazila of Jashore district. The deceased was identified as Lutfur Sardar.

China’s economy picked up pace in the first quarter of the year, growing 5% compared to the same period last year, as it largely withstood the early effects of the Iran war, according to official data released . The January–March figures, which cover the period when the conflict began, came in stronger than economists had predicted and improved from the 4.5% growth recorded in the previous October–December quarter. On a quarterly basis, the economy expanded by 1.3% in the first three months, marking its fastest growth rate in a year. Experts say China, the world’s second-largest economy, is likely to manage the short-term impact of the war, now in its seventh week. However, rising energy prices driven by the conflict are adding to inflation pressures and weighing on global growth. Over time, weaker global demand could affect Chinese exports. The International Monetary Fund recently lowered its 2026 growth forecast for China to 4.4%, reflecting broader global economic concerns linked to the conflict. Chinese authorities had earlier set a growth target of 4.5% to 5% for this year, the lowest since 1991. “China can likely weather short term disruptions, but a prolonged war and sustained high energy prices could begin to slow growth in the second half of the year,” said Lynn Song. Separate data released showed China’s industrial output rose 5.7% in March from a year earlier, beating expectations as global demand for electronics, vehicles, semiconductors and robotics remained strong. However, retail sales increased by just 1.7%, falling short of forecasts and slowing from 2.8% growth in the first two months of the year, highlighting weak domestic consumer demand. China’s prolonged real estate downturn has continued to hurt consumer and investor confidence. Still, the country achieved around 5% growth last year, supported by strong exports that pushed its trade surplus to nearly $1.2 trillion, despite higher tariffs imposed by US President Donald Trump. Economists say exports will remain a key driver of China’s economy this year, but heavy reliance on them could pose risks. “The lack of a quick resolution to the Iran war is likely to slow global growth, reducing other countries’ capacity to import Chinese goods,” said Eswar Prasad. He added that as countries focus on protecting their own economies from the impact of the conflict, demand for Chinese imports is likely to weaken. China reported earlier this week that exports grew 2.5% in March compared to a year earlier, a noticeable slowdown from the previous two months, partly due to seasonal factors. While economists believe China could still meet its annual growth target through policy support, concerns remain. Increased public investment may help sustain overall growth, but without stronger consumer demand, it could deepen deflation risks and further increase dependence on exports.

Pakistan has said the United States and Iran are willing to resume negotiations soon, although no date has yet been finalised. Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Md. Asaduzzaman on Thursday told Parliament that more than 40 lakh cases were pending in the subordinate courts across the country at the end of 2025. “A total of 40,41,924 cases were pending in the lower courts across the country as of December 31, 2025,” he said, while replying to scripted questions from opposition bench (Jamaat) lawmakers Md. Quamrul Hassan (Mymensingh-6) and Md Nurul Islam (Chapainawabganj-3) in the House. The Law Minister said the government has undertaken multidimensional measures to ensure speedy and effective disposal of the huge backlog of cases. He said the government remains committed to alleviating the sufferings of justice-seekers and ensuring quick, transparent and affordable justice. “Once the measures are implemented gradually, the government is optimistic that the number of pending cases would decline significantly, enabling people to receive timely justice,” he said. The Law Ministry would also consider public suggestions to reduce the backlog of cases and improve access to justice. Focusing on the measures taken by the current government, he said the Code of Civil Procedure (Amendment) Bill, 2026 has already been passed in Parliament to introduce time-befitting reforms. The amendments include provisions for issuing summons through SMS and voice calls, submission of plaints and written statements through affidavits, and allowing direct cross-examination. It also allows filing applications directly in the original cases for decree execution instead of filing separate suits. To ensure faster disposal of criminal cases, he said the Code of Criminal Procedure (Amendment) Bill, 2026 created scope for waiving proclamation and attachment procedures in certain cases involving absconding accused to reduce unnecessary delays. “It also introduces digital methods for serving summons, ensuring greater use of technology in judicial proceedings,” He further said that under the Information Technology Act, 2020, testimonies of investigating officers, doctors, and magistrates recording confessional statements of accused are being taken online, facilitating quicker trial proceedings. To reduce the backlog of cases, he said the government has already created 871 courts and also 232 new posts of judges, he said. The Law Minister said the process is underway to create 304 more judge posts, while recruitment of 150 civil judges is ongoing. He said the Bangladesh Judicial Service Commission has recommended recruitment of 708 judicial staff, with the process for appointing another 553 staff also in progress. He said a special committee led by the Solicitor has been formed to accelerate the investigation and trial of high-profile cases, including those related to violence against women and children. The minister also highlighted efforts to strengthen legal aid services, including increasing the number of judges at district legal aid offices, appointing experienced mediators, and operating a toll-free legal aid hotline (16699). Md. Asaduzzaman said cause lists of both subordinate and higher courts have been made fully online, allowing people to check hearing dates from home. “This has enhanced transparency and reduced harassment in the trial process,” he said. Besides, the minister mentioned several other measures taken to reduce the backlog of cases in the lower courts across the country.

