The government on Tuesday approved a proposal to dig five gas wells in Bhola at an estimated cost of Tk 907.29 crore to boost domestic gas production, reduce reliance on imported fuel and strengthen national energy security. It also endorsed several large-scale power distribution projects aimed at modernising and expanding electricity infrastructure in the Dhaka and Mymensingh divisions. The approvals came at a meeting of the Advisers Council Committee on Government Purchaseat the Cabinet Division Conference Room of the Bangladesh Secretariat with Finance Adviser Dr Salehuddin Ahmed in the chair. The committee approved the proposal from the Energy and Mineral Resources Division to drill five new gas wells in Bhola. These include Shahbazpur-5, Shahbazpur-7, Bhola North-3 and Bhola North-4 and Shahbazpur North East-1. The wells will be drilled through an international tender process using a one-stage, two-envelope procurement method on a turn-key basis. Bangladesh to drill 3 new gas wells as govt clears Tk 1,136cr exploration plan Following technical and financial evaluation, Sinopec International Petroleum Service Corporation of China was recommended as the responsive bidder. It is also expected to support industrial growth and ensure a more stable gas supply for power generation and other economic activities. In the same meeting, the committee reviewed and approved four major power distribution procurement proposals under a special revised project titled “Modernisation and Capacity Enhancement of BPDB Power Distribution System (Dhaka–Mymensingh Division).” The project include construction and augmentation of 12 air-insulated 33/11 kV substations on a turn-key basis, six substations at a cost of Tk 130.00 crore, another six substations costing Tk 113.82 crore. Two other approved proposals are construction and augmentation of 14 gas-insulated 33/11 kV substations, seven substations at an estimated cost of Tk 220.90 crore,  seven more substations costing Tk 207.91 crore. The committee noted that the power distribution projects would help meet rising electricity demand, reduce system losses, improve grid reliability and ensure a better quality of power supply across the Dhaka–Mymensingh division.

The upward trend in remittances sent by Bangladesh expatriates has continued in December, with receiving over US $2.42 billion in 22 days of the month. Bangladesh received $15.46 billion inward remittance so far in the current fiscal year FY 2025-26. Blessings on the remittance, the gross forex reserves of Bangladesh increased to $32.72 billion on Monday (December 18). As per the IMF standard BPM6, the forex reserves stood $28.03 billion. Bangladesh Bank Governor Dr. Ahsan H. Mansur in a discussion meeting recently said that the forex reserves may cross $35 billion by this month. Arif Hossain Khan, Executive Director and spokesperson of Bangladesh Bank (BB) said the $2.42 billion remittance figure for December 1-22 is an increase by 11.6 percent compared to the same period last year. In December of the previous year (2024), the country received around $2.17 billion in 22 days. Gross forex reserves hit $32.72 billion on strong remittances The growth is attributed to several factors, including incentives offered for sending money through legal banking channels, increased encouragement for using the formal system, and the active role of exchange houses. Remittance inflow has shown robust growth throughout the current fiscal year (FY 2025-26). From July 1 to December 22, 2025, the total remittance inflow reached $15.46billion. This represents an increase of $2.17 billion compared to the same period in the previous fiscal year (FY 2024-25), when the total stood at $13.31 billion. The year-on-year growth rate for the fiscal year to date is 16.2 percent.

What began as a tense standoff over seat sharing between the BNP and its allies is now giving way to cautious optimism, as leaders are signalling that a breakthrough has been reached, paving the way for a united front ahead of the election after days of behind-the-scenes negotiations. Talking to UNB, senior BNP and alliance leaders said negotiations over seat sharing have been concluded and a workable compromise has been reached. They, however, said a major challenge now facing BNP is how to manage internal party resistance in constituencies that may be shared or given up for allies. Though BNP has already finalised the seats it will share, the party has not officially disclosed how many seats it will leave for its partners. A BNP Standing Committee member, wishing anonymity, said the final announcement on seat sharing with allied political parties will be made very soon as the process has already been finalised. A key feature of the understanding, he said, is that some allied candidates may ultimately contest the election with BNP’s electoral symbol, the sheaf of paddy. Under the existing Election Commission rules, candidates from registered parties cannot contest polls under another party’s symbol, even if they are part of an alliance. To overcome this hurdle, the BNP leader said the party has adopted a new strategy. “Some selected candidates from allied parties will dissolve their parties or formally leave them and join BNP, enabling them to contest the election with the sheaf of paddy symbol.” He also said leaders of unregistered parties had already agreed earlier to contest the polls using the BNP symbol. Such discussions have already reached an advanced stage, as Shahadat Hossain Selim, chairman of the Bangladesh Liberal Democratic Party (BLDP), dissolved his party and joined BNP on December 8. Later, on December 22, Syed Ehsanul Huda, chairman of Bangladesh Jatiya Dal, also joined BNP after dissolving his party. Talking to UNB, Mustafa Jamal Haider of Jatiya Party (Zafar) and Dr Fariduzzaman Farhad of the National People’s Party (NPP) said their discussions with BNP have been productive and they would contest the election with the sheaf of paddy symbol. On contesting under the BNP symbol, Bobby Hajjaj of the National Democratic Movement (NDM), who has been given a signal to contest from the Dhaka-14 seat, said political realities sometimes require strategic decisions. “If I take any such step, it will be taken purely as part of political strategy. However, a BNP source said several leaders, including Mahmudur Rahman Manna, Saiful Haque, Andaleeve Rahman Partho, Zonayed Saki and Nurul Haque Nur, are not willing to resign from their parties to contest the election with the BNP symbol, as they want to run with their own party symbols. BNP senses ‘dangerous conspiracy’ against Bangladesh’s democratic transition The same source said Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) Chairman Colonel (retd) Oli Ahmed’s son, Professor Omar Farooq, and the party’s Secretary General Dr Redowan Ahmed will also contest the polls with their own party symbol. BNP is expected to leave those two seats for them. Talking to UNB, Saiful Haque said his party’s discussion with BNP over seat sharing ended with a promise of leaving the Dhaka-12 seat for him. “If BNP finally offers Dhaka-12, we will take a positive decision,” he said, adding that there is a mixed reaction within his party over seat sharing with BNP, as they expect BNP to offer more seats. Haque, however, said he will contest the polls with his party’s symbol spade. Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam Bangladesh has emerged as an important party for BNP in seat-sharing negotiations which will also contest the election with its own ‘Date Palm Tree’ symbol. BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Tuesday said the party will share four parliamentary seats with its alliance partner Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam Bangladesh for the upcoming 13th national parliamentary election. “Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam Bangladesh will contest the upcoming election with BNP on the basis of an understanding. BNP has left Nilphamari-1, Narayanganj-4, Brahmanbaria-2 and Sylhet-5 constituencies for Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam Bangladesh, where the party will contest the election with the ‘Date Palm Tree’ symbol,” Fakhrul said. The Jamiat candidates are Maulana Md Manjurul Islam Afendi in Nilphamari-1, Mufti Monir Hossain Kasemi in Narayanganj-4, Maulana Md Ubaidullah Faruq in Sylhet-5 and Maulana Junayed Al Habib in Brahmanbaria-2. Contacted, BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir said the party has already held discussions with its allies over seat sharing. “We hope the matter will be resolved within the next couple of days and announced formally,” he said. “Our understanding with alliance partners has been completed, and our bond with them has become even stronger,” Fakhrul added. Asked how many seats will be shared with alliance partners, he said the party will disclose the details in due course. “You will have to wait a little longer. Nothing can be said at this moment.” According to the Election Commission schedule, the 13th parliamentary election and referendum will be held on February 12, while the deadline for submitting nomination papers is December 29. BNP has already announced party candidates for 272 seats in two phases ahead of the 13th national parliamentary election. Sense of insecurity gripped nation ahead of Tarique’s homecoming: Abbas Of the remaining 28 seats, four have now been allocated to Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam Bangladesh as part of the alliance arrangement. Earlier, BNP confirmed former Bangladesh LDP chairman Shahadat Hossain Selim as its candidate in Laxmipur-1. A BNP leader said the party earlier announced candidates in some seats that are now to be shared with alliance partners. “It is now awkward for these candidates to step aside, as they have already been campaigning with the party symbol. In some other constituencies, the party may face strong rival candidates if those seats are shared with alliance partners,” he added.  

Bangladesh’s stock market opened on a positive note on Tuesday, the third trading day of the week, but the Dhaka Stock Exchange (DSE) failed to hold the gains by the end of the session, while the upward trend continued at the Chittagong Stock Exchange (CSE). At the DSE, the benchmark index DSEX fell by 13 points at the close. Among the other indices, the Shariah-based DSES dropped 4 points, while the blue-chip DS30 inched up by 1 point. Most stocks ended in the red, with prices of 242 companies declining against gains by 84 companies, while share prices of 63 issues remained unchanged. The turnover at the DSE increased, with shares and units worth Tk 407 crore traded during the day, up from Tk 395 crore in the previous session. Apex Foods Limited topped the DSE gainers’ list, soaring nearly 8 percent, while Premier Leasing and Finance Limited ended as the worst performer, shedding around 9 percent. Meanwhile, the bullish momentum continued at the CSE, where the overall index CASPI rose by 12 points. DSE, CSE begin sessions on positive note At the CSE, prices of 76 companies declined, while 68 advanced and 28 remained unchanged. The turnover also edged up at the port city bourse, with shares and units worth Tk 16 crore traded during the session, compared to Tk 15 crore a day earlier. Prime Bank 1st ICB AMCL Mutual Fund topped the gainers’ chart at the CSE with a 10 percent rise, while Hami Industries PLC ended at the bottom, plunging 10 percent.  

The government has approved several proposals including imports of rice, edible oil and lentils to strengthen food security and stabilise prices ahead of the holy month of Ramadan. The approvals were given at a meeting of the Advisers Council Committee on Government Purchase, on Tuesday at the Cabinet Division Conference Room at the Secretariat with Finance Adviser Dr Salehuddin Ahmed presiding. The meeting recommended two proposals from the Ministry of Food to procure a total of 100,000 metric tonnes of rice. Of this, 50,000 metric tonnes of non-basmati parboiled rice will be imported from India through the international open tender method at an estimated cost of Tk 217.53 crore while another 50,000 metric tonnes of white rice will be imported from Pakistan under a government-to-government arrangement at around Tk 241.52 crore. Officials said the rice imports would help maintain adequate public food stocks and curb market volatility during Ramadan when demand for essentials rises sharply. The Directorate General of Food will implement the procurement to ensure timely arrival of consignments and strengthen buffer stocks. To keep edible oil prices stable, the meeting also approved the procurement of 4.75 crore litres of edible oil. This includes 1 crore litres of refined rice bran oil from local sources and 3.75 crore litres of soybean oil from international sources through direct purchase methods. Govt to procure 50,000 mt of non-basmati parboiled rice, 80,000 mt fertiliser The Trading Corporation of Bangladesh is expected to distribute the oil through subsidised sales across the country. In addition, the committee approved the procurement of 10,000 metric tonnes of lentils through the national open tender method at an estimated cost of Tk 72.20 crore. The lentils will be procured in 50-kg bags and distributed through government channels to stabilise the market and support low- and middle-income consumers.

Bangladesh Bank seminar on Artificial Intelligence (AI) highlighted the growing role of AI in the financial sector and the necessity of a robust regulatory framework. The central bank announced in the seminar the formation of a seven-member team with AI specialists to monitor AI based financial transactions and banking operations. The seminar, held at the AKN Ahmed Auditorium of the Bangladesh Bank Training Academy (BBTA), brought together top regulators, IT experts, and banking leaders to outline a roadmap for AI adoption in Bangladesh. The seminar titled ‘Artificial Intelligence: Reshaping Financial Services and Its Regulation’ was held on Monday. A major highlight of the event was the announcement by Mohammad Jakir Hasan, Executive Director (ICT) of Bangladesh Bank, that the central bank has already initiated the formulation of an integrated AI policy. To lead these efforts, a specialized seven-member professional AI team has been formed within Bangladesh Bank. The upcoming policy will prioritize data security, the protection of consumer rights, and comprehensive risk management. The keynote paper was presented by Mohammad Ali, Managing Director of Pubali Bank PLC, who provided a clear roadmap and strategy for effective AI implementation in the financial sector. Md. Hanif Mia, Executive Director of BBTA and Chaired of the seminar, emphasized that while AI is a powerful tool, its success depends on responsible use. "Through proper policy, responsible use, and effective supervision, AI can make the financial sector of Bangladesh more inclusive, efficient, and stable," he stated. Among the panel discussants prof. Dr. BM Mainul Hossain, Director, IIT, University of Dhaka, stressed that a meaningful framework requires collaboration between regulators, technology users, and researchers. Md. Mahbub Karim, Director, Bangladesh Computer Council, noted that while national AI policies exist, Bangladesh Bank’s specific focus on the banking sector is a timely and essential addition. M. Rezaul Hassan, CEO, Reve Group, urged the industry to transition pilot AI projects into large-scale implementations by involving banking users more actively. Bangladesh Bank, fire service sign MoU In his closing remarks, the seminar chair called upon banks to view AI not just as a temporary project, but as a long-term strategic capability. He emphasized that banks must focus on high-quality data, skilled human resources, robust cybersecurity, and "explainable" AI systems to ensure long-term success. The event was attended by senior officials from various departments of Bangladesh Bank, members of the AI and Machine Learning implementation teams, and IT heads from various commercial banks and financial institutions.    

At least five people were killed and 10 others injured in a fierce clash between two groups over occupying Jaglar Char in Hatiya upazila of Noakhali district on Tuesday. Police said the incident occurred around 10:00 am in the char along the border of Wards 7 and 8 of Sukchar union. Three of the deceased have been identified as Samsuddin, his son Mobarak, and Alauddin, 40, son of Mohiuddin. Further details about the victims could not be gathered yet. Locals said several hundred landless families currently live on Jaglar Char, as nearly half of it is owned by the government while the rest is controlled by a private group. For years, an armed group allegedly led by Farid Member, also known as Farid Commander of Hironni union, and former chairman Mushfiq, had been controlling the char and its newly formed land. The group reportedly sold lands on the char to landless people at around Tk 20,000–30,000 per acre. On Tuesday morning, an armed group of 30-40 people, led by Kauya Kamal, Alauddin, and Nizam Member, attempted to seize control of the char. Sensing the move, supporters of Farid and Mushfiq, armed with lethal weapons, attacked their rivals, leaving four dead on the spot and several others injured. Of the injured, Alauddin was rushed to Noakhali General Hospital, where physicians declared him dead. Samsuddin, his son Mobarak, and two others from Farid and Mushfiq’s group were found dead at the scene. Officer-in-charge of Hatiya Police Md Saiful Alam said five people were killed in the clash and it took considerable time to control the situation due to the remote location of the char. Along with Coast Guard and Navy personnel, additional police forces have been deployed in the area to prevent further incidents, he added.

Finance Adviser Dr Salehuddin Ahmed said Tuesday Bangladesh manages its ties with India by keeping economic interests distinct from political rhetoric, with trade-related decisions driven by competitiveness and national interest rather than diplomacy. “Our trade policy is not driven by political considerations. If importing rice from India is cheaper than sourcing it from Vietnam or elsewhere, then it makes economic sense to buy from India,” he said while talking to reporters after a meeting of the Advisers Council Committee on Government Purchase. He said Bangladesh would import essentials such as rice from India if prices remain competitive, regardless of the prevailing political discourse between the two neighbours, mentioning that imports from alternative markets could cost Tk 10 more per kilogram. Dr Salehuddin stressed that Bangladesh has never pursued punitive trade measures against India for political reasons. “We do not believe in using trade as a tool for political retaliation. Our priority is to ensure supplies at the best possible price for our people,” he added. Referring to recent imports of onions from India, the finance adviser said delays had occurred despite surplus production in the Indian market, where farmers were reportedly unable to sell produce even at low prices. He said the issue had been addressed through direct engagement with the commerce ministry to facilitate imports in the interest of consumers. On the broader state of Bangladesh–India relations, Dr Salehuddin acknowledged that political rhetoric, particularly during periods of heightened political activity, can sometimes appear strained. He, however, maintained that such statements do not reflect the actual state of bilateral ties. “Political rhetoric is common, especially in public discourse. But that does not mean relations are deteriorating. Diplomacy involves many sensitive and nuanced aspects that are not always visible in public statements.” He dismissed concerns that relations with India had worsened, saying there was no abnormality in diplomatic or economic engagement between the two countries. “Nothing has gone bad. We are continuously working to maintain and improve relations.” Dr Salehuddin also addressed speculations that external forces might be attempting to create misunderstandings between Bangladesh and India, saying the interim government has no desire to see tensions between neighbouring countries. “We do not want any bitterness between the two nations. If anyone from outside is trying to instigate problems that is not in the interest of either country,” he said, adding that both sides are mindful of national sentiments and the need for mutual respect. He said Chief Adviser Prof Muhammad Yunus remains actively engaged in diplomatic efforts, including maintaining communication with individuals and institutions that have strong ties with India. The finance adviser also said he had personally spoken to the Indian High Commissioner, who assured him that efforts were underway to manage misunderstandings and maintain constructive engagement. “Some statements may appear in the media, and not everything can be controlled in a free environment. But that should not be interpreted as official policy,” he said. Police help Finance Adviser exit after 6 hours confined at Secretariat Highlighting Bangladesh’s regional outlook, Dr Salehuddin said the country believes strongly in regionalism and constructive engagement with all neighbours. “India is our largest neighbour and a major partner in trade, health services and many other sectors. We also maintain good relations with Bhutan and Nepal, and are gradually improving ties with Pakistan,” he added. He reiterated that Bangladesh cannot remain isolated and must work with countries in the region for shared prosperity. “Our economic and social interactions with India are extensive. These realities guide our approach, beyond temporary political narratives,” he said.    

