The fifth edition of the Red Sea International Film Festival, one of the Middle East’s largest film festivals, opened Thursday in the coastal city of Jeddah, marking a significant moment for the kingdom’s growing film industry. Running from Dec. 4 to 13, the Red Sea International Film Festival brings together filmmakers and talent from around the world, screening more than 100 films from over 70 countries. The festival’s prestigious “Red Sea: Competition” strand features a selection of 16 narrative features, animations and documentaries from the Arab world, Asia and Africa, all vying for the top honor: the Yusr Awards, which will be presented at the closing ceremony. The festival takes place in Jeddah’s Al-Balad district — a UNESCO World Heritage site — blending Saudi heritage with international cinema. This year, the selection jury is being led by the Academy Award-winning filmmaker Sean Baker, best known for “Anora,” which won five Oscars, four of which went to Sean Baker himself. “This festival is really exciting because of how big it’s become just in the last five years,” Baker said. “It’s rare that I see a festival just exploding in terms of importance and impact on world cinema.” The festival opens with “Giant,” a true story of legendary British-Yemeni boxing champion Prince Naseem ‘Naz’ Hamed. The film stars Egyptian-British actor Amir El-Masry as Hamed and Pierce Brosnan as his Irish trainer, Brendan Ingle, and is directed by British filmmaker Rowan Athale. “It was probably one of the hardest roles I’ve ever done,” El-Masry said, noting that his preparation involved four and a half weeks of training, during which he lost about eight kilos. “It’s been a passion project for me for a long time,” said Athale. “I come from a similar neighborhood — actually within a few miles of Naz. He was a hero of mine growing up, particularly being multiracial in the region. I’ve always wanted to make a film about him. So it’s a privilege to make it.” Reflecting on the premiere, he added, “To have it as the opening night film here — I mean, look at this. I’ve never seen anything like this. Not at Cannes, not anywhere. It’s daunting, it’s terrifying, but it’s an honor.” The opening night drew a wide range of international stars, including Hollywood and Bollywood figures including Adrien Brody, Sir Michael Caine, Vin Diesel and Ana de Armas walking the red carpet. Veteran actor Giancarlo Esposito, also attending the festival, said the gathering reflects the unifying power of cinema. “This celebration at the Red Sea Film Festival is really about celebrating film,” he said. The Red Sea International Film Festival was founded by Saudi Arabia’s Ministry of Culture and supported by the Red Sea Film Foundation. It is funded by the kingdom’s Public Investment Fund sovereign wealth fund and private sponsors. It aims to play a vital role in promoting regional filmmakers and fostering global connections. The festival is part of Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030 objectives, which include diversifying the economy, strengthening cultural infrastructure and fostering local creative talent. The event comes as Saudi Arabia invests heavily in sectors like film, gaming and sports as part of its broader transformation efforts. However, various rights groups have criticized these actions, saying they serve to draw away attention from the kingdom’s human rights record, including its high rate of executions and restrictions on free expression.

The deadliest fire in Hong Kong in decades is piling pressure on Beijing’s “patriots-only” governance system, casting a shadow on elections widely seen as a further step to tighten control over the city's legislature. Sunday's vote to elect new lawmakers to Hong Kong's 90-member Legislative Council comes just 11 days after a massive fire engulfed seven towers in a high-rise apartment complex, killing at least 159 people in the financial hub's worst blaze since 1948. With many voters in the city grown politically apathetic since China’s crackdown shut out the pro-democracy camp in recent years, Sunday's turnout rate will be a key barometer of public sentiment toward the government and its handling of the fire. While there hasn’t yet been significant public protests because of the chilling effect of a wide-ranging security crackdown that started five years ago, some residents have raised concerns among friends, on social media and to reporters about government oversight in building maintenance projects and official investigation efforts. Nearly 40% of incumbents, including household names and mildly vocal politicians, are stepping aside for this election. More candidates with mainland Chinese business links, as well as more members of China’s parliament, are joining the race. Observers suggest the candidate lineup signals Beijing’s tightening control over even its loyalists and a preference for politicians more in tune with its agenda. A change of guard Starting in late September, many veteran lawmakers announced one by one that they would not seek reelection. Regina Ip, a leading member of Hong Kong’s cabinet, said she wanted to pass the torch to the younger generation and denied that age was a factor. Several relatively outspoken lawmakers also stepped aside. One of them, Doreen Kong, insisted she faced no pressure to bow out. The changes drew wide attention to the legislature, now filled with Beijing loyalists after China overhauled electoral rules in 2021. Under the rules, the number of directly elected seats was reduced from 35 to 20. Forty other seats are chosen by a predominantly pro-Beijing election committee, with voters in professional, business and other designated sectors picking another 30 for their industries. All candidates must pass official vetting, including by national security authorities. Pro-democracy politicians in the legislature have completely disappeared after many were arrested under a 2020 national security law Beijing imposed to quell the massive protests that started in 2019. The pro-Beijing camp praised the new model’s efficiency, but Hong Kong think tank POD Research Institute in September said its survey showed growing public concerns about the quality of debate in the legislature. More candidates with mainland Chinese ties The new candidate pool marks a deeper change. The Associated Press found that at least 26 of 161 candidates, or 16%, held positions in Chinese-funded businesses without declaring party affiliations — almost double the figure reported by local newspaper South China Morning Post in the 2021 election. Most were connected to state-owned enterprises. Among all candidates, 16 are delegates to China's top legislature — more than double from the last election — and 13 others are members of China's top political advisory body. The directly-elected seats drew more candidates than four years ago, including district councilors handling municipal matters. Still, many of those new candidates are not familiar names to voters. John Burns, an honorary professor of politics and public administration at the University of Hong Kong, said the central government has “very much controlled” the city's elections since 2021. Burns said it appears that the central authorities have a new informal criterion on an upper age limit and possibly less appetite for outspoken lawmakers. He said members of China's legislature and political advisory body are more in tune with Beijing's agenda, while those who work for state-owned enterprises are under more control by the central authorities, in addition to having better resources for their roles. “They’re trying to ensure that the new people adopt a national perspective, national agenda ... and not focus on sectional interests, not focus on vested interests, and not perhaps representing the concerns of people in Hong Kong,” he said. He added that central authorities also appeared to be trying to minimize the influence of traditional political parties. Other new faces joining the race include Olympic fencing champion Vivian Kong, who has faced questions over her eligibility to run in the tourism sector. She cleared the official vetting process in November after citing her efforts to promote horse racing tourism. Candidates defend dual roles Hong Kong leader John Lee maintained that personnel changes in the election are normal during a change of term, and condemned attempts by “opposing forces” to smear the election with accusations of interference. He added it’s justifiable for Beijing to care about the election. Incumbent finance lawmaker Ronick Chan, an adviser at Bank of China (Hong Kong) Limited, whose parent company is a state-owned commercial bank, said working in Chinese-funded enterprises does not conflict with serving as a legislator. “Employees of Chinese-funded enterprises frequently engage with national policies in their daily work," he said in a text message. “That helps Hong Kong better understand the central government’s concerns and facilitates the city's service to and integration into national development.” His rival Ip Tsz-kin, who works in the Bank of Communications (Hong Kong) — also affiliated with another state-owned bank — told the SCMP that candidates must work for Hong Kong's future development regardless of their company background. He did not reply to the AP’s request for comment. During an election candidate forum, candidate Rex Lai said patriot organizations can mobilize volunteers to support relief efforts in a disaster. In November, China’s Hong Kong affairs office said the pool of new candidates will boost the development of “high-quality democracy” that suits Hong Kong. It said the legislature needs new blood, and that the participation of professional elites from new sectors, innovation industries and think tanks, among other areas, signals hopes for better alignment with China’s next five-year plan. Push for turnout could be dampened by fire aftermath Voter turnout rate in the 2021 election had dropped to 30.2%, a record low. Officials have been pulling out all the stops to boost that figure until the fire brought a temporary halt. Burns noted that about 60% of the popular vote went to the pro-democracy camp in past elections before 2021. He believed those voters would continue to stay away from Sunday's election. He said that while some pro-government voters would be grateful for the authorities' response to the fire, others could have reservations about voting due to the systemic problems uncovered by the fire and the huge death toll. To drive up turnout, the government has extended voting hours, added voting stations and offered subsidies to centers for older adults and people with disabilities. City leader Lee urged civil servants to vote and companies provided time off for employees casting ballots. Authorities have made arrests over social media content that allegedly discouraged voting or for damaging promotional election materials. “This fire has run a truck right through that campaign,” Burns said. “That makes it very difficult for the authorities to better the thirty percent, and so probably it will be lower."

The sun rises over the capital’s seven historic colleges, casting long shadows across empty classrooms and silent corridors. Soon, they are meant to combine their resources to form the Dhaka Central University (DCU), a dream wrought from years of student protests. Yet the air is thick with uncertainty. The ordinance that would breathe life into the university is yet to be issued, debates flare over the role of BCS Education Cadre teachers, and structural concerns for female students echo through the deserted halls. The fate of the revered higher secondary programs hangs by a thread. DCU’s story is yet to unfold, a drama of ambition, conflict, and hope waiting to ignite - that may yet be left in the lurch. Journey to a New University The seven colleges—Dhaka College, Eden Mohila College, Govt. Shaheed Suhrawardy College, Kabi Nazrul Govt. College, Begum Badrunnesa Govt. Mohila College, Mirpur Govt. Bangla College, and Govt. Titumir College—were brought under Dhaka University (DU) in February 2017 after decades under the National University system. Nearly 200,000 students study in these colleges. Claiming academic discrimination and delayed sessions under DU, students renewed their longstanding demand for a separate university during the 2024 student movement. Following the success of that movement, that seemingly opened the doors for various groups to realise their demands through street protests, the seven colleges' own movement gained momentum. In response, the Education Ministry formed a four-member expert committee under the University Grants Commission (UGC) to design a structural framework for the colleges. Following student agitation and clashes with DU students on January 27, steps were initiated to formally detach the colleges from DU. The UGC proposed an interim structure under which a principal-level administrator, supervised by a UGC member, would run the institution until a full university system was set. A decade on, Uttara lake development still stuck in limbo The name Dhaka Central University was finalized after consultations. On May 18, 2025, retired Dhaka College principal Prof. A.K.M. Ilias was appointed as interim administrator for two years. Admission notices followed in July, and results for the first undergraduate batch were released on August 26. Around 72,000 students applied for 11,150 seats across Science, Arts & Social Sciences. A draft ordinance, prepared by a committee led by Prof. Mohammad Tanzimuddin Khan—was released on September 24, seeking feedback from teachers, students, and other stakeholders. More than 6,000 responses poured in, sparking heated debate and divisions. On November 18, the Education Ministry said it had decided in principle to establish DCU, claiming the move would ensure quality education, timely exams, fast results, and improved administration. Born into Session Jams  Despite completing admissions for the 2024–25 academic year and announcing that classes would begin on November 23, no classes commenced. Most universities have already been in session for months, and DU has finished 2 units admission tests for the next academic year.Consequently, DCU’s first batch has suffered what amounts to a one-year session delay, even without attending a single class.  On November 30, students blocked the Shahbagh intersection demanding immediate commencement of classes after another postponed start date passed. Earlier, the ministry had extended the admission deadline and rescheduled classes to November 30, but no progress followed. Academic Schools and Growing Controversy The draft ordinance divides the colleges into four academic schools: School of Arts & Humanities at Govt. Bangla College(Journalism, Economics, Development Studies, Film Studies, International Politics) School of Science at Dhaka College, Eden Mohila College, Badrunnesa College(Biochemistry, Data Science, Zoology, Physics, Psychology, etc.) School of Business Studies at Titumir College(Accounting, HRM, Marketing, Banking & Insurance, Hospitality) School of Law & Justice at Kabi Nazrul College and Shaheed Suhrawardy College A segment of students reject the hybrid, multi-campus schooling system, fearing it will diminish their college identity and autonomy. Dhaka College alumni have demanded full cancellation of the draft to preserve institutional independence. Bangladesh’s banking sector sees surge in small deposits as ultra-rich exit post-changeover The ordinance proposes a hybrid teaching model, with 35–40% instruction online but all exams in person. University activities would run from 1pm to 7pm on existing college campuses. Students’ concerns over autonomy Female students from Eden Mohila College and Begum Badrunnesa College argue that the proposed schooling threatens the purpose of women-only institutions. On December 2, Eden students held a press conference demanding the college remain exclusively for women. The next day, students blocked roads and marched toward Dhaka College, joined by faculty members. Even now, a segment of students has yet to applaud the initiative to convert the seven colleges into a university. Rudro Sheikh, a fourth-year student of the Department of Philosophy at Dhaka College, told UNB, “The proposal is not fully aligned with reality. Without proper infrastructure, research facilities, and permanent faculty, university status adds value in name only, not in education quality. The priority should be maintaining stability and transparency in existing colleges rather than expanding a name without ensuring quality.” Teachers’ Alarm Over Career Security Teachers remain deeply concerned. Under the draft, BCS General Education Cadre members are not considered DCU faculty and cannot conduct first-year classes or exams, raising fears that around 1,500 teaching posts, including 1,100 permanent—may lose status or be abolished. Faculty members argue that this threatens their promotions and fundamental rights. Tensions escalated on October 14 when teachers and students clashed at Dhaka College. On December 2, the “Seven Colleges' Identity Protection Committee” demanded cancellation of the hybrid system and insisted on permanent inclusion of BCS cadre members in all academic and administrative roles. They warned of possible indefinite strikes if the ordinance proceeds. HSC Students Enter the Debate Five of the seven colleges— Dhaka College, Shaheed Suhrawardy, Badrunnesa, Kabi Nazrul, and Bangla College—run higher secondary programs. Students from these programs fear DCU will eventually eliminate HSC sections, despite the draft ordinance stating they would remain. They also fear that the proposed DCU structure threatens college autonomy. On December 1, Dhaka College HSC students blocked Science Lab and New Market intersections demanding the ordinance be withdrawn and college autonomy preserved. Ordinance Deadline Looms On October 15, the ministry called the ordinance’s finalization “time-sensitive” and urged responsible public engagement. But student frustration has intensified. On December 3, students blocked roads in front of Dhaka College and issued an ultimatum: the ordinance must be released by December 6. Failing that, they vowed to begin a continuous sit-in in front of the Education Building from December 7. Interim administrator Prof. A K M Elias said, “The Ministry of Education is closely monitoring the situation, and we hope the issues will be resolved very soon.” Dhaka to get state-of-the-art special needs school UGC member Prof. Tanzim Uddin Khan, said to UNB, “We do not have the authority to make comments regarding the seven colleges. According to our terms of conditions, we have completed the responsibilities assigned to us.” He added that they no longer have any role in this matter; it is now entirely under the jurisdiction of the Ministry of Education. For now, Dhaka Central University remains suspended between aspiration and deadlock, a project weighed down by mistrust, administrative vacuum, and unresolved questions of identity, autonomy, and inclusion.