A total of 93 percent merit quota is being followed in the recruitment to 1st class and 2nd class government jobs in line with a circular issued in July 2024, State Minister for Public Administration Md Abdul Bari told Parliament on Thursday. “Quota system is being followed in the recruitment to the first and second class government jobs,” he said, while replying to a scripted question from opposition Jamaat lawmaker Md Nurul Islam (Chapainawabganj-3). Certificate verify The Minister said according to a gazette notification issued by the Ministry of Public Administration on July 23, 2024, 93 percent of positions are filled based on merit, 5 percent are reserved for children of freedom fighters, martyred freedom fighters and Birangonas (war heroine), 1 percent for ethnic minorities, and 1 percent for persons with disabilities and third gender persons. Replying to another scripted question from treasury bench lawmaker Md Shamsur Rahman Simul Biswas (Pabna-5), Abdul Bari said 12 officers of the BCS administration cadre were forced into retirement, 39 were dismissed from service, and 564 were made officers on special duty (OSD) in the 16 past years during the previous Awami League government regime. He also said allegations of corruption and politicisation in BCS cadre recruitment during the previous Awami League government are currently under investigation by the Anti-Corruption Commission and other law enforcement agencies. “Legal action will be taken based on the investigation reports and recommendations,” he added. Responding to a tabled starred question from ruling party lawmaker Sarwar Jamal Nizam (Chattogram-13, the state minister said the total number of vacant posts in all the ministries and government offices stands at 468,220, according to the latest Statistics of Public Servants 2024 published based on updated manpower data as of December 31, 2023. Of these, 68,884 posts fall under 1st–9th grades, 129,166 under 10th–12th grades, 146,799 under 13th–16th grades and 115,235 under grades 17th–20th. Besides, there are 8,136 vacant posts under honorary, fixed-pay and contractual categories. The minister said short-, medium-, and long-term action plans—spanning six months, one year, and five years—have already been formulated to fill the vacancies in the government services. Under the six-month plan, recruitment to 2,879 posts under the Public Administration Ministry will be completed, while 4,459 posts are expected to be filled within one year. He added that the Public Administration Ministry has also sent letters to other ministries and divisions seeking updated information on recruitment progress and vacant posts to ensure the transparent and prompt recruitment of nearly 500,000 government employees as outlined in the action plan.

Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Md. Asaduzzaman on Thursday told Parliament that the government has taken effective steps to withdraw politically motivated harassment cases filed during the tenure of the previous Awami League regime. “The current government is fully aware about the withdrawal of politically motivated harassment cases filed during the previous Awami League regime and has already taken effective steps in this regard,” he said while replying to a scripted question from treasury bench member Md. Monowar Hosen (Magura-1). The Minister said the interim government had formed a committee to review such cases and based on its policy decision, no murder case was withdrawn. He said the present government on March 5, 2026 constituted district level four-member committees, led by the deputy commissioners, to recommend withdrawal of politically motivated harassment cases. Subsequently, on March 8, 2026, a six-member “central committee” headed by the Law Minister was formed to take final decisions based on the recommendations received from the district committees. “The central committee is currently examining the recommendations and continuing the process of case withdrawal,” he added. The minister further said that if any person, including Members of Parliament (MPs), applies through due process for withdrawal of politically motivated, false and harassment cases (including murder cases), the district and central committees will review those cases. Necessary decisions will be taken if any case is found to have been filed for political harassment, he said. “The government is sincerely committed to ensure relief for the victims from the politically motivated harassment cases,” said the Law Minister.