The interim government on Tuesday reiterated that the killing of factory worker Dipu Chandra Das in Mymensingh was a heinous criminal act with no justification and no place in Bangladeshi society. Allegations, rumours, or differences of belief can never excuse violence, and no individual has the right to take the law into their own hands, the government said. The Office of the Chief Adviser confirmed that financial and welfare assistance will be provided to Dipu’s family, and that the relevant authorities will remain in close contact with them during the coming period. The Office of the Chief Adviser expressed its profound sorrow over the recent killing of factory worker Dipu and extended its deepest condolences to his family. On behalf of the interim government, Education Adviser Prof CR Abrar visited the family in Mymensingh on Tuesday to convey the government’s sympathy and assurance of support during this difficult time, said Chief Adviser’s Deputy Press Secretary Abul Kalam Azad Majumder. The government reaffirmed its unwavering commitment to the rule of law and the authorities to investigate alleged offences and to ensure justice through due process rests solely with the state. Law enforcement authorities have arrested 12 people in connection with the crime. Investigations are going on, and the interim government has directed that the case be pursued fully and without exception. “Such acts of violence will be met with the full force of the law,” said the interim government. 10 arrested for killing Dipu Chandra Das in M’singh The government said it remains fully committed to ensuring the safety, dignity and equal protection of all citizens, regardless of religion, ethnicity, or background. It called upon all communities, institutions, and leaders to reject violence, resist attempts to create division or unrest, and uphold restraint, humanity, and respect for the law. The government reiterated its resolve to protect all citizens and to ensure that justice is served.  

Masud Hasan Jamaly, an avid sports enthusiast, passed away on Monday night at the age of 91, following prolonged health complications. He was laid to rest at Azimpur Graveyard following Zuhr prayers on Tuesday, said a media release. He is survived by his wife Raushan Ara Masud , daughter Rumana Jamaly and a host of relatives. After graduating in Electrical Engineering from Ahsanullah Engineering College in 1958, Hasan Jamaly served the Water and Power Development Board (WAPDA) for nearly 30 years. He retired as Member (Generation) of the Power Development Board. He earned the distinction of being a “University Blue” in football during his student years at Ahsanullah Engineering College. He also served as General Secretary of the Bangladesh Tennis Federation.

Ahead of the Jagannath University Central Students’ Union (JnUCSU) and hall union elections, the Jagannath University Chhatra Dal and Chhatra Odhikar supported panel “Oikyoboddho Nirbheek Jobiyan” has announced a 13-point manifesto, prioritizing the assurance of hygienic food and the resolution of the accommodation crisis. The manifesto was unveiled at a press conference held at around 3:00 pm on Tuesday (December 23) in front of the Language Martyr Rafiq Building on campus. The panel’s Vice President (VP) candidate, AKM Rakib, read out the manifesto, while other candidates of the panel presented its various points sequentially. The 13-point manifesto of the Chhatra Dal and Chhatra Odhikar backed panel includes: ensuring a democratic and secure campus; short-term and long-term solutions to the accommodation crisis; renovation, expansion, modernization of the main campus infrastructure and the speedy completion of the second campus construction; improvement and expansion of transportation and commuting facilities; ensuring hygienic and nutritious food; guaranteeing quality healthcare services and health insurance; enhancing the quality of education and research; ensuring harassment-free and faster administrative services; job creation, career development, and strengthening professional networking; expansion of sports and cultural activities; protection of women students’ rights; waste management, environmental protection, and greenery development; and special initiatives for financially disadvantaged and students with special needs. JnUCSU Election: Ballot numbers of candidates published Additionally, at the press conference, three independent VP candidates announced their withdrawal from the election in support of AKM Rakib. They are Chandan Kumar Das, Rakib Hasan, and Mashruf Ahmed. Speaking at the event, they stated that there is no place for disunity in the struggle to protect the rights of Jobiyan students. Therefore, in the greater interest and with the aim of presenting strong leadership, they decided to withdraw their candidacies. They also announced their full support for Rakib, the VP candidate of the “Oikyoboddho Nirbheek Jobiyan” panel. Other candidates of the “Oikyoboddho Nirbheek Jobiyan” panel were also present at the press conference.  

Colombia will resume spraying coca crops using drones, the government announced on Monday, as it struggles with record cocaine production that has heightened tensions with the Trump administration. Justice Minister Andrés Idárraga said the drone-based fumigation programme, approved by the government, will begin on Thursday and target areas where criminal gangs and rebel groups force farmers to cultivate coca, the raw material for cocaine. He said the use of drones would reduce risks to security forces operating in dangerous and remote regions. Colombia halted aerial fumigation in 2015 after the World Health Organization classified glyphosate, the herbicide used in spraying, as a probable carcinogen. Environmental groups had also warned that spraying from small aircraft polluted water sources, damaged legal crops and exposed rural communities to harmful chemicals. Following the ban, authorities expanded manual eradication campaigns carried out by soldiers. However, coca cultivation continued to grow, particularly in isolated areas protected by armed groups and sometimes surrounded by land mines. According to the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime, coca was cultivated on an estimated 261,000 hectares in Colombia in 2024, nearly double the area recorded in 2016. Idárraga said the drones would operate no more than 1.5 metres from targeted plants to avoid spraying water sources and legal crops. Each drone can destroy about one hectare of coca every 30 minutes, making the method both controlled and efficient, he added. The idea of using drones for coca eradication was first proposed in 2018 but stalled due to political and institutional disagreements. President Gustavo Petro’s left-leaning government initially rejected forced eradication, arguing that impoverished farmers lacked viable alternatives. This year, however, the government has toughened its stance as drug-funded rebel groups stepped up attacks and refused to sign peace agreements. The United States has long criticised Colombia for suspending aerial fumigation. In September, the Trump administration added Colombia to a list of countries failing to cooperate in the fight against drugs for the first time in nearly 30 years, threatening military and economic assistance. Washington has also imposed sanctions on Petro and warned of possible land strikes against drug traffickers. Petro has rejected US accusations, saying Colombian security forces are seizing record amounts of cocaine even as production remains at historic highs.  

National Citizen Party (NCP) Convener Nahid Islam on Tuesday said his party supports restoring the civic and political rights of ordinary supporters of Awami League. “Those who support a fascist party may have committed a moral crime, but if they were not involved in mass killings during the July Uprising. NCP wants their civic and political rights to be restored,” Nahid said while speaking at the ‘Star Election Dialogue: Your Party, Voters’ Questions’ at the Bangladesh-China Friendship Conference Centre in the capital. He said BNP and Jamaat are competing to secure Awami League votes, with members of the ousted party openly joining them, but there has been no solution on the Awami League issue yet. “If the Awami League problem is not resolved, it will continue to resurface. In that case, a ‘Truth and Reconciliation Commission’ should be formed, and the political and civic rights of Awami League supporters should be restored on the condition that they seek forgiveness,” Nahid said. Calling for the dissolution of the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB), Nahid said, “RAB must be dissolved. We have been demanding its dissolution from the very beginning. Alongside abolishing RAB, institutions like the DGFI must also be brought under accountability.” On the upcoming election, he said, many are viewing it solely as a national election, but the referendum must also be kept in mind, stressing that the July Uprising must not be compromised under any circumstances. Referring to the implementation of the July Charter, Nahid said, “We were forced to make compromises in many parts of the charter. Many things had to be accepted in light of reality. But the commitment to uphold the charter that has been formulated cannot be violated.”

Bolivian miners and union-organised workers staged protests across the country on Monday against the government’s decision to scrap long-standing fuel subsidies, as a strike called by the Central Union of Workers began amid worsening economic pressures. Miners marched through central La Paz while demonstrations were held in other cities, though several major trade groups, including transport workers, stayed away. Some union leaders said they accepted the subsidy removal, which they described as inevitable after nearly two decades. President Rodrigo Paz, who took office on Nov 8, ended the fuel subsidy maintained by previous left-wing governments for more than 20 years. An emergency decree last week raised gasoline prices from about 53 cents per litre to roughly $1 per litre. “The country is sick and must be healed,” Paz said during a televised town hall meeting on Sunday, adding that the subsidy was costing the state $10 million a day and benefiting fuel smugglers. Business groups backed the move, saying it would help ease dollar shortages and allow firms to import goods and capital more easily. Imports of gasoline and diesel, costing up to $3 billion annually, have drained foreign currency reserves and deepened Bolivia’s worst economic crisis in four decades following the decline in natural gas exports. Some unions traditionally aligned with left-wing leaders, including miners and coca growers, went on strike demanding the subsidy be restored. Police in La Paz blocked access to the central square housing government offices, while roadblocks were reported in six of Bolivia’s nine regions. “We will continue this struggle until the decree eliminating the subsidy is repealed,” mining leader Andrés Paye said, accusing the government of favoring business interests over the poor. Transport unions did not join the strike after the government agreed to allow duty-free imports of auto parts and mandated a 20 percent increase in the minimum wage. Political analyst Carlos Cordero said the union-led protests were partly aimed at demonstrating strength ahead of next year’s local elections, but the limited turnout suggested weakening influence. “In many sectors, there is a conviction that the adjustment was necessary,” he said.  

Sudan’s Prime Minister Kamil Idris on Monday presented a comprehensive peace initiative to the UN Security Council aimed at ending the nearly 1,000-day war with the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF), while the United States urged both sides to immediately accept a humanitarian truce. Idris, head of Sudan’s transitional civilian government, said his plan calls for a UN-, African Union- and Arab League-monitored ceasefire, the withdrawal of RSF troops from all occupied areas, their placement in supervised camps, and full disarmament. Sudan descended into chaos in April 2023 after a power struggle between the military and the RSF erupted into widespread fighting, including mass killings, rapes, and ethnically motivated violence, which the UN and international rights groups classify as war crimes and crimes against humanity. Observers said the RSF is unlikely to accept Idris’s plan, which would effectively strip the paramilitary force of its power. Idris emphasized that his proposal is “homemade — not imposed” and called on the 15-member Security Council to back it. “This initiative can mark the moment when Sudan steps back from the edge,” he said, urging the council to act as a “partner in recovery.” US Deputy Ambassador Jeffrey Bartos, speaking before Idris, reiterated the Trump administration’s call for an immediate humanitarian truce and urged both parties to accept it without preconditions. Bartos condemned atrocities committed by both the Sudanese Armed Forces and the RSF, saying the perpetrators must be held accountable. UAE Ambassador Mohamed Abushahab, part of the US-backed Quad mediators, stressed that unilateral efforts by either side are unsustainable and warned that a humanitarian truce must be followed by a permanent ceasefire and a path toward civilian rule. UN Assistant Secretary-General for political affairs Khaled Khiari highlighted growing council concerns, condemning countries that continue supplying weapons to the warring parties and urging both sides to de-escalate. “The backers of both sides must use their influence to help stop the slaughter, not to cause further devastation,” he said. The war in Sudan has killed over 40,000 people, according to UN estimates, and has created the world’s largest humanitarian crisis, displacing more than 14 million people while spreading famine and disease.  

President Donald Trump on Monday warned Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro against “playing tough” as the US Coast Guard stepped up efforts to intercept sanctioned oil tankers in the Caribbean, part of the Republican administration’s escalating pressure campaign on Caracas. Trump, joined by top aides including Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, said he is prepared to further intensify the four-month campaign, which began to curb the flow of illegal drugs from Venezuela but has since expanded. “If he wants to do something, if he plays tough, it'll be the last time he'll ever be able to play tough,” Trump said, while announcing plans for a new large Navy warship. The Coast Guard continued a second day of pursuit of a sanctioned tanker the administration claims is part of Venezuela’s “dark fleet” used to evade US sanctions. The vessel is reportedly under a false flag and subject to a US judicial seizure order. This marks the third tanker targeted; previous seizures included the Panama-flagged Centuries and Skipper tankers. Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem said the operations aim to send a global message that Maduro’s alleged illegal activities “cannot stand” and that the US will defend its interests. Meanwhile, Russia began evacuating families of diplomats from Venezuela amid concerns over rising tensions, while Venezuelan Foreign Minister Yván Gil said Russian counterpart Sergey Lavrov reaffirmed support for Caracas against the US blockade of sanctioned tankers. On Venezuelan beaches near the El Palito refinery, residents noted the stark contrast with past years. Once bustling with multiple tankers and festive celebrations, the area now sees fewer vessels and families struggling with rising food prices. The Venezuelan National Assembly, controlled by Maduro’s party, on Monday approved a measure criminalizing acts linked to tanker seizures, with penalties of fines and up to 20 years in prison for offenses such as promoting or participating in “acts of piracy or blockades.” Under Trump’s orders, the Defense Department continues strikes on vessels alleged to carry drugs toward the US, with at least 105 people killed in 29 strikes since September, prompting criticism from lawmakers and human rights groups over possible extrajudicial killings.  

A former close aide to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has accused the premier of directing him to devise a plan to avoid responsibility for the October 2023 Hamas attack that triggered Israel’s ongoing war in Gaza. Eli Feldstein, Netanyahu’s former spokesperson, who faces trial over allegedly leaking classified information to the press, made the claim during an extensive interview with Israel’s Kan news channel Monday night. Critics have long accused Netanyahu of refusing to accept accountability for the deadliest attack in Israel’s history, but details of his actions immediately after the assault remain scarce. Netanyahu has consistently resisted an independent state inquiry. Feldstein said in the interview that “the first task” he received from Netanyahu after Oct. 7, 2023, was to suppress calls for accountability. He recalled Netanyahu asking, “What are they talking about in the news? Are they still talking about responsibility?” and instructing him to craft responses to counter the media pressure. Feldstein added that Netanyahu appeared “panicked” and that aides later advised him to avoid using the word “responsibility” in public statements. On Oct. 7, 2023, Hamas-led militants killed around 1,200 people in southern Israel and took 251 hostages to Gaza. Israel’s subsequent war has killed nearly 71,000 Palestinians, according to Gaza’s Health Ministry, which reports that about half of the victims were women and children. Netanyahu’s office dismissed Feldstein’s claims as “a long series of mendacious and recycled allegations made by a man with clear personal interests trying to deflect responsibility from himself,” according to Hebrew media reports. Feldstein’s remarks follow his indictment for allegedly leaking classified military information to a German tabloid to improve public perception of Netanyahu after six hostages were killed in Gaza last August. He is also a suspect in the “Qatargate” scandal, accused along with another close aide of receiving money from Qatar while serving the prime minister.

France’s divided parliament on Tuesday debated an emergency bill aimed at preventing a US-style government shutdown next week, after negotiations on the 2026 budget broke down. President Emmanuel Macron and his Cabinet met Monday night to present the short draft law, intended “to ensure the continuity of national life and the functioning of public services,” including tax collection and transfers to local authorities based on the 2025 budget, the Cabinet said. Lawmakers in the National Assembly made several amendments to the bill and are expected to vote late Tuesday, followed by the Senate. Despite deep divisions among Marine Le Pen’s far-right National Rally, left-wing forces, and Macron’s centrist minority government, the bill is likely to pass. The next challenge is creating a full 2026 budget and avoiding a new political crisis. Macron is keen to reduce France’s large deficit to 5% and restore investor confidence after political deadlock worsened by last year’s snap elections. Finance Minister Roland Lescure told BFM television Tuesday, “We need a budget as fast as possible so that we can move on. The longer the temporary budget lasts, the more it costs.” France’s high public spending on welfare, healthcare, and education, combined with a heavy tax burden, leaves revenues insufficient to cover costs. Prime Minister Sebastien Lecornu, who resigned and was reappointed this fall, is expected to address the nation Tuesday on the budget situation. Earlier this month, Lecornu’s minority government secured parliamentary approval for a key healthcare budget bill, but suspended Macron’s signature pension reform, which aimed to raise the retirement age from 62 to 64.    

