Bangladesh’s higher education scenario is set for a major transformation as the government has approved the Dhaka Central University (DCU) Ordinance, 2026, paving the path for establishing the new university through the integration of seven major public colleges in Dhaka. The move marks the end of the colleges’ affiliation with Dhaka University (DU) and ushers in a new institutional framework aimed at addressing long-standing administrative challenges, session delays and allegations of academic discrimination that have plagued the colleges for years. Under the ordinance, the seven colleges—recently detached from DU—will now be academically affiliated with the newly established DCU while retaining their individual identities, infrastructure and administrative autonomy. Intermediate-level education in the colleges will continue under the existing system, ensuring continuity for higher secondary students. The ordinance was approved on January 22, with Chief Adviser’s Press Secretary Shafiqul Alam stating that the decision seeks to improve the quality of higher education and resolve complexities that arose from the colleges’ earlier affiliation with DU. Students stage sit-in demanding ‘Dhaka Central University Ordinance’ Affiliated Colleges, Independent University While the colleges will operate as affiliated institutions, DCU will also run its own independent academic programmes. The university will eventually have a permanent, self-contained campus, though temporary facilities—such as rented buildings or designated locations—will be used until construction is completed. The seven colleges are Dhaka College, Eden Mohila College, Government Shaheed Suhrawardy College, Kabi Nazrul Government College, Begum Badrunnesa Government Women’s College, Mirpur Government Bangla College, and Government Titumir College. Together, they currently serve nearly 200,000 students. The ordinance establishes a full administrative structure for DCU, including the offices of Chancellor, Vice-Chancellor, Senate, Syndicate and Academic Council. The President will serve as Chancellor, while the Vice-Chancellor will be appointed from a panel nominated by the Senate. The University Grants Commission (UGC) will retain oversight authority, with powers to inspect, evaluate and issue directives relating to academic, examination, research and administrative activities. Shift from DU Dhaka University formally revoked the affiliation of the seven colleges on January 27 following prolonged protests, road blockades and clashes involving students from both sides. The unrest stemmed from claims of discrimination, delayed examinations and prolonged academic sessions after the colleges were brought under DU in February 2017, following decades under the National University. According to the new ordinance, the colleges will continue as “affiliated colleges”, with full rights over their movable and immovable assets preserved. At the same time, DCU will design curricula, conduct examinations and award degrees, diplomas and certificates. Students will be admitted either to DCU’s main campus or to its affiliated colleges based on SSC and HSC results and a centrally administered admission test. School-based Academic System One of the key features of the ordinance is the introduction of a school-based academic system, replacing the traditional faculty model. Separate schools will be formed for Arts, Science, Social Sciences, Business Studies, Law and Fine Arts, each led by a Head of School. Teaching, examinations and evaluation at undergraduate and postgraduate levels in affiliated colleges will follow a uniform academic calendar and assessment framework set by the university. The ordinance defines a “school” as an integrated academic structure comprising multiple departments or disciplines. DCU will also centrally conduct MPhil and PhD programmes and provide opportunities for faculty development and advanced training. Cabinet receives final draft of ‘Dhaka Central University’ ordinance Intermediate Education Remains Unchanged Of the seven colleges, five—Dhaka College, Government Shaheed Suhrawardy College, Begum Badrunnesa Government Women’s College, Kabi Nazrul Government College and Mirpur Government Bangla College—currently offer higher secondary education. Earlier drafts of the ordinance had raised concerns among higher secondary students about the possible erosion of the colleges’ identities. Those concerns have now been addressed, with the approved ordinance clearly stating that intermediate-level education will continue under the existing system. From Protests to Policy The journey towards establishing DCU has been shaped by years of student activism. Renewed demands for a separate university gained momentum during the 2024 student movement, with students citing persistent academic delays under DU. In response, the Ministry of Education formed a four-member expert committee under the UGC to design a structural framework. Following clashes between DU and college students on January 27, steps were taken to formally detach the colleges from DU. An interim administrative arrangement was proposed, placing a principal-level administrator under UGC supervision until a full university system could be established. The name ‘Dhaka Central University’ was finalised after consultations, and on May 18, 2025, retired Dhaka College principal Prof AKM Ilias was appointed interim administrator for two years. Delays Despite Momentum Admission notices were issued in July, and results for the first undergraduate batch were published on August 26. Around 72,000 students applied for 11,150 seats across Science, Arts and Social Sciences. A draft ordinance prepared by a committee led by Prof. Mohammad Tanzimuddin Khan was released on September 24, inviting feedback from teachers, students and other stakeholders. More than 6,000 responses were submitted, triggering intense debate and divisions. On November 18, the Education Ministry announced its in-principle decision to establish DCU, promising quality education, timely examinations and improved administration. Despite completing admissions for the 2024–25 academic year and announcing that classes would begin on November 23, no classes have yet commenced. As most public universities have already been in session for months—and DU is completing admission process for the next academic year—DCU’s first batch has effectively suffered a one-year session delay without attending a single class. Meanwhile, students from the seven colleges have continued to stage road blockades demanding the final ordinance, with the most recent protest on January 15 disrupting traffic at Science Lab, Technical and Tantibazar intersections for several hours. Professor AKM Ilias, Principal of Dhaka College and administrator of seven colleges, said the launch of Dhaka Central University (DCU) will improve the academic standards of the affiliated colleges. Responding to questions about the long-standing DCU movement, which at times caused public inconvenience, he said, “Such situations arise in our country when nothing is finalised. Even if the delay is reasonable, problems occur. If the issues had been resolved earlier, these situations could have been avoided.” He added that the current BCS education cadre teachers will continue teaching at the colleges and may also join university positions either through direct recruitment exams or by transfer if they wish. The presidential notification will be issued soon. We dedicate this ordinance to four students martyred during the July uprising at Kabi Nazrul Government College.” With the ordinance now approved, stakeholders hope that Dhaka Central University will finally move from uncertainty to stability, delivering on promises of timely education, institutional autonomy and academic dignity for thousands of students in the capital.

Police recovered the body of a female student of Rajshahi University (RU) hanging from the ceiling of a house adjacent to the university area in Meherchandi of Rajshahi on Friday. The deceased was identified as Zobaida Islam Ety, a student of the Department of Social Work. Manirul Islam, officer-in-charge of Chandrima Police Station, said Zobaida had been living in a rented house in the area. Motorcycle rider killed in truck accident in Sylhet Zobaida was found hanging from the ceiling of her room on Friday evening and was later taken to the emergency department of Rajshahi Medical College Hospital, where doctors declared her dead, said RU Proctor Mahbubur Rahman. Police suspected that Ety might have committed suicide. An investigation is underway in this regard, the OC said.

Dhaka, the overcrowded capital city of Bangladesh, has ranked 4th on the list of cities with the worst air quality with an AQI index of 208 at 9:00 am on Saturday. Dhaka’s air was classified as ' very unhealthy', according to the air quality and pollution city ranking. Egypt’s Cairo, India's Delhi and Pakistan’s Lahore occupied the first, second and third spots in the list, with AQI scores of 332, 235 and 211, respectively. Air quality worsens as Dhaka tops global pollution ranking When the AQI value for particle pollution is between 101 and 150, air quality is considered ‘unhealthy for sensitive groups’, between 150 and 200 is ‘unhealthy’, between 201 and 300 is said to be 'very unhealthy', while a reading of 301+ is considered 'hazardous', posing serious health risks to residents. The AQI, an index for reporting daily air quality, informs people how clean or polluted the air of a certain city is and what associated health effects might be a concern for them. The AQI in Bangladesh is based on five pollutants: particulate matter (PM10 and PM2.5), NO2, CO, SO2, and ozone. Dhaka has long been grappling with air pollution issues. Its air quality usually turns unhealthy in winter and improves during the monsoon.

Regional Arab and Muslim governments fear that a U.S. strike on Iran would likely provoke retaliation from Tehran, potentially targeting neighboring countries or U.S. interests on their soil and causing widespread collateral damage. Saudi Defense Minister Khalid bin Salman said Friday on social media that he met in Washington with Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, Trump’s regional envoy Steve Witkoff, and Joint Chiefs Chairman Gen. Dan Caine to discuss efforts aimed at promoting regional and global stability. The appeals for restraint come as Trump has shifted his public justification for potential military action—from condemning Iran’s violent suppression of nationwide protests to focusing on preventing Tehran from advancing its nuclear program. This is despite Trump’s repeated claims that U.S. strikes in June had already destroyed Iran’s nuclear facilities. Trump signals interest in a deal Trump said Friday that he hopes to reach an agreement with Iran, but warned reporters that consequences would follow if negotiations fail. Asked whether he had imposed a deadline, Trump replied ambiguously that only Iran would know, confirming that his warnings had been directly conveyed to Iranian officials. According to two senior administration officials, Trump’s renewed emphasis on Iran’s nuclear ambitions reflects a broader strategy rather than a change in course. One official said Trump initially highlighted the protests to encourage demonstrators and to caution Tehran against further repression. Trump said Iran appeared to heed earlier warnings about executions but acknowledged that many people were still being killed. Despite this, the administration views Iran’s nuclear program as the central threat—particularly from the perspective of Israel. Officials said Trump wants to remind Iran that eliminating that risk remains the ultimate objective. Trump wrote on social media that he hopes Iran will quickly return to negotiations for a “fair and equitable deal” that ensures it never develops nuclear weapons, warning that time is running short. Another senior official emphasized that Trump retains all military options, though the White House has not confirmed whether it believes Iran is attempting to rebuild its nuclear capabilities. Iran says it is open to talks—but prepared for conflict Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said Friday during talks in Istanbul with Turkish officials that Iran is open to dialogue but that no formal negotiations with the U.S. are currently planned. He added that while Iran is prepared to negotiate, it is also ready for war. Turkey has sought to ease tensions, with President Recep Tayyip Erdogan offering to act as a mediator between Tehran and Washington during a phone call with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian earlier Friday. Trump has repeatedly highlighted the buildup of U.S. military forces in the region, including the deployment of the aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln and several guided-missile destroyers, bringing thousands of additional U.S. personnel to the Middle East. U.S. Central Command warned Iran against endangering freedom of navigation during an upcoming live-fire drill in the Strait of Hormuz, a critical route for roughly 20% of the world’s oil supply. The command said it would not tolerate unsafe behavior such as close flyovers, aggressive boat maneuvers, or weapons pointed at U.S. forces. Israeli authorities announced Friday that the pedestrian border crossing between Gaza and Egypt will reopen over the weekend, ending a prolonged closure and marking a significant development in U.S. President Donald Trump’s ceasefire initiative for Gaza. Israel’s Coordinator of Government Activities in the Territories (COGAT) said that beginning Sunday, the Rafah crossing—Gaza’s primary exit point to the outside world—will permit restricted movement of people only. The statement followed earlier comments by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Ali Shaath, who was recently appointed to lead the Palestinian administrative body overseeing Gaza’s civilian affairs, both of whom indicated the crossing would reopen soon. Although COGAT confirmed the crossing will be accessible in both directions on Sunday, Shaath described the first day as a test run, noting that regular two-way travel is expected to begin Monday. According to an official familiar with the discussions, Israel has approved the daily departure of up to 150 people, including 50 medical patients accompanied by two relatives each. Additionally, up to 50 Palestinians who left Gaza during the conflict will be allowed to return each day. The official spoke anonymously due to the sensitivity of ongoing diplomatic negotiations. Gaza’s Health Ministry estimates that around 20,000 injured or ill residents require medical treatment outside the enclave, as the territory’s healthcare system suffered severe damage during the war and can no longer provide many advanced procedures. COGAT said Israel and Egypt will jointly screen travelers using the crossing, which will be monitored by European Union border officials. Palestinians will also undergo Israeli security checks in a nearby corridor that remains under Israeli military control. The Rafah crossing has been almost entirely closed since May 2024, when Israel took control of the area, citing efforts to prevent Hamas from smuggling weapons. It was briefly reopened earlier this year to allow the evacuation of medical patients during a short-lived ceasefire. Israel had previously opposed reopening the crossing, but the recovery of the remains of the final hostage held in Gaza earlier this week removed a major obstacle. Many Palestinians inside Gaza are seeking to leave the devastated territory, while tens of thousands who fled during intense fighting are hoping to return. Renewed violence in Gaza On Friday, Palestinians mourned those killed earlier in the week in Israeli attacks, which have decreased in frequency but continue despite the ceasefire following the return of the last hostage’s remains. Funeral processions were held for three Palestinians, with mourners carrying wrapped bodies through the streets before performing Islamic burial prayers. The Israeli military said four people were killed in airstrikes in central Gaza on Friday, alleging they were armed and moving toward Israeli troops near the ceasefire boundary separating Israeli-controlled areas from much of Gaza. These deaths add to the 492 Palestinians killed since the ceasefire began in October, according to Gaza’s Health Ministry. The ministry does not differentiate between civilians and fighters but maintains casualty records considered broadly credible by United Nations agencies and independent analysts.