Shahjalal University of Science and Technology (SUST) has launched a bus tracking system on Thursday to make student transportation easier. The ‘SUST Bus Tracking System’ app was officially inaugurated by Vice-Chancellor Prof. Dr. A M Sarwaruddin Chowdhury at 11 am on a trial basis. The app was developed by Saifur Rahman and his team from the Department of Computer Science and Engineering (2020-21 session) of the university. A total of 251 candidates collected nomination papers in three days for the Shahjalal University of Science and Technology Central Students’ Union (SUCSU) and hall union elections, the election commission said on Thursday. Professor Dr. Md. Nazrul Islam, spokesperson for the election commission, said the distribution of nomination papers concluded today. On the first day, December 2, 26 papers were collected for the central union and 20 for the hall unions. On December 3, 58 papers were taken for the central union and 45 for hall unions. On the final day, December 4, 61 candidates collected papers for the central union and 41 for hall unions. In total, 145 papers were distributed for the central union and 106 for the hall unions. Of these, 72 were male and 34 were female candidates. Participation of female candidates was also seen in the central union election, with 15 women collecting nomination papers. Professor Dr. Nazrul Islam said, “The nomination process was completed peacefully and orderly. The number of candidates this year is encouraging, and female participation is also noteworthy.” After nearly 28 years, elections will be held for 23 central union posts and nine hall union posts. The voting is scheduled for January 20.

Dr Zubaida Rahman, wife of BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman, is on her way to Dhaka to accompany her critically ill mother-in-law BNP Chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia, during her flight to the UK in a special air ambulance arranged by the Emir of Qatar for advanced treatment. BNP Media Cell member Atiqur Rahman Rumon said Zubaida boarded a Biman Bangladesh Airlines flight from London Heathrow at around 6.03 pm (London time). “The flight is expected to land in Dhaka around 9:30am tomorrow (Friday),” he told UNB. Her daughter, Barrister Zaima Rahman, saw her off at the airport. Once she arrives in Dhaka, Zubaida will join Khaleda Zia on the Qatar royal air ambulance for the journey to the United Kingdom. Rumon said Dr Zubaida, who is also a member of the medical board overseeing Khaleda’s treatment, has been monitoring her condition closely through virtual consultations from London. Earlier in the day, Mahdi Amin, an adviser to Tarique Rahman, said in a Facebook post that Khaleda has shown “some improvement” and will be admitted to a hospital in London. BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir said all preparations have been completed to fly Khaleda to the UK early Friday morning on the Qatar royal air ambulance, which is equipped with advanced medical facilities, including an on-board operation theatre. Khaleda Zia to be flown to UK for advanced treatment: Fakhrul “A team of doctors will travel with Madam,” he added. Khaleda Zia has been undergoing treatment at Evercare Hospital since 23 November.  She was moved to the Critical Care Unit on 27 November with multiple complications related to her liver, kidneys and heart, and remains under close observation. BNP sources said Tarique Rahman and Dr Zubaida have already arranged treatment for her at London Bridge Hospital. This will be Khaleda Zia’s second medical evacuation on a Qatar royal air ambulance. On 8 January she travelled to London for treatment and returned to Dhaka on 6 May. Dr Zubaida accompanied her then, ending her 17-year stay in London.  She returned to London on 5 June after a month-long stay in Dhaka, and is now flying back again mainly to accompany the BNP chief abroad. Meanwhile, BNP sources said Khaleda’s departure for London may be delayed until late Friday morning (5 December 2025), as the Qatar royal air ambulance is likely to arrive in Dhaka later than planned due to technical issues. Dr Zubaida is also scheduled to reach Dhaka around 9:30am on Friday to travel with her. At a press conference at the BNP Chairperson’s Gulshan office on Thursday afternoon, Mirza Fakhrul said the air ambulance was expected late at night. Air ambulance delay may slightly push back Khaleda Zia’s departure He later told UNB that “some technical problems” have emerged which may delay its arrival. Tarique Rahman, Dr Zubaida and their daughter Zaima Rahman have been living in London since 2008. Dr Zubaida, a former government doctor, topped the national merit list in her MBBS examinations and secured first place in the BCS (Health) cadre in 1995. She was later dismissed from government service under the Awami League government after travelling to London on study leave in 2008.  She completed her postgraduate degree in medicine at Imperial College London.  

Ireland, Spain and the Netherlands have announced they will not take part in next year’s Eurovision Song Contest after Israel was allowed to compete. The three countries were among those urging organisers to bar Israel over the rising humanitarian toll in Gaza and concerns about unfair voting practices. Despite the calls, contest members chose not to vote on Israel’s participation. Instead, they approved new rules aimed at protecting the integrity of the event. Dutch broadcaster Avrotros said taking part “under the current circumstances” goes against its core public values. Spain’s broadcaster RTVE said earlier that it would withdraw if Israel remained in the competition. It confirmed Spain will not join Eurovision 2026 and will not air the final or the semi-finals. RTVE also said its request for a secret ballot on Israel’s participation was rejected. The broadcaster said the refusal showed political pressure around the contest and increased its distrust in the organisers. US pop star Miley Cyrus has confirmed that she is engaged to her long-time partner, musician Maxx Morando. The 33-year-old singer appeared with a gold and diamond ring on her engagement finger at the Los Angeles premiere of Avatar: Fire and Ash on Monday. Speaking to Good Morning America on Wednesday, Cyrus said Morando proposed during a recent trip to Asia. She said she was “very surprised” because she usually likes to stay in control of situations. Cyrus, known for hits like Flowers and Party in the U.S.A., was previously married to Australian actor Liam Hemsworth in 2018. They divorced the following year after a decade-long on-and-off relationship. She told British Vogue last year that she met Morando, now 27, after being set up on a blind date. He plays drums for the Los Angeles band Liily, which performed on NBC’s Miley’s New Year’s Eve Party in 2022. Showing her ring during the interview, Cyrus said Morando “did good” with his choice. She added that their four-year relationship has helped her grow and that she values having someone who always encourages her. Cyrus’s new song Dream as One appears in the latest Avatar film. Bangladesh has successfully vaccinated over 42.5 million children in the Typhoid Conjugate Vaccine (TCV) Campaign 2025, achieving more than 97% coverage nationwide, UNICEF notified on Thursday. Rana Flowers, UNICEF Representative in Bangladesh, called the achievement a national breakthrough and said it makes Bangladesh the eighth country in the world to launch this life-saving campaign. “This remarkable success shows the government’s strong commitment to protecting children from preventable illness and families from emotional and financial burdens,” she said. The campaign is crucial as a recent Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics survey found only 39.3% of people have access to safely managed drinking water. Nearly half of water sources and over 80% of household water samples are contaminated with E. coli, putting millions of children at daily risk of typhoid. UNICEF supported the government with planning, vaccine supply, cold chain strengthening, digital tools, and training of frontline health workers. The agency also worked on community engagement through TV, radio, social media, and partnerships with organizations like the Islamic Foundation, reaching over 120 million people. Bangladesh launches nationwide typhoid vaccine campaign, aiming to cover 50 million children Flowers highlighted that the campaign reached all children, including those in remote areas, children with disabilities, underprivileged communities, ethnic minorities, and over 424,000 children in Rohingya camps. She thanked the government, Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Expanded Programme on Immunization, Gavi, WHO, other partners, parents, and the media for their support in making the campaign a success. “Vaccinating children is a promise of health, protection, and hope. This campaign brings Bangladesh closer to a typhoid-free future for every child,” she added.  

A college teacher in Jhenaidah on Wednesday has been temporarily suspended following allegations of sexual harassment and abuse brought by multiple female students. The accused, Nazrul Islam, 49, is a lecturer in the Bangla department of MA Khalek Degree College in Sadar upazila. The college authorities suspended him after receiving written complaints from at least 16 students, confirmed College Principal Md Oliar Rahman. According to the complaints, Nazrul Islam had been harassing several female students for a long time by sending inappropriate messages to their mobile phones and making offensive remarks during in-person encounters. As his behaviour became widely known among students, multiple victims came forward, sparking widespread anger on campus. One of the victims, requesting anonymity, told UNB, “I respected Nazrul Sir as a teacher, but he repeatedly sent adult messages on my phone. If I didn’t reply, he would make inappropriate remarks in person. He has done worse to several students. We want justice.” Principal Oliar Rahman said the college took the matter seriously. “We have suspended him temporarily. As the allegations are grave, we have informed the Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO), who has assured us of appropriate action,” he said. Nazrul Islam, however, denied the allegations, claiming his mobile phone was “hacked,” which allegedly caused the messages to be sent. When asked how a phone could remain hacked for four to five months, he abruptly ended the call. Sadar UNO Hosne Ara said the college authorities had verbally informed her. “The allegations are serious. We have asked the college to submit the written complaints to the UNO office. Once received, we will take necessary legal steps. The district Secondary and Higher Education Office will also be notified.”

Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami Secretary General and former MP Mia Golam Parwar on Wednesday expressed deep concern and strongly condemned an armed attack on a campaign rally of the party’s Narsingdi-2 (Palash) candidate Maulana Amzad Hossain. In a statement, Parwar said a group of around 50-60 armed assailants, described as “BNP-labelled miscreants”, launched a pre-planned attack on a peaceful gathering held at Shekherchar bus stand in Meherpara union on December 3. The attackers, equipped with local weapons and firearms, dispersed the rally and left at least 30 Jamaat activists injured, including the district Jamaat secretary and nominated candidate Maulana Amzad. Several of the injured were admitted to Narsingdi District Hospital in critical condition. Three Jamaat workers are still missing, which Parwar said has heightened concern among party members. Terming the incident a serious violation of democratic norms and electoral ethics, Parwar said such acts of violence are aimed at destabilizing the election environment. He urged Jamaat activists across the country to remain patient, maintain organizational unity and continue advocating for democratic rights peacefully. The Jamaat leader called on law enforcement agencies to arrest those involved, ensure exemplary punishment, and take immediate steps to rescue the three missing workers. He also urged authorities to guarantee equal security and opportunities for all candidates to maintain a fair and safe electoral atmosphere.

A case was filed Thursday over a violent attack on two Customs officials in Chattogram, who were allegedly targeted by criminals for preventing the illegal release of imported goods, according to the National Board of Revenue (NBR). The incident occurred around 10:20am in the CDA Residential Area under Double Mooring Police Station, when three unidentified assailants on a motorcycle intercepted a vehicle carrying Md Asaduzzaman Khan, Revenue Officer of the AIR section at Chattogram Customs House, and Assistant Revenue Officer Md Badrul Arefin Bhuiyan. Asaduzzaman Khan lodged the case at Double Mooring Police Station. The attackers reportedly attempted to kill them, striking the car with a machete and kicking in the left-side window while shouting “shoot, shoot.” The officials escaped unharmed by quickly driving toward their office. Authorities believe the attack is linked to several recent enforcement drives by Chattogram Customs House aimed at preventing revenue evasion. Recent seizures include illegally imported poppy seeds and banned sodium cyclamate worth nearly Tk 10 crore, and a consignment of restricted cigarettes valued at around Tk 30 crore back in May. Customs officials also intercepted multiple consignments of cosmetics brought through false declarations, prompting threats from fraud syndicates. On October 5, an anonymous caller threatened one of the two attacked officials over WhatsApp, following the seizure of misdeclared cosmetics, leading to a general diary being filed at Bandar Police Station the next day. The NBR strongly condemned the assault, describing it as a heinous act against officers performing their lawful duties to curb smuggling, preventing tax evasion, and preventing imports through false declarations. It reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring the safety of honest and dedicated officials and urged law enforcement agencies to bring the perpetrators to justice without delay.

Several UK universities have suspended or restricted applications from Bangladesh and Pakistan, citing concerns over visa abuses and new Home Office rules. At least nine institutions have altered their recruitment policies, following a rise in international student asylum claims that prompted warnings from Border Security Minister Dame Angela Eagle about misuse of the student visa system as a backdoor to UK residency, reports Financial Times. The University of Chester, for example, has halted recruitment from Pakistan until autumn 2026 due to “a recent and unexpected rise in visa refusals.” The University of Wolverhampton is not accepting undergraduate applications from Bangladesh and Pakistan, while the University of East London has suspended recruitment from Pakistan. Sunderland and Coventry universities have also paused applications from both countries. Sunderland defended its approach, stating it is necessary to maintain the integrity of the student visa system. The recruitment restrictions come after the Home Office tightened Basic Compliance Assessment (BCA) thresholds in September 2025. Universities must now keep visa refusal rates below 5 percent, down from 10 percent previously. Bangladesh and Pakistan had average refusal rates of 18 and 22 percent, respectively, in the year to September 2025. Combined, these two countries accounted for nearly half of the 23,036 student visa rejections. Other universities affected include Hertfordshire, Glasgow Caledonian, Oxford Brookes, BPP University, and London Metropolitan University, all citing visa processing delays, compliance pressures, or risk mitigation as reasons for suspending recruitment. Many lower-fee universities, heavily reliant on international students, face a dilemma as even a few non-compliant cases could jeopardize their sponsor licences. Education agents and advocates have criticized the move for harming genuine students. Maryem Abbas, founder of Edvance Advisors, said the suspensions leave legitimate applicants stranded and highlight the profit-driven nature of some overseas recruitment agencies. Universities UK International has urged institutions to diversify intakes, improve application scrutiny, and adjust deposit policies to comply with the stricter rules. The Home Office emphasized that the reforms aim to ensure only genuine students enter the UK while holding education providers accountable. The crackdown is part of a broader effort to curb net migration, which is at a four-year low, while preserving the credibility of the UK’s student visa system.