The National Board of Revenue (NBR) on Tuesday announced that all online value-added tax (VAT)–related activities will now be conducted through the eVAT System following the rebranding of the existing iVAS platform. In a press release, the NBR said the decision was taken to eliminate confusion caused by the similar pronunciation of iVAS (VAT automation system) and iBAS++, the government’s integrated budgeting and accounting system. To ensure greater clarity for taxpayers, businesses and other stakeholders, the iVAS System has been formally renamed as the eVAT System, while all functions, services and operational processes will remain unchanged. The NBR said the eVAT System will serve as the single digital platform for a wide range of VAT-related services, including online VAT registration, electronic submission of VAT returns, and all A-Challan and e-payment–based transactions. NBR launches pilot digital system to monitor truck movement at land ports The system also allows manufacturers to submit input-output coefficients for VAT revenue assessment through Mushak 4.3, a key compliance requirement. In addition, the eVAT System facilitates real-time VAT collection through PKI software–based applications, helping strengthen transparency and efficiency in revenue mobilisation, the revenue authority said.  

A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) has been signed between the Fire Service and Civil Defence (FSCD) Directorate and Bangladesh Bank to ensure rapid fire emergency response at the central bank’s headquarters. The signing ceremony took place at the Bangladesh Bank headquarters on Tuesday. Md. Saleh Uddin, Deputy Director (Dhaka Division) of the Fire Service, and Md. Riyad Farzand, Joint Director of Bangladesh Bank, signed the agreement on behalf of their respective organizations. Under this MoU, a facility functioning as a "Satellite Fire Station" will be established within the premises of the Bangladesh Bank Headquarters. To ensure immediate action during fire incidents, FSCD will station a dedicated team and equipment at the site permanently. A total of 13 Fire Service personnel of various ranks will be deployed at the bank, supported by a fire engine (pump) and necessary rescue gear.

Police have arrested 11 more people in connection with the attack, vandalism, looting and arson at the offices of Prothom Alo and The Daily Star in the capital’s Karwan Bazar area, raising the total number of arrests to 28. Of the latest arrestees, nine were arrested on Monday during raids conducted by the Detective Branch police in different areas in the city. The remaining two were arrested by Tejgaon police during the same period, DMP Deputy Commissioner (Media) Talebur Rahman said on Tuesday afternoon. The arrestees area Abdur Rahman, 30; Md Jannatul Naim, 21; Md Faisal, 24; Qari Muaz Bin Abdul Rahman, 33; Jubayer Hossain, 21; Md Almas Ali, 29; Julfikar Ali Sourav, 22; Niaz Mahmud, 28; Mohammad Mainul Islam, 22; Md Hashem, 26; and Arafat Yasin, 29. According to DB sources, a group of miscreants carried attack on the two newspaper offices on the night of December 18, taking advantage of unrest in Shahbagh and Karwan Bazar areas following the death of Osman Hadi, a spokesperson of Inquilab Moncho. The attackers vandalised the premises, looted valuables from the Prothom Alo office and later set fire to parts of the building before moving on to attack The Daily Star office at around 10:30 pm, the sources said. Police have collected CCTV footage from the scenes and launched multiple drives to identify and arrest those involved, they added. Two separate cases were filed with Tejgaon Police Station in connection with the incidents. Legal proceedings against the arrested people are underway, police said.

Jahangirnagar University (JU) has published the results of the 2025–2026 academic year undergraduate (honours) first-year admission tests for the ‘B’, ‘C’, and ‘E’ units, on Tuesday afternoon. The results were released through a notice on the university’s official website. According to the notice, the results have been prepared based on a shift-wise merit list. Following previous years’ practice, admissions and migration processes will be conducted according to shift-based merit rankings derived from the published results, it said . The university administration also stated that detailed information regarding the admission tests and results can be accessed on JU’s admission portal at ‘ju-admission.org’. The 2025–2026 first-year undergraduate admission tests at JU began on December 21 and will continue until December 29.

Police recovered the body of a male newborn, aged around one day, from a lane in Chandni Ghat area of Chawk Bazar in Dhaka capital on Tuesday afternoon. The newborn, found in an unconscious state wrapped in black plastic, was rushed to Dhaka Medical College Hospital where physicians declared him dead. Sub-inspector Ashraful of Chawk Bazar police said they collected CCTV footages from the area and trying to identify those responsible. The body has been sent to the morgue for autopsy and legal action will be taken accordingly, he said.

The International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) on Tuesday framed charges against former premier Sheikh Hasina and 16 others including former and current army officers in a case over enforced disappearance and torture at the RAB’s Taskforce for Interrogation (TFI) cell during the Awami League regime. A three-member bench -1 headed by Chairman Justice Md Golam Mortuza Mozumder passed the order at noon. The trial in the case began formally through the framing of charges. Chief Prosecutor Md Tajul Islam, prosecutors Gazi MH Tamim, Shaikh Mahdi and others stood for the state while lawyers representing the arrested and fugitive accused were also present in the court. Rejecting the petitions submitted by the defence seeking discharge, the court framed charges against all the accused and ordered the trial to begin. Police produced 10 arrested army officers before the tribunal amid the tight security. They are former RAB Additional Director General Brig Gen Md Jahangir Alam, Brig Gen Tofayel Mostafa Sarwar, Brig Gen Md Kamrul Hasan, Brig Gen Md Mahabub Alam, Col KM Azad, Col Abdullah Al Momen, Col Anwar Latif Khan (on pre-retirement leave), former RAB Intelligence Wing Director Col Md Mashiur Rahman, Lt Col Saiful Islam Sumon and Lt Col Md Sarwar Bin Kashem. Trial begins against Hasina, 5 ex-DGFI chiefs over enforced disappearances, torture The fugitive accused are Sheikh Hasina, her former defence adviser Major General (retd) Tarique Ahmed Siddique, former Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal, former Inspector General of Police Benazir Ahmed, former RAB Director General M Khurshid Hossain, former RAB chief Barrister Harun-or-Rashid and former RAB director Lt Col (retd) Md Khairul Islam. The tribunal was initially scheduled to frame charges on December 21 but lawyer Mansurul Haque Chowdhury sought a hearing on behalf of accused Tofayel, Kamrul and Mashiur Jewel, requesting additional time. The tribunal later deferred the order by two days, fixing Tuesday for the decision. Earlier, on October 8, the ICT-1 issued arrest warrants for 30 people, including Sheikh Hasina, her security adviser and five former DGFI chiefs, in two separate cases over allegations of enforced disappearance and torture at Joint Interrogation Cells (JIC) and TFI cells during the then AL rule.

Mob attacks on leading media outlets and cultural centres in Bangladesh are deeply alarming and must be investigated promptly and effectively by the government and the perpetrators brought to justice without delay, a UN expert said on Tuesday. The interim government has ‘largely followed the previous patterns of impunity, normalising attacks and threats without consequences’ for the perpetrators. The arson and vandalisation of the offices of The Daily Star and Prothom Alo and Chhayanaut cultural centre as well as the attack on the editor of New Age occurred as mass protests broke out across the country after Sharif Osman Hadi, a prominent youth leader of the July 2024 uprising, died from gunshot wounds inflicted by assailants in broad daylight. “I strongly condemn the targeted killing of an inspiring leader as well as the orchestrated mob violence against independent journalists and artists which followed the announcement of his death,” said Irene Khan, the Special Rapporteur on the freedom of expression and opinion. “The weaponisation of public anger against journalists and artists is dangerous at any time, and especially now as the country prepares for elections. It could have a chilling effect on media freedom, minority voices and dissenting views with serious consequences for democracy,” Khan said. “The mob attacks did not emerge in a vacuum but are the consequences of the failure of the interim Government to address impunity and uphold media and artistic freedom,” she said. “Over the past year, freedom of expression, especially media freedom, has come under significant pressure in Bangladesh from both State and non-State actors, online and offline.” Since 5 August 2024 hundreds of journalists have been arrested on politically motivated, dubious charges of murder, terrorism and other serious crimes and many have been arbitrarily detained for prolonged periods. Several journalists have been killed, with the most recent case occurring last week. In a string of incidents in recent months, journalists, editors, political commentators, cartoonists and satirists, as well as cultural organisations and women’s groups have faced threats, hostility and violence from non-state actors. “When hate speech and smear campaigns endanger the safety and reputation of media outlets, editors, journalists, artists and civil society leaders, and no corrective action is taken by the government or social media platforms, then it is only a matter of time before the words translate into violence,” the Special Rapporteur said. “I call on the government to investigate the killing of Hadi and the attacks on media outlets promptly, impartially, transparently and hold perpetrators to account with full due process,” she said. The expert called on the government to act rapidly to put in place effective protection and prevention measures to safeguard civil society, including journalists in the lead up to elections. “If the interim government is to live up to its promise to deliver safe and fair elections, it must uphold the rights to freedom of expression and peaceful assembly and ensure the that journalists, human rights defenders, civil society leaders, political candidates,  women and minorities are able to exercise their fundamental rights without fear of reprisals,” Khan said. The expert is in contact with the government about this issue.

Hypertension is increasingly shifting from high-income countries to low- and middle-income nations including Bangladesh, posing a serious public health challenge, speakers said at a seminar in the capital on Tuesday. The trend was highlighted with reference to a World Health Organization (WHO) report at a seminar titled “Hypertension Control in Bangladesh: Progress, Barriers and the Way Forward,” held at the Bangladesh Medical Association (BMA) building. The event was organised by PROGGA (Knowledge for Progress) with support from the Global Health Advocacy Incubator (GHAI) and attended by journalists from print, television and online media. Citing a WHO report released in September, speakers said around 33 percent of people aged 30–79 worldwide are living with hypertension. Over the last 34 years, from 1990 to 2024, the number of affected people rose sharply from 650 million to 1.4 billion. In Bangladesh, one in every four adults is living with hypertension, making it a major contributor to the growing burden of non-communicable diseases (NCDs). The Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics Health and Morbidity Status Survey 2025 ranks hypertension first among the country’s top 10 diseases, said speakers. GHAI Bangladesh Country Lead Muhammad Ruhul Quddus Talukder said hypertension is a high-risk condition that often leads to heart attack and kidney failure, adding that although NCDs account for 71 percent of deaths in the country, only 4 percent of the national health budget is allocated to the sector. PROGGA Executive Director ABM Zubair warned that hypertension has reached epidemic proportions and called for stronger coordination among ministries to prevent the disease. EDCL Deputy Managing Director Riyad Arefin said there is no shortage of medicines from the company’s side, but distribution problems occur when drugs are not collected from upazila levels. He added that without proper budgeting and demand planning for NCDs, maintaining a steady drug supply becomes difficult. The seminar stressed that ensuring free availability of hypertension medicines at primary healthcare facilities, along with sustainable financing, could prevent heart attacks and strokes and save many lives.

U.S. President Donald Trump on Monday reiterated his call to take over Greenland, which triggered strong objections from Greenland, Denmark and the European Union. "We need Greenland for national security, not for minerals," Trump told reporters at his Mar-a-Lago resort in Palm Beach, Florida. The claim contrasted with his administration's earlier remarks, which cited a combination of national security concerns, Arctic strategy, and the potential of critical minerals and natural resources as drivers of U.S. interest. On Sunday, Trump announced the appointment of Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry as his special envoy to Greenland. "We have to have it (Greenland) and he (Landry) wanted to lead the charge," Trump said. In response, Landry said on X that the special envoy position would be "a volunteer position to make Greenland a part of the U.S." "They say Denmark owns it. Denmark has spent no money and has no military protection," Trump said. Greenland, a former Danish colony, was granted home rule in 1979. In 2009, Denmark passed the Act on Greenland Self-Government, expanding the island's authority over its domestic affairs. However, Denmark retains authority over Greenland's foreign, defense and security policy, according to information on the website of the Prime Minister's Office of Denmark. Trump's appointment of the envoy to Greenland has sparked strong diplomatic reactions in Greenland, Denmark and the European Union. Danish Foreign Minister Lars Lokke Rasmussen said on Monday that he would summon U.S. Ambassador to Denmark Kenneth Howery over the appointment. "I am very upset about this appointment of a special envoy. And I am particularly upset about the envoy's statements, which we find completely unacceptable," Rasmussen told Danish broadcaster TV 2. Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen and Greenlandic Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen said on Monday in a joint statement that they expect respect for their "joint territorial integrity" from the U.S. side. "We have said it very clearly before. Now we say it again. You cannot annex other countries. Not even with an argument about international security. Greenland belongs to the Greenlanders, and the U.S. should not take over Greenland," the statement said. "Preserving the territorial integrity of the Kingdom of Denmark, its sovereignty and the inviolability of its borders is essential for the European Union (EU)," EU Foreign Affairs spokesperson Anouar El Anouni told a press conference Monday, adding that the bloc's stance is grounded in a long-standing position on the issue.    

Fisheries and Livestock Adviser Farida Akhter on Tuesday said increasing fish production is meaningless without ensuring food safety, cautioning that although expanded agricultural activities have boosted fish supply, they have also given rise to serious food safety challenges. “If fish produced through aquaculture is not safe, then it cannot truly be called fish—we must keep this in mind. That is why food safety must be prioritised above all,” she said while inaugurating the 10th Biennial Fisheries Conference organised by the Bangladesh Fisheries Research Forum (BFRF) at the Bangladesh Agricultural Research Council (BARC) auditorium in the morning. Farida said fish is a vital source of nutrition for people, providing essential micronutrients, calcium and other nutrients that support eye health, bone strength and cognitive development. She added that fish-based dietary habits have played a significant role in the intellectual development of the Bengali people. Referring to marine fisheries resources, the adviser said Bangladesh has yet to utilise the full potential of the sea, with only about 30 percent of marine resources currently being exploited. Even within this limited utilisation, she said, multiple problems persist. She pointed out that artisanal and industrial trawlers operate on different fishing routes, while certain technologies used in industrial trawlers have created fresh concerns. Fishing methods that involve going to sea seven times to catch fish only once are unacceptable, she said, just as using SONAR (Sound Navigation and Ranging) technology to harvest all fish in a single trip cannot be considered appropriate. Farida said it was recently learned that around 70 out of 223 industrial trawlers are using SONAR technology, increasing the risk of overfishing in the sea. She stressed the need for effective policies to address these challenges. Scientific fish farming opening new avenues in food security: Fisheries Adviser As part of key government initiatives, she said a decision has been taken to update the National Fisheries Policy. While some reforms have already been introduced to fisheries laws, she said further additions are necessary and expressed her intention to implement them during her tenure. The adviser also voiced concern over the use of harmful fishing gear, saying that previously used gear is being modified into forms that are damaging to the environment and biodiversity. She noted that fishing using electric shocks has also been reported, calling it completely unacceptable. She said there is also disparity in incentive support for fishers, noting that compared to the assistance provided to the agriculture sector, fishers do not receive adequate incentives. During fishing ban periods, she said, insufficient support often forces fishers to unintentionally violate regulations. Farida said that hilsa breeding and migration are being severely disrupted due to the combined impact of reduced river navigability, pollution and climate change. “HIlsa is not just a fish; it is a national asset. Like dolphin conservation, hilsa protection should be part of a global movement,” she said, adding that obstacles along hilsa migration routes have been identified and requests have been made to the Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Authority (BIWTA) for necessary dredging through coordinated efforts. At the conference, WorldFish Bangladesh Country Representative Dr Faruk-Ul Islam presented the keynote paper, while FAO Representative in Bangladesh (and interim) Dr Dia Sanou spoke as a distinguished guest.