Venezuela’s interim leader Delcy Rodríguez announced Friday that her government is introducing an amnesty law that could result in the release of hundreds of people imprisoned for political reasons, including opposition figures, journalists, and human rights defenders. The proposal, long demanded by the U.S.-supported opposition, marks Rodríguez’s most recent compromise since she assumed power on Jan. 3 following the dramatic U.S. military operation in Caracas that removed former President Nicolás Maduro. Speaking at a recorded ceremony attended by senior judges, cabinet members, military officials, and other top authorities, Rodríguez said the National Assembly—controlled by the ruling party—would move quickly to debate the bill. She said the law is intended to mend the harm caused by years of political conflict marked by violence and extremism, restore justice, and promote peaceful coexistence among Venezuelans. Rodríguez also revealed plans to close Helicoide, a notorious Caracas detention center where independent groups have repeatedly documented torture and serious rights violations. According to her, the facility will be converted into a recreational and cultural complex serving police officers and nearby communities. The announcement was made in the presence of several officials whom former detainees and rights organizations have accused of authorizing abuses at Helicoide and other prisons. Outside the prison, relatives of inmates watched Rodríguez’s address on a mobile phone. Emotions ran high—some wept while others shouted, “Freedom! Freedom!” “God is good. God listened to us,” said Johana Chirinos, the aunt of a detainee, through tears. Opposition leader and Nobel Peace Prize winner María Corina Machado said in a statement that the measures were not voluntary but instead driven by pressure from the U.S. government. She emphasized that Venezuelans have been jailed for political reasons for periods ranging from one month to as long as 23 years. She described the government’s repression as severe, adding that once fear and repression end, authoritarian rule will collapse. According to Foro Penal, a Venezuelan prisoners’ rights organization, 711 people are currently held nationwide for political reasons, with 183 already convicted. The government has not yet made public the full text of the amnesty bill, leaving uncertainty over eligibility requirements. Rodríguez said the proposed “general amnesty law” would apply to acts linked to political violence from 1999 to the present, but would exclude those convicted of crimes such as murder, drug trafficking, corruption, or human rights abuses. Earlier this month, her administration pledged to free a significant number of detainees as a goodwill measure, though families have criticized the process for moving too slowly. “A general amnesty is positive only if it applies to all of civil society without discrimination, avoids granting impunity, and helps dismantle the machinery of political persecution,” said Foro Penal president Alfredo Romero in a social media post. The group reports that 302 prisoners have been released since Jan. 8, when National Assembly leader Jorge Rodríguez first announced plans for large-scale releases. Human rights organization Provea also criticized the lack of clarity and the gradual pace of releases, stressing that freeing political prisoners is urgent. It warned that an amnesty should not be portrayed as an act of mercy by the state. “These individuals were unlawfully detained for exercising rights guaranteed by international human rights standards, the constitution, and Venezuelan law,” Provea said.

Cracks running across the walls, rainwater seeping through the roof and chunks of plaster peeling away have become part of daily life at the Sylhet Leprosy Hospital, raising growing concerns about patient safety and the quality of care. The 135-year-old hospital, one of only three specialised government leprosy facilities in Bangladesh, is now in a visibly dilapidated state. Visits to the hospital showed that toilets without doors, dirty bathrooms and broken medical equipment have left patients and staff worried that treatment inside the building has become increasingly risky. Established in 1890, the hospital sits on 4.72 acres of land and has an official capacity of 80 beds, though only 48 are currently usable. According to hospital records, 19 patients were admitted to its three wards on January 24, while an average of 15 to 20 people seek treatment daily at the outpatient department (OPD). 250-bed Khulna hospital project withdrawn from PPP list During a recent visit, all three patient toilets were found without doors, televisions in the wards were broken, and cracks were visible in several parts of the building. Staff told the UNB correspondent that the situation worsens during the rainy season. “Rainwater enters through the roof when it rains, creating panic among both patients and employees,” said Md Monirul Islam, the hospital’s statistical officer. He also pointed out a rise in the number of identified leprosy patients in the Sylhet region in recent years. “There were 20 patients in 2020, 37 in 2021, 35 in 2022, 79 in 2023, 58 in 2024 and 58 so far in 2025.” Doctors at the hospital explained that leprosy is mildly contagious and spreads through germs transmitted by sneezing and coughing. Early symptoms include light-coloured or reddish patches on the skin that do not itch, sweat or grow hair. Other warning signs include painless lumps on the face, neck, chest or back, swelling of the earlobes, and loss of sensation in the hands, feet or eyes. Sylhet Deputy Civil Surgeon Janmejoy Dutta said the higher number of detected cases does not necessarily indicate a wider spread of the disease. “Earlier, many cases were not identified. Now awareness has increased, and people are coming forward for treatment.” He said the Health Department aims to eliminate leprosy by 2030, with both government and non-government organisations working together towards that goal. Hospital officials say the building’s condition has been deteriorating for decades. “A single floor was added to the original structure in 1963, and later a three-storey building was constructed gradually. The building is very old and in extremely poor condition. We have informed the authorities several times, but no action has been taken,” Monirul Islam alleged. Staff fears are echoed by patients. “It is a very dangerous building. A major accident could happen at any time,” warned Sabbir Ahmed, a head assistant at the hospital, noting that plaster often falls from the walls during the rainy season. A 70-year-old patient, who wished to remain anonymous, said, “My hands have deteriorated. I had to do all the tests outside because there is no proper system here.” Another patient, aged 65, who has been admitted weeks back, said, “The doctor comes only once a day. Staying in the building is frightening. Something could fall at any moment.” Outpatient Akhter Hossain said patients waiting for treatment constantly fear debris falling from the ceiling. The hospital is also struggling with acute staff shortages. Only 29 staff members are currently working against an approved strength of 50. A post for making special shoes for leprosy patients has remained vacant since 2021. A cleaner said the shortage has had a visible impact. “Earlier, even six cleaners were not enough. Now only four of us are working,” he said. Another staff member said all patient testing has stopped due to a lack of manpower, while most medical equipment remains unusable. Junior Consultant Dr Nahid Rahman described the situation as deeply concerning. “Sylhet Leprosy Hospital is the largest of its kind in Bangladesh, but its condition is extremely poor. We have repeatedly informed higher authorities, but no steps have been taken,” he lamented.    

A case has been filed against BNP candidate Mahmudul Haque Rubel and more than 290 others in connection with the killing of Jamaat leader Rezaul Karim in Jhenaigati Upazila of Sherpur. The complaint was lodged by the victim’s wife at Jhenaigati Police Station, sources from the family and police said. The incident occurred on Wednesday during a manifesto distribution program of rival candidates in Jhenaigati, part of the Sherpur-3 constituency (Sreebardi and Jhenaigati). Clashes between BNP and Jamaat supporters led to the death of Rezaul Karim.

A young man was killed on Friday afternoon after being run over by a truck in Golapganj, Sylhet, police said. The accident occurred around 3:30 p.m. near the Government MC Academy. The deceased, Shanaj Ahmed, 25, son of Makhan Mia of Sripur Rampasha village in Bishwanath, worked as a driver for a poultry farm in Sylhet city. According to eyewitnesses and police, Shanaj had attended a gathering in Phulbari Purbo Para, Golapganj, and was returning on another person’s motorcycle. Approaching the Government MC Academy, he lost control of the bike, hit a divider, and fell under an oncoming truck, dying instantly at the scene. Golapganj Model Police and fire service teams later reached the site, completed the formalities, and took the body to Golapganj Model Police Station. Golapganj Model Police Sub-Inspector Anupam confirmed the incident.

A fire broke out on Friday night in the women’s ward on the fourth floor of Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital, spreading panic among patients, attendants, and hospital staff, officials said. The incident occurred around 8:30 p.m., reportedly due to an electrical short circuit. Smoke spread quickly, prompting people to move to safer areas. Fire service units responded promptly and brought the blaze under control. No major damage was reported, and hospital services on the affected floor were temporarily disrupted. An ambulance driver was injured while helping to extinguish the fire, hospital sources said. Sylhet Metropolitan Police Deputy Commissioner Saiful Islam confirmed the incident and said the fire service acted swiftly to control the situation. The cause of the fire and extent of damage are under investigation. Additional police and Ansar personnel were deployed to ensure safety at the hospital. The situation has now returned to normal.

Munshiganj Police on Friday said they have arrested three people in connection with a staged robbery in which Tk 10 lakh sent by an expatriate was stolen. Tk 1 lakh has been recovered so far, and a motorcycle used in the fake robbery has been seized. The arrested are Shahjalal Haldar alias Saha, 38, Khokon Haldar, 32, and Iqbal Hossain, 30. Munshiganj Superintendent of Police Md. Menhazul Alam said in a press briefing on Friday that on December 28, Shahjalal Haldar withdrew the money sent by expatriate Kaiyum Khan from City Bank at Rikabi Bazar, Munshiganj Sadar. He then left for Serajabad in Tongibari Upazila with his wife and the expatriate’s sister, Halima Begum, on a battery-powered rickshaw. Police said that near Rishibari Bridge, two masked men on an unnumbered motorcycle snatched the bag containing the money. Halima Begum filed a case at Tongibari Police Station. Investigation revealed that the incident was premeditated. Shahjalal Haldar had orchestrated the fake robbery in collusion with Khokon Haldar and Iqbal Hossain. They offered no resistance at the scene and later divided the stolen money among themselves. The remaining cash is being tracked for recovery.

The murder of a mother and her daughter in Sirajdikhan, Munshiganj has been solved, police said on Friday. The victims were reportedly beaten to death by a neighbor following a dispute over playing music loudly. Police have arrested 28-year-old Ali Hossain in connection with the case and recovered the wooden stick used in the killings. Ali Hossain has confessed to the crime, Munshiganj Superintendent of Police Md. Minhazul Alam told a press briefing at the SP conference room. On the morning of January 19, the bloodied bodies of Amena Begum, 32, and her eight-year-old daughter Mariam were discovered in a rented room in South Rajanagar, Rajanagar Union. Amena Begum’s mother, Monowara Begum, filed a murder case naming unknown individuals. A 10-day investigation led by In-Charge Sanjit Kumar Ghosh of Shekhernogor Police Investigation Center identified Ali Hossain, who had been missing since the incident. Police said he had been hiding in various locations, including Gazaria and Daudkandi, often sleeping in gardens or school verandas. Hossain was arrested Wednesday night around 9:45 p.m. near the Daudkandi Bridge on the Dhaka-Chattogram highway in Gazaria. During questioning, he admitted that he killed Amena Begum after she refused to lower the volume of her mobile phone. When Mariam tried to protect her mother, he attacked and killed her as well. SP Minhazul Alam said the accused was a regular drug user and led a vagrant lifestyle. Preliminary investigation indicated a history of violent behavior.

Border guards have seized five gold bars worth Tk 77.53 lakh from a young man at the Maheshpur border in Jhenaidah. Faisal Hasan Shishir, 26, was apprehended near Khosalpur market in Maheshpur upazila while allegedly attempting to smuggle the gold into India, according to a press release sent by Assistant Director of the 58 BGB Battalion Munshi Imdadur Rahman on Friday afternoon. Shishir is the son of Munzil Torfadar of Khosalpur village under Nepa Union in Maheshpur. Acting on a tip-off, border guards set up a checkpoint on Khosalpur Bridge and conducted a search. During the operation, four gold bars and one small gold piece were recovered from Shishir’s waist. The total weight of the seized gold is 358.84 grams, with an estimated market value of Tk 77 lakh 52 thousand 412 the BGB official said. The detainee, along with his mobile phone and bicycle, has been handed over to police. Maheshpur Police Station OC Mehedi Hasan said Shishir will be presented before court, while the seized gold bars will be deposited in the government treasury through legal procedures.