The Bangladesh Oil, Gas and Mineral Corporation (Petrobangla) and the Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on Thursday to jointly accelerate initiatives in education, research, and training. The signing ceremony took place at the Petrobangla Board Room at Karwan Bazar in the capital. This five-year agreement, which is automatically renewable for another five years, is expected to significantly strengthen the collaboration and foster a deeper, long-term partnership between the industry leader and the top-tier engineering university The core aims of the MoU are- Enhancing information exchange between Petrobangla and BUET faculty and students to accelerate research activities. BUET will be granted access to relevant information for research, excluding confidential data pertinent to national security. Facilitating the mutual exchange of knowledge, technology, and experience Supporting the professional skill development of personnel and promoting knowledge enhancement through meetings, seminars, and workshops. Allowing practical application of academic research through access to industry laboratories, software, and opportunities to visit operational sites, including drilling sites, seismic survey operations, process plants, and mines. The collaboration is also expected to use real-world industrial experience to strengthen BUET's academic curriculum, playing a significant role in meeting future industry needs. The signing ceremony was graced by Professor Abu Borhan Mohammad Badruzzaman, the Vice-Chancellor of BUET, and Md. Rezanur Rahman, the Chairman of Petrobangla. The MoU was signed by Md. Amzad Hossain, Secretary (Senior General Manager) on behalf of Petrobangla, and Professor Dr. Mohammad Shariful Islam, Director of the Research and Innovation Centre for Science and Engineering (RISE), on behalf of BUET. Directors and senior officials of Petrobangla, as well as BUET's Deputy Director of RISE, were also in attendance.

The inauguration, including foundation-laying, of 11 sports facilities across 10 districts under the National Sports Council was completed virtually on Thursday by Youth and Sports Adviser Asif Mahmud Sajeeb Bhuiyan. The virtual events were conducted from the Secretariat. Four facilities were inaugurated, including three mini stadiums and a swimming pool, at an estimated cost of Tk 115 crore. Foundation stones were laid for six new mini stadiums at an estimated cost of Tk 131 crore, and implementation work for a mini stadium costing Tk 12.7 crore was also launched during the event. The facilities inaugurated include Ghaznavi Stadium and Bhola District Swimming Pool in Bhola, Char Fashion Upazila Mini Stadium in Bhola, and Juri Upazila Mini Stadium in Moulvibazar. Foundation stones were laid for Narail Bir Shrestha Noor Mohammad Stadium and Table Tennis Building, as well as mini stadiums in Pirganj (Rangpur), Charbhadrasan (Faridpur), Daulatpur (Manikganj), Indurkani (Pirojpur), and Bagatipara (Natore). Implementation work also began for Shaheed Md. Asif Hasan Mini Stadium in Debhata Upazila, Satkhira. Speaking on the occasion, the Youth and Sports Adviser said, “By creating mini stadiums at the upazila level, we are decentralizing sports and providing hubs for sports and cultural activities. These stadiums are being built to fairly modern standards.” Highlighting further initiatives, he added, “We are planning an international standard sports institute and a regional branch of BKSP in Rangamati, with feasibility studies underway.” Regarding gender equality in sports, Asif Mahmud said authorities have instructed federations to reduce salary disparities between men and women. The Bangladesh Cricket Board has equalized allowances and tour fees for women cricketers and increased their salaries by 35 percent. “We have also advised the BFF to at least double the salaries of women footballers, with financial assistance from our side,” he added.

The OCs (officers-in-charge) of 50 police stations under Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) have been transferred and given new postings, in the latest round of reshuffles. Bangladesh’s exported goods worth US $3.89 billion in November 2025, marking a 1.77 percent increase compared to the previous month. During the first five months of the FY 2025–26 (July–November), total exports stood at $20.03 billion, showing a 0.62 percent growth over the same period of the previous fiscal year, which recorded $19.9 billion. While exports in November 2025 registered a 5.54 percent year-on-year decline compared to November 2024, the overall monthly upward trend signals sustained resilience and adaptability within Bangladesh’s export sectors. The apparel sector remains the backbone of export performance, contributing $3.14 billion in November 2025. Both knitwear and woven garments continued to drive earnings, supported by strong contributions from leather and leather goods, agricultural products, jute and jute goods, home textiles, pharmaceuticals, ships, shrimp, and light engineering products. These diverse sectors collectively strengthened the country’s export portfolio. Despite year-on-year fluctuations, the continued month-on-month growth and strong performance across major sectors underscore the resilience, competitiveness, and positive outlook for Bangladesh’s export industries in the global market.

A farmer was shot dead and two others injured in Daulatpur upazila of Kushtia on Thursday evening. The victim, Rofiqul Islam Rofi, 40, son of Mot Ali Molla, was killed around 6:30 pm in Pochavita village, Pirpur Union. Quoting locals, police said that after finishing his work, Rofiqul was having tea near a tea stall by the house of local member Soket. Suddenly, three attackers riding an Apache RTR motorcycle arrived and shot Rofiqul, killing him on the spot. When locals tried to chase the attackers, they fired a few rounds and then fled, injuring Rabzel and Yusuf. Both injured were sent to Kushtia General Hospital. Body of unidentified man with burnt face recovered in Kushtia Rofiqul was also a local BNP activist, but he reportedly had no personal disputes. Solaiman Sheikh, officer-in-charge of Daulatpur Police Station, said police arrived after receiving information. “We could not identify the attackers immediately. The investigation is ongoing. The culprits will be brought to justice soon,” he added.  

Bangladesh Jatiya Party Chairman Andaleeve Rahman Partho has opined that “politics can be very cruel,” while expressing concern over the silence of Awami League leaders regarding the illness of BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia. In a post on his verified Facebook page on Thursday, Barrister Andaleeve Rahman wrote that Begum Khaleda Zia is critically ill and that people from all religions, professions, and walks of life across Bangladesh are worried, saddened, and praying for her recovery. “Even Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has prayed for the recovery of Begum Khaleda Zia. However, it is surprising that I have not heard a single word from any of the top leaders of the Awami League in this regard. Politics is sometimes very cruel,” he added. Khaleda Zia has been receiving treatment at Evercare Hospital since November 23 after being admitted with multiple health complications. As her condition worsened, she was moved to the Critical Care Unit on 27 November, where she is still under close observation. Doctors said Khaleda Zia is receiving intensive care for several complications related to her liver, kidneys and heart. She may be flown to the United Kingdom early Friday for advanced treatment by a royal air ambulance provided by the Emir of Qatar, said party Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Thursday.

BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia’s departure for London for advanced medical treatment is now expected to be delayed until late Friday morning (December 05, 2025), as the special air ambulance provided by the Emir of Qatar may arrive in Dhaka later than initially scheduled due to technical issues, according to party sources. Besides, Dr Zubaida Rahman, wife of BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman, is scheduled to reach Dhaka around 9:30am Friday to accompany her critically ill mother-in-law during the flight to the UK in the special aircraft. At a press conference at the party chairperson’s Gulshan office on Thursday afternoon (December 04), BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir said the air ambulance was expected to arrive late at night. BNP Media Cell member Atiqur Rahman Rumon said Dr Zubaida Rahman is scheduled to fly from London around 6pm local time by a Biman Bangladesh Airlines flight. “The flight is expected to land in Dhaka around 9:30am Bangladesh time,” he said. Once in Dhaka, Rumon said Zubaida will travel back to London in the Qatar air ambulance with the BNP Chairperson. Zubaida, who is also a member of the medical board formed for Khaleda’s treatment, has been monitoring her condition continuously through virtual consultations. Khaleda Zia, the 80-year-old three-time former prime minister, has been undergoing treatment at Evercare Hospital since 23 November after being admitted with multiple health complications. As her condition deteriorated, she was shifted to the Critical Care Unit on 27 November, where she remains under close observation. Doctors said Khaleda Zia is receiving intensive care for several complications related to her liver, kidneys and heart. BNP sources said Tarique and Zubaida have completed all arrangements for Khaleda’s treatment at London Bridge Hospital in the UK. Mirza Fakhrul said all necessary procedures for Khaleda’s travel have already been completed. “You may already know who will accompany her. A team of doctors will travel with Madam.” The BNP leader said the royal air ambulance is equipped with modern medical facilities. “It has everything available, even an operation theatre.” Earlier in the day, Khaleda’s personal physician and BNP Standing Committee Member AZM Zahid Hossain said she will be flown to London for advanced medical treatment. The decision was made unanimously by a medical board including local and foreign specialists, he told reporters at a briefing in front of Evercare Hospital in Dhaka. We have selected a hospital in London for her treatment and, InshAllah, we will take her there,” he said. We hope she will recover and return to us.” On 8 January, Khaleda Zia travelled to London in a special air ambulance sent by the Amir of Qatar for advanced medical treatment and returned home on 6 May in the same aircraft. The government has declared Khaleda Zia a ‘Very Very Important Person’ and deployed members of the Special Security Force to ensure her safety. Speakers at a dialogue in Dhaka have highlighted the importance of ensuring sustained, inclusive and accountable approaches to security sector reform in Bangladesh. They reaffirmed that effective police reform, democratic oversight, constructive media engagement and the integration of gender and human rights are essential pillars for building a transparent, accountable and people-centered security sector. Bangladesh Institute of Peace and Security Studies (BIPSS), in strategic partnership with the Geneva Centre for Security Sector Governance (DCAF), hosted the high-level conference recently as part of a dialogue on strengthening democratic security governance. BIPSS President Maj Gen ANM Muniruzzaman (retd) has described Bangladesh as navigating a crucial period of institutional evolution and reform, which requires a fundamental re-evaluation of key governance pillars. He emphasised that this transition necessitates a fundamental re-evaluation of all key governance pillars and the security sector, given its expansive mandate, requires urgent attention to enhance its effectiveness, ensure professional standards and rebuild public trust. The BIPSS President made the remarks while addressing a conference titled ‘Security Sector Reform (SSR): Challenges, Opportunities, and Pathways Forward’ held recently. The BIPSS and DCAF expressed commitment to continuing dialogue and cooperation to advance meaningful security sector governance reforms in Bangladesh. The conference brought together retired senior police and military officers, diplomats, academics, journalists, civil society representatives, political leaders, private security professionals and young researchers to critically assess the future of policing and security governance in Bangladesh, said the BIPPS on Thursday. The session one examined the Police Reform Commission’s recommendations across several thematic pillars, including human rights and accountability, legal and operational modernization, anti-corruption measures, human resources and welfare, gender equity, and the use of technology to rebuild public trust. Participants recognized the technical strength of these proposals but stressed that implementation remains the greatest challenge. Bangladesh, other CSC members discuss regional security, counterterrorism Highlighting the broader strategic gaps in the reform process, the President of BIPSS said there is a critical need to establish a unified and comprehensive strategic security framework, such as a National Security Policy (NSP) and a central coordination mechanism (NSC), to provide consistent strategic direction and improve inter-agency alignment. This was followed by the second session on Democratic Control, Oversight, and Accountability, moderated by DCAF. The discussion emphasised strengthening governance, oversight, and professional accountability across the security sector by utilizing institutional mechanisms such as legislative oversight, judicial review and independent commissions. Participants emphasised the importance of parliamentary oversight, judicial review, independent commissions, and civil society engagement in preventing abuse of power and ensuring responsible security governance. The discussion also highlighted the relevance of gender-sensitive oversight and alignment with constitutional and legal safeguards. The second day of the event centered on the Security Sector, Gender, and the Role of Media. The session on Security Sector and Media Relations, moderated by Raheed Ejaz, Diplomatic Correspondent, Prothom Alo, examined ways to enhance transparency and communication between the security sector and the media. Discussions addressed the media’s role in shaping public perception, supporting accountability, and acting as a democratic watchdog, while also emphasizing the need for responsible reporting and access to verified information to improve public trust. The final session on Security Sector, Gender, and Human Rights, moderated by Dr Marufa Akhter, Associate Professor and Chairman, Department of Global Studies and Governance, Independent University of Bangladesh (IUB), focused on integrating gender perspectives into security operations, upholding human rights standards, and addressing gender-based violence within the security context. Participants stressed the importance of institutional gender mainstreaming, survivor-centered approaches, and accountability mechanisms to ensure inclusive and rights-based security services. The discussion also underscored the need for gender-responsive training, leadership representation and protection of vulnerable populations. Shafqat Munir, Senior Fellow at BIPSS, highlighted the need for revamping the entire national security architecture in Bangladesh and the urgent need to create a national security task force once a new government takes over. The conference was attended by senior national officials, representive or paramilitary forces, Bangladesh police, private security industry, former ambassadors, members of media and civil society, academics among others.  

Sri Lankan Prime Minister Dr Harini Amarasuriya on Thursday phoned Chief Adviser Prof Muhammad Yunus and thanked him ‘for the support and expressions of solidarity’ following the devastating cyclone and floods that have killed hundreds and ravaged large parts of Sri Lanka over the past week. They had the telephone conversation at 6:45 pm (BST), said Chief Adviser’s Deputy Press Secretary Abul Kalam Azad Majumder. Prof Yunus conveyed his condolences and deep sympathy for the victims. He reaffirmed Bangladesh’s commitment to dispatch additional emergency aid and disaster-response experts to help Sri Lanka cope with the crisis. “We will be happy to do whatever is needed,” Prof Yunus said. Prime Minister Amarasuriya, who met the Chief Adviser on the sidelines of the BIMSTEC meeting in Bangkok earlier this year, said her government was currently assessing the damage caused by the heavy rains and widespread flooding. During the phone call, the Chief Adviser invited the Sri Lankan Prime Minister to visit Bangladesh in the coming months, saying Dhaka hoped to learn from Colombo’s political experience. Senior Secretary and SDGs Affairs Principal Coordinator Lamiya Morshed and Foreign Ministry's concerned Director General were present during the conversation.

The Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) has imposed a ban on all forms of public gatherings in key areas of the capital, including the Bangladesh Secretariat and Jamuna, the official residence of the Chief Adviser, effective from Saturday. The restriction has been enforced under the Section 29 of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police Ordinance, 1976, citing the need to maintain public order and safety of the Chief Adviser, said a public notice issued by DMP Commissioner Sheikh Md Sazzat Ali. According to the notice, all types of meetings, assemblies, processions, human chains, sit-ins, and similar activities are strictly prohibited in and around the Bangladesh Secretariat and Jamuna. The areas under the restriction included Hotel InterContinental Crossing, Kakrail Mosque Crossing, Officers Club Crossing, and Mintu Road Crossing. The order will remain valid until further notice. The DMP commissioner urged people to cooperate to help maintain peace and security in the designated areas.

Greater collaboration between Bangladesh and China in the medical sector can significantly strengthen Bangladesh’s healthcare capacity, said Cosmos Health Founder and CEO Nahar Khan. She also shared her own experience as a patient in Beijing, where she received treatment and developed a strong interest in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). “I am a firm believer in TCM, especially acupuncture. Cosmos Health is now working to establish a TCM training centre and treatment facility in Bangladesh,” she said. She noted that Bangladeshi culture already has a natural affinity for traditional medicine, and that China can play a transformative role in modernising this field. Bangladesh will also need to train over 400,000 healthcare professionals to meet WHO recommended doctor–patient and nurse–patient ratios, she noted, adding that Chinese institutions can significantly contribute to capacity building, knowledge transfer, and skills development. Expressing optimism, she said she hopes to contribute “a small and humble part” to the development of the healthcare and education sectors. Li Shaopeng, Cultural Counsellor at the Embassy of the People’s Republic of China in Bangladesh, attended the event as chief guest. Medical professionals, educationists, respected professors, leaders of the Bangladesh China Postgraduate Doctors Alumni Association and the Chinese Medical Alumni Association of Bangladesh, partners, media representatives, and other guests were also present. The symposium, a special initiative of the Chinese Embassy, aims to strengthen medical and educational exchange between the two friendly nations. The 2025 China–Bangladesh Symposium on Healthcare and Education comprised both a seminar and a conference, and featured four forums focusing on education, medical challenges, and opportunities for bilateral collaboration.