At least five people were killed after a small Mexican Navy aircraft on a medical mission crashed into waters near Galveston, Texas, on Monday afternoon, triggering a large-scale search and rescue operation, officials said. The plane was carrying eight people, including four Mexican Navy officers and four civilians, among them a child, according to Mexico’s Navy. Two of the civilians were linked to a nonprofit organisation that assists Mexican children with severe burns and helps transport them to hospitals in the United States. U.S. Coast Guard Petty Officer Luke Baker confirmed that at least five people died in the crash, though the identities of the victims were not immediately released. The cause of the crash remains under investigation. The aircraft went down in Galveston Bay near the base of the causeway connecting Galveston Island to the mainland, about 50 miles southeast of Houston. Emergency responders and search teams rushed to the scene in the busy coastal area. A local yacht captain, Sky Decker, who joined rescue efforts, said he found a badly injured woman trapped inside the nearly submerged plane amid debris and fuel fumes. He also recovered the body of another passenger, whom he said had already died. Mexico’s Navy said the plane was supporting a medical mission in coordination with the Michou and Mau Foundation, which provides emergency transport for children with life-threatening burns to Shriners Children’s Hospital in Galveston. The foundation expressed condolences to the victims’ families and reaffirmed its commitment to helping burn patients. Mexican authorities also conveyed deep sympathy to those affected. Teams from the US Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board have arrived to investigate the incident. Officials said weather conditions, including fog that reduced visibility to about half a mile, may have been a factor, though this has not been confirmed.

A case has been filed against 350-400 people in connection with the attack on The Daily Star office building at Kazi Nazrul Islam Avenue in the capital on Friday. Mizanur Rahman, head of operations at the Daily Star, filed the case with Tejgaon police station on Monday night, said Officer-in-Charge of the police station Kayesweenu. According to the case statement, the attackers carrying local weapons, sticks, and flammable materials, gathered outside The Daily Star building around 12:25am and chanted provocative slogans against the newspaper. Around 12:35am, the group forcibly broke steel gates and glass doors to enter the premises. They assaulted staff, vandalised office property, looted valuables, and set fire to furniture and documents. More than 200 computers, laptops, cameras, printers, and other electronic equipment were damaged or destroyed. Besides, around Tk 35 lakh in cash stored in several lockers was looted. The assailants set fire to the ground, second, and third floors of the building, severely damaging assets and documents. After the attack, the Daily Star was forced to suspend its print edition on December 19, and its online operations were halted for 17 hours, it added.

Inspector General of Police (IGP) Baharul Alam on Tuesday warned that the growing practice of blocking roads and highways over trivial issues must stop immediately, or else it will hamper the police’s ability to provide full security support for the national election scheduled for February 12. “We see attempts to create instability in society through road and highway blockades with minor demands or trivial matters. We think the time has come to stop these (practices). If we cannot establish order everywhere, it will not be possible for us to provide all-out support to the Election Commission for conducting the elections,” he said while addressing a briefing arranged for the returning officers and the senior field officers. The Election Commission arranged the briefing on electoral management affairs for deputy commissioners (DCs), superintendents of police (SPs) and other field-level high officials at 10:00am at the Nirbachan Bhaban in the city’s Agargaon area, ahead of the upcoming national election and referendum scheduled for February 12, 2026. Besides DCs and SPs, the briefing is being attended by divisional commissioners, metropolitan police commissioners, deputy inspectors general (DIGs) of police, regional election officers and district election officers. Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) AMM Nasir Uddin and four election commissioners—Abdur Rahmanel Masud, Tahmida Ahmad, Anwarul Islam Saker, and Brig Gen (retd) Abul Fazal Md Sanaullah—provided guidelines and instructions to ensure free, fair, and festive elections. EC Senior Secretary Akhtar Ahmed presided over the briefing. Road blockades cause severe traffic congestion in Dhaka Reflecting on past challenges, IGP Alam said police faced significant difficulties in maintaining law and order due to the reality during the post-July movement period in Bangladesh. “We must overcome such situations. I believe that we have enhanced our capabilities enough at this stage ahead of this election. We seek the Election Commission’s continued support for taking strict measures (to maintain the order),” he said. The IGP pledged that the police would exert their utmost efforts to ensure the elections are conducted successfully and peacefully. “On behalf of Bangladesh Police, I assure the Chief Election Commissioner and all election commissioners that we will be able to hold this election successfully, fairly and peacefully with all our strength and with all our efforts, and we have the full capability to do so. You can have faith in it," he said. He praised the EC’s initiatives, including empowering the Electoral Inquiry Committee to conduct summary trials for immediate action on election-related offenses. “This provision is highly timely,” he said. During the briefing, the IGP sought clarification on field-level police transfers, particularly the lower police personnel like sub-inspector (SI) and constables. Drone operations have been banned in and around all airports including Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport due national security risks and safe air navigation. The Civil Aviation Authority of Bangladesh (CAAB) issued a letter in this regard informing all the authorities concerned, said a PID handout. According to the letter, although unauthorised drone operation in airport areas are completely prohibited under the Drone Registration and Flight Policy 2020, some electronic media outlets operated drones without permission on December 19 while covering the reception of the body of Inquilab Moncho leader Sharif Osman Hadi at the airport. The incident took place in the presence of three advisers and other important persons and drone footage was captured without prior approval which pose a serious threat to aviation safety, it said. CAAB urged representatives of electronic media and the general public to refrain from flying drones in and around airport areas.

Tensions mounted near the Bangladesh High Commission in New Delhi on Tuesday as hundreds of activists from the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) clashed with police during a protest over the lynching of a Hindu man in Bangladesh. Carrying saffron flags and chanting slogans, the protesters broke through multiple police barricades, forcing security personnel to struggle to contain the crowd in the high-security diplomatic zone, according to Indian media, including PTI and ANI. Police had earlier stepped up security in the area in anticipation of the demonstration announced by Hindu right-wing groups, citing concerns over the death of a Hindu youth in a lynch-mob attack in Bangladesh. Besides, hundreds of protesters attempted to march towards the Bangladesh Deputy High Commission in Kolkata but were stopped by police. The march, titled ‘Hindu Hunkar Padayatra’, was organised under the banner of Bongiyo Hindu Jagaran, reports PTI. The procession began from Sealdah and was heading towards the Bangladesh Deputy High Commission when police intercepted it in the Beckbagan area. Police set up barricades to prevent the protesters from advancing, witnesses said. A large contingent of police personnel was deployed in and around the Bangladesh Deputy High Commission office to maintain law and order amid the protest. Bangladesh voices concern to India over attacks on missions Dipu Chandra Das, 28, a garment worker, was beaten to death by a mob over alleged blasphemy in Bhaluka Upazila of Mymensingh district December 18 and his body was later set on fire. Bangladesh on Tuesday expressed grave concern to the government of India over incidents involving extremist elements, including disturbances outside the Bangladesh High Commission and the official residence in New Delhi on December 20, as well as vandalism at the Bangladesh Visa Centre in Siliguri on December 22. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs summoned Indian High Commissioner to Bangladesh Pranay Verma and expressed deep concern over violent protests staged outside the premises of the different Diplomatic Missions of Bangladesh in India. Bangladesh condemned such acts of premeditated violence or intimidation against diplomatic establishments, which not only endanger the safety of diplomatic personnel but also undermine the principles of mutual respect and values of peace and tolerance. The government of Bangladesh called upon the government of India to conduct a thorough investigation into the incidents, to take all necessary measures to prevent the recurrence of such acts and to ensure safety and security of Bangladesh’s diplomatic missions and related facilities in India. BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Tuesday alleged that a vested quarter is ‘dangerously conspiring’ to obstruct Bangladesh’s democratic transition process. “Bangladesh is now going through a transition period. A brutal fascist rule destroyed our values, democratic institutions and the economy,” he said while speaking at a press conference at the party chairperson’s Gulshan office. After emerging from that fascist rule, the BNP leader said the nation is now moving towards an election, with the expectation that an elected government and an elected parliament will guide the country and the people in the right direction. “But in the meantime, it is clear that a small group and a vested quarter are dangerously conspiring to disrupt this transition process,” he said. Fakhrul said Inquilab Mancha spokesperson Sharif Osman Hadi was killed as part of that conspiracy, and prayed for the salvation of his departed soul. “I once again pray for the forgiveness of the martyred Osman Bin Hadi and ask the Almighty Allah to grant him the highest place in Jannah,” he said. At the press conference, Fakhrul announced that BNP will share four parliamentary seats—Nilphamari-1, Narayanganj-4, Sylhet-5 and Brahmanbaria-2—with its alliance partner Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam Bangladesh for the upcoming 13th national parliamentary election. Speaking about the law and order situation, Fakhrul said it has deteriorated significantly due to the failure of the interim government during the transition period. “We expected that the government led by Professor Muhammad Yunus would at least show its capability during these few months and run the country efficiently,” he said. The BNP leader thanked the interim government for announcing the election date on February 12, 2026, saying the Election Commission is moving forward accordingly. He, however, said the government needs to be more alert and play a more positive and effective role in creating a proper election environment. “We hope they will focus more on ensuring that the election is held in a truly free and fair atmosphere." Replying to a question, Fakhrul said seat-sharing arrangements with their alliance partners have already been finalised. “Our understanding with alliance partners has been completed, and our bond with them has become even stronger,” he said. The Executive Committee of the National Economic Council (ECNEC) on Tuesday approved 22 development projects with a total estimated cost of Tk 46,419.66 crore, with the majority of the funding to come from government sources. Of the total project cost, Tk 30,482.49 crore will be financed from the government exchequer, Tk 1,689.61 crore from project loans and Tk 14,247.56 crore from the implementing agencies’ own funds. The approval came at an ECNEC meeting held at the NEC Conference Room on the Planning Commission premises, chaired by Chief Adviser and ECNEC Chairperson Prof Dr Muhammad Yunus. Among the approved projects, 14 are new, five are revised and three involve extensions of project tenure. Under the Road Transport and Bridges Ministry, three projects were approved, including the development of a connecting road from the Karnaphuli Tunnel (Anwara) to the Chattogram–Cox’s Bazar National Highway up to Gachhbari, upgrading the Hili (land port)–Dugdugi–Ghoraghat National Highway (N-521) in Dinajpur along with reconstruction of narrow and dilapidated culverts and construction of rigid pavement and drains in market areas, and land acquisition and utility relocation support for the four-laning of the Dhaka (Kanchpur)–Sylhet–Tamabil highway with separate service lanes on both sides. The Housing and Public Works Ministry received approval for the revised project to construct 672 residential flats in eight 15-storey buildings for government officers and employees at Aliganj in Narayanganj. Five projects were approved under the Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives Ministry. These include establishment of the Dhaka WASA Training and Research Academy, a revised project for waterlogging mitigation, safe water supply and infrastructure development in Sylhet City Corporation, the Climate Resilient and Livelihood Enhancement Project (CRALEP), development of important rural infrastructure in Patuakhali district, and widening and strengthening of key upazila and union roads in the Sylhet division. The Defence Ministry secured approval for two projects—revised infrastructure development of Mongla Commander Flotilla West and infrastructural development of the Army Institute of Physiotherapy and Rehabilitation in Savar. One major project under the Power, Energy and Mineral Resources Ministry—the Modernisation and Expansion of Eastern Refinery Limited (ERL)—was also cleared by ECNEC. In the social sector, the committee approved the revised reconstruction project of the Destitute Children Training and Rehabilitation Centre at Konabari in Gazipur under the Social Welfare Ministry, and the Education and Research Capacity Building project of the National Institute of Advanced Nursing Education and Research (NIANER) under the Health Education and Family Welfare Ministry. The Education Ministry received approval for two projects—the development of Hajee Mohammad Danesh Science and Technology University and the third revision of the Bangladesh University of Professionals development project. Four projects under the Water Resources Ministry were also approved. These include sustainable water management of the Karnaphuli River and its linked rivers (Kachalong, Raikhiyang and Shalak) in Rangamati Hill District, urgent maintenance and rehabilitation of the Ganges–Kobadak irrigation project, development of the Surma–Kushiyara river basin for flood control and integrated water resources management (first phase), and the proposed second revision of the Disaster Risk Management Enhancement Project (Component-1, BWDB part). Besides, ECNEC approved the Sustainable Agricultural Development project in the Bogura agricultural region under the Agriculture Ministry and the second-phase Darul Arqam Islamic education management and consolidation project under the Religious Affairs Ministry. At the meeting, the Planning Adviser also informed ECNEC about 10 projects with individual costs below Tk 50 crore that had already been approved. These include infrastructure development of selected educational institutions in Noakhali, Cumilla and Feni, an employment generation project for marginalised communities, a revised integrated and participatory noise pollution control project, a climate adaptation initiative for vulnerable offshore islands and riverine char areas, several riverbank protection and flood management projects in Brahmanbaria and Noakhali, enhancement of RAB’s operational capacity, improvement of the working environment at the Planning Ministry campus, development of Faridpur’s Tepakhola Lake, and the first revision of the Economic Census 2023.

The Executive Committee of the National Economic Council (ECNEC) on Tuesday (December 23, 2025) approved a Tk 35,465 crore project to modernise and expand Eastern Refinery Limited (ERL), aiming to strengthen Bangladesh’s energy security, produce cleaner fuel and cut dependence on imported refined petroleum products. The approval came at an ECNEC meeting held at the NEC Auditorium of the Planning Commission with Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus in the chair. Titled “Modernisation and Expansion of Eastern Refinery Limited (ERL),” the project has been undertaken by the Energy and Mineral Resources Division and will be implemented by ERL on behalf of the Bangladesh Petroleum Corporation (BPC). It falls under the power and energy sector and will be implemented in the Patenga area under Chattogram City Corporation in Chattogram district from December 2025 to November 2030. According to official documents, the key objectives of the project are to further reinforce national energy security, produce cleaner and more environment-friendly petroleum products and reduce the country’s heavy reliance on imported finished petroleum products. Under the project, a wide range of activities will be carried out, including site preparation, detailed engineering, procurement and construction involving both civil and mechanical works. A total of 20 processing units and 18 utility and off-site units will be installed as part of the expansion. Besides, electrical line connections will be taken from the Power Development Board (PDB), gas line connections from Karnaphuli Gas Distribution Company Limited (KGDCL), drainage infrastructure will be constructed, and computers, office equipment and other ancillary items will be procured. At present, ERL meets only about 20 per cent of the country’s total demand for petroleum products, with the remaining requirement being fulfilled through imports. This results in a substantial outflow of foreign currency for importing refined fuels. Officials said the introduction of Euro-5 fuel standards has made petroleum product specifications much more stringent. The proposed modernised refinery will produce Euro-5 standard environment-friendly gasoline and diesel, while upgrading existing diesel, motor spirit and octane produced at ERL to Euro-5 standards. This development has created favourable conditions for handling larger volumes of crude oil required for the expanded refinery. The Planning Commission, in its recommendation, said that once implemented, the project would enable the country to refine 3 million metric tonnes of crude oil annually and meet around 45 to 50 per cent of national demand for petroleum products. This is expected to enhance fuel storage capacity, save a significant amount of foreign exchange and contribute to ensuring long-term energy security for the country. Under a Processing Agreement with Bangladesh Petroleum Corporation (BPC), ERL processes crude oil imported by BPC and delivers the finished petroleum products to the other subsidiaries of BPC for marketing and distribution. BNP on Tuesday announced that it will share four parliamentary seats with its alliance partner Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam Bangladesh for the upcoming 13th national parliamentary election. BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir disclosed the decision at a press conference at the party Chairperson’s Gulshan office, saying the seats were given as part of seat-sharing arrangements with alliance partners. “Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam Bangladesh will contest the upcoming election with BNP on the basis of an understanding. BNP has left Nilphamari-1, Narayanganj-4, Brahmanbaria-2 and Sylhet-5 constituencies for Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam Bangladesh, where the party will contest the election with the ‘Date Palm Tree’ symbol,” Fakhrul said. On behalf of BNP, he congratulated and welcomed the four candidates of Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam Bangladesh. Fakhrul also said BNP will not field any candidate in the four agreed constituencies, and Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam Bangladesh will not contest in other seats across the country as part of the understanding. Calling upon BNP leaders and activists, Fakhrul urged them to fully cooperate with Jamiat candidates in the four constituencies. “I appeal to our leaders and workers, and to voters in those areas, to vote for the ‘Date Palm Tree’ symbol and thereby strengthen the ‘Sheaf of Paddy’,” he said. Fakhrul warned that if any BNP leader or activist contests the election as an independent candidate in seats already allocated to alliance partners, organisational action will be taken against them. The Jamiat candidates are Maulana Md Manjurul Islam Afendi in Nilphamari-1, Mufti Monir Hossain Kasemi in Narayanganj-4, Maulana Md Ubaidullah Faruq in Sylhet-5 and Maulana Junayed Al Habib in Brahmanbaria-2. BNP has already announced party candidates for 272 seats in two phases ahead of the 13th national parliamentary election. Of the remaining 28 seats, four have now been allocated to Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam Bangladesh as part of the alliance arrangement. Speaking at the programme, BNP Standing Committee Member Salahuddin Ahmed said their party has reached an understanding on seat sharing with Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam Bangladesh as it is one of the country’s leading Islamic parties. “Under this understanding, BNP will not field any candidate in the agreed constituencies, and Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam Bangladesh will not contest in other constituencies across the country,” he said. The BNP leader said details of further seat-sharing arrangements with other parties would be announced later, and mentioned that their party would uphold faith and trust in Almighty Allah in the Constitution, as incorporated through the Fifth Amendment by late President Ziaur Rahman. He said BNP has already declared that no law contradictory to the Quran and Sunnah will be enacted and that graduates from Qawmi madrasas will receive due recognition. Salahuddin also said BNP plans to include in its election manifesto provisions for state allowances for imams, khatibs and muezzins, including festival allowances, and to strengthen the existing trust for their welfare. He said priority consideration will also be given to them in recruitment as religious teachers in schools, colleges and madrasas, following existing rules. Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam Bangladesh Ameer Maulana Md Ubaidullah Farroque said the country is currently not in a normal situation and has become polarised over the election issue. “We believe the BNP is more trustworthy than others when it comes to running the country in the interest of the nation and its people.” Farroque said Jamiat decided to contest the election with BNP after careful analysis, citing BNP’s past governance experience and stability. “As an Islamic values-based party, we consider BNP suitable for the welfare of the nation and the country. We have not seen any such past record or actions of the eight-party alliance so far. However, we have seen BNP govern the country for three terms, which is why we can place our trust in BNP,” he said. Farroque expressed the hope that if BNP forms the government, it will energise the Islamic sphere in the same way the country is governed and taken forward with its people.