Eight people were injured, including two with burns, when a gas cylinder exploded at Pasta Club Restaurant in the Wari area of Dhaka on Friday night. The incident occurred around 10:15 p.m. on the third floor of the Bata Showroom building under Wari Police Station, where the restaurant’s kitchen gas cylinder suddenly exploded. The injured were identified as Shah Alam, 45; Yunus, 30; Saurav, 25; Mehedi, 25; Mostofa, 27; Abir, 22; Jasim, 28; and Kamrul, 20. Eyewitness Yusuf Sheikh said nearby people rushed to the scene after hearing the explosion. With the help of locals and passersby, the injured were taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital around 11 p.m. Several victims are receiving treatment at the hospital’s burn unit. Dr. Harun-ur-Rashid, resident surgeon at DMCH Burn and Emergency Unit, said two burn victims were admitted, and their condition is being treated, though the extent of their injuries is not yet clear. Inspector Md. Faruk, in charge of the DMCH police camp, confirmed that the injured were brought to the emergency and burn units for treatment. Some of the injured may be discharged soon, while the two burn victims continue receiving specialized care.

Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer Dr Shafiqur Rahman on Friday said it would not be possible to build a fascism-free Bangladesh with those who do not accept the spirit of July and necessary reforms after August 5. He made the remarks while speaking as the chief guest at an election rally at Laksam Stadium in Cumilla in the evening. Dr Shafiqur urged people to support anti-fascist forces to ensure a fascism-free Bangladesh. He said, “We have no land of uncles or relatives, no Begum Para. We have only one identity, our proud Bangladesh.” He added, “In every home, a family card is held in one hand while mothers are subjected to violence with the other. Such double standards will no longer be accepted by the people. Mothers and sisters may be whipped, but the human mind can never be subdued.” He noted that the children of mothers who fought against fascism like massive rocks and the Himalayas remain awake and alert. He warned that any attempt to interfere with people’s votes will be met with resistance, as Bangladesh’s youth will rise like lions and cannot be restrained. He also cautioned, “Hands must not be extended toward anyone’s vote except your own.” At the event, speeches were also delivered by Hasnat Abdullah, chief organizer of NCP’s southern region and NCP nominee for Cumilla-4 constituency, DUCSU Vice President Shadik Kayem, and leaders of the central and local 11-party alliance.

BNP Chairman Tarique Rahman on Friday called upon all to cast a ‘Yes’ vote in the upcoming referendum to be held together with the national election on February 12 next. ​Addressing a massive public rally at the historic Collectorate Eidgah ground in Rangpur, Tarique Rahman emphasised the importance of national unity. ​“Rangpur is sacred soil, sanctified by the blood of Abu Sayed. It is our moral obligation to uphold the ‘July Charter’—the cause for which Abu Sayed, Wasim, and approximately 1,400 martyrs laid down their lives,” he said. ​The BNP chief urged people to safeguard the solidarity displayed by ordinary citizens during the August 5 uprising and remain vigilant in exercising their democratic rights on the polling day. ​Developmental Vision for Rangpur ​Highlighting his specific plans for the region, the BNP Chairman sought to dispel the image of Rangpur as a deprived area. ​Regarding industrial growth, he said BNP has a plan to transform the region by establishing agro-based industries. The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has strongly refuted social media claims alleging that its President, Aminul Islam Bulbul, is under investigation for corruption, labeling the rumors as “entirely unfounded, false, and fabricated.” To combat the spread of this misinformation, the board filed a General Diary with the Mirpur Police Station on Friday evening against the individuals and platforms responsible for circulating the claims. Earlier on Friday, rumors surfaced on various social media pages suggesting that Alex Marshall, Chair of the BCB’s Integrity Unit, was investigating Bulbul for alleged involvement in match-fixing within the Bangladesh Premier League (BPL). In a press release issued this evening, the BCB categorically denied these accusations. The statement included a quote from Marshall himself, who dismissed the social media posts as “completely untrue and fabricated allegations.” Shakib Al Hasan available for selection, says BCB “The dissemination of such misinformation is a matter of serious concern for the Bangladesh Cricket Board,” the statement read. “These actions appear to be a deliberate attempt to malign the reputation of the BCB President and undermine the integrity of the board and Bangladesh cricket.” The board confirmed that it has initiated legal measures to identify and penalize those behind the “false narrative.”

Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer Dr. Shafiqur Rahman on Friday criticized political opponents for disregarding those who helped secure the release of political prisoners and facilitated their return to the country. Speaking as the chief guest at an election rally of the 11-party alliance at Adarsha Samad High School grounds in Lakshmipur town, he said, “Some people refuse to acknowledge the contributions of those who helped prisoners gain freedom and return to the country. They call them derogatory names. This is shameful and unacceptable. A person who does not recognize help and express gratitude cannot be a good human being.” Dr. Shafiqur urged voters to support change through the upcoming election. “If you want change, you must vote ‘yes’ in the referendum. Every individual must cast their vote for change. We are united for this transformation,” he said, adding that the party aims to provide young people with skill-building opportunities instead of handouts, ensuring dignity and employment. He also criticized opponents for allegedly mistreating women, recalling past incidents and warning that those responsible would face consequences. The Jamaat Ameer promised development for Lakshmipur if the alliance forms the next government. He later distributed symbols to the 11-party candidates contesting four constituencies in the district. BNP Standing Committee member Salahuddin Ahmed on Friday said that those who persecuted the country’s Hindu community during the 1971 Liberation War have returned in a new form to contest elections, raising concerns about the safety of all citizens in Bangladesh. Speaking at an interaction meeting with Hindu and Buddhist communities in Bishwas Para, Pekuya, Cox’s Bazar, Salahuddin said, “During the great Liberation War, a religion-based group inflicted the most suffering on our Hindu brothers and sisters. Those who did not believe in independence or opposed it were responsible for this persecution.” He added that under BNP rule, people of all faiths lived in safety, and the party’s founder, the martyred President Ziaur Rahman, ensured religious freedom for all and recognized everyone residing in Bangladesh as Bangladeshi, regardless of religion. “We do not support ethnic, religious, or racial divisions. We want everyone to live together as Bangladeshis,” he said. The meeting was chaired by former general secretary of Pekuya Upazila Bishwas Para Puja Udyapan Parishad, Chandamoy Biswas Tilok. One person was killed in a head-on collision between an engine-driven human hauler and a battery-operated auto-rickshaw in Puthia upazila of Rajshahi on Friday. The accident occurred around 12:00 pm on the Puthia-Taherpur regional road in front of Dhopapara Mohanpur Madrasa. The deceased was identified as Robiul Islam, 28, son of Abdur Rahman. He was an auto-rickshaw driver from Ramkrishnapur Digha village of Naldanga upazila in Natore district. According to local sources, Robiul Islam was traveling from Puthia to Taherpur when his auto-rickshaw collided head-on with a cattle-loaded human hauler coming from the opposite direction. The rickshaw was badly damaged, and Robiul suffered severe head injuries. He was rescued in critical condition and admitted to Puthia Upazila Health Complex, where he died during treatment. Police have seized the human hauler, but the driver escaped. University student, 2 others killed in Rajshahi road crash Faridul Islam, officer-in-charge of Puthia Police Station, confirmed the incident and said no written complaint has been filed yet. “Since no complaint was filed, the body was handed over to the family”, he added.

A fire broke out on the fifth floor of a five-storey building in Chairman Bari area of Banani in the capital on Friday evening. Fire Service officials said the blaze started around 7:05 pm in a warehouse that stored cork sheets and hardboard. Four units of firefighters from the Kurmitola and Baridhara fire stations rushed to the spot after receiving the alert and reached the scene at 7:22 pm. They brought the fire under control by 7:54 pm, said Anwarul Islam, warehouse inspector at the Fire Service and Civil Defence (FSCD) headquarters media cell. The cause of the fire and the extent of the damage could not be determined immediately.

BNP Chairman Tarique Rahman on Friday evening visited the grave of Abu Sayed, a Begum Rokeya University student who was killed by police firing during the July Uprising in 2024. Tarique reached Jafarpara Babonpur village in Pirganj around 6pm and offered fateha at Abu Sayed’s grave. Later, he spoke to the members of the martyr’s family and expressed his condolences. BNP Standing Committee member Professor AZM Zahid Hossain and senior leaders of the party’s Rangpur district unit were present at the time. Speaking to reporters later, Professor Zahid said Tarique offered fateha at Sayed’s grave and prayed for the eternal peace of Abu Sayed, who was martyred during the July student–led mass uprising. “Paying respect to Abu Sayed is not only a duty of BNP, it is the responsibility of people across the country,” he said. Zahid said Abu Sayed’s sacrifice inspired millions of people to stand up against autocracy. “On July 16, 2024, Abu Sayeed stood fearlessly against repression at Begum Rokeya University. His courage showed the nation how to resist oppression, even in the face of bullets,” he said.

BNP candidate for the Sirajganj-3 (Raiganj–Tarash) constituency, Ainul Haque, has been hospitalised in Dhaka for heart treatment. He underwent surgery at Evercare Hospital in the capital on Thursday, during which two stents were placed in his heart, said Khandaker Selim Jahangir, former president of the BNP’s Tarash Upazila unit. Earlier, Ainul Haque was admitted to the hospital on Tuesday after experiencing heart-related complications. BNP-Jamaat clash in Sirajganj leaves 9 injured Jahangir said Ainul Haque has been suffering from heart problems for a long time. He is expected to remain hospitalised for at least three days and will need additional rest following his discharge. Despite his absence from the campaign trail, party leaders and activists are continuing election activities in the constituency.

National Citizen Party (NCP) Convener Nahid Islam on Friday said the party has not retreated from its own reform agenda despite joining the Jamaat-e-Islami led 11-party alliance for the upcoming national election. “The 11-party alliance is an electoral alliance. We remain committed to the ideals we stood for from the beginning,” Nahid said. He was speaking at the NCP’s election manifesto unveiling ceremony in Gulshan. “This alliance has been formed on the basis of minimum political consensus. Aligning with older parties does not mean we have stepped away from the idea of a new political settlement.” Nahid said the NCP’s separate election manifesto reflects the party’s continued commitment to building an anti-fascist and discrimination-free Bangladesh. “By announcing its own manifesto despite being part of a broader alliance, the party has demonstrated that while contesting elections together, alliance partners retain distinct political visions,” he said. Referring to his speech at the Shaheed Minar on August 5, 2024, Nahid said the mass uprising against fascism and five decades of discrimination — from which the NCP emerged — remains the foundation of the party’s politics. “Since forming the alliance, questions have been raised repeatedly. There has been criticism and debate, both for and against. But the struggle and demands for a new political settlement that we started with remain unchanged,” he said. Nahid said that if elected, the NCP would work to implement its manifesto while remaining within the alliance. “Our effort will be to realise our reform demands through this alliance. That is why NCP has announced a separate manifesto, and Jamaat-e-Islami has also released its own.” He also expressed optimism that despite missed opportunities in the past, significant reforms are still possible through a referendum. Urging people to vote ‘Yes’, Nahid said, “We have missed many chances, but at this moment there are still strong possibilities. We have secured several reform commitments that can be implemented through a referendum during the election.” The aspiration for a new political settlement, Nahid said, is a long-term struggle for the NCP and will have to be achieved through a sustained political journey.

India’s Central Board for Film Certification (CBFC) has asked the Supreme Court to hear its views if filmmakers challenge the Madras High Court order on the release of actor Vijay’s film Jana Nayagan. The Madras High Court had earlier set aside a single judge’s order that directed the board to give the movie a U/A 16+ certificate. The division bench allowed the filmmakers to revise their petition and have it heard again by the single judge if they wish. The court said the single judge acted without giving the CBFC a chance to respond. It also ruled that the petition was not maintainable, as it asked the board to issue a certificate instead of challenging its earlier order. Earlier, the Supreme Court had refused to hear the case and told the high court to decide it by January 20. By filing a caveat, the CBFC wants to ensure it can present its position if the filmmakers move the top court. A young motorcyclist was killed after being run over by a truck in Golapganj, Sylhet on Friday afternoon. The accident occurred around 3:30 pm in front of the Government MC Academy. The deceased was identified as Shanaj Ahmed, 25, son of Makhon Mia from Sripur Rampasha village in Bishwanath upazila. He worked as a vehicle driver for a poultry farm in Sylhet city. According to police and witnesses, Shanaj went to Fulbari Purbo Para in Golapganj to attend a event with colleagues. After the event, he rode another person’s motorcycle back towards Golapganj town. Reaching in front of the MC Academy, he lost control of the motorcycle, hit a road divider, and fell off. Dhaka’s rail links with Sylhet, Ctg suspended as train derails A truck coming from the opposite direction ran over him, killing him instantly. Golapganj Model Police and Fire Service personnel reached the site and after initial procedures, took the body to Golapganj Model Police Station. Anupam, sub-inspector of Golapganj Model Police Station, confirmed the incident, saying, “The body was brought to the police station.”