The Council of Advisers on Thursday (December 04) approved the draft Police Commission Ordinance-2025, aiming to make the police more people-friendly one. Once the ordinance is promulgated, there will be a five-member commission under it, headed by a retired Supreme Court judge and the commission will make recommendations to the government on issues such as investigating and resolving citizen complaints, resolving grievances of police members. Chief Adviser Prof Muhammad Yunus chaired the meeting the Chief Adviser’s Office. Environment, Forest and Climate Change Adviser Syeda Rizwana Hasan briefed reporters at the Foreign Service Academy after the meeting. Responding to a question, she said the names of the commission members will come through a selection committee and the government will make appointments based on that. Regarding the purpose of the formation of the commission, the Adviser said the police will be made people-friendly and people-oriented and this commission will work in collaboration with the government. Besides, the commission will also identify where the police need to be modernized and what kind of training is needed to make the police human rights sensitive. Russian President Vladimir Putin landed in India Thursday on a state visit aimed at bolstering bilateral and economic ties between the two countries. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi received the Russian leader at an airport in New Delhi, giving a bearhug and a tight handshake with the gusto of an old friend. Modi will host Putin for a private dinner tonight at his decked-up official residence. On Friday, the two leaders will hold talks as part of the 23rd India-Russia Summit and discuss deepening economic cooperation, mainly in defense, energy and the mobility of skilled labor. Putin’s visit comes at a sensitive time in global politics when there is a renewed push by the U.S. on a peace deal to bring the Russia-Ukraine war to an end. The visit will test New Delhi’s efforts to balance relations with Moscow and Washington as the nearly four-year war in Ukraine grinds on. Putin last visited India in 2021. Modi was in Moscow last year, and the two leaders briefly met in September in China during a Shanghai Cooperation Organization summit.  

Electricity supply will remain suspended in several parts of Sylhet city on Saturday due to urgent repair, maintenance and trimming work of tree branches. Engineer Mohammad Arafat of Sales and Distribution Division–1 and Engineer Abdur Razzak of Division–2 came up with the notice on Thursday. According to the authorities, power will remain off from 8am to 5pm in areas under the 11 kV feeders of the 33/11 kV Amberkhana Substation. Dr Zubaida Rahman, wife of BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman, is coming to Dhaka to accompany her critically ill mother-in-law Begum Khaleda during her flight to the UK in a special air ambulance arranged by the Amir of Qatar for advanced treatment. BNP Media Cell member Atiqur Rahman Rumon said Zubaida is scheduled to fly from London at around 6pm (London time) by a Biman Bangladesh Airlines flight. “The flight is expected to land in Dhaka around 9:30am Bangladesh time,” he said. Once in Dhaka, Rumon said, Zubaida will travel back to London in a Qatar air ambulance with the BNP Chairperson. Multiple BNP sources also confirmed that Dr Zubaida is returning home to accompany Khaleda. Earlier in the day, Mahdi Amin, an adviser to Tarique Rahman, said in a post on his verified Facebook account that Khaleda has shown some improvement and she will be admitted to a hospital in London. “Dr Zubaida Rahman is at the centre of this treatment process and is coordinating everything from London. She will leave for Bangladesh today and will try to reach Dhaka early tomorrow (Friday) morning so she can accompany the national leader on the highly sophisticated Qatar royal air ambulance to London,” he said. The former prime minister has been receiving treatment at Evercare Hospital since 23 November after being admitted with multiple health complications. As her condition worsened, she was shifted to the Critical Care Unit on 27 November, where she remains under close observation. Doctors said Khaleda Zia is receiving intensive care for several complications related to her liver, kidneys and heart. BNP sources said Tarique and Zubaida have completed all arrangements for Khaleda’s treatment at London Bridge Hospital in the UK. Meanwhile, BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir said Khaleda may be flown to the United Kingdom early Friday for advanced treatment by a royal air ambulance provided by the Amir of Qatar. He said all necessary procedures for Khaleda’s travel have already been completed. “You may already know who will accompany her. The BNP leader said the royal air ambulance is equipped with very modern facilities. “It has everything available, even an operation theatre.” On 8 January, Khaleda Zia travelled to London in a special air ambulance sent by the Amir of Qatar for advanced medical treatment and returned home on 6 May in the same aircraft. Dr Zubaida accompanied Khaleda during her return home at that time, ending her 17 years of stay in London. Zubaida had stayed in Dhaka for a month before returning to London on 5 June. This time, she is arriving again mainly to accompany the former Prime Minister abroad for better medical care. Tarique Rahman, Dr Zubaida and their daughter Zaima Rahman have been living in London since 2008. Zubaida passed the MBBS examination with top merit and started her career as a government doctor after qualifying in the BCS examination in 1995. She secured first place in the Bangladesh Civil Service (BCS-Health) examination. Sheikh Hasina’s government dismissed her from service after she went to London on study leave in 2008. Gas supply to the national grid has begun from Well No. 5 of the Habiganj gas field following completion of its workover operations. Petrobangla Chairman Reza Noor Rahman inaugurated the supply to the grid on Wednesday afternoon. The well, located in the Raghu­nandan area of Habiganj, was drilled in 1988. It is currently supplying 14 million cubic feet of gas per day to the national grid. After the workover, production is expected to rise to 26 million cubic feet per day. Bangladesh Gas Fields Company Ltd. undertook the workover due to complications in the well, including water intrusion. The operation began on October 24 and was completed on November 27, at a cost of Tk 75 crore.

Luciano Spalletti returns to Napoli on Sunday for the first time since guiding the club to its first Serie A title in more than three decades — an occasion he admits will be highly emotional. A special operation by the National Board of Revenue (NBR) has revealed evidence of almost Tk 9 crore in potential revenue evasion by United Tobacco Industries Ltd, a cigarette manufacturer based in Ishwardi. The drive was carried out by a team from the VAT Intelligence and Investigation Directorate following information obtained from confidential sources, according to a NBR press release. Although the company possessed a valid VAT registration, investigators found that it had long been concealing its formal production activities while secretly manufacturing and marketing cigarettes—thereby evading a substantial amount of revenue. During the raid, the VAT intelligence team seized 634,590 sticks of cigarettes bearing counterfeit banderols, with a market value of more than Tk 38 lakh. Against these products, the government was deprived of approximately Tk 29 lakh in revenue, officials said. Investigators also recovered 1,029,000 pieces of unused counterfeit banderols/stamps, which—had they been used—could have facilitated additional revenue evasion amounting to over Tk 8.5 crore, according to NBR estimates. Although the company had legally collected 322,500 pieces of authentic banderols, it reportedly chose not to use them. Instead, it continued producing and selling cigarettes using counterfeit banderols to avoid paying due taxes. All seized cigarettes and materials have been taken into custody following legal procedures, and formal action against the company is already under way. Officials said a full investigation report will be submitted soon based on documents recovered during the raid. The relevant VAT Commissionerate has also been instructed to intensify monitoring of the company’s production and sales activities.

A Pakistani national, who had been in prison  since September 29, 1999 in a narcotics case, was released from Kashimpur central jail in Gazipur on Thursday. The Pakistani national, Rois Khan, 55, son of Dean Mohammad of Karachi, was freed from  Kashimpur Central Jail-2 in the afternoon, said Senior Jail Super Md AL Mamun. He was handed over to representatives of Pakistan High Commission in the presence of officials from the Special Branch. He had been serving the jail term in a case filed under the Narcotics Control Act with Ramna Police Station. On July 7, 2005, a court sentenced him to jail. Although his jail term expired on September 24 this year, he remained in custody as a released prisoner awaiting repatriation.  

President Donald Trump’s latest remarks targeting Somali immigrants sparked outrage and anxiety Wednesday in the Minneapolis–St. Paul area, home to the largest Somali community in the United States. Speaking first during a Tuesday Cabinet meeting, Trump said Somalis “contribute nothing” and described them as “garbage,” adding that accepting them would send the country “the wrong way.” He intensified the criticism on Wednesday, telling reporters at an Oval Office event that “Somalians should be out of here” and that they had “destroyed our country.” He also took aim at Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey, calling him a “fool,” and said he would not be “proud to have the largest Somali population” in the U.S. Hamse Warfa, a Minnesota-based Somali-born entrepreneur and head of the education nonprofit World Savvy, rejected the president’s remarks. “I am not garbage. I’m a proud American citizen,” Warfa said, noting that anti-immigrant rhetoric has repeatedly been used for political gain, pointing to past comments Trump made about Haitian migrants ahead of the 2024 election. The Twin Cities region is home to roughly 84,000 people of Somali descent — nearly one-third of the U.S. Somali population. Refugees from the East African nation have been settling in Minnesota since the 1990s, drawn by social support services and the growing diaspora community. Trump’s comments came amid reports that federal authorities are preparing a targeted immigration enforcement action in Minnesota focused on Somalis living illegally in the country, according to a person familiar with the preparations. Most Somalis in the state, however, are U.S. citizens, including many born in America. Some community leaders said they heard anecdotal accounts of detentions by federal agents, though they lacked details. Immigration officials did not immediately respond to requests for comment. Somalis have become an integral part of Minnesota’s civic and political landscape, contributing to local economies, opening businesses and serving in the Legislature and on city councils. U.S. Rep. Ilhan Omar, frequently singled out by Trump — including this week, when he called her “garbage” — represents Minnesota in Congress. The community has also faced scrutiny following the arrests of dozens of people, many of them Somalis, accused of involvement in fraud schemes targeting social service agencies. While Trump has repeatedly claimed Minnesota is “a hub of fraudulent money laundering activity” and suggested money may have flowed to the extremist group al-Shabab, federal authorities have not charged any defendants with terrorism-related offenses, and evidence of such links remains scant. Trump’s latest remarks followed his administration’s decision to halt all asylum rulings after two National Guard soldiers were shot dead in Washington. Although the suspect is of Afghan origin, Trump questioned immigrants from other countries, including Somalia. The administration also paused immigration applications for people from 19 countries — among them Somalia — that had been under previous U.S. travel bans. Minnesota leaders, including Gov. Tim Walz and Mayor Frey, pledged to support Somali residents. “Minneapolis is — and will remain — a city that stands up for our residents,” Frey said in a statement. Several Democratic legislators and Minneapolis City Council members held a news conference Wednesday urging Republican lawmakers to condemn Trump’s comments. “Where are the Republicans now?” asked state Sen. Zaynab Mohamed of Minneapolis, who said she had invited GOP leaders to attend the briefing. Warfa said he hopes the political rhetoric recedes soon, especially as his daughter, a high school senior, prepares for college. “I would rather spend time thinking about her future,” he said, instead of hearing the president describe people like him “as garbage.”  

Two recent killings in Mexico’s Michoacan state — one of a lime growers’ representative and the other of a popular mayor — have laid bare the extent to which drug cartels dominate the region’s economy, politics and daily life. The violence underscores a grim reality long known to residents: organized crime controls large swaths of Michoacan, from its lime orchards and avocado farms to its most vulnerable towns. Even as U.S. President Donald Trump launches strikes on suspected drug-smuggling boats and offers military help to Mexico, President Claudia Sheinbaum faces intensifying pressure to rein in cartels that generations of leaders have failed to subdue. The crisis was brought into sharp focus when a farmer approached Rev. Gilberto Vergara in Tierra Caliente, saying cartel extortion was so severe that harvesting limes no longer made financial sense. Residents feared that speaking up meant death, but staying silent meant going hungry. Vergara drove home through cartel-controlled roads where land mines and drone attacks are constant threats. “They have the state in their hands,” he said. The assassination of Uruapan’s 40-year-old mayor, Carlos Manzo, shocked the country. The outspoken Morena politician, known for confronting criminal groups and firing corrupt officers, was gunned down during Day of the Dead festivities despite a 22-member security team. His killing — allegedly linked to the Jalisco New Generation Cartel — sparked protests across Michoacan and Mexico City, with residents calling him “the Mexican Bukele” for his hard-line stance. Manzo’s death also intensified fear among other local leaders. In La Ruana, activist Guadalupe Mora, whose brother was murdered two years ago, now moves with a 20-person security detail. “It seems we made the government and organized crime uncomfortable,” he said. Cartels have expanded their tactics with drone-dropped explosives, improvised mines, surveillance networks and 3D-printed weapons. Extortion has become as profitable as drug trafficking, crippling industries from agriculture to transport. Even avocados — vital to U.S. consumers — have become more expensive due to cartel control. Sheinbaum’s government has deployed 2,000 additional troops, raising the regional presence to more than 8,000, and insists coordination and intelligence will make the difference. Yet many residents remain skeptical after decades of failed plans. Security analysts warn that targeting smaller groups may inadvertently strengthen the dominant Jalisco cartel. For farmers in the hills, the war feels endless. One woman, who fled her home earlier this year, returned only when the army arrived. She sent her teenage son to the U.S. fearing he would be recruited or kidnapped. Mines still detonate when animals cross them, and civilians remain trapped between shifting front lines. Communities are increasingly taking security into their own hands. In several Indigenous towns, residents have set up their own patrols after cartels stormed guard posts. Yet in lime-growing regions, the loss of key leaders has left producers voiceless. Growers say extortion has pushed them to abandon orchards, with prices controlled entirely by organized crime. Representative Bernardo Bravo, who called it “permanent commercial kidnapping,” was killed just weeks before Manzo. Without him, farmers say they have no one to advocate for them. “We don’t see a resolution,” one grower said. “The criminals are squeezing us tight.”  