The interim government of Bangladesh on Tuesday (December 23, 2025) approved a road connectivity project aimed at improving access between the much-talked-about  Karnaphuli Tunnel (Anwara end) and the Chattogram-Cox’s Bazar National Highway at Gachhbari is set to be implemented, with the government allocating Tk 462.99 crore entirely from its own funds. The project, titled ‘Development of the Connecting Road from Karnaphuli Tunnel (Anwara) to Gachhbari of Chattogram-Cox’s Bazar National Highway’, will be undertaken by the Roads and Highways Department (RHD) under the Road Transport and Highways Division. The implementation period has been fixed from October 2025 to December 2028. The approval came from the ECNEC meeting chaired by Chief Adviser Prof Muhammad Yunus, held at the NEC Conference Room of the Planning Ministry. Its primary objective is to upgrade the existing connecting road to appropriate standards and width to ensure uninterrupted, faster and safer road communication, reduce traffic congestion in Anwara and Chandanaish upazila towns, and develop an integrated, sustainable and cost-effective road transport network. According to the project profile, key activities include land acquisition, widening of road embankments, widening and strengthening of existing pavement, construction of new pavement with a width of 10.30 metres, surfacing works with DBS base and wearing course, construction of rigid RCC pavement, building of 18 RCC box culverts and three PC/RCC girder bridges, construction of RCC drain-cum-footpaths and retaining walls, and relocation of utilities. Anwara upazila holds significant geographical and economic importance, bordered by Patiya to the north, Banshkhali to the south, Chandanaish to the east and the Bay of Bengal to the west. The road serves as a vital transport corridor for access to KAFCO, the Korean EPZ, Parki Sea Beach, the Marine Academy, the shrine of Hazrat Shah Mohsen Aulia (RA), CUFL and several industrial establishments. Due to heavy traffic, congestion and road accidents have become common in the area. Under the proposed project, the road from Gachhbari to Joykali Bazar will be widened over 16.48 kilometres from the existing 5.5-metre width, while a new 2.50-kilometre road will be constructed from Syed Kuchiar Mor to Sholokata. The entire corridor will be upgraded to national highway standards with a width of 10.30 metres. The road connects Kalabibir Dighi Mor of N-115 road (R-170) to Gachhbari (Z-1040), linking with the N-1 national highway after 21.08 kilometres. At present, vehicles travelling from Dhaka to Cox’s Bazar via the Karnaphuli Tunnel must pass through a 39-kilometre route via Patiya–Anwara Y-junction–Shantirhat–Patiya Bypass–Gachhbari. Once the project is completed, the distance from the Karnaphuli Tunnel to Gachhbari via Anwara will be reduced by around 18 kilometres, saving an estimated 35 minutes of travel time. Officials said the project was first proposed in July 2023 with an estimated cost of Tk 495.76 crore and an implementation period up to June 2026. Following several rounds of review by the Planning Commission and Project Evaluation Committee (PEC), the Development Project Proposal (DPP) was revised multiple times to rationalise costs and timelines. The latest revised DPP proposes a reduced cost of Tk 462.99 crore, with an extended implementation period of one year and six months. The Planning Commission, in its recommendation, said the project would establish a modern, safe and efficient road connection between the Karnaphuli Tunnel and the Chattogram–Cox’s Bazar National Highway. This, it noted, would facilitate smoother movement of passenger and freight vehicles, enhance the utilisation of the Karnaphuli Tunnel, and significantly improve connectivity between Dhaka and Cox’s Bazar. The entire route measures 9.39 kilometers, with the main tunnel segment spanning 3.32 kilometers, featuring dual two-lane tubes. It was constructed using a slurry shield tunneling method by the China Communications Construction Company (CCCC). The project, part of China's "One Belt, One Road" initiative, cost around $1.1 billion, with partial financing from the Exim Bank of China. The primary objective of the tunnel is to revolutionize transportation dynamics in the region. It is expected to significantly reduce travel time and alleviate traffic congestion on existing bridges, particularly easing the journey between Chattogram and the tourist hub of Cox's Bazar from four hours to potentially two. It also provides a vital link to the Chattogram Port, Matarbari Deep Seaport, and the proposed industrial zones in the Anwara Upazila, fostering trade and investment. The U.S. military carried out another strike Monday against a vessel it said was involved in drug-smuggling operations in the eastern Pacific Ocean, killing one person, according to U.S. Southern Command. Zaima Rahman, daughter of BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman and granddaughter of former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia, on Tuesday (December 23, 2025) said she hopes to contribute to rebuilding Bangladesh and understand the country better by connecting directly with people. Detectives have arrested nine more people from different parts of the country for their alleged involvement in vandalism and arson attacks on the offices of Prothom Alo and The Daily Star in the capital’s Karwan Bazar area during protests over the death of Inqilab Moncho leader Osman Hadi. The identities of the arrestees could not be known immediately. Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) AMM Nasir Uddin on Tuesday urged the returning officers (ROs) and field-level administration to act rightly and effectively on time to dispel the blame of failure in delivering a credible election. “I hope that we all together will discharge the huge responsibility that has fallen on our shoulders. Inshallah, we will fulfill this responsibility properly without any deviation. We will do the right work at the right time, effectively,” the CEC said while delivering his opening speech at a briefing arranged for returning officers and senior field officials. The briefing on electoral management affairs for deputy commissioners (DCs), superintendents of police (SPs) and other field-level high officials began at 10:00am at the Nirbachan Bhaban in the city’s Agargaon area, ahead of the upcoming national election and referendum scheduled for February 12, 2026. Besides DCs and SPs, the briefing is being attended by divisional commissioners, metropolitan police commissioners, deputy inspectors general (DIGs) of police, regional election officers and district election officers. The CEC said he had earlier stated deliberately that the Election Commission wanted to demonstrate what the rule of law truly means, as the Commission and the government administration have been facing collective blame for destroying the electoral system. “We all are being blamed that we have absolutely failed our responsibility particularly in delivering credible elections. We are being blamed for destroying the election system. It is alleged that we arranged a staged and managed election,” he said. Nasir Uddin said they want to prove that they can conduct a proper and beautiful election. “We want to be free from this blame. We want to dispel this blame. We want to prove that we can conduct a proper and fair election, and this is possible only through the rule of law,” he said. The CEC asked the field administration to apply the law equally for all, stressing that rule of law is essential to ensure credibility in the electoral process. “If we fail to discharge the responsibility that has fallen upon us at this critical juncture, what will be our response before the future generation?” he said adding that it is the collective responsibility to keep this country in the right condition. “We can’t fail our responsibility,” said the CEC adding that the nation can’t afford any more failure. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs summoned Indian High Commissioner to Bangladesh Pranay Verma and expressed deep concern over violent protests staged outside the premises of the different Diplomatic Missions of Bangladesh in India. At least ten houses were gutted in a fire that broke out at Abdar village in Sreepur upazila of Gazipur district on Tuesday. Md Nurul Karim, inspector of Sreepur Fire Service and Civil Defence, said the fire broke out at a tin-shed house in the morning and engulfed the adjoining houses. On information, two firefighting units rushed to the spot and extinguished the fire after an hour of frantic effort. However, no casualty was reported in the fire and the cause of the fire will be known after an investigation.

Global human rights organisations have expressed concern that the targeting of politicians, activists, major media outlets and cultural institutions in Bangladesh, amid heightened political tensions ahead of the 2026 national election, signals a troubling erosion of the rule of law and a shrinking space for free expression, civic discourse and democratic participation. "We stand in solidarity with Bangladesh’s journalists, media workers, artists, and diverse communities," said the organisations in a joint statement shared by the Human Rights Watch (HRW) on Monday (December 22, 2025). The organisations reiterated their commitment to defending freedom of expression, accountability, and the rights of communities to participate safely and freely in civic and cultural life—both offline and online. The signatories to the statement are Access Now, Article 19, Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ), Human Rights Watch (HRW), International Truth and Justice Project (ITJP), Journalists for Democracy in Sri Lanka (JDS) and Tech Global Institute. "These developments point to a dangerous convergence of online and offline violence, coupled with long-standing patterns of coordinated harassment and state-sanctioned surveillance that have fostered a culture of impunity," said the rights bodies. There has been a documented pattern of attacks on freedom of thought and expression through abuse of the legal system, and intimidation and attacks of bauls, journalists, media workers, and artists throughout this year, the statement said. A number of these attacks appear to have been fueled by hate speech and explicit calls to violence online apparently posted by some prominent personalities with large followings on social media platforms, and further amplified by their followers and affiliated networks, it mentioned. These incidents further illustrate a failure of the state to respond promptly and effectively to online hate and incitement, despite well-documented and recurring patterns of hate speech and violent mobilization. While the interim government has promoted extensive cyber law reforms—proposals that have drawn criticism from civil society groups for lacking substance, practicality, and adequate consultation—the persistent spread of incitement to violence online exposes a profound enforcement failure and raises serious concerns about the efficacy of this government’s commitments to online safety. Bangladesh has binding obligations under international human rights law, including the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR), as well as constitutional guarantees that protect freedom of expression, media freedom, cultural life, political and civic participation, and personal security. These obligations require the state to do everything they reasonably can to prevent, protect against, investigate, hold accountable those responsible, and remedy violations committed by both state and non-state actors. These failures must be understood in the context of the recent developments in Bangladesh. Conduct swift, independent, and transparent investigations into the attacks on Prothom Alo, The Daily Star, and Chhayanaut, as well as other journalists, media workers, and artists, and ensure that all perpetrators, planners, and instigators are held accountable through due process of law and victims or next-of-kin have access to effective remedies. Engage technology companies and social media platforms to implement proactive, proportionate and timely interventions against hate speech and incitement to violence, and which are responsive to emerging crises, and work with civil society and human rights groups to put in place safeguards that protect user safety and free expression during the election. Publicly and unequivocally condemn all acts of violence, intimidation, and harassment against journalists, media outlets, and cultural and intellectual institutions, and reaffirm the state’s commitment to protecting freedom of expression and cultural life. Guarantee a safe and enabling environment for journalism, cultural expression, and civic participation—both offline and online—particularly in the lead-up to the 2026 national election. Align national laws, policies, and practices with Bangladesh’s constitutional guarantees and its international human rights obligations, including under the ICCPR, to safeguard freedom of expression, media freedom, and personal security. A light aircraft operated by the Mexican Navy crashed near Galveston, Texas, on Monday while transporting a child for medical care, killing at least five people and prompting a search in nearby coastal waters, authorities said. The plane was carrying eight people in total—four Mexican Navy officers and four civilians, including a child—according to Mexico’s Navy. U.S. officials did not immediately specify which passengers were among the confirmed fatalities. Two of those on board were affiliated with the Michou and Mau Foundation, a nonprofit organization that helps Mexican children suffering from severe burns. The crash occurred Monday afternoon near the base of a causeway close to Galveston, roughly 50 miles southeast of Houston. Officials said the cause of the incident has not yet been determined. In a statement, Mexico’s Navy said the aircraft was conducting a medical mission when it was involved in an accident. President Donald Trump issued a fresh warning to Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro on Monday as the United States increased pressure on Caracas, with the Coast Guard stepping up efforts to intercept oil tankers in the Caribbean. Flanked by senior national security officials, including Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, Trump indicated he is prepared to further ramp up a campaign against Maduro that began four months ago. While initially framed as an effort to curb drug trafficking from Venezuela, the strategy has since broadened in scope. “If he decides to push back or act tough, that would be the last time,” Trump said during a pause in his Florida vacation, where he also announced plans for the Navy to construct a new large warship. Trump’s remarks came as the Coast Guard continued pursuing a sanctioned oil tanker for a second straight day. U.S. officials say the vessel is part of a Venezuelan “shadow fleet” used to bypass sanctions, operating under a false flag and subject to a U.S. seizure order. “It’s on the move, and we’ll eventually take it,” Trump said. This marks the third tanker targeted by U.S. authorities. On Saturday, the Coast Guard seized the Panama-flagged Centuries, which officials also linked to Venezuela’s covert oil transport network. Just days before Christmas, a cyberattack forced France’s national postal service offline on Monday, causing delays in parcel deliveries and disrupting online payment systems at one of the busiest times of the year. The outage frustrated customers and added pressure on postal employees already stretched by the holiday rush. By Monday evening, more than eight hours after the problem began, the disruption had still not been fully resolved. No group immediately took responsibility for the attack, though speculation circulated among workers and the public. Authorities declined to comment on who might be behind it, while Paris prosecutors opened an investigation. La Poste described the incident as a “major network failure,” later explaining it was caused by a distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attack that made its online platforms unavailable. The company said customer data was not compromised, but services requiring tracking or access to internal systems were brought to a halt. Standard letter mail, including holiday cards, continued to operate. The cyberattack also affected La Poste’s banking subsidiary, La Banque Postale. Dhaka ranked third on the list of cities worldwide with the worst air quality, with an AQI score of 252 at 9:05 am on Tuesday morning. Dhaka’s air was classified as 'very unhealthy', according to the air quality and pollution city ranking. Egypt’s Cairo, India's Delhi and India’s Kolkata occupied the first, second and fourth spots in the list, with AQI scores of 374, 290 and 210, respectively. An AQI between 151 and 200 is considered 'unhealthy' while 201-300 is 'very unhealthy' and 301-400 is considered 'hazardous', posing severe health risks to residents. The AQI, an index for reporting daily air quality, informs people how clean or polluted the air of a certain city is and what associated health effects might be a concern for them. The AQI in Bangladesh is based on five pollutants: particulate matter (PM10 and PM2.5), NO2, CO, SO2, and ozone. Dhaka has long been grappling with air pollution issues. Its air quality usually turns unhealthy in winter and improves during the monsoon.  

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said early versions of U.S.-backed peace proposals with Russia align closely with Ukraine’s key demands, describing the talks as “quite solid” so far. Speaking in Kyiv, he noted that while progress has been made, neither side is likely to achieve all of its objectives in a settlement after nearly four years of war. Zelenskyy said discussions with U.S. officials suggest significant movement toward compromise, though difficult issues remain for both Ukraine and Russia. He added that about 90% of Ukraine’s priorities have been reflected in the draft agreements. The proposed deal is based on a 20-point plan, alongside a broader framework on security guarantees involving Ukraine, European partners, and the United States, plus a separate U.S.-Ukraine bilateral security document. Key elements include maintaining Ukraine’s army at roughly 800,000 troops in peacetime, advancing toward EU membership, and deploying European forces—led by France and the UK with U.S. support—to help secure Ukraine’s air, land, and sea defenses. Some countries would provide military presence, while others would contribute in areas such as energy security, financing, and civil protection, Zelenskyy said. Kyiv wants the bilateral security agreement with Washington reviewed by the U.S. Congress, with certain details kept confidential. Meanwhile, U.S. negotiators are holding talks with Russian representatives, and Washington has asked that details remain undisclosed. Former President Donald Trump, who has pushed for a peace deal for months, said the discussions are ongoing and reiterated his desire to see the fighting end. On the battlefield, Zelenskyy said Ukraine’s defensive positions are holding despite intensified Russian attacks, which he said have also led to higher Russian losses. The fire that broke out at the multi-storey building near Babubazar Bridge in the capital has been brought under control. The fire broke out at the 5th floor of the 14-storey building around 6:40 am on Tuesday, said duty officer of Fire Service and Civil Defence (FSCD), Shahjahan Hossain. On information, nine firefighting units rushed to the spot and extinguished the fire around 8:10 am. However, what caused the fire could not be known immediately.  