The second tranche of election-related assistance from India was gifted to Nepal, in presence of Minister for Finance of Nepal Rameshore Prasad Khanal. Charge d’affaires Dr. Rakesh Pandey, ceremonially handed over more than 250 vehicles to the government of Nepal, in a ceremony held in the Ministry of Finance in Kathmandu on January 29. These supplies are a part of the assistance sought by the government of Nepal, in connection with preparations for the upcoming elections in the country. In his remarks, Finance Minister Rameshore Prasad Khanal mentioned the longstanding cooperation and friendly ties between India and Nepal. More deliveries are expected to take place in batches in the coming weeks. Members of the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) have arrested three individuals who were mistakenly released from Mymensingh Central Jail after a prison officer misinterpreted their summons as bail. The accused—Anis Mia, 32, Rashedul Islam, 25, and Zakirul Islam, 28, sons of Hazrat Ali of Madhyatarati village in Tarakanda upazila—were apprehended in Ghatail upazila of Tangail around 11:30 pm on Thursday. RAB-14 commander Naymul Hasan briefed reporters at a press conference on Friday morning, saying the accused had initially been arrested on January 23 in connection with a murder case under Tarakanda police station and were handed over to the court. “On January 27, they were mistakenly released from jail due to a misinterpretation of an appearance warrant as bail, with the involvement of some jail staff. This created a huge stir,” he said. He added that following the release, RAB-14 launched an operation with CPSC and CPC-3 Tangail units and successfully apprehended the three accused. They will be sent back to jail after completing the necessary legal procedures. Senior Jail Superintendent Md. Aminul Islam said a prison official “mistakenly” released the accused. A three-member investigation committee was immediately formed, and Deputy Jailor Zakaria Imtiaz was temporarily suspended. Mymensingh Divisional Prisons Deputy Inspector General (DIG Prisons) Mohammad Touhidul Islam said a committee led by Dhaka Division-2 DIG Prisons Tipu Sultan is conducting an investigation. “If the report, expected within three working days, finds negligence on anyone else’s part, strict action will be taken,” he added.

Election Commissioner Abul Fazal Muhammad Sanaullah expressed optimism about the upcoming polls, saying he expects citizens to participate spontaneously and actively, reflecting the vibrancy of democracy. “There are only 12 days left for the election. I am very satisfied with the preparations for the Patuakhali election. I am optimistic about a beautiful and fair election,” he said while exchanging views with the Law and Order Cell and Vigilance Observation Team of Patuakhali District ahead of the National Election and Referendum on Friday. Sanaullah added that the election environment this year is significantly better than that of the last national polls. On the role of government employees during the referendum, he clarified: “Whatever is prohibited in the general election is also prohibited for the referendum. Government officials and employees cannot take sides or oppose it. Their role is limited to informing and raising awareness among the general public; they cannot advocate for a ‘yes’ or ‘no’ vote.” The Election Commissioner also issued various directives to ensure that the upcoming National Election and Referendum are conducted in a free, fair, and impartial manner. Israel will reopen Gaza’s Rafah border crossing with Egypt on Sunday, allowing limited movement of people after almost two years of closure. The Israeli military unit COGAT, which coordinates aid to Gaza, said on Friday that only people will be allowed to pass through the crossing. The Rafah crossing, Gaza’s main link to the outside world, has been mostly closed since May 2024. Israel and Egypt will screen individuals for entry and exit, with European Union border patrol agents overseeing the process. Palestinians who left Gaza during the recent conflict will be allowed to return if they get Israeli security clearance. Israel had previously resisted reopening the crossing, but the return of the last hostage from Gaza earlier this week cleared the way for the move, seen as a key step in U.S. President Donald Trump’s Gaza ceasefire plan.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has said Kyiv aims to inflict losses on Russian forces at a scale that exceeds Moscow’s monthly reinforcements, outlining a strategy he believes could weaken Russia’s military capacity and shift the balance in the nearly four-year-old war. Addressing military personnel, Zelenskyy said Ukrainian units should ensure Russian losses surpass the number of troops Moscow can deploy each month, describing 50,000 losses as the optimal level to achieve that goal. He said recent battlefield assessments showed a steady rise in Russian casualties, including killed and severely wounded soldiers no longer able to return to combat. Ukraine’s military leadership estimates tens of thousands of Russian troops were killed or incapacitated in December alone. Kyiv claims Russia has suffered more than one million casualties since launching its full-scale invasion in 2022, though such figures cannot be independently verified. An unmarried couple in Indonesia’s Aceh province has been publicly caned a total of 140 times after being found guilty of having intercourse outside marriage and consuming alcohol, offences under the region’s Islamic Sharia law. Local authorities said the 21-year-old woman collapsed and briefly lost consciousness during the punishment, which officials described as the highest number of lashes carried out in a single public caning session in the province. She was struck by female officers using a rattan cane and was later taken away by ambulance after fainting. The man involved was also caned as part of the punishment. The couple were punished on Thursday along with four others convicted of violating Sharia law, including an officer from Aceh’s Islamic police force. Under Aceh’s Islamic criminal code, intercourse outside marriage is punishable by up to 100 lashes, while alcohol consumption carries a sentence of 40 lashes. The punishments are typically carried out in public and remain common in the deeply conservative province. The Islamic police officer was caned 23 times, along with his female partner, for being alone together in a private location. Authorities said the officer would be dismissed from service. Human rights groups have long criticised public caning in Aceh, calling it cruel and degrading. Azharul Husna, Aceh coordinator for Indonesian rights group Kontras, said the punishments are not properly regulated and stressed the need for better safeguards and post-punishment care for those subjected to caning. US President Donald Trump has said Russian President Vladimir Putin agreed not to carry out attacks on Kyiv and other Ukrainian cities for about a week due to exceptionally cold weather gripping the region. Speaking at a televised cabinet meeting in Washington on Thursday, Trump said he personally asked Putin to halt strikes on Ukraine’s capital and other urban areas during the extreme cold, and that the Russian leader agreed. Trump did not specify when the pause would begin. Russia has not confirmed any such agreement. However, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky welcomed Trump’s remarks, calling them an important signal about the possibility of protecting Kyiv and other cities during the harsh winter period. Air raid sirens sounded overnight into Friday in only four Ukrainian regions close to the frontline, according to Ukrainian officials. Kyiv and other major cities were not included. Ukraine’s air force later said those areas were targeted by around 80 Russian drones and a ballistic missile. Temperatures in Kyiv were forecast to drop sharply from Thursday, falling to as low as minus 24 degrees Celsius in the coming days. Russia has intensified strikes on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure during cold spells since launching its full-scale invasion in 2022, worsening power and heating shortages. The Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces on Friday announced a fresh agreement with Syria’s central government aimed at reinforcing a ceasefire that ended weeks of clashes and setting out a roadmap for integration between the two sides. Under the deal, security forces affiliated with Syria’s Interior Ministry will deploy to the cities of al-Hassakeh and Qamishli in the Kurdish heartland, areas they were previously barred from entering, the SDF said in a statement. The agreement also initiates the process of merging SDF forces with government troops. As part of the integration, a new military formation will be created, comprising three brigades drawn from the SDF. In addition, a separate brigade of SDF fighters will be incorporated within an existing government brigade in Aleppo province. The agreement also provides for the integration of local institutions of the Kurdish-led administration in northeast Syria and their employees into state institutions. The region has operated as a de facto autonomous zone for several years. The SDF said the deal includes provisions for civil and educational rights for Kurdish people and guarantees the return of displaced residents to their home areas. According to the statement, the agreement seeks to unify Syrian territory and complete the integration process through enhanced cooperation and joint efforts to rebuild the war-torn country. There was no immediate official comment from Damascus, though Syrian state television quoted an unnamed official as confirming the agreement. The SDF lost much of its territory in northeast Syria during a government offensive after heavy fighting erupted in Aleppo on Jan 6, following months of stalled talks over a previous integration arrangement. Since the ouster of former President Bashar Assad in December 2024, Syria’s new leadership has struggled to fully assert control over a country devastated by nearly 14 years of civil war. A deal reached in March to merge the SDF with Damascus failed to gain momentum. The United States, a longtime backer of the SDF in the fight against Islamic State militants, has recently moved closer to Damascus under interim President Ahmad al-Sharaa. While Washington did not intervene militarily in the latest clashes, it pressed both sides to reach an agreement. A ceasefire brokered last week has largely held, and Friday’s announcement is seen as a step toward consolidating that truce.

Pakistan’s security forces carried out coordinated raids on two militant hideouts in the country’s southwestern Balochistan province, killing 41 insurgents in separate gunfights, the military said on Friday. According to a military statement, 30 militants were killed during the first operation in Panjgur district, while another 11 died in a second raid in Harnai district. Both operations were conducted on Thursday and no security personnel were reported killed. The military alleged that the slain militants were backed by neighboring India, though it did not provide evidence to support the claim. It said those killed had been involved in a series of attacks on security forces as well as bank robberies in the region. The statement said sanitization operations were continuing in both districts to track down and eliminate any remaining militants. President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, in separate statements, praised the security forces for what they described as successful counterterrorism operations. Pakistan has witnessed a sharp rise in militant violence in recent months, which authorities largely attribute to Baloch separatist groups and the Pakistani Taliban, also known as Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan. The TTP is a separate organization but maintains links with Afghanistan’s Taliban, who returned to power in August 2021. Balochistan, which shares a long border with Afghanistan, has for decades faced an insurgency led by separatist groups seeking independence from Pakistan’s central government. The province has also seen attacks by the Pakistani Taliban, the banned Baloch Liberation Army and other militant groups, including the Islamic State group. While officials claim the insurgency has been largely brought under control, violence continues to persist across parts of the province.