Mitchell Starc etched his name into Test cricket history on the opening day of the Brisbane Test, overtaking Pakistan great Wasim Akram to become the highest wicket-taker among left-arm fast bowlers in the format. Starc reached the landmark when he dismissed Harry Brook in the second session, drawing a slip catch from an attempted drive. Turkey’s energy minister has urged greater protection of Black Sea oil and gas routes after three Russian tankers were struck off the Turkish coast, warning that the region’s critical energy lifelines are increasingly at risk. Minister Alparslan Bayraktar said Ankara is alarmed not only by the threat to commercial vessels but also to two major undersea pipelines — Blue Stream and TurkStream — that deliver Russian gas directly to Turkey. Citing the 2022 Nord Stream sabotage, he stressed Turkey’s heavy dependence on imported energy. “We call on all parties to keep energy infrastructure out of this war because it concerns people’s daily lives,” Bayraktar told reporters Wednesday. “Energy flows in the Black Sea and the Bosphorus and Dardanelles straits must remain uninterrupted.” Ukraine says its naval drones hit two Russian tankers on Nov. 28, while a third was damaged Tuesday as it approached the port of Sinop. President Recep Tayyip Erdogan earlier denounced the attacks, calling them a threat to navigation, human life and the marine environment within Turkey’s exclusive economic zone. Nearly half of Turkey’s total energy supply comes from Russian oil and gas. Ankara, a NATO member, faces mounting pressure from Washington to scale back its energy reliance on Moscow. During President Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s visit to President Donald Trump in September, the U.S. urged Turkey to loosen its energy ties with Russia. Turkish companies later signed a multibillion-dollar deal to purchase U.S. liquefied natural gas. Bayraktar defended the relationship, saying Russia had long been “a very reliable supply” for Turkish consumers since the 1980s. Still, he acknowledged the need to diversify. “We don’t want to rely on one country or a few countries,” he said, noting that Turkey seeks more competitive and varied sources of natural gas. He confirmed that state-owned BOTAS recently finalized a new supply contract with Russia’s Gazprom. Turkey’s cooperation with Russia also extends to nuclear energy. Rosatom is constructing the four-reactor Akkuyu nuclear power plant on Turkey’s Mediterranean coast, expected eventually to provide around 10% of the country’s electricity. The project, however, has suffered repeated delays linked to Western sanctions on Russian entities following Moscow’s 2022 invasion of Ukraine. Bayraktar said the plant is still on track to generate its first electricity next year. Some components are now being sourced from China after Western suppliers declined involvement due to sanctions. He added that financing challenges persist, including around $2 billion “stuck in JP Morgan for a long time” after Western nations froze Russian assets. “We need to play a moderator role to help release this money because it is intended for the project,” he said.  

Police on Thursday dispersed activists of several left-leaning political parties as they attempted to proceed toward the Chief Adviser’s Jamuna residence demanding cancellation of lease agreements for Laldia and Pangaon terminals and lease process of profitable port facilities including New Mooring and Patenga terminals. The protest was jointly organised by the Left Democratic Alliance, Anti-Fascist Left Front, Bangladesh JASAD and the National Ganafront. The left-leaning political parties gathered in front of the Jatiya Press Club around 11:30am and began marching towards Kakrail via Paltan, Bijoynagar, and Nightingale intersection. Around 12:30pm, police blocked the road with barricades at Kakrail. When protesters tried to move towards CA’s residence police obstructed them, triggering a scuffle, leaving 15-20 participants injured. The protesters later held a brief rally at Kakrail intersection. They also demanded disclosure and cancellation of all ‘secret and unequal agreements’ signed with the United States and India. BNP on Thursday (December 04) placed three new election-related proposals before the Election Commission (EC) and said it has no objection to the EC announcing the election schedule in time. A three-member BNP delegation led by Standing Committee Member Nazrul Islam Khan met Chief Election Commissioner AMM Nasir Uddin at the EC headquarters in Agargaon. Talking to reporters after the nearly 90-minute meeting, Nazrul said BNP is not in favour the deferment of the national election unless there are unavoidable circumstances. “Therefore, BNP has no objection if the EC declares the poll schedule within its stipulated timeline.” BNP announces 36 more possible candidates for national election  Asked whether Khaleda Zia’s illness might affect the election, Nazrul said, “We expect she will recover and return to us soon, and be able to participate in election-related activities.” Regarding Tarique Rahman’s voter status, he said, “He is a Bangladeshi citizen. There is no barrier to him becoming a voter. The Commission can enrol him anytime it wishes.” Nazrul said the BNP proposed increasing the number of polling booths, marking places, and ballot seals for the upcoming 13th national election. “We want every voter in the country to have the opportunity to cast their vote. The number of voters has increased significantly compared to the previous election, so we made this proposal. This time, a national referendum will be held alongside the parliamentary election, which will add additional pressure. The Commission will give its decision on Sunday,” he said. BNP also urged the EC to allow expatriate Bangladeshis without National ID cards to register as voters using their passports. “If needed, the Commission can verify passports. Many expatriates do not have NIDs. They should be given the opportunity to register with their passports,” Nazrul noted. Khaleda led from the streets, not from palaces: Moyeen Khan To ensure transparency in the election, BNP reiterated its objection to printing ballot papers at any non-government institution. “At present, ballot papers are printed at three government facilities. BNP insists that no private institution be given this responsibility,” he said. Three  more deaths were reported from dengue in 24 hours till Thursday morning, raising the number of fatalities from the mosquito-borne disease in Bangladesh to 394 this year. During the same period, 565 new patients were admitted to hospitals, raising the total number of dengue cases this year to 96,627, according to the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS). The new fatalities were reported in Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) and Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC). Last year, dengue claimed 575 lives, with 101,214 cases and 100,040 recoveries recorded during the same period.  

Britain and Norway will begin joint naval patrols to safeguard undersea cables and track Russian submarines, the U.K. government announced Thursday as Prime Minister Keir Starmer met Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre for defence talks. Officials said a combined force of at least 13 vessels will operate in the North Atlantic to “hunt Russian submarines and protect critical infrastructure,” amid growing concerns over maritime security. The move follows a £10 billion ($13.4 billion) agreement in August for Norway to purchase at least five British-built frigates. Those ships will work alongside eight Royal Navy vessels along NATO’s northern flank. The two countries’ defence ministers formalised the pact in London on Thursday, which also includes a commitment for the Royal Navy to adopt Norwegian-made missiles for its surface fleet. Starmer and Støre were expected to continue discussions at 10 Downing Street before travelling to RAF Lossiemouth in Scotland to meet British and Norwegian crews monitoring Russian naval movements. According to U.K. officials, Russian activity around British waters has risen by 30% over the past two years.

But the initiative has again hit long-standing obstacles, particularly over whether Ukraine must cede territory to Russia and how future security guarantees for Kyiv would work. Trump’s special envoy Steve Witkoff and son-in-law Jared Kushner are scheduled to meet Ukraine’s chief negotiator, Rustem Umerov, in Miami later Thursday, according to a senior Trump administration official who spoke on condition of anonymity. Putin described his five-hour talks with Witkoff and Kushner in the Kremlin on Tuesday as “necessary,” “useful” and “difficult,” noting that some parts of the U.S. proposal were impossible for Russia to accept. Speaking to India Today TV ahead of a visit to New Delhi, Putin said both sides “had to go through each point” of the U.S. plan, which prolonged the discussions. Russian state agencies Tass and RIA Novosti released excerpts before the full interview aired. “It was a very concrete conversation,” Putin said, adding that while Moscow is prepared to discuss certain provisions, “others we can’t agree to.” Trump said Wednesday that his envoys left Moscow convinced that Putin genuinely wants to reach a settlement. “Their impression was very strongly that he’d like to make a deal,” he said. Meanwhile, Russian attacks on Ukrainian cities continued overnight. A missile strike in Kryvyi Rih on Wednesday injured six people, including a 3-year-old girl, and damaged dozens of homes, a school and gas pipelines, city chief Oleksandr Vilkul said. In Kherson, a 6-year-old girl died after being wounded by artillery fire the previous day, regional military head Oleksandr Prokudin reported. The Kherson Thermal Power Plant, which supplies heat to more than 40,000 residents, was forced to shut down Thursday following days of Russian drone and artillery strikes, he said. Authorities have convened emergency meetings to secure alternative heating sources. In the meantime, warming tents with charging points have been set up across the city. In Odesa, Russian drone strikes wounded six people and damaged civilian and energy infrastructure, regional administrator Oleh Kiper said. Ukrainian officials reported that Russia launched two ballistic missiles and 138 drones overnight. In the Russia-occupied part of Kherson, two men were killed and a 68-year-old woman was wounded when a Ukrainian drone hit their vehicle, Moscow-installed regional head Vladimir Saldo said.

A team of doctors will travel with Madam.” The BNP leader said the royal air ambulance is equipped with very modern facilities. “It has everything available, even an operation theatre.” Fakhrul said the medical board formed with local and foreign specialists has recommended shifting Khaleda to a specialised hospital in the UK for better treatment, and BNP’s Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman has given his consent to the decision. He said several specialist doctors and two foreign physicians will accompany Khaleda Zia during her trip to the UK. Regarding her current condition, Zahid said every step has been taken strictly as advised by the medical board. “They advised that sending her to London at this stage is the most appropriate. We hope she will recover and return to us.” On 8 January, Khaleda Zia travelled to London in a special air ambulance sent by the Emir of Qatar for advanced medical treatment and returned home on 6 May by the special air ambulance. The former prime minister has been receiving treatment at Evercare Hospital since 23 November after being admitted with multiple health complications. As her condition worsened, she was moved to the Critical Care Unit on 27 November, where she is still under close observation. Doctors said Khaleda Zia is receiving intensive care for several complications related to her liver, kidneys and heart. A medical board, led by Professor Shahabuddin Talukder, is supervising her treatment with support from specialist physicians. The government has declared Khaleda Zia a ‘Very Very Important Person’ and deployed members of the Special Security Force to ensure her safety.  

Environment Adviser Syeda Rizwana Hasan on Thursday said only former Prime Minister and BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia, as of now, is entitled to receive the prescribed facilities designated for a ‘very, very important person’ (VVIP) of the State. The government has declared Khaleda Zia a VVIP and deployed members of the Special Security Force to ensure her safety. “A gazette notification in this regard has already been issued…as of now the facilities are being provided to Begum Khaleda Zia,” said Adviser Rizwana while responding to a question during a media briefing at the Foreign Service Academy. There had been speculations over whether these facilities were also being extended to her family members. Chief Adviser’s Press Secretary Shafiqul Alam and Deputy Press Secretary Abul Kalam Azad Majumder also spoke at the briefing, which highlighted the outcomes of the Council of Advisers’ meeting chaired by Chief Adviser Prof Muhammad Yunus. Three buses were burnt as a fire broke out at the BRTC bus depot in Sonapur of Noakhali district town early Thursday. Md Arifur Rahman tushar, manager of BRTC Sonapur, said the fire broke out at the bus depot around 2:30 am. He also suspected the incident as an act of sabotage. On information, two firefighting units rushed to the spot and extinguished the blaze, said assistant director of Noakhali Fire Service and civil Defense, Farid Uddin. The fire burnt down a double decker bus of Noakhali Science and Technology University fully and the upper portion of two buses—Gulbahar and Maloti—at the depot, he said. What caused the fire could not be known immediately,said the fire service official.    

The United Nations in Bangladesh on Thursday briefed registered political parties on its technical assistance to the Election Commission (EC) for the upcoming national election. The UN team provided an overview to the representatives of political parties on the key elements of its electoral assistance, followed by a question-and-answer session. Through the BALLOT Project, the UN is supporting the Election Commission to strengthen its operational capacity and train BEC staff, support voter and civic education, supply critical materials and promote greater inclusion in electoral processes and information integrity. Bangladesh Bank Governor Dr Ahsan H Mansur on Thursday said the country’s economic policy is independently formulated and not dictated by the International Monetary Fund (IMF) or the World Bank. “If we follow their prescriptions blindly, the exchange rate could surge to around Tk 170–180 per US dollar, as has happened in Pakistan and Sri Lanka,” he said. The governor made the remarks while speaking as the special guest at the ‘Investment Dialogue with Local Partners’ held at the multipurpose hall of the Bangladesh Investment Development Authority (BIDA) on Thursday. Energy Adviser Muhammad Fouzul Kabir Khan was also present as the chief guest in the programme. Dr Mansur said inflation is expected to fall to 5 percent by the end of the current fiscal year, FY2025-26. Consequently, the policy rate would likely be reduced to 8–9 percent, with lending rates settling between 10 and 11 percent. He cautioned that reducing interest rates without controlling inflation could destabilise the exchange rate and the money market, responding to businesses’ demands for lower lending rates. Citing examples from India and China, the governor noted that their low interest rates—3 percent and zero percent, respectively—reflect their economic conditions, which differ from Bangladesh’s. “We are not currently taking IMF loan installments because some conditions cannot be fulfilled at this time for the sake of our economy. When needed, we will take IMF loans after fully meeting the global lender’s conditions,” he added. About the financial sector, Dr. Mansur said it has now emerged from previous data manipulations that had posed serious risks to the country. For instance, while official figures under the previous regime showed single-digit inflation, actual inflation was around 12–13 percent, with lending rates in single digits, leaving depositors with negative returns. Similarly, defaulted loans were underreported, shown below double digits, though they stood at around 35 percent in September 2025. Current accounts have now been corrected. On the question of recovering defaulted loans through the sale of industry assets, the governor clarified that industries should not be penalized for individual mismanagement. He cited the example of the SS power plant of S. Alam Group, which continues to operate with support from Bangladesh Bank for LC openings. The project involves about US $2.5 billion in investment, 80 percent of which is foreign-owned. Although the plant is running, S. Alam will not retain any profit, as all funds will be used to repay liabilities, he added. Dr Mansur pointed out that Bangladesh Bank has received 1,300 applications for loan restructuring, approving 250 of them. The remaining applications have been forwarded to respective banks for customer- and client-based restructuring. He projected that defaulted loans will decrease by 5 percent by March FY2025-26, but bringing overall non-performing loans to a reasonable level may take 8–10 years. Deaths from last week’s catastrophic floods and landslides in parts of Asia surged past 1,500 Thursday as rescue teams raced to reach survivors isolated by the disaster with hundreds of people still unaccounted for across the region. The tragedy of so much death and destruction was compounded by warnings that decades of deforestation caused by unchecked development, mining and palm oil plantations may have worsened the devastation. Calls grew for the government to act. “We need the government to investigate and fix forest management,” said Rangga Adiputra, a 31-year-old teacher whose home in West Sumatra was swept away. The hills above his village on the outskirts of Padang city had been scarred by illegal logging. “We don’t want this costly disaster to happen again," he said. Authorities said 837 people were confirmed dead in Indonesia, 479 in Sri Lanka and 185 in Thailand, as well as three in Malaysia. Many villages in Indonesia and Sri Lanka remained buried under mud and debris, with 861 people still unaccounted for in both countries. Thousands reportedly faced severe shortages of food and clean water in cut off areas. The floods and landslides washed away roads and bridges and knocked out telecommunications, leaving many communities inaccessible. Indonesian television showed images of huge amounts of felled timber carried downstream in North Sumatra, West Sumatra and Aceh provinces. The leading Indonesian environmental group WALHI said that decades of deforestation — driven by mining, palm oil plantations, and illegal logging — stripped away natural defenses that once absorbed rainfall and stabilized soil. “The disaster was not just nature’s fury, it was amplified by decades of deforestation,” said Rianda Purba, an activist with the group. “Deforestation and unchecked development have stripped Sumatra of its resilience.” The group recorded more than 240,000 hectares (nearly 600,000 acres) of primary forest were lost in 2024 alone, leaving Sumatra’s small river basins dangerously exposed. Another environmental group, Global Forest Watch, has said the flood-inundated Indonesian provinces of Aceh, North Sumatra and West Sumatra have since 2000 lost 19,600 square kilometers (7,569 square miles) of forest, an area larger than the state of New Jersey. "Unless restoration begins now, more lives will be lost,” Purba warned. Massive piles of neatly cut timber lay scattered among the debris across Parkit Beach, a sight that stunned emergency crews deployed to the area. “From their shape, it was clear these were not just trees torn out naturally by the flood, but timber that had been deliberately cut,” said a member of a clean-up crew, Neviana, who goes by a single name. In Batang Toru, the worst-hit areas in North Sumatra, where seven companies operate, hundreds of hectares had been cleared for gold mining and energy projects, leaving slopes exposed and riverbeds choked with sediment. Rivers there were swollen with runoff and timber, while villages were buried or swept away. Lawmakers called for the companies' permits to be revoked. Facing public outrage, Environment Minister Hanif Faisol Nurofiq announced an investigation into eight companies suspected of worsening the disaster. He said environmental permits will be reviewed and future assessments must factor in extreme rainfall scenarios. “Someone must be held accountable,” he said.