A project envisioned as a vital connectivity link for Narail has instead come to epitomise years of delay, mounting costs and unmet promises. Construction of the Barui Para Bridge over the Nabaganga River in Kalia upazila has dragged on for nearly eight years, far exceeding its original one-and-a-half-year deadline. With only partial progress achieved, local residents and commuters continue to endure daily hardship, growing increasingly frustrated as deadline after deadline slips by. The prolonged delay has also come at a heavy financial cost. Originally approved at Tk 65 crore, the project’s budget has ballooned to around Tk 136 crore—almost two and a half times higher—largely due to design complications and repeated extensions. Crippling bridge forces 30,000 Lalmonirhat residents to risk their lives daily Once completed, the bridge is expected to significantly improve road connectivity between Narail Sadar and Kalia upazila, while also easing communication with at least three neighbouring districts. Until then, the unfinished structure stands as a reminder of stalled promises. Supervised by the Roads and Highways Department (RHD), construction of the bridge began in 2018. Despite the passage of time, the project remains incomplete. The latest extension has set June next year as the new deadline. So far, work on 11 piers, 11 spans and the approach roads on both sides of the river have been completed. However, the most critical section—the central portion of the bridge—remains unfinished. This includes three piers and three steel spans that are yet to be installed, locals said. According to RHD sources, the PC girder bridge measures 651.83 metres in length and 10.25 metres in width. While the original contract value stood at Tk 65 crore, repeated design modifications and time overruns have pushed the total project cost to Tk 135.92 crore. The construction process, however, faced major setbacks after the No-9 pier was washed away twice following collisions with bulkheads. Unable to complete four piers and three spans of the main structure, the contractor spent Tk 61 crore before the Roads and Highways Department ultimately terminated the first-phase contract after multiple deadline extensions. Subsequently, the RHD awarded the remaining work under a second-phase contract to Concrete and Steel Technologist Ltd. The firm has reported that installation work has already begun on three imported steel spans, including a large 86.73-metre steel arch span sourced from abroad. Abdul Wadud Khan Liton, a responsible official of the contracting firm, acknowledged the delays, attributing them to the complexities involved in importing specialised steel spans. US President Donald Trump has triggered fresh tensions with Denmark after appointing Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry as special envoy to Greenland, with Landry saying he will serve to help make the Arctic island part of the United States. Trump announced the appointment on Sunday, reviving his long-standing interest in Greenland, a semi-autonomous territory of Denmark. In a post on X, Landry said it was an honour to serve in a voluntary role to make Greenland part of the US. The move drew sharp reactions from Denmark and Greenland. Danish Foreign Minister Lars Lokke Rasmussen said Copenhagen would summon the US ambassador for an explanation, warning that Denmark cannot accept actions that undermine its territorial integrity. Greenland Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen said the island decides its own future and stressed that Greenland belongs to its people. He added that while Greenland is open to cooperation with the US and others, this must be based on mutual respect. Trump has repeatedly pointed to Greenland’s strategic location and mineral wealth and has not ruled out using force to gain control, a position that has alarmed Denmark, a Nato ally. Greenland has extensive self-rule, though defence and foreign policy remain under Danish authority. Opinion polls show strong opposition among Greenlanders to joining the US. EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said the European Union stands in full solidarity with Denmark and the people of Greenland. Trump said Landry understands how important Greenland is to US national security and will advance American interests. Envoys are informal appointments and do not require approval from the host country. Landry, a former congressman, attorney general and military veteran, has previously expressed support for Greenland joining the US. He said his envoy role would not affect his duties as Louisiana governor. The dispute comes amid growing strategic competition in the Arctic, where melting ice is opening new shipping routes and access to valuable resources. Mohammad Ziaul Haque has been appointed as the new Secretary of the Road Transport and Highways Division. The Ministry of Public Administration issued a notification in this regard on Monday. Haque had been serving as an Additional Secretary of the same ministry. Earlier Md Ehsanul Haque, who had been performing duties as the Senior Secretary of the Road Transport and Highways Division on a contractual basis, was transferred to the Ministry of Public Administration on October 12. Ziaul Haque had been carrying out the routine responsibilities of the Secretary of the Road Transport and Highways Division before his formal appointment.  

Bangladesh Bank’s gross foreign exchange reserves have crossed US $32.72 billion on Monday. Arif Hossain Khan, Executive Director and spokesperson of Bangladesh Bank confirmed this through an official statement. However, the foreign exchange reserves stood at $28.03 billion by the BPM6 method. On December 1, gross reserves stood at $26.51 billion based on this method. Probe report submission on Bangladesh Bank reserve heist deferred to Jan 13 This indicates that reserves have grown by approximately $1.5 billion within just 20 days. Central bank officials attributed this growth primarily to the strategic purchase of dollars from commercial banks through scheduled auctions and the rising trend of remittance.

Regarding the allegations of mismanagement of funds related to the Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant (NPP) by the previous government, Russian Ambassador to Bangladesh Alexander Grigoryevich Khozin on Monday said they are not in a position to comment on the political processes in the country, including the allegations. “However, I would like to note that at all times in Bangladesh, both on the part of the Customer and the supervising agencies, we have seen a focus on cooperation with the Russian party and willingness to discuss the requirements of our joint project - the first NPP in Bangladesh,” he said when his comments sought on allegations of mismanagement of Rooppur NPP’s fund. In all aspects, the Ambassador said, the issues of proper utilization of funds require careful control and documentation during project implementation. He said the Rooppur NPP project has ensured maximum transparency in the acceptance and signing of milestone achievement certificates for all types of works as well as manufacturing and supply of equipment. The envoy said his country has rescheduled the loan repayment deadline to September 15, 2028 for Rooppur NPP. “According to the amended Protocol to the aforementioned Agreement, approved by the Ministries of Finance of Russia and Bangladesh, the first installment of the loan repayment is now scheduled for September 15, 2028,” said the Ambassador while responding to a question. During his first interaction with a small group of journalists since his arrival in Dhaka, he said in July of this year, the parties agreed to adjust the repayment schedule for the main loan obligation. Specifically, in view of the extension of the Intergovernmental Credit Agreement (IGCA), the commencement of the main debt repayment has been deferred by 1.5 years, he said. Extension of the IGCA, as well as the Letter of Credit, indicates renewal of the state export credit provision to the Government of the People’s Republic of Bangladesh for financing the construction of Rooppur NPP, said the Ambassador. “That ensured continuity of financial operations for the Project.” At the moment, he said, the work is focused on commissioning Unit No.1 of Rooppur NPP, which is at the final stage of readiness: final works and execution of the necessary documentation are being actively implemented. “A set of activities is currently underway, including: performance of final construction and erection, as well as start-up and adjustment works; passing mandatory checks and inspections; and obtaining authorization documents from the regulatory authorities,” he said. Ambassador Khozin emphasized that successful and timely completion of the project is the result of well-coordinated work of the whole team. “Prompt feedback and efficient interaction with the Customer allow us to effectively solve arising problems and move towards achievement of the target,” he said. As early as next year, the envoy said, they plan to start supplying the first megawatts of electricity to the power grid system of the People's Republic of Bangladesh. This will be an important milestone in implementation of the project and will confirm its readiness for full-scale operation, he said. “We are making all necessary efforts and systematic progress towards commissioning of the facility,” the Russian Ambassador said. Dhaka University Central Students’ Union (DUCSU) Vice-President Abu Shadik Kayem has declined government-provided gunman support, saying security should be ensured for all citizens, not just a few individuals. In a Facebook post on Monday night, Kayem said the government had recently decided to provide gunmen to student leaders of the July uprising, leaders of various political parties and media personalities. He said he was informed about the decision but chose not to accept the offer for himself. Following the fall of the Hasina government, Kayem said people expected visible and fair changes in the country’s overall security system. However, he claimed that public security continues to be disrupted due to the ineffective role of law enforcement agencies and the direct or indirect support of what he termed fascist forces within various institutions. He said if law enforcement agencies were effectively activated and criminals brought to justice, public concern over security would not be so acute. Referring to recent incidents, Kayem said that while top criminals are released on bail and roam freely, leaders such as Osman Hadi have been killed and the perpetrators remain at large. “At the same time, there are proposals to provide gunmen for personal security. I am reluctant to accept this reality,” he wrote. Kayem acknowledged that security is necessary for everyone but stressed that it should not be limited to select individuals or groups. “Our demand is to build a safe and just Bangladesh for all,” he said. Bangladesh provides gunmen for 20 individuals on hit lists He added that as long as students and the general public remain unsafe, he does not consider it appropriate to accept gunman support solely for personal protection. Earlier today, Home Affairs Adviser Jahangir Alam Chowdhury said the interim government of Bangladesh has assigned gunmen to 20 individuals who were on alleged hit lists doing the rounds and facing security risks. “Those who are on hit lists or concerned about their security have already been given gunmen,” he told reporters after a meeting on the law and order situation at the secretariat.  

Special trains will operate on ten routes on December 25 to facilitate travel to Dhaka for BNP leaders and supporters on the occasion of its Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman’s return to Bangladesh. The central and regional BNP offices requested the Railway Ministry for special trains and additional coaches, the ministry said in a press release on Monday. Special trains will run on 10 routes, and additional coaches will be added to several regular services. As a result, the short-distance Rajbari Commuter (Rajbari-Poradah), Dhalarchar Express (Pabna-Rajshahi), and Rohanpur Commuter (Rohanpur-Rajshahi) trains will be suspended for the day. The ministry expressed regret for any inconvenience to passengers. The special trains will operate on Cox’s Bazar–Dhaka–Cox’s Bazar, Jamalpur–Mymensingh–Dhaka–Jamalpur, Tangail–Dhaka–Tangail, Bhairab Bazar–Narsingdi–Dhaka–Narsingdi–Bhairab Bazar, Joydebpur–Dhaka Cantonment–Joydebpur, Panchagarh–Dhaka–Panchagarh, Khulna–Dhaka–Khulna, Chatmohar–Dhaka Cantonment–Chatmohar, Rajshahi–Dhaka–Rajshahi, and Jashore–Dhaka– Jashore routes. Additional coaches will also be attached to select regular trains based on demand. Bangladesh Railway expects to collect an estimated Tk 36 lakh from the special services. The ministry said all operations will comply with the Election Code of Conduct-2025.  

A car bomb killed a Russian general on Monday, the third such killing of a senior military officer in just over a year. Investigators said Ukraine may be behind the attack. Lt. Gen. Fanil Sarvarov, head of the Operational Training Directorate of the Russian Armed Forces' General Staff, died from his injuries, said Svetlana Petrenko, the spokesperson for Russia’s Investigative Committee, the nation's top criminal investigation agency. He was 56. “Investigators are pursuing numerous lines of inquiry regarding the murder. One of these is that the crime was orchestrated by Ukrainian intelligence services,” Petrenko said. Since Moscow sent troops into Ukraine nearly four years ago, Russian authorities have blamed Kyiv for several assassinations of military officers and public figures in Russia. Ukraine has claimed responsibility for some of them. It has not yet commented on Monday’s death. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said that President Vladimir Putin had been immediately informed about the killing of Sarvarov, who fought in Chechnya and had taken part in Moscow's military campaign in Syria. Russia has blamed a series of other apparent assassinations on Ukraine. Just over a year ago, Lt. Gen. Igor Kirillov, the chief of the military’s nuclear, biological and chemical protection forces, was killed by a bomb hidden on an electric scooter outside his apartment building. Kirillov's assistant also died. Ukraine’s security service claimed responsibility for the attack. An Uzbek man was quickly arrested and charged with killing Kirillov on behalf of the Ukrainian security service. Putin described Kirillov’s killing as a “major blunder” by Russia’s security agencies, noting they should learn from it and improve their efficiency. In April, another senior Russian military officer, Lt. Gen. Yaroslav Moskalik, a deputy head of the main operational department in the General Staff, was killed by an explosive device placed in his car parked near his apartment building just outside Moscow. A suspected perpetrator was quickly arrested. Days after Moskalik's killing, Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said he received a report from the head of Ukraine’s foreign intelligence agency on the “liquidation” of top Russian military figures, adding that “justice inevitably comes" although he didn't mention Moskalik's name. Ukraine, which is outnumbered by Russia’s larger, better equipped military, has frequently tried to change the course of the conflict by attacking in unexpected ways. In August last year, Ukrainian forces staged a surprise incursion into Russia’s Kursk region even as they struggled to stem Russian offensives on many parts of the front line. Moscow's troops eventually drove them out, but the incursion distracted the Russian military resources from other areas and raised Ukrainian morale. Ukraine has also launched repeated attacks on the Russian navy in the Black Sea with sea drones and missiles, forcing it to relocate its warships and limit the scale of its operations. And in June, swarms of drones launched from trucks targeted bomber bases across Russia. Ukraine said over 40 long-range bombers were damaged or destroyed, although Moscow said only several planes were struck. Meanwhile, Western officials have accused Russia of staging a campaign away from the battlefield, accusing it of orchestrating dozens of incidents of disruption and sabotage across Europe as part of an effort to sap support for Ukraine. Moscow has denied the claims.

Inqilab Moncho on Monday demanded that justice for the killing of its founder Osman Hadi be ensured before the 13th parliamentary election and any proposed referendum, warning that no election would be acceptable without holding Hadi's killerss accountable. Speaking at an emergency press conference in front of the National Museum at Shahbag around noon, Inqilab Moncho Member Secretary Abdullah Al Jaber, who is the said the platform would not leave the streets until the killers and their patrons are brought to justice. “We will not accept a rushed election without knowing who killed Osman Hadi. Justice must be ensured before the election. There will be no election before that,” Jaber said. He also called for the formation of a special judicial tribunal and urged the government to involve international investigative agencies such as the FBI and Scotland Yard to ensure a credible and transparent investigation. “Form a judicial tribunal immediately and involve agencies like the FBI and Scotland Yard. Osman Hadi was not created to negotiate or compromise for the sake of so-called government stability while his killers roam free,” Jaber added. At a rally at the Central Shaheed Minar after the march, Inqilab Moncho DU unit spokesperson Fatima Tasnim Juma expressed strong resentment over what she termed delays in ensuring justice. She directly warned Home Affairs Adviser Lt Gen (retd) Jahangir Alam Chowdhury, saying there would be no scope to evade responsibility through silence or resignation. Jaber further warned that if the killers of Osman Hadi are not arrested within 30 working days, the interim government — including political parties and law enforcement agencies — would have to take responsibility for any situation arising in the country. He reiterated that the issue of justice for Hadi and the election are separate, adding, “The election will be held in due course, but we have given one month for justice. Dismantling the entire network behind the killing is the true meaning of justice.” Inqilab Moncho issues another 24-hour ultimatum with 3 demands Osman Hadi was shot at close range on December 12 around 2:15pm while travelling by rickshaw near the Bijaynagar water tank area in the capital. Two assailants on a motorcycle opened fire and fled the scene. He was initially taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital and later shifted to Evercare Hospital. He was subsequently flown to Singapore for advanced treatment, where he died on Thursday. Following his janaza at the South Plaza of the National Parliament on Saturday, Hadi was laid to rest beside the graveyard of national poet Kazi Nazrul Islam.    