Visiting home just got easier for Bangladeshi expatriates, as a new initiative slashes one-way Saudi-Bangladesh airfares to a wallet-friendly Tk 20,500. Commerce Adviser Sk Bashiruddin, who is also Adviser to the Ministry of Civil Aviation and Tourism, said a total of 80,000 tickets will be sold under this scheme covering both Saudi Arabia and Bangladesh. While the initiative benefits expatriates, he said, it will also bring significant revenue to the state-owned Biman Bangladesh Airlines. He explained that previously, one-way empty flights were operated during Hajj flights, but this arrangement will utilize them effectively, potentially generating over 10 crore taka in additional revenue for the airline. Under this scheme, one-way fares for Madina–Dhaka and Jeddah–Dhaka routes are fixed at Tk 20,500, while return tickets on Madina–Dhaka–Madina and Jeddah–Dhaka–Jeddah routes are set at Tk 42,000. The special fares will be valid for arrivals in Bangladesh from April 18 to May 25, 2026, and for departures from Bangladesh from May 30 to June 30, 2026. Chief Adviser Prof Muhammad Yunus praised Sk Bashiruddin for the initiative, calling it a milestone in implementing expatriate-friendly policies. The interim government has noted ‘tangible progress’ in streamlining investment and trade processes, citing improved inter-agency coordination and faster decision-making as key drivers of economic competitiveness. The updates were presented at the 7th meeting of the Investment Coordination Committee, where senior policymakers and regulators reviewed reforms aimed at reducing bottlenecks, digitising services, and accelerating investment execution. The meeting was held at the Chief Adviser's Office at Tejgaon on Thursday. “Process improvements can significantly strengthen our competitiveness and directly impact livelihoods,” said Special Envoy of the Chief Adviser, Lutfey Siddiqi, who chairs the committee. “While we have limited control over external factors such as tariffs and market access, we have full control over our own policies and procedures. Efficiency gains here are immediate, tangible, and substantial.” The meeting was attended by Ashik Chowdhury, Executive Chairman of BIDA, BEZA and the PPP Authority; Bangladesh Bank Governor Dr. Ahsan Mansur; Chittagong Port Authority Chairman Rear Admiral SM Moniruzzaman; along with secretaries and heads of key ministries and agencies, said the Chief Adviser’s press wing on Friday. Reform Initiatives Among the major proposals discussed were a tenfold increase in pre-arrival customs clearance, a unified online business start-up package, 24-hour digital payment services at Chittagong Port, and a fully automated bond management system. Officials also agreed on a multi-agency mechanism to ensure approved investment proposals are translated into actual investments. The committee reviewed several recent coordination successes. The National Single Window (NSW), launched by the National Board of Revenue after years of inter-ministerial delays, has already eliminated an estimated 1.2 million physical visits to government offices in just a few months. Automated truck entry systems at Chittagong Port have reduced entry times by at least 90%, while digital tracking and cashless payments have enhanced transparency and efficiency. Investment promotion agencies—BIDA, BEZA, BEPZA and the High Tech Park Authority—are now jointly monitoring investment pipelines. Officials reported a record number of land lease agreements, with recent outreach missions to China, Turkey and South Korea leading to confirmed investment activities. Addressing Implementation Gaps The committee also flagged persistent challenges, noting that some offices continue to run parallel offline processes despite having digital systems in place, largely due to weak monitoring of user experience and system usage. Siddiqi highlighted the Bureau of Manpower, Employment and Training (BMET) as a best-practice example, citing its digital-only application and payment system supported by on-site help desks. The Chittagong Port Authority has introduced a similar “agent desk” to assist users transitioning to online platforms, according to Chairman Moniruzzaman. Next Milestones Immediate priorities include the launch of the first version of the Bangladesh Business Portal by BIDA, developed through cross-ministry and city corporation collaboration, and a pilot of the Automated Risk Management System (ARMS) at Chittagong Customs House to reduce physical cargo inspections. Referring to recent stakeholder meetings at Chittagong Customs House, Siddiqi stressed the urgency of expanding pre-arrival clearance. “The rules are already in place,” he said. “What is missing is disciplined implementation. It is unacceptable that less than 5% of cargo is pre-cleared when the figure should exceed 50%.” Participants praised the Investment Coordination Committee’s data-driven, action-oriented format, describing it as a “stylistic reform” in government operations that prioritises execution and measurable outcomes. The meeting concluded with appreciation for the collaborative approach and the concrete results delivered so far.  

BNP Chairman Tarique Rahman is scheduled to address an election rally at the Collectorate Eidgah ground in Rangpur on Friday afternoon as part of his ongoing campaign tour of the northern region. Ahead of the rally, he will visit Pirganj upazila, where he is set to pay homage at the grave of Shaheed Abu Sayed at Babanpur and enquire about the well-being of the martyr’s family members, said ABM Abdus Sattar, private secretary to the BNP chairman. Saiful Islam, convener of Rangpur District BNP and candidate for the Rangpur-6 (Pirganj) constituency, said Tarique Rahman is expected to arrive in Pirganj in the afternoon before proceeding to Rangpur city for the public meeting. Following the visit to the martyr’s grave, Tarique Rahman will attend the election rally at the Collectorate Eidgah ground, where he is expected to provide important directions regarding the country’s current political situation, the election and the future governance system. Meanwhile, district and metropolitan BNP units have completed extensive preparations to ensure the success of the visit and the rally. Preparations for the stage at the Eidgah ground began on Thursday morning, while public announcements are being made through loudspeakers across the area to ensure the presence of party leaders, activists and supporters. To maintain law and order, police have been deployed in and around the rally venue. Security surveillance has also been intensified, including the deployment of plainclothes police, said Shahajan Ali, officer-in-charge of Rangpur Metropolitan Kotwali Police Station. The venue has already been inspected, he added. Samsuzzaman Samu, convener of Rangpur Metropolitan BNP and candidate for the Rangpur-3 (Sadar and part of the city) constituency, said the district and metropolitan BNP units are working jointly to make the programme successful. He expressed hope that the Collectorate Eidgah ground would turn into a sea of people. Earlier on Thursday, Tarique Rahman arrived in Rajshahi to begin the fourth phase of his election campaign, launching a three-day tour of the northern region aimed at mobilising voters in favour of BNP and its alliance candidates. Local BNP leaders said Tarique Rahman last visited Rajshahi in 2004, when he attended a conference of union representatives.

Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer Dr Shafiqur Rahman on Friday said the party aims to build a discrimination-free Bangladesh in line with the aspirations of the people by rejecting dynastic politics and promoting merit-based leadership. “We want to abolish the zamindari system and the culture of the king’s son becoming king or the minister’s son becoming minister,” he said while addressing an election rally organised by Feni District Jamaat-e-Islami at the Feni Government Pilot High School ground. He said the 11-party alliance would work to build an equal Bangladesh where even the son of a rickshaw puller could become prime minister if he has the required ability. Dr Shafiqur Rahman said corrupt politics in the past had given rise to fascism and entrenched corruption in the country. “We want to show that politics a red card and build a new Bangladesh,” he said. He said Jamaat does not support unemployment allowances but believes in ensuring dignity through employment. Jamaat to reopen closed industries, create jobs if elected: Jamaat Ameer “Women must be respected both at home and in the workplace. If Jamaat comes to power, the honour and dignity of scholars and Qawmi madrasas will be enhanced,” he added. Dr Shafiqur Rahman alleged that the Awami League had established misrule over the past 16 years, citing incidents such as the Pilkhana massacre, the killing of Jamaat-BNP leaders and activists, and the killing of scholars and ulema. He said the people were freed from this misrule through the July 24 revolution. Recalling his visit to Feni during last year’s devastating floods, he said Abrar Fahad was killed for speaking out on issues related to the Feni River and urged the people of Feni to remember him with respect. Dr Shafiqur Rahman also promised that, if Jamaat comes to power, government medical colleges would be established in 31 districts including Feni, specialised hospitals would be set up, dams would be constructed along the Feni River, and a modern stadium would be built in the district. Calling for unity, he said candidates nominated by the 11-party alliance in Feni’s three constituencies must work together to ensure victory in building a new Bangladesh. The Jamaat Ameer also urged people to vote ‘Yes’ in the referendum. At least 16 countries have accepted Bangladesh’s invitations to send a total of 57 election observers for the country’s 13th general election and the referendum on the July Charter, both scheduled to be held concurrently on February 12. The Turkish delegation, comprising several members of parliament, will be led by Mehmet Vakur Erkul, a former Turkish ambassador to Bangladesh. The US Embassy in Dhaka has issued a security alert, urging US citizens in Bangladesh to remain vigilant, avoid demonstrations and exercise caution around large gatherings. “US citizens should remain vigilant, avoid demonstrations, and exercise caution in the vicinity of any large gatherings,” the Embassy said in a notification on Friday. Bangladesh elected Vice Chair of UN Peacebuilding Commission for 2026 Bangladesh is scheduled to hold parliamentary elections and a national referendum simultaneously on February 12, 2026. During the election period, the Embassy warned that political violence or extremist attacks may occur, with possible targets including rallies, polling stations and religious sites.