A man was shot and wounded in a reported gun attack by miscreants at Palashbari in Ashulia of Savar on Wednesday night. The victim was identified as Simanto Hossain, a worker of Gildan Garment in Baipail area of Ashulia. Jalal Uddin, Officer-in-Charge of Dhaka DB (Uttar), said the miscreants opened fire on Shimanto over a trifling matter on Wednesday night, leaving him injured. Later, he was taken to the local hospital. Police also arrested four people- Abdul Mannan Patowari, Monowar Hossain Titu, Al Amin Swapan and Julhas Mia- over  their suspected involvement in the attack from the area on Wednesday night. Police also recovered arms and ammunition from their possession. A case was filed in this connection on Thursday.  

BNP on Thursday announced 36 more candidates, including four for Dhaka, to contest the upcoming national election. BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir revealed the names of the candidates at the party Chairperson’s Gulshan office in the afternoon.  “We are announcing another 36 seats, and there are still many remaining--around 28 will be left for later. Our alliance partners’ seats and a few of ours that need further decisions will be announced later. We will announce the rest at the appropriate time,” Fakhrul added. Three women were killed as a speeding truck overturned and fell on them along Karikandi–Rajapur road in Titas upazila of Cumilla district on Thursday noon. The deceased were identified as Rina Akter, 35, wife of Shukkur Ali; Rozina Akter, 30, wife of Imon Miah; and Samshun Nahar, 40, wife of Faruk Miah. Of them, Rozina and Nahar were sisters-in-law while Rina was their nephew’s wife. According to locals, when the three women were bathing in the Titas River the empty truck heading from Rajapur to Korikandi Bazar overturned in front of Imon Mia’s house and fell on them. Rina and Rozina died on the spot while locals rescued Shamsun Nahar in critical condition and took her to the Titas Upazila Health Complex where doctors declared her dead, said Khaled Saifullah, Officer-in-Charge of Titas Police Station.  

BNP Chairperson and former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia will be flown to London for advanced medical treatment, either at midnight on Thursday or Friday morning, her personal physician and party standing committee member AZM Zahid Hossain said on Thursday. The decision was made unanimously by a medical board comprising local and foreign specialists, he told reporters at a press briefing in front of Evercare Hospital in Dhaka. “She will be taken to London by a Qatar Royal air ambulance. We have selected a hospital in London for her treatment and, InshAllah, we will take her there,” he said. He said several specialist doctors and two foreign physicians will accompany Khaleda Zia during her trip to the UK. Qatar air ambulance set to fly Khaleda to London: BNP Adviser Regarding her current health condition, Zahid said every step has been taken strictly following the recommendations of the medical board. “They advised that sending her to London at this stage is the most appropriate. We hope she will recover and return to us,” he added. Dr Zahid sought prayers from the nation for her quick recovery. BNP sources said the Emir of Qatar has assured full cooperation in facilitating her transfer abroad. All arrangements have been completed to bring an air ambulance from Qatar to take Khaleda Zia to London for better treatment, said BNP Chairperson’s Adviser Amanul Haq Chowdhury. As her condition worsened, she was moved to the Coronary Care Unit on November 27, where she is still under close monitoring. Doctors said Khaleda Zia is receiving intensive care for several complications related to her liver, kidneys and heart. All arrangements have been completed to bring an air ambulance from Qatar to take Khaleda Zia to London for better treatment, said BNP Chairperson’s Adviser Amanul Haq Chowdhury on Thursday. The air ambulance may arrive tonight (Thursday night) and the medical board will decide when she will be flown to London, he told UNB. “We hope she will be taken to London tomorrow,” he said. Chief Adviser Prof Muhammad Yunus on Thursday urged senior police officers to uphold their highest level of responsibility and sincerity as the country moves toward what he described as a ‘historic, festive and peaceful’ national election, one that will go beyond the ‘traditional’ election. “This is not an ordinary election. It will be a post-uprising election, different from all traditional elections. Through this election, a new Bangladesh will emerge,” he said, underscoring the importance of the next three months. Prof Yunus made the remarks while addressing the Superintendents of Police (SPs) from all 64 districts, along with other senior police officials, at the Chief Adviser’s Office. The national election is scheduled to be held in the first half of February next year.Speaking about the role of SPs in ensuring a festive and peaceful election environment, Prof Yunus stressed the need for carrying out duties with utmost precision and without mistakes. He said the government is committed to building a stronger institutional structure, one that will never falter. Prof Yunus also briefly reflected on previous controversial elections, mentioning that the police have the opportunity to help bring about positive change by acting without bias.“It is a historic responsibility,” the Chief Adviser added. Prof Yunus called on the SPs to play a role in holding an acceptable election, pointing out that the next election is a historic responsibility for everyone and encouraged them to take the responsibility as a challenge. He said through the uprising they dreamt of a new Bangladesh, and through the upcoming election, they aim to carry that dream forward. Prof Yunus said a referendum will also be held simultaneously during the upcoming general election, which will serve as the basis for building the Bangladesh of the future. Prof Yunus said many delegations and election observers from abroad will come in the upcoming elections. The Superintendents of Police should work towards this so that they can present this election as a wonderful example to the whole world, he said. The High Court (HC) on Thursday delivered a split verdict on the legality of the ongoing process to sign an operational agreement between the Chittagong Port Authority (CPA) and a foreign company for running the New Mooring Container Terminal (NCT). The joint bench of Justice Fatema Najib and Justice Fatema Anwar issued separate orders. Justice Fatema Najib declared the contract process illegal, while Justice Fatema Anwar ruled an opposite one. Following the split decision, lawyers said the matter will now be sent to the Chief Justice, who will assign another HC bench to settle the issue. Barrister Muhammad Jamiruddin Sircar, Advocate Ahsanul Karim, Barrister Mahbub Uddin Khokan and Barrister Kayser Kamal argued for the writ petitioners. Attorney General Md Asaduzzaman and Additional Attorney General Anik R. Huq represented the state. Container handling at Ctg Port up 9% in Aug-October: CPA Chairman Earlier, on November 25, the court concluded hearings on the rule regarding the legality of the foreign-operator agreement for NCT and set December 4 for delivering the order. The bench also questioned why a directive should not be given to ensure fair and competitive public bidding, in line with relevant laws and policies, before appointing any operator for the NCT. South Korean President Lee Jae Myung said Wednesday that he is considering offering an apology to North Korea amid allegations that former conservative President Yoon Suk Yeol deliberately heightened military tensions ahead of his short-lived declaration of martial law in December 2024. Marking the first anniversary of Yoon’s failed takeover, Lee — who won a snap election after Yoon’s removal in April — emphasized his intention to improve relations with Pyongyang. However, he drew criticism when he said he was unaware of the longstanding detentions of several South Koreans in North Korea. A special prosecutor indicted Yoon and two military leaders last month, accusing them of ordering drone missions over North Korea to escalate tensions. South Korean media also reported this week that balloons carrying anti-North Korean leaflets were launched during Yoon’s presidency. Lee Weighs an Apology Although the allegations have not been proven, Lee signaled he believes an apology may be warranted.“I think an apology is needed, but I’ve held back out of concern it could be used to attack me politically,” he said. The opposition conservative People Power Party condemned Lee’s remarks and said he should protect the military’s integrity. North Korea has claimed that the South flew drones over Pyongyang to drop propaganda materials several times in October 2024, though the South Korean military has not confirmed this. Since taking office in June, Lee has tried to ease tensions by shutting down border loudspeakers and stopping activist groups from sending leaflets by balloon. Relatives expressed deep disappointment over his comments. Human rights experts criticized the president for not knowing the issue, saying it is his responsibility to seek solutions despite the difficulty. The Unification Ministry said it continues efforts to secure the detainees’ release and last raised the issue during high-level talks in 2018. Family members said the current minister recently met with them and expressed a desire to restart dialogue with the North. Recalling the Martial Law Crisis Lee also revisited the events of Yoon’s attempted “self-coup,” praising citizens who gathered outside the National Assembly and helped lawmakers overturn the martial law order. He recounted livestreaming his rush to the Assembly as troops surrounded the building, even climbing a fence to get inside. Yoon was impeached later that month and formally removed from office in April. He is now imprisoned and facing charges of rebellion and other crimes. In a new statement, Yoon maintained that declaring martial law was necessary to counter liberal forces he accused of disrupting the government.

China and France committed to strengthening collaboration on major global challenges—including the war in Ukraine—and on trade, as France prepares to assume the presidency of the G7 next year. French President Emmanuel Macron met Chinese leader Xi Jinping on Thursday during a three-day state visit focused on commerce and diplomacy. France Seeks China’s Help on Ukraine Macron hopes to persuade Beijing to play a stronger role in pressuring Russia toward a ceasefire, following renewed diplomatic efforts linked to a U.S.-backed peace initiative. He warned that the international system that has ensured decades of peace is at risk and said cooperation between France and China is now “more essential than ever.” Macron urged China to support a call for at least a temporary halt on strikes targeting critical Ukrainian infrastructure. Xi did not directly address France’s request but reiterated that China “supports all efforts conducive to peace” and favors a settlement acceptable to all parties. China has been one of Russia’s key diplomatic backers since the invasion and has increased trade with Moscow. Xi also pledged $100 million in aid for humanitarian relief and reconstruction efforts in Gaza. Calling for stronger political trust, Xi said China and France should support each other on key issues while demonstrating “independence” in their decision-making. Expanding Economic Ties Trade was another major theme of the meeting. Xi announced agreements to boost cooperation in aerospace, aviation, nuclear power, green technology, and artificial intelligence. Chuadanga experienced a noticeable drop in temperature on Thursday, disrupting daily life and causing hardship for low-income workers. The district recorded the day’s lowest temperature at 12.2 degrees Celsius at 6am and again at 9am, with humidity at 89 percent, said Jaminur Rahman, in-charge of Chuadanga meteorological observatory. He said Wednesday’s temperature was 13.7 degrees Celsius and the temperature may fall further in the coming days. Dense fog covered the district early in the morning, though the sun appeared later. The sunshine brought little relief from the cold, forcing rickshaw pullers, day labourers and other low-income groups to work in harsh conditions. “My hands and feet go numb in the cold. Fewer passengers mean my earnings have dropped,” said rickshaw puller Liakat Ali. A day labourer said they do not have enough warm clothes and even sunlight cannot ease the chill.

World Bank Group President Ajay Banga and Asian Development Bank (ADB) President Masato Kanda on Thursday announced the first two Pacific projects to be delivered under the Full Mutual Reliance Framework, an innovative cofinancing model that will boost development impact. The framework will allow countries to work with a single lead lender, either ADB or the World Bank, guiding all aspects of project design, preparation, supervision, and evaluation. It will streamline processes and reduce duplication between the two institutions. Countries will benefit from faster project implementation, lower transaction costs, and continued adherence to high policy standards. The first two projects under the framework are a major health modernization initiative in Fiji and an integrated transport, urban, and water infrastructure investment in Tonga. “Our goal is to make development finance simpler, faster, and more effective,” said ADB President Masato Kanda. “With this approach, we respond to client needs to solve complex challenges together, from disaster resilience to better connectivity, while supporting their long-term vision for prosperity.” “We pursued this framework for one core reason: our clients asked us to make their lives easier. To work faster. To be better partners,” said World Bank Group President Ajay Banga. “This is an important step forward — for our institutions, yes, but far more importantly, for the countries and communities who count on us to deliver real results.” The operationalization of the framework in the Pacific reflects the already close partnership between ADB and the World Bank Group in the region, and responds to the needs of client countries for more rapid, streamlined, and effective development financing. The $236.5 million Pacific Healthy Islands Transformation (PHIT) project, led by the World Bank, aims to tackle noncommunicable diseases, which are among the leading causes of death across Pacific island countries. The project will mark the largest single operation of the World Bank Group in the Pacific. In Fiji, the project will modernize primary health-care networks and support a new, state-of-the-art regional hospital, giving people across the Pacific greater access to treatment for cancer, cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and other major health conditions. The World Bank Board has approved its financing for this project. ADB’s proposed cofinancing will be presented to its Board for consideration in early 2026. The second, ADB-led project, the Tonga Sustainable Economic Corridors and Urban Resilience (SECURE) project, was approved by its Board of Directors on 20 November 2025. With ADB and the World Bank expected to provide a combined total of $120 million in grant financing, SECURE will be the largest development partner–financed project undertaken in Tonga’s history. The project will make transformational infrastructure upgrades to Greater Nuku’alofa’s transport network and urban drainage systems, including the 720-meter-long Fanga’uta lagoon bridge. These investments will reduce traffic congestion, improving market access for rural residents and enhancing connectivity to essential infrastructure including the airport and the port. They will also provide secure evacuation routes during disaster events, including tsunamis. World Bank cofinancing will be presented to its Board in early 2026.  