BNP Standing Committee member Amir Khosru Mahmud Chowdhury on Monday said those who do not want elections are behind the recent incidents of violence, attacks and instability in the country. “The concentration of power in the hands of the government is not good for any state; the power of the people is what strengthens a state,” he told journalists after a Trade Dialogue organised by the Chittagong Divisional Business Forum at a hotel in the port city. Saying that democracy aims to balance state power through people’s participation, he added, “Our goal is to build a democratic state based on the power of the people.” Amir Khosru said democracy cannot be ensured by democratising politics alone, stressing the need to uphold the rights of all citizens. “To achieve this, we must create a proper environment and dismantle the concentration of power in the hands of the corrupt,” he said. Highlighting BNP’s economic vision, he said the party wants to reduce bureaucratic control and empower businesspeople to facilitate trade and investment. “We want to take everything out of bureaucratic control and place it in the hands of businesspeople. For this, their capacity must be enhanced,” he said. He said BNP plans to provide back-to-back facilities for future exporters and introduce automation across all sectors. “A supervisory committee will be formed, and a one-stop automated service will be introduced for container handling and required permissions,” he added. Regarding the banking sector, Amir Khosru said it has fallen into turmoil because Bangladesh Bank acted under instructions of the previous government. “This has created a dangerous situation in the banking sector,” he said. He then spoke said institutions should be allowed to function independently instead of being politicised. Replying to a question, he said many believe those who oppose elections, or want to delay it, are also responsible for the current spate of violence the country has been witnessing.  He added that the situation would change once BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman returned to the country, by providing much-needed leadership.  Amir Khosru further said that if BNP comes to power, accountability will be ensured across institutions as well as among politicians. Gold prices in Bangladesh have surged again within 24 hours, setting a new all-time high as the Bangladesh Jewellers Association (BAJUS) on Monday (December 22, 2025) raised the price of 22-carat gold by Tk 3,966 per bhori. With the latest adjustment, the price of 22-carat gold has been fixed at Tk 222,083 per bhori (11.664 grams), the highest ever in the country’s history. In a notification issued on Monday night, BAJUS said the price of pure gold (tejbai) has increased in the local market. Considering the overall situation, the association decided to revise gold prices, which will come into effect from Tuesday morning (December 23, 2025). Read more: What Does Gold Carat Mean? Decoding Gold Purity Levels According to the new rates, 21-carat gold will cost Tk 211,993 per bhori, 18-carat gold Tk 181,725 per bhori, while gold under the traditional method has been priced at Tk 151,399 per bhori. In addition to the selling price, buyers will have to pay a mandatory 5 percent VAT set by the government and a minimum 6 percent making charge fixed by BAJUS. However, the making charge may vary depending on the design and quality of the jewellery, the association said. BAJUS last revised gold prices on Sunday, when it raised the price of 22-carat gold by Tk 1,050 per bhori to Tk 218,117 — then the highest price ever recorded in the country. So far this year, gold prices have been adjusted 88 times in the domestic market, with prices increased on 61 occasions and reduced 27 times. Under the new rates, 21-carat silver will cost Tk 4,724 per bhori, 18-carat silver Tk 4,082 per bhori, and silver under the traditional method Tk 3,033 per bhori.

Shipping Adviser Brigadier General (Retd) Dr. M Sakhawat Hossain on Monday said that Bangladesh Shipping Corporation’s (BSC) fleet will be expanded with the addition of three new ships within the next six months. The ships will be acquired using government funding and BSC’s own resources, he said while speaking at the 48th annual general meeting of BSC held at the Patenga Boat Club in Chattogram. Dr. Sakhawat Hossain, who is also the Chairman of the BSC Board of Directors, said that BSC has purchased two bulk carrier ships for the first time using its own funds. The first ship, M.V. Banglar Pragati, has already joined the fleet and is engaged in trade, while the second, M.V. Banglar Navjatra, is scheduled to be added in January 2026. He further said initiatives are underway to purchase two ready-made MR tankers with government funding and one ready-made bulk carrier with BSC’s own funding. A feasibility study has been completed through IIFC, and a development project proposal has been submitted to the Ministry of Shipping. To enhance the country’s energy security, a shipbuilding agreement has been signed with China on a G2G basis to construct two crude oil mother tankers with a capacity of 114,000 metric tons each and two mother bulk carriers with a capacity of 81,500 metric tons. A letter of consent for project financing has been received from the Chinese government, and the loan application is under process, he added. Chattogram Port to increase tariff by 30 percent: Shipping Adviser In addition, plans are underway to acquire 12 cellular container ships with a capacity of 2,500 to 3,000 TEUs to boost participation in container transport. Of these, construction of six ships with support from the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank is already in progress, Dr. Sakhawat Hossain said. Earlier, BSC Managing Director Commodore Mahmudul Malek presented the financial report for the 2024-25 fiscal year at the AGM, stating that the corporation posted a net profit of Tk 306.56 crore after tax adjustment — the highest in its 54-year history.

Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus on Monday (December 22, 2025) reiterated his commitment to holding the general election on February 12 next. "The nation is eagerly waiting to exercise their voting rights which were stolen by the autocratic regime," he said. Prof Yunus made the remarks during a telephone conversation with Sergio Gor, the US Special Envoy for South and Central Asia, at around 7:30 pm (Dhaka time). The discussion, which lasted for about half an hour, focused on trade and tariff negotiations between Bangladesh and the United States, the upcoming general election, the country’s democratic transition, and the murder of young Bangladeshi political activist Sharif Osman Hadi. The Chief Adviser noted that supporters of the ousted autocratic regime were allegedly spending millions of dollars to disrupt the electoral process and that their fugitive leader was inciting violence.  He, however, said the interim government was “fully prepared” to deal with any challenges. Bangladesh has suspended all visa and consular services from its Missions in New Delhi and Agartala. “Due to unavoidable circumstances, all consular & visa services from the Bangladesh High Commission in New Delhi are temporarily suspended until further notice,” said the High Commission in its notice, adding, “Any inconvenience caused is sincerely regretted.” Bangladesh Assistant High Commission Agartala also issued a similar notice. “This is to inform all concerned that due to unavoidable circumstances all visa and consular services at the Bangladesh Assistant High Commission in Agartala will remain closed from tomorrow, 23 December 2025, until further notice.” Keeping humanitarian needs in mind and despite the evolving security situation, the High Commission of India continues to operate the visa centers at Dhaka, Khulna, Sylhet and Rajshahi, said officials at the Indian Visa Application Centre.  Read more: Offline Indian visa services remain suspended in Khulna High Commissioner Pranay Verma visited the Indian Visa Application Center (IVAC) at the Jamuna Future Park on Monday to take stock of the functioning of the visa services.  He also interacted with visa applicants, many of whom were applying for medical visas to go to India for treatment. Given the "serious threats" last week at the Indian High Commission and its installations in Bangladesh, HCI had to shut down the operations at IVAC, JFP for a day last week, officials at IVAC said.  It was later opened and all the applicants whose appointment slots fell on that day were given an early alternative slot. Several people who apply for visas are travelling to India for treatment of serious medical conditions.  The IVAC at Chittagong is temporarily shut down following the mob attack at the entrance of AHCI Chittagong in the night of 18-19 December during which stone pelting and threats to break the entrance created serious insecurities for the AHC and other officials who live inside the same premises. At least five people were injured when a cocktail was hurled in a clash between the National Citizen Party (NCP) and the BNP's student front, Chhatra Dal, in Shariatpur , police said. The incident occurred on Monday evening during a protest procession by NCP leaders and activists through the Chowrangi area of Shariatpur city. The procession was held to demand justice for the slain Inqilab Moncho spokesperson Sharif Osman Bin Hadi and the attack on Motaleb Shikder, 42, a leader of the NCP's in Khulna. Tensions rose during the procession when a disagreement broke out over the entry of a Chhatra Dal activist’s motorcycle, triggering a clash. At one stage, a cocktail explosion left at least five people injured. Leaders and activists of both parties have blamed each other for the violence. Police reached the spot shortly after being informed and brought the situation under control.

Clash of two rival groups over dominance in Habiganj’s Nabiganj upazila injured more than 50 people on Monday afternoon. According to police and local sources, the clash took place in Mandarkandi village of Kaliarbhanga union. The violence broke out following a long-standing dispute between two groups - one led jointly by Samu and Abdul Hair and another led by Muhit Mia. The dispute involved agricultural land and local influence in the area. Men and women from both sides took part in the clash, using locally made weapons and throwing bricks and stones at each other. The fighting continued for nearly two hours. Police from Nabiganj police station rushed to the spot and brought the situation under control. Later, a team from the Baniachong Army Camp also went to the area and helped restore normalcy. Hadi killing sparks unrest in Habiganj The injured were rescued and taken to Nabiganj Upazila Health Complex and Habiganj Modern Sadar Hospital for treatment. Monayem Mia, Officer-in-Charge of Nabiganj Police Station, confirmed the incident and said, “The situation is now under control.” He added that extra police have been deployed in the area to prevent further trouble.    

The government has expected that inflation in the country will fall below 7 percent by June 2026 ‘due to its contractionary monetary policy and austerity measures. The expectation was expressed at a high-level meeting at the state guest house Jamuna on the country’s overall economic progress and budget expenditure on Monday under the leadership of Chief Adviser Prof Muhammad Yunus, according to a statement of the Chief Adviser’s press wing. Finance Adviser Salehuddin Ahmed, Planning Adviser Wahiduddin Mahmud and Bangladesh Bank Governor Ahsan H Mansur attended the meeting. The meeting reviewed key macroeconomic indicators, including inflation, wage growth, agricultural production, the financial and external sectors, remittance inflows, imports and the opening of letters of credit. Read more: Bangladesh inflation rises to 8.29% in November The 12-month average general inflation rate fell below 9 percent in November 2025 for the first time since June 2023 and on a point-to-point basis, inflation crossed 9 percent in March 2023, reaching 9.33 percent, it said. The point-to-point inflation dropped below 9 percent in June 2025 and declined further to 8.29 percent in November 2025. Regarding wage growth, the meeting observed that in recent years the gap between inflation and wage growth had been wide, resulting in a decline in real income. In recent months of the current fiscal year, the gap has narrowed significantly. In November 2025, point-to-point inflation and wage growth stood at 8.29 percent and 8.04 percent respectively, compared with average rates of 9.02 percent and 7.04 percent in fiscal year 2022-23. On agriculture, the meeting noted that appropriate incentives and management led to a good Boro harvest in the last fiscal year, while favorable conditions so far indicate the possibility of a good Aman harvest this season. As of December 15, 2025, Aman rice production reached 16.095 million metric tonnes, and officials expect the final output to exceed the target once harvesting is completed. Although Aus rice production fell slightly short of the target, total production increased by 7.20 percent compared to fiscal year 2024-25, said the Press Wing. Imbalances in various economic indicators have already moved towards a more stable position, said the statement. On the financial and external sectors, the meeting was informed that gross foreign exchange reserves stood at 32.57 billion US dollars as of December 18, 2025, up from around 25 billion dollars in August 2024. The reserve levels are expected to rise further due to a more stable exchange rate, increased remittance inflows and a significant rise in interest rates in the financial sector, it added. Regarding the current account, it was noted that Bangladesh had recorded consecutive deficits from fiscal year 2016-17 to 2023-24, amounting to 18.7 billion dollars, 11.6 billion dollars and 6.6 billion dollars in fiscal years 2021-22, 2022-23 and 2023-24 respectively. Due to improved financial management and measures to curb money laundering, the deficit narrowed to just 139 million dollars at the end of fiscal year 2024-25. In the July to October period of the current fiscal year the deficit stood at 749 million dollars. On remittances, the meeting noted that overseas employment for 500,000 workers was secured during July to November of the current fiscal year, compared with 397,000 during the same period last year. During the same period, remittance inflows amounted to 13.04 billion dollars, marking a 17.14 percent increase year on year. Import growth during July to November of fiscal year 2024-25 was negative at 1.2 percent but rose to 6.1 percent during the same period of fiscal year 2025-26, it said. A three-day Saarc regional training on development of inventory for livestock origin greenhouse gases and its mitigation by appropriate feeding strategy in South Asia, began on Monday (22 December 2025) in virtual mode. The event brings together policymakers, scientists and development professionals from South Asian countries. The training is being organized by the Saarc Agriculture Centre (SAC) with the objective of strengthening regional capacity to assess livestock-origin greenhouse gas emissions and promote practical mitigation measures through improved feeding strategies. The Chief Guest, SM Mahbubul Alam, Director General (Saarc and BIMSTEC) at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, highlighted the growing importance of climate-smart livestock practices in regional and global policy discussions. He noted that South Asia must align its livestock development strategies with international climate commitments while safeguarding the interests of smallholder farmers. He also emphasized that regional cooperation and evidence-based policymaking are essential for achieving sustainable and inclusive growth in the livestock sector. Tanvir Ahmad Torophder, Director (ARD & SDF) at the Saarc Secretariat in Nepal, spoke as Special Guest and reaffirmed Saarc’s commitment to promoting regional cooperation in climate-resilient agriculture and sustainable livestock development. Dr. Md. Harunur Rashid, Director, SAC, in inaugural speech highlighted the critical role of livestock in ensuring food security, nutrition and rural livelihoods in South Asia. He mentioned that the sector is also a significant contributor to greenhouse gas emissions, particularly methane and nitrous oxide. Emphasizing the need for balance, he stressed that reliable emission inventories and science-based feeding interventions are essential to reduce environmental impacts without compromising productivity.    

In a major step toward digitizing the nation’s energy infrastructure, Petrobangla, the state carbohydron agency, and the Bangladesh Machine Tools Factory Limited (BMTF) signed a contract on Monday to implement a sophisticated GPS-based monitoring system for gas metering stations. The contract was signed at the boardroom of the Bangladesh Oil, Gas & Mineral Corporation (Petrobangla). The project, titled ‘Designing, Development, Implementation, Commissioning and Maintenance of GPS Location Based Gas Meters and Metering Stations Monitoring Management System,’ aims to bring transparency and efficiency to gas distribution across industrial sectors. Under the agreement, BMTF, a commercial entity that is run by the Bangladesh Army, will develop and maintain a digital management system that monitors the pressure, temperature, and exact quantity of gas consumed by industrial establishments. This real-time data will allow Petrobangla's production and marketing companies to manage resources more effectively. Beyond simple measurement, the system is designed to address several long-standing technical challenges including prevention of unauthorized access to Regulating and Metering Station (RMS) rooms; resolving "pulse missing" issues and preventing excessive load usage by consumers and enabling area-based supply monitoring and category-based consumption analysis. A key feature of the project is the integration of ‘Artificial Intelligence (AI)’ and Large Language Model (LLM) technology. Officials stated that this advanced tech will pave the way for full billing system automation in the future, reducing human error and operational delays. The agreement was signed by Md. Amzad Hossain, Secretary (Senior General Manager) of Petrobangla, and Lt. Colonel ASM Fakhrul Islam Chowdhury, PSC, EB, representing BMTF. The signing ceremony was witnessed by Md. Rezanur Rahman, Chairman of Petrobangla, and Major General Md. Naheed Asgar, Managing Director of BMTF. Other senior officials from both organizations were also in attendance.

BNP Senior Joint Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi on Monday said the recent incidents of mob violence and attacks on different institutions are putting the restoration of democracy at risk. “Attacks are launched one after another across the country over various issues. If this continues, democracy will never become strong,” he said. The BNP leader made the remarks while speaking to reporters after paying tributes at the grave of late President Ziaur Rahman at Sher-e-Bangla Nagar, along the members of newly announced central committee of Jatiyatabadi Muktijuddher Projonmo. Rizvi said people have been deprived of their voting rights for the last 17 years. “People are eager to vote, but a group is trying to destroy this opportunity in a planned way. We call upon everyone not to allow such evil efforts.” Criticising former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, he said the Awami League government wasted public money by purchasing electricity from abroad under an unequal agreement. The BNP leader also alleged that the Awami League regime created opportunities for looting public funds and siphoned off huge amounts of money abroad. Praising engineer Ishraque Hossain, convener of the newly formed committee, Rizvi said the young BNP leader and son of former undivided Dhaka City Mayor Sadeque Hossain Khoka set an example in the movement against fascism. He expressed hope that the Muktijuddher Projonmo, led by Ishraque, would play a key role in protecting the country’s independence and sovereignty. Speaking on the occasion, Ishraque said the nation has never seen such open attempts to undermine the Liberation War as it is witnessing now in the country’s 54-year history. “False and misleading information is being used to create confusion about the 1971 Liberation War by a party that tries to hide its role in 1971. This is shameful.” He said the forces that supported the mass uprising were expected to remain united for the restoration of democracy and people’s voting rights. “But we must ask whether we are truly united. Because of this disunity, a patriot like Sharif Osman Hadi was killed, and the criminals managed to escape.”

The government has urged the aspiring pilgrims who have completed primary registration for the 2026 Hajj, under government or private arrangement, to deposit the remaining amount of their Hajj package by December 31. The Hajj-1 wing of the Religious Affairs Ministry, issued a notice in this regard on Monday. According to the notice, the primary registration for Hajj 2026 has been completed through the deposit of Tk 3,50,000 by pilgrims under both government and private management. According to the Hajj Package and Guidelines 2026, every pilgrim is required to deposit the full package amount by December 31, 2025. All pilgrims, who were set to go to Saudi Arabia for Hajj 2026, who have not yet deposited the full amount of their selected package are requested to ensure payment of the remaining package money by December 31, 2025, said the notice. Hajj journeys exempted from excise duty It also warned that failure to deposit the remaining package amount within the stipulated time would make the pilgrim’s Hajj journey uncertain. This year, the holy Hajj is expected to be held on May 26, subject to moon sighting. Bangladesh’s Hajj quota for this year is 127,198 pilgrims.        