A day after hitting a record high, the prices of gold in Bangladesh fell sharply on Friday, with the Bangladesh Jewellers Association (BAJUS) cutting the rate by Tk 14,638 per bhori. In a notification, BAJUS said it has fixed the price of 22-carat gold at Tk 271,363 per bhori (11.664 grams), effective immediately. The jewellers’ body explained that the latest reduction comes following a fall in the price of pure gold (tejabi sona) in the local market. According to the revised rates, the price of 21-carat gold has been set at Tk 258,999 per bhori, 18-carat gold at Tk 222,024 per bhori, while the price of traditional gold stands at Tk 182,833 per bhori. Gold price skyrockets to Tk262,440 per bhori overnight in Bangladesh  In addition to the selling price, buyers will have to pay a mandatory 5 percent VAT set by the government and a minimum 6 percent making charge fixed by BAJUS. However, the making charge may vary depending on the design and quality of jewellery. On January 29, BAJUS had raised the price of gold by Tk 16,213 per bhori, setting the rate at Tk 286,000 — the highest ever in the country’s gold market. So far in 2026, gold prices have been adjusted 17 times, with increases on 13 occasions and decreases on four. Alongside gold, BAJUS has also reduced silver prices. The price of 22-carat silver has been cut by Tk 816 to Tk 7,757 per bhori, marking the first reduction after four consecutive hikes. Under the new rates, 21-carat silver will sell at Tk 7,407 per bhori, 18-carat at Tk 6,357 per bhori, while traditional silver has been fixed at Tk 4,782 per bhori. Chief Adviser Prof Muhammad Yunus has said the cooperation between Bangladesh and China must continue, although a new government will soon take office.  “In a few weeks, I will be out of this office and a new government will be formed, but the work between our two countries must go on,” he said during a meeting with a delegation from the China-Bangladesh Partnership Forum at the State Guest House Jamuna recently. The delegation included senior Chinese academics, investors and industry leaders from the biomedical, infrastructure, digital, and legal sectors, said the Chief Adviser’s press wing on Friday. That was a very happy moment for me,” he said. The delegation thanked Prof Yunus and discussed opportunities for collaboration in the health, infrastructure and digital sectors. Highlighting the interim government’s priorities, the Chief Adviser said health remains the top concern. “Our highest priority is healthcare—how to integrate digital technology so that doctors and patients can connect effectively, medical histories can be preserved digitally, and appointments can be accessed easily,” he said. Dr Yunus also emphasised the need for social business models in the pharmaceutical sector. “Medicines cost pennies to produce, yet are sold for dollars. We want to encourage the establishment of social business pharmaceutical companies that focus on helping people, not just profits,” he said. About the COVID-19 pandemic, Prof Yunus recalled Bangladesh’s advocacy for patent-free vaccines. “We raised our voices for patent-free vaccines and faced resistance. When the vote came, 10 countries abstained. They said rich countries would buy vaccines and donate them to poor nations. We said we don’t need gifts. People were dying while others were making money. This is a shame,” he said. Rohingya crisis not receiving due attention, repatriation only solution: Prof Yunus Prof Yunus also shared his vision of establishing a “health city” in the northern region of Bangladesh. “During my visit to China, I proposed building a 1,000-bed international hospital in northern Bangladesh. It is a poor region but strategically located near India, Nepal, and Bhutan,” he said. Dr Yunus explained that the proposed health city would include hospitals, medical colleges, research centres, vaccine production facilities, pharmaceutical industries, and medical equipment hubs. “All health-related activities would be located in one city. People from India, Nepal, and Bhutan could also benefit by accessing quality healthcare facilities there,” he added. Prof Yunus expressed his gratitude to the government of China for its continued support and cooperation. The body of a poultry businessman was recovered from a pond in Nager Bazar area of Belabo upazila on Thursday night, three days after he went missing. The deceased was identified as Azimul Qader Bhuiya, 45, from Raghab village of Bajnabaup union. Belabo Police Station’s Inspector (Investigation) Nasir Uddin said Azimul, also a Chhatra League leader of Bajnabaup Union and Belabo upazila, disappeared on Tuesday around 8:00 pm after leaving his poultry farm. The Inspector said that after a general diary was filed police began investigating the case andsearched for the missing person. Later in the night, they received information and recovered his body. Along the restless banks of the Kushiyara River in Sunamganj’s Jagannathpur upazila, a vital road is fighting a losing battle against erosion, leaving thousands of residents anxious as commuters risking their lives every day. The Jagannathpur-Barafechi road, once wide enough to accommodate steady traffic, has been reduced to a narrow strip hanging precariously over the riverbank.  With sections of the earth beneath it already eaten away, the road now teeters on the edge of collapse, creating constant tension among people living in nearby villages. During a recent visit to the area, riverbank protection work was seen underway near Barafechi Bazar, where concrete blocks are being placed in an effort to halt erosion.  But the situation remains grim just west of the project area, where the river has already bitten deeply into the land, leaving the roadway dangerously narrow. Illegal topsoil extraction threatens ‘Gaillar Haor’, croplands in Sunamganj The affected stretch serves as the only communication link between several localities and the Jagannathpur upazila headquarters.  Any disruption, residents fear, would completely sever transport and isolate communities from essential services, locals said. They said the threat feels immediate and unavoidable. Rahmat Ali, a resident of the upazila, warned that if the hanging portion of the road collapses into the river, people in the area will face severe hardship.  They urged the authorities to take urgent measures to protect the road before it is washed away entirely. For drivers, the danger is a daily reality. Expressing concern, Amin Uddin, a local driver, said they are compelled to use the road despite knowing the risks. “We know the road could fall into the river at any moment. But we have no choice. To earn a living and reach our destinations, we are risking our lives,” he said. Officials say efforts are underway, even if they are not immediately visible to passers-by. Contacted, Sheikh Farid, Jagannathpur upazila officer of the Water Development Board, said erosion protection work is also being carried out along the affected section. According to him, progress has slowed due to a shortage of sand and soil. A loggerhead sea turtle with only three flippers swam back into the Atlantic Ocean on Thursday after months of rehabilitation in Florida, drawing cheers from a bundled-up crowd and now carrying a satellite tracker to monitor her movements. The turtle, named Pyari—a Hindi word meaning “beloved”—had been recovering at the Loggerhead Marinelife Center in Juno Beach following a likely shark attack. The predator left her with severe injuries to her neck, shell, and front flippers, resulting in the amputation of most of her left forelimb. Pyari arrived at the center in November from the nearby Inwater Research Group, where staff began her care after the injuries left her in critical condition. US President Donald Trump on Thursday threatened to impose a 50 percent tariff on any aircraft sold in the United States by Canada, marking a sharp escalation in his trade dispute with Washington’s northern neighbor as tensions with Prime Minister Mark Carney intensify. Trump made the threat in a social media post, saying the move would come in response to Canada’s refusal to certify aircraft produced by Gulfstream Aerospace, which is based in Savannah, Georgia. He said the United States would retaliate by decertifying all Canadian aircraft, including jets made by Bombardier, the country’s largest aircraft manufacturer. “If this situation is not immediately corrected, I am going to charge Canada a 50 percent tariff on any and all aircraft sold into the United States of America,” Trump wrote. He added that he was “hereby decertifying” Bombardier’s Global Express business jets. According to aviation analytics firm Cirium, about 150 Global Express aircraft are currently registered in the United States and operated by 115 different owners. Dhaka, the densely populated capital of Bangladesh, ranked second among the world’s most polluted cities on Friday morning. At 8:22 am, Dhaka recorded an air quality index (AQI) score of 190 and classified it as ‘unhealthy’ as reported by IQAir. Delhi in India, Kuwait City in Kuwait, and Ulaanbaatar in Mongolia occupied the first, third, and fourth spots on the list, with AQI scores of 194, 186, and 181 respectively. According to the AQI scale, a reading between 50 and 100 is considered ‘moderate’, with generally acceptable air quality, though sensitive individuals should limit prolonged outdoor exertion. Air quality worsens as Dhaka tops global pollution ranking AQI levels of 101–150 are ‘unhealthy for sensitive groups’, 151–200 is ‘unhealthy’, 201–300 is ‘very unhealthy’, and readings above 301 are considered ‘hazardous’, posing severe health risks. The AQI, which reports daily air quality, informs residents how clean or polluted the air is and highlights potential health effects. In Bangladesh, the AQI is calculated based on five key pollutants: particulate matter (PM10 and PM2.5), nitrogen dioxide (NO2), carbon monoxide (CO), sulfur dioxide (SO2), and ozone. Dhaka has long struggled with air pollution. Air quality usually deteriorates in winter and improves during the monsoon season. Bangladesh has been elected as the Vice-Chair of the UN Peacebuilding Commission (PBC) for the year 2026.  The election of the five-member bureau of the PBC was held at the UN Headquarters in New York on Thursday. The members of the Commission during its first meeting of the 20th session elected Morrocco as Chair while Germany, Brazil and Croatia and Bangladesh were elected as Vice-Chairs. The Peacebuilding Commission is an intergovernmental advisory body that supports peace efforts in conflict-affected countries. Bangladesh needs to target visa fraud as brokers exploit social media The Commission is composed of 31 member states, elected from the General Assembly, the Security Council, the Economic and Social Council and the leading troops and financial contributing countries to the United Nations system.  Bangladesh has been a member of the Commission since its inception in 2005 and had earlier served the Commission as chair in 2012 and 2022 as vice-chair in 2013 and 2023. Bangladesh assumed charge today as Vice-Chair during the first PBC meeting of its 20th session after a brief ceremony. Addressing farmers, Tarique Rahman said Bangladesh will prosper if farmers are protected. He said the northern region produces both rice and mangoes but lacks cold storage facilities for mango preservation, adding that steps would be taken to address the issue. He said rail transport would be prioritised to help farmers send their produce to Dhaka at lower cost. He recalled that late President Ziaur Rahman had waived interest on agricultural loans up to Tk 5,000 and said they would increase that waiver to Tk 10,000. He also said agricultural cards would be gradually provided to all farmers to ensure timely supply of seeds and fertilisers, helping them strengthen their economic base and cope with natural disasters. Speaking about women’s welfare, he said family cards would be issued to ensure monthly government support for mothers’ healthcare. He said healthcare services would be expanded in rural areas so common illnesses can be treated locally. Addressing educated unemployed youths, Tarique Rahman said not everyone has to become a doctor or engineer and many can become professional athletes. He said students should be trained in sports from school level so they can earn and bring honour to the country abroad. He said many educated youths live in agricultural and industrial regions, and employment opportunities would increase through skill development training. He added that the IT sector would be prioritised and discussions have already been held with foreign companies interested in investing in Bangladesh. Home Affairs Adviser Lt Gen Md Jahangir Alam Chowdhury (retd) on Thursday asked election officials and members of law enforcement agencies to discharge their duties with utmost integrity, efficiency and professionalism. “Government officials are not members of any political party. They are salaried employees of the state, paid by taxpayers’ money. Any form of partiality or biased conduct towards a political party will not be accepted,” he said. The adviser made the remarks while speaking at a law and order coordination meeting at the Bangladesh Police Auditorium at Rajarbagh in the capital in the afternoon. The meeting was organised by the Home Ministry and the Dhaka Divisional Commissioner’s Office to ensure the smooth conduct of the 13th national parliamentary election and referendum. If evidence is found that anyone has worked in favour of a candidate or pursued a partisan agenda, the government will take departmental and strict legal action without any leniency, he warned. He also instructed officials and law enforcers to strictly avoid accepting money or any other benefits from candidates or their representatives, stressing that even accepting food would be unacceptable. Jahangir Alam said the democratic future of the country would be determined through the national election, cautioning that a flawed or non-transparent election could push the nation into uncertainty. “The role, conduct and responsibility of officials and law enforcement personnel are extremely important. I am hopeful that with collective efforts, we will be able to set a benchmark in the upcoming election that will be appreciated not only at home but also internationally,” he added. Health authorities in Spain’s Basque Country have launched an investigation after 253 patients, mostly infants, received expired doses of the childhood hexavalent vaccine, officials said Thursday. BNP Chairman Tarique Rahman on Thursday warned that a “vote-rigging conspiracy” by a party has not yet ended and urged voters to remain vigilant to protect their votes in the upcoming national election. “The conspiracy of one party has not ended yet. The Election Commission (EC) on Thursday directed all printing presses to refrain from printing any kind of posters ahead of the upcoming referendum and the 13th parliamentary election scheduled for February 12. The directive was issued following reports of the use of banned posters in election campaigns in different areas. In a notification, the Commission said it has recently been observed that contesting candidates or persons on their behalf used posters during electioneering, which is a clear violation of Rule 7(a) of the Parliamentary Election Code of Conduct for Political Parties and Candidates, 2025 and a punishable offence. “So, any registered political party, its nominated candidate, or the persons on their behalf shall conduct electioneering activities in violation of the electoral code of conduct,” the EC said. Election campaign: Code of conduct published in gazette, banning posters-drones, AI-social media misuse “The printing presses will have to abstain from printing any type of posters intended for election campaigns also,” it said. Earlier on December 11, the EC announced the schedule for holding the 13th parliamentary election and the referendum on the July National Charter (Constitutional Reform) Implementation Order simultaneously on February 12.

The Election Commission (EC) on Thursday said the government employees are not allowed to campaign in favour of either ‘Yes’ or ‘No’ in the upcoming referendum. The commission has issued the directive in a letter sent to all Returning Officers across the country. “Any person employed in the service of the Republic may inform and raise awareness among the people about the referendum. But they are strictly prohibited from calling upon people in any manner to cast votes either in favour of ‘Yes’ or ‘No’ in the referendum,” said the letter. The letter signed by EC Deputy Secretary Mohammad Munir Hossain cited that relevant provisions, section 21, of the Referendum Ordinance, 2025 and, Article 86, of the Representation of the People Order (RPO), 1972. EC to issue press cards manually alongside online for election “Such activities may influence the outcome of the referendum and would be counted as a punishable offence under Section 21 of the Referendum Ordinance, 2025 and Article 86 of the RPO, 1972,” said the letter. The EC asked the returning officers to take necessary measures in accordance with the legal provisions. Earlier on Tuesday, Election Commissioner Anwarul Islam Sarker said officials assigned to perform election duties will carry out publicity about the referendum but won’t campaign for or against any side. “Our position on the referendum is that we are encouraging people to participate in it. However, those entrusted with election duty will not legally work in favour of or against any side,” he said. The Election Commissioner said returning officers, assistant returning officers and other election officials would carry out publicity related to the referendum but would not take sides. Calling it a landmark step to safeguard public health, the Anti-Tobacco Media Alliance (ATMA) on Thursday demanded that the recently approved Smoking and Tobacco Products Usage (Control) (Amendment) Ordinance 2025 be passed in the first parliamentary session following the upcoming election. The demand was made during a meeting held at BMA Bhaban in the capital. The organization also urged all concerned stakeholders to remain vigilant against concerted disinformation campaigns conducted by the tobacco industry, intended to undermine and obstruct the legislative process. During the meeting, speakers said that the tobacco control ordinance, once enacted into law in the parliament, will prevent the new generation from initiating the use of emerging nicotine products and discourage the use of other traditional tobacco products. Speakers also said that due to the unprecedented level of interference from the tobacco industry, some of the most critical proposed provisions—including banning the sale of loose tobacco products, banning mobile sale of tobacco products, introducing a mandatory retailer licensing system to sell tobacco products, and ensuring a complete ban on corporate social responsibility (CSR) programs of tobacco companies—have been excluded from the finalized ordinance. Future policymakers must remain alert against such aggression by the tobacco industry. E-cigarettes, emerging tobacco products fully banned in Bangladesh Though tobacco, the fourth major risk factor behind premature deaths and disabilities in Bangladesh, claims nearly 200,000 lives each year in the country, the prevalence of tobacco use among adults (15 years and above) stands at 35.3 percent, they said. They added that the toll on public health and the environment inflicted by tobacco use and production causes the national economy a loss of BDT 87,000 crore, which is more than twice the size of revenue generated from the tobacco sector. European Union (EU) Ambassador to Bangladesh Michael Miller on Thursday met with Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer Dr Shafiqur Rahman, reaffirming the EU’s support for Bangladesh’s democratic transition and reform process. Dr Alam said institutions often hesitate to engage others who possess greater expertise in specific areas, even when such collaboration is necessary. “As a result, the country is deprived of the effective use of promising talent. We must break free from this mindset,” he said. PKSF leading calls for transition to agroecological farming Emphasising the need for balanced coordination between public and private initiatives for sustainable agricultural development, he added that ensuring food and nutrition security remains a shared national goal. Md Abdus Salam said the objectives of advanced agricultural practices are fourfold — better production, better nutrition, a better environment and, ultimately, a better life. He noted that BARC is continuously conducting research to achieve these goals and expressed hope that collaboration with PKSF would help expand research-based initiatives at the field level. He also said PKSF could play a complementary role to the government in implementing the ‘Transforming Bangladesh Agriculture: Outlook 2050’ strategy. Awami League must face the ongoing judicial process over the July uprising killings and seek apology if it wants to return to active politics, said Prof Ali Riaz, Special Assistant to the Chief Adviser. Speaking at a seminar titled ‘Rapture, Reform and Reimagining Democracy: Navigating the Agony of Transition’ organised by the BRAC Institute of Governance and Development (BIGD) at BRAC Centre in Mohakhali, Ali Riaz said the party has neither acknowledged the July uprising nor expressed any regret. “Sheikh Hasina still believes the July uprising was an Islamic militant movement backed by the West and meticulously designed by Prof Muhammad Yunus. With this mindset, there is no scope for making Awami League relevant in politics,” he said. July Charter a pact with people and parties, not an imposition: Ali Riaz Rejecting commonly cited estimates of Awami League’s support base as flawed and baseless, Ali Riaz said claims that the party enjoys 40 percent or even 20 percent public support lack any credible justification. “If someone cites the 42 percent turnout in the staged 2024 election, then there is nothing more to say.” He termed arguments about keeping a large number of Awami supporters outside the reform process as ‘crippled logic’, noting that the reform exercise was inclusive. “About 56,000 people shared opinions through our website and surveys were conducted in 46,000 households. These were ordinary citizens. We did not work based on whether someone was Awami League or BNP.” Explaining whether the absence of Awami League from the Consensus Commission made the dialogue less democratic, Ali Riaz said there was no practical way to involve the party. “ Can anyone give me Sheikh Hasina’s address so that I could send her a letter inviting her to the commission? Those who were around have fled with laundered money. Others are either in hiding or in jail. Under these circumstances, how could discussions take place with them?” he said. Highlighting the limitations of the interim government, Ali Riaz said the bureaucracy has become stronger than before, while the government failed to exert effective control. “The command Awami League had over bureaucrats does not exist for the interim government. Bureaucrats have taken advantage of this vacuum.” On the failure to implement many recommendations of the reform commissions, he said the government lacked either the necessary will or the required authority in different cases. “As a result, many reforms never saw the light of day.” Criticising civil society, Ali Riaz said it completely failed to work in solidarity with the interim government. Vote ‘Yes’ to curb concentration of power: Prof Ali Riaz “They aligned themselves with one political party or another and did not stand by the government even for a moment,” he said, predicting that civil society would again fail to play a meaningful role in reform efforts under the next government. Referring to the July movement, Ali Riaz said it was not a ‘revolution’ but an ‘uprising’. Although it failed to push the state decisively towards reform, he noted that significant changes are still possible through a referendum.

BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Thursday said he has never treated politics as a source of income, revealing that he sold his ancestral property to finance his political activities. “I am doing politics by selling my father’s land and houses,” he said while campaigning in Thakurgaon Sadar Upazila. He explained that the land they have had belonged to his father, Chokha Mia (Mirza Ruhul Amin), but “more than half of it is gone; I have had to sell even the plot in front of the house,” he added. Mirza Fakhrul stressed that he has never been involved in corruption. “I have never earned money through politics. My wife and children have worked very hard to study and run the family.” Describing his personal life simply, he said, “The car I drive in Dhaka is 20 years old. I have not been able to change it till now. We do not want to live depending on anyone’s charity or begging. We emphasise job opportunities and self-reliance.” Reflecting on the political climate of the past 15 years, he said people were unable to speak out, often beaten or burdened with lawsuits. “Fortunately, we have come through that difficult period.” Mirza Fakhrul 79: Eyes on the election horizon He said the time has now come for a turnaround, with a focus on employment for ordinary people. “We want to live by working. To become eligible for jobs, people need proper training,” he added. The BNP Secretary General also underscored that his party does not endorse politics of revenge. He promised that if elected, employment would be generated, an airport opened, and a medical college established. Recalling the 2001 election, he said, “You mothers and sisters made garlands from the money saved by selling eggs, chickens, and vegetables and gave them to me. You elected me, and I tried to work for you.” Highlighting his achievements as Agriculture Minister, he cited the Barendra Multi-Purpose Development Project, installation of deep tube wells, and other agricultural initiatives. Criticising Jamaat-e-Islami, he said those who opposed Bangladesh’s independence and have not apologised cannot ensure the country’s security. “Jamaat did not oppose the liberation war only in 1971. History shows they opposed Pakistan in 1947 as well,” he noted. Mirza Fakhrul said many people are unaware of this history, which is clearly documented in books. “Can a party that did not believe in the state of Bangladesh keep this country safe? If they come to power, will the people benefit?” he asked. Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) arrested a man along with a looted foreign-made pistol and 290 rounds of ammunition from the North Goran area in the capital early Thursday. The arrestee was identified as Asadul, 25, son of Marfat, a resident of Nilukachar under Kalmakanda Police Station in Netrokona district. The recovered firearm and ammunition were looted from a police station on August 5, 2024, said Sanad Barua, Senior Assistant Superintendent of Police (Media) of RAB-3. Acting on a tip-off, a RAB-3 team conducted a raid at a house owned by Azgar Ali adjacent to Haji Mosque Lane at 415/2-D, Nabinbagh in North Goran during the early hours. The Council of Advisers on Thursday approved six draft ordinances, three proposals, and one policy, including the draft Prevention of Sexual Harassment at the Workplace and Educational Institutions Ordinance 2026. The Council also decided to open a new diplomatic mission in Georgetown, Guyana, a Caribbean nation. The mission will operate at the level of Chargé d’Affaires or First Secretary, with personnel deployed from existing foreign missions. Chief Adviser’s Press Secretary Shafiqul Alam briefed reporters at the Foreign Service Academy on the outcomes of the meeting, which was chaired by Chief Adviser Prof Muhammad Yunus at his office. Alam said the Council discussed and approved 11 key agenda items. Among the approved draft ordinances are the Domestic Violence Prevention Ordinance 2026, the National Sports Council (Amendment) Ordinance 2026, the Bangladesh Animal and Animal Products Quarantine Ordinance 2026, the Narayanganj Development Authority Ordinance 2026, and the Cumilla Development Authority Ordinance 2026. The meeting also approved a proposal to declare March 23 as Bangladesh National Cadet Corps (BNCC) Day, to be observed annually. Another proposal approved at the meeting was the withdrawal of Bangladesh’s declaration submitted under Article 14(1) of the Convention against Torture and Other Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment (CAT). Chief Adviser’s Press Secretary Shafiqul Alam on Thursday expressed optimism that the security situation would improve with the gradual deployment of security forces, stating that political parties have so far shown restraint and tolerance while carrying out election campaigns. “We hope the coming days will look better with the gradual deployment of security forces. Overall situation will further improve,” he told reporters at the Foreign Service Academy in response to a question. Alam said the government believes political parties are demonstrating adequate restraint and tolerance and are engaging in healthy election campaigns. “Truly, they are abiding by electoral laws and following the code of conduct,” he said, referring to the situation ahead of the 2014 elections. Hundreds were killed and injured in violent attacks surrounding the controversial elections, the Human Rights Watch said in a new report released on April 29, 2014, quoting the Bangladeshi human rights organisations. Bangladesh’s government and members of rival political parties all bear responsibility for the violence which scarred national elections on January 5, 2014, said the Human Rights Watch at that time. “We believe there is still a sufficient level of tolerance among the political parties. However, we do not deny that a few isolated incidents have taken place,” the Press Secretary added, noting that, according to police data, four people have died since the announcement of the election schedule.   Violence Unacceptable, Deeply Regrettable With the national election only two weeks away, the government on Thursday called on all political parties, including BNP and Jamaat-e-Islami, to demonstrate responsible leadership and ensure restraint among their supporters. "Violence, intimidation, and loss of life have no place in a democratic process," said the interim government in a statement, expressing deep concerns over the recent violent incident in Sherpur that resulted in the death of a political activist of the Jamaat-e-Islami party. Any loss of life linked to violence is unacceptable and deeply regrettable, said the government. "The interim government remains committed to ensuring a peaceful, free, and fair election," according to the statement shared by the Chief Adviser's press wing. The police in Sherpur have launched an investigation into the clashes and the murder. All perpetrators will be brought to justice. Security in the district has been stepped up, the government said. All parties, leaders and campaigners must play their role in maintaining peace, respecting the rule of law, and engaging voters through peaceful and constructive means, it said. The government said the future of the nation depends on calm, discipline and democratic conduct from all sides. Innocents Won’t Be Arrested  Responding to a question, Deputy Press Secretary Abul Kalam Azad Majumder said no arrests have been made so far and efforts are underway to identify the actual individuals involved by scrutinising the available video footage. He said police will speak with the families again after the burial (scheduled for 8pm on Thursday), to know whether they are willing to file a case. If not, the police will file the case. Azad said investigations are ongoing to identify the real attackers, noting that many people were present at the scene. Reject attempts to stoke fear, exploit tensions: Shafiqul Alam He said the authorities want to ensure that no innocent person is arrested or unnecessarily harassed, while those involved in the incident will not be spared. A local leader of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami died after being injured in a clash between supporters of the BNP and Jamaat in Jhenaigati upazila of Sherpur district on Wednesday evening. Rezaul Karim, general secretary of the Sreebardi Upazila unit, succumbed to his injuries around 9:30 pm while on the way to Mymensingh Medical College Hospital, said Sherpur Additional Superintendent of Police Md Mizanur Rahman Bhuiyan.