Fifteen volumes of historical ethnographic data on 1971 have been handed over to the Liberation War Research Center of North South University (NSU). Professor Afsan Chowdhury, Editor-at-Large of UNB and Dhaka Courier and an adjunct faculty member of BRAC University, handed the documents at an event at the office of NSU’s Liberation War Research Center on Wednesday. Prof Abdur Rob Khan, Pro-VC of NSU, received the documents on behalf of Vice Chancellor Prof Abdul Hannan Chowdhury. Prof Mahbubur Rahman, Director of the center and Chair of the Department of History and Philosophy, moderated the event. The 15-volume collection is based on a census of 2,300 villages in Naogaon district in northern Bangladesh. The survey was completed in 2018. Prof Afsan Chowdhury thanked the NSU authorities for taking the initiative to preserve the documents for researchers and anyone interested in the history of 1971 Liberation War.

Trading at both the Dhaka Stock Exchange (DSE) and the Chittagong Stock Exchange (CSE) began on a downward note Thursday, with most listed companies seeing price declines. At the DSE, the benchmark DSEX index dropped by 38 points in the first hour of trading. The Shariah-based DSES index slid 9 points, while the blue-chip DS30 index also fell by 9 points. Market data shows that prices fell for the majority of traded issues, with 284 companies declining against 48 advancing, while 48 remained unchanged. The turnover during the first half exceeded Tk 168 crore. The bearish trend persisted at the CSE as well, where the overall index lost 45 points. Only 20 issues advanced compared to 48 that declined, and 10 remained unchanged. The turnover at the CSE reached Tk 7 crore in the same period.

A Bangladeshi man was shot dead allegedly by members of India’s Border Security Force (BSF) along the Patgram border in Lalmonirhat early Thursday (December 04, 2025). The deceased was identified as Sabuj Mia, 29, son of Sirajul Islam of Pochabandar village under Jagatber union in Lalmonirhat. Locals said Sabuj and a group of farmers had gone to the Shamshernagar frontier area at dawn to work on their croplands when gunshots were heard from the Indian side. Sabuj was found critically injured moments later. Shamshernagar Border Outpost Commander Kamal Uddin, quoting locals, said BSF members later took away the body. Meanwhile, Abul Kasem, company commander of the BGB-51 Battalion, said repeated attempts had been made to arrange a flag meeting, and high-level communication with the BSF was underway. Rajshahi University (RU) has taken disciplinary action against three teachers and five students following allegations of sexual harassment and other forms of misconduct. The decisions were approved at the university’s 544th syndicate meeting and took immediate effect, according to a notice issued by the Public Relations Office late Wednesday. Associate Professor Anik Krishna Karmakar of the Department of Applied Chemistry and Chemical Engineering has been suspended for three years and barred from taking part in any examination-related activities for the next ten years. He was initially suspended on February 17 this year after allegations of sexual harassment surfaced, prompting the formation of an inquiry committee. The syndicate finalised its decision based on the committee’s report. Meanwhile, Prof Prabhash Kumar Karmakar of the Statistics Department and Associate Prof Mohammad Hedayet Ullah of the Finance Department have been temporarily suspended. A further probe body will review their cases before final decisions are made, said Prof Akhtar Hossain Majumdar, administrator of the university’s Public Relations Office. The action against Prof Prabhash follows student protests on August 13 demanding his expulsion over sexual harassment allegations, after which the university formed an investigation committee on August 17. Of the five students found guilty, studentship of two has been cancelled, one has been expelled, and two others have been suspended for one year. The university did not publish their names as the list includes female students, Prof Majumdar added.

Dhanush and Kriti Sanon’s Tere Ishk Mein has raked in Rs 76.75 crore at the box office in its first six days, ahead of the release of Dhurandhar tomorrow (December 5). Despite a slight dip on Wednesday, the film continued to perform steadily. According to Sacnilk, Tere Ishk Mein earned Rs 6.75 crore on Wednesday, taking its total to Rs 76.75 crore. The film had earlier seen strong numbers, with Rs 17 crore on Saturday, Rs 18.75 crore on Sunday, and Rs 16 crore on its opening day. A mild earthquake jolted Dhaka and nearby areas early Thursday (December 04), according to the Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD). BMD reported that the 4.1-magnitude quake struck at around 6:14am, with its epicentre in Shibpur upazila of Narsingdi, about 38 kilometres northeast of the BMD Seismic Observatory and Research Centre in Agargaon.  No casualties have been reported so far. Mild earthquake jolts Dhaka, adjacent areas again The Euro-Mediterranean Seismological Centre placed the epicentre 33 kilometres east-northeast of Tongi and three kilometres north of Narsingdi, at a depth of 30 kilometres. A stronger earthquake, measuring 5.7 in magnitude, had earlier shaken Dhaka and several regions on November 21, also originating from Narsingdi.  Since then, several minor tremors have been recorded across the country, most with epicentres in Narsingdi. The United States will restrict visas for Nigerians and their family members responsible for mass killings and violence against Christians, the U.S. State Department said Wednesday. “The United States is taking decisive action in response to the mass killings and violence against Christians by radical Islamic terrorists, Fulani ethnic militias, and other violent actors in Nigeria and beyond,” Secretary of State Marco Rubio said in a statement posted on social platform X. The secretary added that the policy would apply to other governments or individuals engaged in violations of religious freedom. The restrictions are in line with a new policy under Section 212(a)(3)(C) of the Immigration and Nationality Act, he said. Attacks in Nigeria have varying motives. There are religiously motivated ones targeting both Christians and Muslims, clashes between farmers and herders over dwindling resources, communal rivalries, secessionist groups, and ethnic clashes. Nigeria’s population of about 220 million people is split almost equally between Christians and Muslims. The West African country has long faced insecurity from various fronts including the Boko Haram extremist group, which seeks to establish its radical interpretation of Islamic law and has also targeted Muslims it deems not Muslim enough. Also, there has been an uptick in the activities of armed gangs in the central part of the country who kidnap locals for ransom. Two women were killed on Wednesday night when a bus hit an auto-rickshaw on the Dinajpur–Rangpur highway in the Tribondhon area of Jonpur. The deceased were identified as Morsheda, 35, wife of Jahangir Alam of Isam village in Nilphamari’s Sharifpur, and Aduri, 18, daughter of Subhash Chandra Roy of Dighon Dangi in the same district. Omar Faruk, officer-in-charge of the Highway Police Station, said the accident occurred around 8pm near the Trillion Gold Company when a bus coming from the opposite direction crashed into the auto-rickshaw, leaving both women dead on the spot. He said the bus has been seized, but the number of injured could not yet be confirmed.

A mobile court operation was conducted in Ashulia and Gorat areas of Savar to protect national resources by removing illegal gas connections, the Ministry of Power, Energy, and Mineral Resources said on Wednesday. During the operation, approximately 3 kilometers of unauthorized gas distribution lines were dismantled. Around 700 illegal residential gas burners were disconnected, and 600 meters of unauthorized pipes were removed. The immediate disconnected gas load reached 14,700 cubic feet per hour. Authorities estimate that the crackdown will save 99,902 cubic meters of gas per month, valued at roughly Tk 1,798,236. No fines were imposed during the operation. Officials stated that such drives will continue to ensure uninterrupted gas supply to legitimate customers and prevent wastage.

The body of a three-year-old girl who went missing from Pabhati village in Jhenaidah town on Wednesday morning, was recovered from a neighbour’s house on the same night. Police suspect Saima Akhter Saba, daughter of Saidul Islam of the village, was murdered. Saba went missing around 8am while playing near her home, said SI Manoj Kumar Ghosh of Jhenaidah Sadar Police Station. Her father later filed a general diary (GD) regarding her disappearance. Following the GD, police and locals searched nearby areas, including a pond, but found no trace of the child until evening. Her body was discovered around 9:30pm inside the house of Masud, a local resident. Police believe the child may have been killed in a planned manner. Shantana Khatun, 30, wife of Masud, has been detained for questioning, said SI Manoj.

Speaking as the Special Guest, Bangladesh Bank Governor Dr. Ahsan H. Mansur said that exporters from any sector, including frozen food, have the opportunity to take loans of up to Tk 5 crore from the Export Development Fund (EDF). Such a provision that is already in place but often goes unutilized by shrimp exporters. However, Dr. Mansur suggested that the main issue might not be financing for the processing industry. "I believe financing is not the problem in the shrimp processing industry. Loan facilities can be increased at the farmer level. But their productivity must be prioritized first. Better technology and improved breeds are needed," he added. The Governor emphasized that while the central bank is prepared to offer policy support, entrepreneurs must lead export expansion efforts with realistic planning. He added that both the private sector and the government must actively identify scopes for expansion and potential export opportunities. In a study paper presentation, Dr. Bazlul Haque Khondker, Research Director of the Policy Research Institute (PRI), strongly advocated for the creation of a dedicated Tk 2,500 crore shrimp aquaculture fund. This fund is proposed to be extended to shrimp farmers and facilitators as a soft loan at a 4 percent interest rate. The facility would be categorized to support the processors, small holding farmers, women entrepreneurs, Non-Resident Bangladeshi (NRB) investors.   The presentation highlighted the severe challenges facing the industry. Despite having vast marine and freshwater resources, the frozen food sector, once a top export earner, is suffering from stagnant production, high costs, and low global competitiveness, the study finds. The sector's export value dropped to US $334 million in 2024, down from $441.5 million in the last fiscal year. Though the e industry provides livelihoods to over 17 million people, and potential opportunities to earn $5 billion, the shrimp export sector remains backwards. Farida Akhter, Adviser to the Ministry of Fisheries and Livestock, was present as the Chief Guest at the dialogue. Mohammad Shajahan Choudhury, President of the Bangladesh Frozen Food Exporters Association (BFFEA); Iqbal Ahmed Obe, Chairman and Managing Director, Seamark (BD) Ltd; and Md. Tariqul Islam Zaheer, Senior Vice-President of BFFEA, among others, spoke at the event. The academicians, entrepreneurs and sector experts attended the event.

Hasnat Abdullah, Chief Organiser (South) of the National Citizen Party (NCP), has said people will decide whom they want to vote for. "If they want, they can give 500 votes to someone. If they wish, they can also give 2-3 lakh votes. We will accept the final decision of the people," he said during a daylong campaign in Cumilla-4 (Debidwar) on Wednesday. Hasnat expressed his gratitude for the warm welcome he received. "Your sincerity makes me more responsible. It gives me strength to overcome obstacles and resist those trying to capture the center," he said. During the campaign, Hasnat listened to public complaints, discussed future plans, and engaged actively with youth, farmers, and local residents in markets and rural areas.

Sweden-funded Ukrainian sunflower oil has reached Rohingya communities in Bangladesh through Grain from Ukraine, a humanitarian food programme launched by the President of Ukraine. Sweden’s Ambassador to Bangladesh, Nicolas Weeks, together with Oleksandr Polishchuk, Ukraine’s Ambassador to India, and Jean-Marc Séré-Charlet, France’s Ambassador to Bangladesh, attended a handover ceremony in Cox’s Bazar on Wednesday, arranged by the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP), marking the arrival of 3,000 metric tonnes of sunflower oil from Ukraine. The delivery was made possible through a USD 7 million contribution from Sweden, which ensured the procurement and transport of Ukrainian sunflower oil to Cox’s Bazar as part of the Grain from Ukraine initiative. The oil will be distributed by WFP to Rohingya refugees, meeting the cooking oil needs of approximately one million people for three months. France is also supporting the initiative, further strengthening the shared commitment to humanitarian assistance. “This initiative is unique: it helps meet urgent food needs for Rohingya refugees in Cox’s Bazar while supporting Ukrainian farmers and families enduring the immense impact of Russia’s war of aggression. It is solidarity and collaboration in its most practical form,” said Ambassador Weeks during the ceremony. Beyond its humanitarian impact in Bangladesh, Grain from Ukraine provides direct support to Ukrainian farmers and families, helping sustain livelihoods and the agricultural economy during wartime. This dual benefit – strengthening resilience in Ukraine while addressing global hunger – underscores the initiative’s role in linking solidarity with practical impact. The handover ceremony highlights the partnership between Ukraine, Sweden, France, Bangladesh, and WFP, said a media release. By integrating Ukrainian agricultural products into global humanitarian supply chains, the initiative strengthens food security worldwide while sustaining Ukraine’s economy and farming communities under wartime conditions. In addition to the handover of Ukrainian sunflower oil, Ambassador Weeks announced the upcoming disbursement of an additional USD 2.85 million to support the provision of cleaner cooking energy to Rohingya refugees, the continued rehabilitation of the environment and enhanced green skills development for refugees and Bangladeshi host communities. These activities are part of the Safe Access to Fuel and Energy Plus, phase 2 programme (SAFE Plus 2), a joint UN programme which brings together the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), the International Organization for Migration (IOM), the UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR), and the World Food Programme (WFP), in coordination with the Government of Bangladesh. With this new contribution, Swedish support to the SAFE Plus initiative totals USD 23.85 million. In total, Sweden has supported the Rohingya refugees and Bangladeshi host communities in Cox’s Bazar with over USD 146.55 million since 2017.

Another team of specialist doctors from China has arrived in Dhaka to assist in the treatment of BNP Chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia, who is undergoing treatment at Evercare Hospital in the capital. The four-member team arrived at Evercare Hospital at 10:10 pm on Wednesday, said BNP media cell member Sayrul Kabir Khan. The doctors are Chi Jianfang, Yun Xin, Zhang Yuhui, and Meng Hong O. BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir welcomed the doctors at the hospital.  Upon their arrival, former Secretary Abdul Khalek received them at the airport. Earlier on Monday, a five-member team of specialist doctors from China Medical Team arrived in Dhaka to assist in Khaleda Zia’s treatment.  The delegation held a meeting that day with the medical board overseeing her care at Evercare Hospital. Hospital sources said the team reviewed Khaleda Zia’s current health status and discussed necessary medical measures with local doctors.  Besides, a specialist physician from the United Kingdom, Dr Richard Beale, arrived in Dhaka on Wednesday (December 03) to assist in the treatment of BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia. He reached Evercare Hospital around 10:30 am and joined the ongoing medical efforts for the ailing former prime minister. Since her admission to Evercare Hospital on November 23, Khaleda Zia has been under intensive treatment in the hospital’s Coronary Care Unit (CCU) for multiple complications affecting her liver, kidneys and heart. The medical board, led by Professor Shahabuddin Talukder, is overseeing the treatment of the BNP Chairperson with support from specialist doctors. The board includes Professor FM Siddiqui, Professor Nuruddin Ahmed, Professor AQM Mohsin, Professor Shamsul Arefin, Professor Ziaul Haque, Professor Masum Kamal, Professor AZM Saleh, retired Brigadier General Professor Saiful Islam, Dr. Zafar Iqbal, Professor AZM Zahid Hossain and Dr. Al Mamun. Specialist doctors from the UK and China have now joined the board. BNP Chairperson’s personal physician, Professor AZM Zahid Hossain, said, “The medical board for Madam is being closely monitored by specialist doctors from Johns Hopkins University in the US and the London Clinic in the UK.” He said the US-based specialists include Professor Habibur Rahman, Professor Rafiquddin Ahmed and Professor John Hamilton, while the UK team comprises Professor Dr Hamid Rob, Professor John Patrick, Professor Jennifer Cross and Dr Zubaida Rahman. “From London, the party’s acting chairman Tarique Rahman is coordinating communication with the party chairperson’s doctors around the clock,” he added.