Israeli forces continued attacks in southern Lebanon on Thursday, with reports of ongoing artillery shelling and air strikes, according to local sources. Earlier, the Israeli military reportedly warned residents south of the Zahrani River in southern Lebanon to move north amid escalating tensions in the area. Anthony Albanese said his government has secured an additional 100 million litres of diesel from Brunei and South Korea to strengthen fuel security amid global supply concerns. Speaking to reporters during a visit to Malaysia, the Australian prime minister said the fuel will arrive in two separate shipments. He noted that one consignment will come from Brunei, where he had visited earlier, while the other will be supplied by South Korea. Bangladesh has called for stronger global cooperation to bridge the digital divide and build robust data systems. Permanent Representative of Bangladesh to the United Nations Ambassador Salahuddin Noman Chowdhury made the call while delivering the country’s statement at the 59th Session of the Commission on Population and Development (CPD59) at the UN Headquarters in New York on Wednesday. He underscored the need for strengthening research and data systems, bridging the digital divide through enhanced international cooperation, technology transfer and capacity building and promoting the ethical use of emerging technologies with strong data privacy safeguards. Ambassador Salahuddin also highlighted the importance of investing in digital skills, particularly for women and youth. Highlighting the critical role of technology and research in achieving ICPD objectives and the Sustainable Development Goals, he noted that nearly one-third of the global population still lacks internet access, limiting opportunities in essential services. In his statement, the Ambassador underlined Bangladesh’s progress in reducing maternal mortality, expanding immunisation coverage, strengthening community-based healthcare, promoting women’s empowerment and enhancing collaboration with research institutions. He also emphasised the use of digital health solutions, including telemedicine and real-time disease surveillance. Stressing the importance of investing in youth, skills development and innovation, Salahuddin Noman acknowledged challenges such as urbanisation, climate change, and non-communicable diseases as barrier for sustainable development.

Nineteen children showing symptoms consistent with measles were admitted to the Chapainawabganj district hospital over a 24-hour period from 12:00am on Tuesday to 12:00am on Wednesday. Hospital sources said children with fever, rash, and cold-like symptoms continue to arrive every day, putting pressure on the 250-bed district hospital. Authorities have already opened an isolation corner to manage the situation, but overcrowding has forced some children to receive treatment on the floor due to a shortage of beds. During the 24-hour period, 44 children recovered and were discharged, while three serious cases were referred to Rajshahi Medical College Hospital for advanced treatment. At present, 75 children remain admitted at the hospital with similar symptoms. Since January this year, a total of 721 children have received treatment at the hospital with measles-like symptoms, and four deaths have been reported during this period. Resident Medical Officer Dr Abdus Samad of the hospital said not all cases have been confirmed as measles. In many cases, heat-related rashes along with fever and cold symptoms are being mistaken for measles, causing panic among guardians. He advised that hospital admission is not necessary for every suspected case, urging parents to seek doctor advice and manage mild cases at home if possible, given the ongoing bed shortage.

Football star Lionel Messi has been sued by a Miami-based event promoter who claims he broke the terms of a $7 million contract by failing to play in a scheduled exhibition match last year. According to court records, Vid Music Group filed a lawsuit last month in a Miami-Dade circuit court, accusing Messi and the Argentine Football Association (AFA) of fraud and breach of contract. The company says it had secured exclusive rights to organize and promote Argentina’s friendly matches against Venezuela and Puerto Rico in October, in return for ticket sales, broadcast rights and sponsorship revenue. It claims the agreement required Messi to play at least 30 minutes in each match unless he was injured. Messi did not play in Argentina’s 1-0 win over Venezuela on October 10, instead watching from a suite at Hard Rock Stadium in Florida. However, he played the following day for his club Inter Miami in an MLS match, where he scored twice in a 4-0 win over Atlanta United. He later featured in Argentina’s 6-0 victory over Puerto Rico on October 14. That match had originally been scheduled in Chicago but was moved to Florida amid low ticket sales and security concerns. The promoter alleges it suffered losses running into millions of dollars due to Messi’s absence from one match and poor attendance at the other. Messi and the AFA have not yet responded to the lawsuit.