The Election Commission (EC) on Thursday decided to withdraw the Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) and the Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Jhenaigati Upazila in Sherpur district following Wednesday’s election-related violence that left a local Jamaat-e-Islami leader dead. “The Commission has decided to withdraw the UNO and the OC. The remaining procedural steps will be completed as soon as possible,” EC Senior Secretary Akhtar Ahmed told a press briefing in the afternoon. Describing the incident as highly condemnable, Akhtar said a violent incident occurred in Sherpur on Wednesday which went against the electoral code of conduct. “There is a provision in our code of conduct that the electoral manifesto shall be read out and the election campaign shall be carried out amid coordinal environment. Unfortunately, a tragic incident occurred there yesterday,” he said. The High Court on Thursday dismissed the rule issued on a petition challenging the legality of the Chittagong Port Authority’s (CPA) ongoing process of signing an agreement with a foreign company to operate the New Mooring Container Terminal (NCT) at Chittagong Port. The bench of Justice Zafar Ahmed delivered the order after hearing arguments from lawyers on the matter. As a result, there remains no legal bar to the CPA proceeding with the agreement to hand over the operation of the New Mooring Container Terminal to a foreign operator. Additional Attorney General Anik R. Haque said the writ petitioners applied to the court of the Chamber Judge seeking a stay of the High Court verdict. The Chamber Judge issued a ‘no order’ in response to their application, thereby upholding the High Court’s verdict. Barrister Zamir Uddin Sircar, Advocate Ahsanul Karim and Barrister Mahbub Uddin Khokon represented the petitioners in the court. A bench, led by Senior Justice Fatema Najib, declared the ongoing process of the Chattogram Port Authority to sign the contract with the foreign company for operating the NCT as ultra vires, citing violations of the 2015 Public-Private Partnership (PPP) Act and the 2017 guidelines of the Governance and Transparency Committee (GTC). However, Justice Fatema Anwar disagreed and discharged the rule, rejecting the writ petition. As per procedure, the dissenting verdict was sent to the then Chief Justice for final disposal. The Chief Justice then referred the matter to a single bench led by Justice Zafar Ahmed, who conducted hearings and delivered the verdict on Thursday. On February 17, 2019, a memorandum of understanding was signed between the Chattogram Port Authority and DP World under the PPP framework for the operation of the New Mooring Container Terminal. The writ petition, filed by Mirza Walid Hossain, president of Bangladesh Jubo Arthanitibid Forum, sought a directive for a fair and competitive bidding process, citing reports in national media questioning why the terminal, which already had all infrastructures in place, was being handed over to a foreign company. The petition also raised concerns about the legality of the ongoing process of signing the agreement with the UAE-based company. The High Court initially issued a rule on July 30 last year, seeking clarification on why the ongoing process of signing the contract with the foreign company should not be declared ultra vires under the PPP Act and related guidelines. The court also asked why a fair and competitive public tender should not be ensured before appointing any operator to manage the NCT. Following hearings on the rule, the High Court issued a dissenting verdict on December 4. The port authority invested a total of Tk 2,712 crore in phases for the construction and equipment of the terminal. BNP Chairman Tarique Rahman on Thursday called on the interim government to carry out a fair and thorough investigation into the recent incident in Sherpur, stressing that his party seeks peace, not conflict. “We believe in peace. If there is peace, we will be able to implement what we promise. We do not want to get into quarrels or disputes,” he said while addressing an election rally at the Rajshahi Madrasa Ground in the afternoon. Tarique said he is not criticising anyone while standing on the stage at the rally, as criticism will not fill people’s stomachs, create jobs, or waive their agricultural loans. In an oblique reference to the clash between BNP and Jamaat activists that left one person dead, he said, “If any unwarranted incident occurs anywhere, it is the responsibility of the interim government to conduct a proper investigation.” “If any BNP member is found involved, we will fully cooperate with the investigation. If the investigation is done properly, justice must be ensured according to the country’s laws,” the BNP Chief said. Tarique said people of all religions — Muslims, Buddhists, Hindus and Christians — want to live peacefully in this country. Bangladesh Bank Governor Ahsan H Mansur on Thursday dismissed rumours surrounding the newly formed Sammilito Islami Bank, alleging that vested interests are paying individuals to provoke unrest as part of a planned smear campaign. Speaking at an emergency press briefing at the central bank headquarters in Dhaka, Mansur said organised efforts were under way to incite disorder at bank branches, including the filming of provocative videos, particularly in the Chattogram region. Reaffirming the new bank’s financial stability and continued state support, he said authorities were monitoring the situation closely and warned that law enforcement agencies would be deployed if needed. He said the government had provided ‘extraordinary support’ using public funds to stabilise the institution, stressing that the state could not shoulder the entire financial burden alone. “Burden sharing is a global practice,” Mansur said, pointing out that while some depositors received a 4% profit for 2024 and 2025 due to past losses, they had benefited from returns of as much as 12% to 13% in earlier years. From this year, depositors will receive market-based profit rates, currently set at 9.5%, he said. “In the coming days, they will receive 9.5%. What more could one ask for?” Mansur added. The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) on Thursday filed two cases against former Bhandaria Upazila Parishad Chairman Mirajul Islam and his wife Shamima Akhter on charges of acquiring wealth beyond their known sources of income and money laundering. The cases were filed with the ACC Integrated District Office in Pirojpur in the morning. Assistant Director of ACC Mohammad Monirul Islam filed the cases as complainant, while the investigations are being supervised by Deputy Director Md Aminul Islam of the ACC’s Integrated District Office, Pirojpur. The ACC found that Mirajul Islam acquired around TK 87crore immovable properties, including land, houses, flats and shops, worth Tk 36 crore 74 lakh  along with movable assets worth Tk 50 crore 61lakh including bank savings, business capital, company shares and nine vehicles. His total movable and immovable assets stood at Tk 87 crore 34 lakh while his family expenditure was calculated at Tk 29 crore 50 lakh. Thus, including family expenditure, his total assets amounted to Tk 116 croe 83 lakh, whereas his acceptable income was found to be only Tk 17 crore 71lakh. No liabilities were found in his name. The ACC alleged that Mirajul Islam illegally acquired assets worth Tk 99 crore 13 lakh beyond his known sources of income, an offence punishable under Section 27(1) of the ACC Act, 2004. The ACC further alleged that he embezzled government funds and deposited proceeds of crime amounting to 2691 crore in accounts across nine banks. Allegations against Shamima Akhter The ACC also filed a separate case against Mirajul Islam’s wife, Shamima Akhter, proprietor of Mess’s Shimu Enterprise, on similar charges. According to the case statement, Shamima is a licensed contractor who participated in tenders of the Local Government Engineering Department (LGED). The ACC alleged that she received work orders but embezzled government funds without executing the projects. It found that she acquired immovable assets worth Tk 32 crore, including family expenditure, against an acceptable income of Tk 7 crore 9 lakh. No liabilities were found in her name. Besides, the ACC said analysis of her Brac Bank account revealed deposits of Tk 122 crore 75 lakh , believed to be proceeds of crime. Of this amount, Tk 122 crore 39 lakh was transferred, converted and layered through banking channels to conceal the illegal source, constituting offences under Sections 4(2) and 4(3) of the Money Laundering Prevention Act, 2012. The ACC said eight more cases had earlier been filed against the couple over allegations of embezzlement of nearly Tk 1000 crore  by receiving work orders from LGED under contractor firms and misappropriating funds without executing development projects. Those cases are currently under investigation.

The International Crimes Tribunal-1 on Thursday issued warrants for the arrest of six people, including former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and former Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan, in a case filed over ‘Jahaj Bari’ killings in the capital's Kalyanpur area. The three-member tribunal, led by its chairman Justice Md Golam Mortuza Majumder, passed the order after accepting the chargesheet in the case. The tribunal fixed February 8 for the next hearing. Court sets Feb 2 for verdict in Rajuk plot scam case against Hasina, Tulip Earlier in the day, the investigation agency of the International Crimes Tribunal-1 submitted the chargesheet against eight people in the case, said ICT prosecutor Gazi MH Tamim. Former Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal, former IGP AKM Shahidul Haque, former DMP commissioner Asaduzzaman Mia and former SB chief Monirul Islam were among the accused in the case. Of them, IGP AKM Shahidul Haque and DMP commissioner Asaduzzaman Mia were in jail in another case. The charges of crimes against humanity were brought against the accused in connection with the killing of nine people at a house named ‘Jahaj Bari’ in Kalyanpur on July 25, 2016. According to the prosecution, nine people were confined and later shot dead in the house in the name of an anti-militancy drive. The case was filed with the International Crimes Tribunal accusing the then authorities of carrying out extrajudicial killings. On March 24 last year, ICT-1 sent former IGP AKM Shahidul Haque, former DMP Commissioner Asaduzzaman Mia, and former Deputy Commissioner of DMP’s Mirpur Division Mohammad Jasim Uddin Mollah to jail in connection with the case. Earlier, Chief Prosecutor Mohammad Tajul Islam told journalists that the tribunal’s investigation agency found that the nine youths had been arrested from different parts of the country well before the incident. Verdict in Rajuk plot scam case against Hasina, Tulip on Feb 2 Some of them were allegedly held in Detective Branch custody for two to three months. Investigators claim the victims were later brought together at the Kallyanpur house, where senior police officials arrived on the night of the incident under the pretext of a ‘block raid’. After they were shot dead, the incident was publicly described as a successful militant killing operation, he said.

Chattogram Customs House has successfully completed the largest auction in its history, selling around 2,800 tonnes of unclaimed and auctionable goods through an electronic auction process, officials said. The auction was conducted as part of a broader initiative to ease the persistent container congestion at Chattogram Port, mitigate associated security risks, ensure physical and financial safety, prevent wastage of state assets and enhance the overall operational efficiency of the country’s principal seaport. Under this initiative, Chattogram Customs House has been regularly auctioning off unclaimed and auctionable consignments stored at its auction sheds. As part of the ongoing drive, a long-stored consignment comprising ‘used dredger steel pipes, rubber hoses, fittings and accessories’ — weighing approximately 2,800 tonnes — was put up for sale through an e-auction. NBR targets faster cargo clearance, simpler customs rules, says its chairman With a no-objection clearance from the Ministry of Commerce, the auction was conducted through the National Board of Revenue’s (NBR) official e-auction website. The competitive bidding process took place on December 15, 2025, with a total of 13 bidders participating. The consignment was finally sold at the highest bid of Tk 92.75 million. Following payment of the bid value along with applicable VAT and income tax, the total realised amount stood at Tk 115.94 million. On completion of all payments, the goods were released in favour of the successful bidder, customs officials said. In terms of volume, officials said, the consignment marks the largest single auctioned cargo in the history of Chattogram Customs House. The successful auction has significantly freed up space at the customs auction shed, contributing to improved yard management and smoother cargo handling at the port. At the same time, the government has secured a substantial amount of revenue through the process, according to the officials. Customs duty on mobile phone imports, local sets reduced Customs authorities said regular disposal of unclaimed and auctionable goods through e-auction has been playing a vital role in maintaining normal port operations and reducing pressure on storage facilities. Chattogram Customs House will continue its e-auction activities to ensure timely clearance of auctionable goods and sustain the efficiency of port operations, the officials added.

The National Board of Revenue (NBR) on Thursday extended the deadline again for submitting income tax returns for individual taxpayers for the 2025–2026 tax year until February 28, 2026. The decision was taken in the public interest under the powers conferred by Section 334 of the Income Tax Act, 2023, with prior approval from the government, according to an official notification, according to an NBR order. Previously, the deadline for filing income tax returns for the concerned taxpayers was set for January 31, 2026. Meanwhile, the NBR has made online submission of income tax returns mandatory for all individual taxpayers this time. As per the order, individual taxpayers are required to submit their returns online through the NBR’s e-return portal at www.etaxnbr.gov.bd. However, considering difficulties related to registration in the e-return system, the NBR has provided a conditional relaxation. Any person who is unable to submit an income tax return online may apply for permission to submit a paper return. A turbulent 18 months at NBR, as various reform initiatives rolled out In such cases, the taxpayer must submit a written application with specific and reasonable justification to the concerned Deputy Commissioner of Taxes by February 15, 2026. Upon approval from the respective Additional or Joint Commissioner of Taxes, the taxpayer will be allowed to submit a paper-based income tax return. The move aims to promote digitalisation of the tax administration system while allowing limited flexibility for taxpayers facing genuine technical difficulties.

At least 11 people, including a schoolchild, were killed in a collision between a minibus taxi and a truck in South Africa, officials said Thursday. The accident occurred in the eastern province of KwaZulu-Natal. According to Siboniso Duma, a provincial transport department official, the fatalities were reported at the scene based on preliminary information. Garrith Jamieson, spokesperson for private paramedic service ALS Paramedics, confirmed that 11 people died and several others sustained critical injuries. The driver of the minibus was among those trapped in the wreckage. A Feni tribunal on Thursday sentenced three people to death for the killing of a schoolboy after abduction in 2024. Feni Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal Judge ANM Morshed Khan handed down the punishment. The condemned convicts are-- Ashraf Hossain Tushar, 20, Mobarak Hossain Wasim, 20, and Omar Faruk Ripat, 20. The tribunal fined Tk one lakh each, in default, to suffer, six months more in jail. According to the prosecution, Ahnaf Al Main Nashit, 10, a class IV student and son of Main Uddin Shohagh, was abducted by the convicts from Feni district town on December 8, 2024. On December 9, 2024, a general diary was lodged with Feni Model Police Station. Later, the convicts demanded Tk 12 lakh in ransom from Nashit’s father over the phone. At one stage, they strangled Nashit to death and dumped his body into a water body. High Court issues rule against CEC over contempt of court During the investigation, police arrested Tushar on suspicion of involvement in the killing. Following interrogation, police recovered the body of Nashit from a water body in Dewanganj area of the district town.

Africa's soccer body issued fines worth more than $1 million and banned Senegal's coach and Senegalese and Morocco players Wednesday following a shambolic African Cup soccer final this month that involved a walk-off protest by one of the teams, fans trying to storm the field and fights among journalists. The bans only apply to African games and not the World Cup kicking off in June that Senegal and Morocco have both qualified for. The sanctions announced by the Confederation of African Football included fines totaling $615,000 for the Senegalese soccer federation and $315,000 for the Morocco federation for unsporting and improper conduct by their players, coaching staff and supporters, among other offenses. The Jan. 18 African soccer showpiece was marred by Senegal players walking off led by coach Pape Thiaw in protest against a penalty awarded late in regulation time to host Morocco. Thiaw was banned for five African games and given an individual fine of $100,000 for bringing the game into disrepute, the African confederation said. China executed 11 members of a Myanmar-based family crime syndicate that killed 14 Chinese citizens and ran scam and gambling operations worth more than $1 billion, authorities said. The Wenzhou city Intermediate People's Court announced the execution in a statement Thursday morning. It sentenced the 11 people to death in September. They included Ming Guoping and Ming Zhenzhen, who the court found led the scam and gambling operations, as well as key group members Zhou Weichang, Wu Hongming and Luao Jianzhang. The group filed an appeal that was rejected by the court in November. The family members were detained in November 2023 when Chinese authorities exerted pressure on authorities in the border areas shared with Myanmar to crack down on scams. Scam parks have become an industrial scale business in Southeast Asia, especially Myanmar, Cambodia and Laos, where a mix of trafficked and willing labor have carried out digital scams on victims around the world. Authorities in the region face growing international pressure from China, the U.S. and other nations to address the proliferation of criminal activity.