Venezuela’s President Nicolas Maduro is running out of options for a negotiated exit from power after a short call with U.S. President Donald Trump on November 21, sources familiar with the discussion said. During the call, Maduro sought assurances for safe passage out of Venezuela along with full legal amnesty for himself and his family, the lifting of all U.S. sanctions, and the closure of an International Criminal Court case against him. He also requested sanctions relief for more than 100 Venezuelan officials accused by the U.S. of human rights violations, corruption, or drug trafficking, reports Reuters. Maduro proposed that Vice President Delcy Rodriguez oversee an interim government ahead of new elections. However, Trump rejected most of these requests during the less-than-15-minute call, while giving Maduro a one-week window to leave the country with his family. That offer has since expired, prompting Trump to declare Venezuela’s airspace closed. The details of the Friday deadline had not been previously disclosed, though Trump later confirmed the conversation had occurred without elaborating. The discussion came amid growing U.S. pressure on Venezuela, including strikes on suspected drug-smuggling vessels in the Caribbean, repeated threats to extend military operations to land, and the designation of the Cartel de los Soles, which the U.S. says includes Maduro, as a foreign terrorist organization. Maduro’s government denies all criminal allegations and accuses the U.S. of seeking regime change to control Venezuela’s natural resources, particularly oil. It remains uncertain whether Maduro can propose a new plan for safe passage. U.S. officials are reportedly weighing options but note significant disagreements and unresolved details. The Trump administration has raised its reward for information leading to Maduro’s arrest to $50 million, with $25 million each for other top Venezuelan officials, including Interior Minister Diosdado Cabello, who face U.S. indictments for alleged drug trafficking. All have denied the charges. Maduro’s government has requested another call with Trump, while he continues to assert loyalty to the Venezuelan people. Observers say that although a negotiated exit is not entirely ruled out, the Venezuelan leader’s options are increasingly narrow as U.S. pressure intensifies.

Canadian High Commissioner to Bangladesh Ajit Singh on Wednesday highlighted the importance of press freedom both for democracy and prosperity. Hosting a media and diplomacy ‘Meet and Greet’ event with the Media Freedom Coalition (MFC) at the Canada Club, he referred to what journalist Walter Cronkite – “Freedom of the press is not just important to democracy, it is democracy,” apparently reminding that a free press is not optional to a democracy. CDA and Deputy Head of Mission of the Embassy of Germany Anja Kersten and Center for Governance Studies (CGS) President Zillur Rahman also spoke at the event. The High Commissioner talked about the challenges that journalists face and said Canada proudly champions free, safe and independent journalism, a powerful force that strengthens democratic societies and protects public accountability. Through the MFC, he said they stand with journalists who courageously inform the public and defend the right to truth.

The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) on Wednesday filed a case against six former senior officials of the Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC), including its former chairman Sunil Kanti Bose, for allegedly causing a financial loss of Tk 9,010 crore to the government through criminal breach of trust and abuse of power. The accused are former BTRC chairman Sunil Kanti Bose, former vice-chairman Brig Gen (retd) Md Ahsan Habib Khan, former chairman Dr Shahjahan Mahmood, former commissioner Md Jahurul Haque, Md Rezaul Kader and Md Aminul Hasan. ACC officials said the accused, while serving at BTRC between October 2015 and January 2018, violated relevant laws, guidelines and government instructions by continuing an “experimental” facility without approval from the authorities. The move allegedly caused significant revenue losses to the state while benefiting themselves or International Gateway (IGW) operators financially. Investigators found that during a one-year experimental phase — from September 18, 2014 to September 30, 2015 — the international incoming call termination rate was set at USD 0.015 per minute instead of the approved USD 0.03. The government’s revenue share was reduced from 51.75% to 40%, while IGW operators’ share was increased from 13.25% to 20%. Although the experimental period expired, the accused unlawfully continued the facility for 28 more months (October 2015 to January 2018). ACC calls for fact-based review of Tulip Siddiq's sentencing reports As a result, the government incurred the following losses: Revenue share disparity: Tk 383.73 crore, lower call rate loss:Tk 2,941.99 crore, Loss of foreign currency earnings:Tk 5,685.01 crore (equivalent to USD 72.10 million) In total, the government suffered an estimated loss of Tk 9,010.74 crore. The ACC filed the case under Sections 409/418 of the Penal Code, Section 5(2) of the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1947, and Sections 4(2) and 4(3) of the Money Laundering Prevention Act, 2012.    

Rashed Khan, general secretary of Gono Odhikar Parishad, has warned that the Election Commission will face protests if Awami League allies and dummy candidates take part in the next national elections. He made the remarks on Wednesday evening after a road rally at Hatgopalpur Bazar in Jhenaidah Sadar Upazila. Rashed said that if Awami League members contest elections as independent candidates with money or foreign backing, the people will resist. He also warned that a movement could be formed against the interim government if it shows flexibility toward such participation. Rashed recalled the July mass uprising, saying many people, including children, were killed. He stated that Awami League members involved in past oppression will not be allowed to take part in the next elections unless they are held accountable. However, he clarified that those who have not harmed the people will not face oppression. He urged voters not to be influenced by money and promised that dummy Awami League candidates would be rejected by the public. “As soon as you see Awami League dummy candidates, you will drive them out,” he said. Rashed also prayed for the recovery of National Leader Begum Khaleda Zia, calling her a symbol of Bangladesh’s sovereignty and democracy. The rally was attended by GOP’s District President Md. Sakhawat Hossain, General Secretary Zahid Iqbal Rajan, and Jubo Odhikar Parishad Organizing Secretary Mission Ali.  

The ‘Anti-discrimination Students’ Movement’, the student organization that led the July Uprising last year, staged a demonstration protesting the killing of two young men by India’s Border Security Force (BSF) allegedly at Shibganj border in Chapai Nawabganj. The protest was held on Wednesday at around 4:30 pm in front of the Raju Sculpture on the Dhaka University campus. Speakers at the rally urged the government to take strong measures against killings along the border. They also called for the adoption of a preventive policy between the two countries to stop border-related killings. Sinthiya Zaheen Ayesha, spokesperson of ‘Anti-discrimination Students’ Movement’, said, “The lives of Bangladeshi citizens are not cheap. We demand a preventive policy between the two countries. We want an impartial international investigation into this killing.” She added, “We reject the interim government’s submissive foreign policy. We will not tolerate anyone’s dominance.” Meanwhile, the Dhaka University Central Students’ Union (DUCSU) has urged the government to take urgent steps to file a case with the International Criminal Court (ICC), accusing India of violating international law through repeated killings of Bangladeshi citizens along the border. Condemning the killing of two youths by BSF at the Shibganj border, DUCSU stated that due to the failure of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the government’s weak diplomatic stance, border killings have become a regular occurrence. In a statement issued Wednesday, DUCSU said that border killings not only violate human rights but also a serious breach of international human rights conventions and border laws. It emphasized that Bangladesh must now intensify diplomatic and legal efforts on global platforms, including the International Criminal Court, to ensure justice for such incidents. Bangladeshi man shot dead by BSF near border in Chuadanga The statement added, “Since independence, BSF has repeatedly violated international law through continuous killings of Bangladeshi citizens. Although the brutal killings of Felani or Swarna Das shook the entire world, it brought no change in the behavior of the Indian border guards.” It further said that the submissive diplomacy and repeated failures of the Bangladesh government have emboldened the BSF even more. Although India has repeatedly promised to bring border killings down to zero, the reality reflects the opposite. The statement concluded that, in addition to bilateral discussions, taking the issue to the International Criminal Court and other global forums is the only effective alternative to stopping the ongoing killings.    

Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami’s Senior Naeeb-e Ameer and former MP, Prof. Mujibur Rahman, said on Wednesday afternoon that in the past 54 years, no government has truly worked for the welfare of the people. He made the remarks at a joint rally of eight political parties at the Eidgah grounds of Rangpur Collectorate, held as part of a divisional campaign demanding a referendum before the national parliamentary elections, creating a level playing field, and fulfilling five-point demands. Prof. Rahman said, “Some governments may have worked for individuals or parties, but none have worked for humanity or the hereafter. We aim to serve the world and earn benefits in the hereafter, even if it requires lives like that of Abu Saeed. We will implement Allah’s law with our lives.” He emphasized that the Quranic law must be enacted in the next elections, urging supporters to remain united. “Justice in the country is possible only through the establishment of Islam,” he added. He also commented on the referendum, saying, “Even if a referendum is held, it will not positively affect the parliamentary elections. Yet, people must support it, those opposing the referendum have been and will continue to be defeated.” Jamaat’s Naeeb-e Ameer ATM Azharul Islam highlighted corruption as the country’s main problem, saying the nation is rich in resources but lacks honest, corruption-free leadership. Police and members of Rab have arrested a suspect in connection with the killing of Shahadat Islam Rocky, 25, a grocery shop employee who was stabbed to death in the capital’s Kamrangirchar area early Tuesday. According to police, the planned armed attack took place around 3:45am on early Tuesday in East Islamnagar. Unidentified assailants stabbed Rocky multiple times on both thighs with a sharp weapon and fled the scene. Locals rescued him after hearing his screams and took him to Dhaka Medical College Hospital, where doctors declared him dead. Family members said Rocky left home around 4pm on the previous Monday to join his work at a grocery shop. The next day (Tuesday) morning, relatives were informed that he had been found critically injured. Initial findings from the investigation suggest that Rocky, reportedly involved in local grouping and known for drug addiction, may have been targeted due to disputes arising from his identifying himself as a police source to intimidate rivals. Following a complaint filed by the victim’s father, Kamrangirchar Police Station registered a case. The investigating officer then sought assistance from RAB-10 to arrest the fugitives. Acting on intelligence and with police support, a RAB-10 team from CPSCS Lalbagh Camp conducted a raid in Chamta area under Naria Police Station in Shariatpur around 12:30am on early Wednesday and arrested Md Arman, 22, identified during the investigation as a suspect in the murder. RAB said Arman has four previous cases related to robbery and dacoity. He has since been handed over to the concerned police station.

A court in Pabna has sent a woman to jail on charges of killing eight puppies in Ishwardi upazila. The accused, Nishi Rahman, is the wife of an official at the Small Farmers Development Foundation (SFDF) in the area. She was produced before the Senior Judicial Magistrate Court-1 on Wednesday around 4:30 pm. After the hearing, Magistrate Torikul Islam ordered her to be sent to jail. Nishi Rahman was arrested by police on Tuesday night from her residence in Ishwardi municipality. The case was filed the same night by Ishwardi Upazila Livestock Officer Aklima Khatun under Section 7 of the Animal Welfare Act, 2019. Ishwardi Circle Additional Superintendent of Police Pranab Kumar, said initial investigation revealed that Nishi, annoyed by a dog’s barking, had stuffed the eight puppies into a sack and left them near a pond. However, she did not know who threw them into the water. The investigation is ongoing. Housewife arrested for drowning eight puppies in Pabna pond The mother dog, named Tom, had been living at the Upazila Executive Officer’s residence. She gave birth to eight puppies a week ago. On Monday morning, the dog was seen crying and running around, searching for her puppies. Later, Upazila Parishad employees discovered that Nishi had tied the live puppies in sacks and thrown them into the pond on Sunday night. The bodies of the puppies were recovered the next morning. Following the incident, Hasanur Rahman Nayon, an official of the Small Farmers Foundation, received a written order to leave the government quarters on Monday, December 1. They vacated the house on Tuesday afternoon.    

The Credit Rating Agency of Bangladesh Ltd. (CRAB) held its 21st Annual General Meeting on Wednesday, chaired by CRAB Chairperson Noor A. Alam Chowdhury. Sri Lanka on Wednesday thanked the government and people of Bangladesh for the generous relief support sent to the South Asian country while the Sri Lankan community in Bangladesh issued a heartfelt plea for emergency aid following the catastrophic floods and landslides. “Our heartfelt appreciation to the Government and people of Bangladesh for the generous relief support sent to Sri Lanka today,” said the Sri Lankan High Commission in Dhaka. “Your friendship and solidarity strengthen us in this challenging time,” it said as Bangladesh sent emergency humanitarian assistance to cyclone and flood-affected people in Sri Lanka. As instructed by Chief Adviser Prof Muhammad Yunus, under the coordination of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Dhaka and the supervision of the Armed Forces Division, a transport aircraft of the Bangladesh Air Force carrying emergency materials landed at Bandaranaike International Airport on Wednesday afternoon. The consignment was formally handed over by Andalib Elias, the High Commissioner of Bangladesh to Sri Lanka, underscoring the continued solidarity of Bangladesh with Sri Lanka during this challenging period. The relief consignment includes: tent, dry food, mosquito nets, torchlights, gumboots, vests, hand gloves, rescue helmets, and essential medicines. “We can extend our compassion to the Sri Lankan families who have lost everything. For decades, the bond between Sri Lanka and Bangladesh has been a testament to South Asian solidarity, as they share common values and stand together in times of need. Now, it is time for the people and institutions of Bangladesh and the community to honor that friendship, said the community.  

BNP leader Advocate Fazlur Rahman has tendered an unconditional apology after being accused of contempt of court for making disparaging remarks about the International Crimes Tribunal (ICT). Chief Prosecutor Mohammad Tajul Islam confirmed the development on Wednesday during a press briefing at the tribunal premises. He said that Fazlur Rahman has already submitted his apology to the tribunal, which is scheduled to hold a hearing on the matter on December 8. Fazlur Rahman acknowledged that his earlier remarks were made in error and expressed hope that the court would show mercy. The prosecution had earlier filed a contempt petition against him for making derogatory comments about the tribunal and its proceedings related to crimes against humanity committed during July–August. On November 30, the ICT summoned Fazlur Rahman to appear on December 8 with his professional and academic certificates, following allegations of making controversial statements regarding the tribunal and its trials. The order was issued by International Crimes Tribunal-1, chaired by Justice Golam Mortuza Majumder.