A second US-sanctioned supertanker has entered the Gulf through the Strait of Hormuz, according to shipping data cited by Reuters. Maritime intelligence data from LSEG and Kpler showed that the empty very large crude carrier (VLCC) RHN entered the Gulf on Wednesday. The vessel, capable of carrying up to two million barrels of oil, is currently heading to an undisclosed destination. Earlier on Wednesday, Iran’s Fars News Agency reported that an Iranian supertanker sanctioned by the United States had crossed the strait and reached the direction of Imam Khomeini port, despite what it described as a blockade. The developments come amid heightened tensions in the region following the reported US naval operation in the area. China has long tried to boost its global influence through cultural diplomacy, but this viral trend appears to be achieving what official efforts could not. Even Chinese Ambassador to the United States Xie Feng recently mentioned the phenomenon while promoting a visa-free transit policy and encouraging Americans to visit China. The trend reflects a broader rise in the global popularity of Chinese culture, products and everyday practices. Experts say this growing appeal shows how China is gaining “soft power” — influence through culture and lifestyle rather than politics or military strength. Shaoyu Yuan, a professor at New York University, said Chinese culture is becoming more familiar and widely accepted worldwide through entertainment, consumer products and daily habits. China’s influence is supported by its strong position in industries such as manufacturing, social media and consumer goods. A US YouTuber who caused widespread anger in South Korea with a series of offensive online stunts has been sentenced to six months in prison. The Seoul Western District Court on Wednesday found Ramsey Khalid Ismael, known online as Johnny Somali, guilty of several charges, including disrupting businesses and sharing fake sexually explicit content. Prosecutors had asked for a three-year jail term. Ismael was also accused of harassing people at an amusement park, creating disturbances at a convenience store by playing loud music and throwing noodles on a table, and causing similar disruptions on public transport. He was also charged with distributing deepfake videos without consent. The court said the 25-year-old showed serious disregard for South Korean laws and hurt many people through his livestreamed actions aimed at earning money on YouTube. He was taken into custody immediately after the verdict, as the court considered him a flight risk. In October 2024, Ismael triggered public outrage after posting a video of himself kissing and performing a lap dance on a statue honoring victims of Japan’s wartime sexual slavery. He later apologized, saying he did not understand the importance of the monument. Ismael, who had been banned from leaving South Korea during the trial, earlier told reporters he regretted his actions and wanted to apologize to the public.

A mobile court has sentenced a Union Parishad (UP) member to 15-day imprisonment for illegally stockpiling diesel in Sadar upazila of Chuadanga district. The drive was conducted from 5:30pm to 8:00pm on Wednesday at Amirpur village under Mominpur union. The mobile court, led by acting Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) and Assistant Commissioner (Land) Aminul Islam, with support from Sadar Police Station, carried out the raid on the residence of UP member Shahinur Islam. During the drive, it found that Shahinur had illegally stored five barrels of diesel (around 1,000 litres) at his home, allegedly for selling at higher prices. He was convicted under the Consumer Rights Protection Act and sentenced to 15 days of simple imprisonment along with a fine of Tk 20,000. Officials said the seized diesel has been kept at the UNO office.

Rail communication on the Dhaka-Mymensingh route resumed early Thursday after remaining suspended for nearly four hours due to the fall of a tree on the track. The disruption triggered around 9:30pm on Wednesday when a large tree collapsed on the railway track at Jabbar’s Mor adjacent to Bangladesh Agricultural University (BAU), halting train movement on the route. Mymensingh-bound Jamuna Express got stranded at the spot, leading to a complete suspension of rail services. On information, police and members of the BAU Fire Station rushed to the scene and initiated efforts to clear the line. According to fire service officials, they received the emergency call through the national emergency helpline 999 around 10:00pm and promptly began a rescue operation. After nearly three hours of effort, the uprooted tree was removed from the track around 1:15am, they said. Train movement between Dhaka and Mymensingh resumed around 1:30am, restoring the rail link.