Police on Monday recovered the hanging body of a staff member of a District and Sessions Judge Court from a tree near the Fatehpur railway line in Feni. The deceased was identified as Enamul Haque, son of the late Fazlul Haque of Nagarkanda village in Panch Gachia union of Sadar upazila. His body was found at around 11:30 am. Enamul had been serving as the head clerk of the Joint District and Sessions Judge 1st Court of Feni for a long time. He lived with his family in a rented house at Momena Mansion in Barahipur area of the city. According to locals, a speech-impaired person spotted Haque’s body hanging from a tree in a bush near the railway line and alerted nearby residents, who then informed the police. Police recovered the body and sent it to the Feni General Hospital morgue, said Feni Sadar Circle Additional Superintendent of Police Nishat Tabassum.  She added that authorities are working to unravel the circumstances of the death, and the cause will be determined after an autopsy. Legal action will follow once a formal complaint is lodged by the family. Nizam Hazari’s house set on fire in Feni The deceased’s son, Ehsanul Haque Saikat, said his father left home for the office around 7:00am.  He received news of the incident around 11:30am and rushed to the scene.  He alleged that his father may have been murdered and demanded that those responsible be punished after a proper investigation.

Chief Adviser Prof Muhammad Yunus on Monday said voting right is not anyone’s charity as it is people’s constitutional right. “By exercising this right we decide which path our future will take. Ensuring a free, fair and participatory election is not only the responsibility of the government but of every citizen of the state,” the Chief Adviser said in a video message marking the launch of an awareness campaign on the election and the referendum at Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban. A nationwide awareness campaign for the 13th parliamentary election and the referendum on the July National Charter began with 10 vote vehicles-Super Caravan. Prof Yunus described the Super Caravan as more than just vehicles as they carry the joyful message of democracy and will remind people how important a single vote is and how participation, not apathy, strengthens democracy. He urged young people, women voters and first-time voters to come forward, ask questions, seek information, understand the issues and cast their votes. “Your decisions will shape tomorrow’s Bangladesh, a new Bangladesh.” He said the government is committed to ensuring an election environment free from fear and obstacles where people can express their views freely and without intimidation. “You are the owners of the country. You will decide who will run it for the next five years. Vote for your preferred candidate. Choose honest and capable candidates and vote with careful thought,” he said. He said the 10 Super Caravan vehicles will travel in all 64 districts and 300 upazilas of the country to disseminate information on the election and the referendum, raise awareness about voting rights and spread the message of democracy. The Chief Adviser said voters will cast an additional vote in the upcoming referendum on the July National Charter which was prepared through months of discussions with all political parties. “If you endorse it, I believe the charter would help guide the country safely for many years. If you support this charter, please vote yes in the referendum,” he said. Prof Yunus urged all to make the democratic journey successful by voting for themselves, for the country and for future generations. Inqilab Moncho has announced another 24-hour ultimatum over its three-point demands and declared that it will take a “Shaheedi Oath” tomorrow at 3:00 pm in Shahbagh. The announcement was made by Inqilab Mancha Member Secretary Abdullah Al Jaber around 4:00 pm on Monday at the Central Shaheed Minar, after leading a protest march from in front of the National Museum in Shahbagh. The three demands include conducting investigations through a speedy judicial tribunal with the involvement of international intelligence agencies such as the FBI and Scotland Yard; identifying and prosecuting Awami League collaborators hidden within civil and military intelligence; and ensuring that the Home Affairs Adviser, his Special Assistant, and the Law Adviser first provide explanations and then resign from their posts. Information and Broadcasting Adviser Syeda Rizwana Hasan on Monday directed officials to prepare a detailed work calendar within the next two days outlining the communication plan and its implementation framework for the upcoming referendum and the 13th parliamentary election scheduled for 2026. She also stressed the need to continue initiatives aimed at informing voters about the key issues of the referendum and its far-reaching benefits, saying sustained and well-coordinated publicity efforts are essential to ensure meaningful public participation. The adviser made the remarks while addressing a virtual coordination meeting with district information officers to review the progress of grassroots-level publicity activities ahead of the referendum and the 13th parliamentary election. She said that joint and coordinated campaigns would help enhance public engagement in the electoral process, adding that citizens should actively take part in the referendum if they seek positive changes in the state structure and the reflection of people’s hopes and aspirations. Cultural Affairs Adviser Mostofa Sarwar Farooki praised the Information and Broadcasting Ministry for its ongoing publicity drive, noting that the pace of work could be further intensified by maintaining the current momentum. He said a leaflet featuring a demonstration of the referendum process is almost finalised and would further enrich campaign activities once followed. Farooki also instructed the concerned officials to involve district information offices in the ‘Voter’s Vehicle’ initiative being implemented by the Ministry of Cultural Affairs. Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives Adviser Adilur Rahman Khan said better results could be achieved if offices under the Local Government Division worked in close coordination with the election-related publicity programmes of the Information and Broadcasting Ministry and the Ministry of Cultural Affairs. In his welcome address, Information and Broadcasting Secretary Mahbuba Farzana highlighted the initiatives being undertaken by the ministry in view of the referendum and the 13th parliamentary election. She said the Department of Mass Communication is conducting intensive publicity campaigns through 64 district information offices and four upazila information offices, with the objective of ensuring active public participation in the referendum process. She added that the upcoming vote would safeguard people’s rights, bring positive change to the country and contribute effectively to ensuring citizens’ rights within the governance system. Special programmes have been designed for first-time voters, young voters, women voters and voters from small ethnic communities. These groups will be provided with practical demonstrations of the referendum and election processes. Region-based popular folk music has also been included as part of the awareness campaign. The meeting was also addressed by Cultural Affairs Secretary Md Mofidul Rahman, Local Government Division Secretary Md Rezaul Maksud Zahedi and Director General of the Department of Mass Communication Md Abdul Jalil. The online meeting on publicity matters was attended by the heads of 68 district information offices. Israel’s Cabinet has approved plans for 19 new Jewish settlements in the occupied West Bank, further accelerating settlement expansion that critics say undermines prospects for a future Palestinian state. Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich said the decision raises the total number of newly approved settlements in recent years to 69, the highest on record. The latest approvals include two settlements that were evacuated during Israel’s 2005 disengagement plan. According to the anti-settlement group Peace Now, the move increases the number of West Bank settlements by nearly 50 percent under the current far-right government. There were 141 settlements in 2022, a figure that has now risen to 210. Settlements are widely regarded as illegal under international law. Smotrich’s office said the Cabinet approved the decision on Dec 11, though it had not been made public until now. The decision includes retroactive legalization of some settlement outposts and approval of construction on land from which Palestinians had previously been evacuated. The move comes as the United States is pressing Israel and Hamas to advance the second phase of a Gaza ceasefire that includes discussion of a possible pathway to a Palestinian state, an outcome settlement expansion is widely seen as obstructing. Two of the settlements legalized in the latest decision are Kadim and Ganim, which were dismantled in 2005 as part of Israel’s withdrawal from Gaza. Israel repealed the law barring resettlement of those areas in 2023. Israel captured the West Bank, east Jerusalem and Gaza in the 1967 war. More than 500,000 Jews now live in West Bank settlements, in addition to over 200,000 in east Jerusalem. The current government includes strong supporters of the settler movement. Settlement expansion has coincided with a surge in settler violence against Palestinians in recent months. The United Nations has reported a sharp rise in attacks, including arson, vandalism and destruction of farmland, with limited intervention by Israeli authorities. Meanwhile, the Palestinian Health Ministry said two Palestinians, including a 16-year-old, were killed in clashes with Israeli forces in the northern West Bank on Saturday night. Israel’s military said the incidents involved militants attacking troops and that at least one case is under review. Israel has intensified military operations in the West Bank since the Oct 7, 2023, Hamas-led attack that triggered the ongoing war in Gaza.

Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) has intensified surveillance and set up check-posts along the border points of Benapole, Kushtia and Meherpur following the shooting of a National Citizen Party (NCP) leader in Khulna. In Benapole, the BGB has intensified the security along the border so that the suspected attackers cannot flee to the neighbouring country in India, said Commanding officer of Jashore BGB-49 Battalion, Lt Col Saifullah Siddiqui. BGB ramped up security along approximately 70.27 kilometres of the border under the jurisdiction of 49 BGB, stretching from main pillar 18/1S to 47/3S. Patrols, intelligence surveillance and the deployment of additional BGB personnel have been increased in risky and important border areas. Besides, the areas without the barbed wire fencing along the bordering areas have been sealed off, he said. Meanwhile, additional BGB members have been deployed in Amrakhali, Sadipur, raghunathpur, Ghiba, Sikarpur, shalkona, Kashipur, Masila, Andulia, Panch Bhulat, Agra Bhulat, Putkhali, Goga, Harishchandrapur and Panchpir Tala areas. UNB Kushtia Correspondent reports: BGB has also imposed high alert along the Kushtia and Meherpur border areas in connection with the same incident. According to BGB, surveillance has been intensified along the Gangni border in Meherpur and the Daulatpur border in Kushtia. Eight special check-posts have been set up at important points to prevent the suspects from fleeing the country. NCP labour leader shot, injured in Khulna Lieutenant Colonel Rashed Kamal Rony, Commanding officer of BGB-47, said “All effective measures have been taken so that no one involved in a criminal act can cross the border under any circumstances.” Motaleb Shikder, 42, a labour leader of the National Citizen Party (NCP) was injured in a gun attack in Khulna city on Monday.    

BNP senior leader Mirza Abbas on Monday said a sense of insecurity has gripped the nation even though the party prepares to welcome its Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman on his return home this week. “The entire nation is under a security fear at this moment. We are trying to ensure security as much as needed, and the rest is in Allah’s hands,” he said. Abbas, a BNP Standing Committee Member, made the remarks while responding to a question over whether there is any security concern around Tarique’s homecoming. Tarique Rahman to become voter on Dec 27: Salahuddin He talked to reporters during his visit to the party’s reception venue being set up at 300 Feet in the capital to welcome Tarique on his return home. Abbas said BNP is fully prepared to welcome Tarique Rahman, and his return will have political significance. “Tarique Rahman’s return is politically meaningful. His arrival will certainly have an impact across the country, and people are already discussing it,” he said. Abbas said BNP has not planned to gather lakhs of people for the reception programme, but spontaneous crowds may gather. Attacks on Daily Star, Prothom Alo a direct assault on democracy: Fakhrul “We did not plan for lakhs of people to assemble… Our Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman is coming, and there is an awakening among the people of the country. We hope that will be reflected,” the BNP leader said. He said they have not made any big plan to bring people from across the country. “But if such a gathering takes place, there is nothing we can do. People are inspired by Tarique Rahman’s return, and we expect a huge turnout,” Abbas said. Asked whether the BNP is getting cooperation from the interim government over arrangements, he said, “I cannot say how much cooperation we are getting, but there is no non-cooperation.” Law and order to improve ahead of election, hopes CEC Nasir Abbas also said people are waiting to see Tarique Rahman’s arrival, and the party hopes it will create a new wave of public enthusiasm. Tarique Rahman, who has been living in London since September 2008, is scheduled to return home on Thursday (Dec 25).

The United States on Sunday said its recent talks with Ukraine and European partners on ending the war with Russia were “productive and constructive,” as Washington continues diplomatic efforts to push for a negotiated peace. White House envoy Steve Witkoff said the discussions, held in Florida, focused on aligning a shared strategic approach among Ukraine, the United States and Europe. In a social media post, Witkoff said the common priority was to stop the fighting, ensure security guarantees and lay the groundwork for Ukraine’s long-term recovery and stability. He said peace must go beyond a halt in hostilities and provide a dignified and durable foundation for the future. The talks are part of President Donald Trump’s sustained push to end the nearly four-year war. However, efforts have faced obstacles as Moscow and Kyiv remain far apart, with Russian President Vladimir Putin maintaining tough demands while Russian forces continue gradual advances on the battlefield. Negotiations with Russia have also been ongoing. A Kremlin envoy said Saturday that discussions in Florida were progressing constructively and would continue. Russian media reported that envoy Kirill Dmitriev met Witkoff and Trump’s son-in-law Jared Kushner, though there were no updates on Sunday. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said diplomatic efforts were moving quickly, noting that Ukraine’s team in Florida had been working closely with the U.S. side. The Kremlin, however, denied that any trilateral talks involving Ukraine, Russia and the United States were under preparation. Meanwhile, Ukraine’s human rights ombudsman accused Russian forces of forcibly transferring around 50 civilians from the Sumy border region into Russia, demanding their immediate return. In Europe, France said it welcomed Putin’s reported openness to talks with President Emmanuel Macron, adding that renewed dialogue could be useful once prospects for a ceasefire and peace negotiations become clearer. Separately, European Union leaders agreed to provide 90 billion euros to support Ukraine’s military and economic needs over the next two years, funding the package through borrowing after failing to reach consensus on using frozen Russian assets.

A Malaysian court on Monday rejected former Prime Minister Najib Razak’s request to serve the remainder of his graft sentence under house arrest, ruling that a rare royal order he cited was not valid under constitutional requirements. The High Court said the house arrest was “not a valid order” as the king’s prerogative of mercy must follow the advice of the Pardons Board and cannot be issued independently. Najib’s lawyer, Muhammad Shafee Abdullah, said the former leader was disappointed and plans to appeal the verdict. Najib, 72, is serving a six-year prison term after the Pardons Board reduced his original 12-year sentence last year. He was convicted in 2020 for abuse of power, criminal breach of trust, and money laundering over 42 million ringgit ($10.3 million) linked to SRC International, a former unit of the 1MDB state fund. He began his sentence in August 2022, becoming Malaysia’s first ex-leader to be jailed. The court’s decision came days before a separate ruling in another graft trial, where Najib faces charges of abusing power and laundering more than $700 million from 1MDB. Conviction in that case could add decades to his sentence. Najib denies wrongdoing, claiming financier Low Taek Jho duped him; Low remains at large. The 1MDB scandal, which investigators say involved at least $4.5 billion stolen and laundered through international accounts for luxury purchases and Hollywood films, contributed to Najib’s government losing the 2018 election after ruling Malaysia since independence. Despite his conviction, he retains influence within the United Malays National Organization, now part of Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim’s unity government.  

Thailand and Cambodia will resume negotiations later this week to establish a more durable ceasefire along their shared border, Thailand’s Foreign Minister Sihasak Phuangketkeow said Monday, emphasizing that progress requires detailed bilateral talks rather than public statements that internationalize the dispute. Sihasak said the October ceasefire, rushed to coincide with U.S. President Donald Trump’s visit, lacked sufficient detail to ensure a lasting end to the armed conflict. He noted that while Cambodia publicly declared readiness for an unconditional ceasefire, Thailand had received no direct proposal, interpreting the statements as an effort to increase international pressure rather than resolve the crisis. The joint border committee of both nations is scheduled to meet Wednesday to work out specific measures to ensure a lasting ceasefire. “This time, let’s thrash out the details and make sure the ceasefire reflects the situation on the ground and is fully respected by both sides,” Sihasak told reporters. The border clashes intensified two weeks ago, derailing the July truce promoted by Trump, which had ended five days of fighting. The October agreement, formalized during a regional summit in Malaysia, aimed to add more detail to the truce, which included releasing prisoners and removing heavy weapons and land mines along the frontier. The conflict, stemming from disputed border territories, has killed more than three dozen people and displaced over half a million. Recent fighting involved Thai F-16 airstrikes and Cambodian BM-21 rocket attacks. Thailand has protested newly laid landmines that injured soldiers, while Cambodia claims they are remnants from its civil war. Sihasak called the new mine incidents “a clear violation” of the October agreement. Thai authorities said they discovered abandoned weapons and explosives in areas described as Cambodian strongholds, suggesting “deliberate use of anti-personnel landmines” against Thai troops. Thailand plans to send letters of protest to Cambodia and Zambia, the current chair of the Anti-Personnel Mine Ban Convention, to seek action under the convention. Cambodia has not responded to the claims. The U.S. State Department on Sunday urged both countries to end hostilities, withdraw heavy weapons, halt new landmine placements, and fully implement the Kuala Lumpur Peace Accords.  

Australian police on Monday said that Naveed Akram, accused of killing 15 people in the Bondi Beach attack, conducted firearms training with his father, Sajid Akram, in a New South Wales area outside Sydney prior to the massacre. Police documents released after Akram’s video court appearance from a Sydney hospital, where he is being treated for an abdominal injury, showed the pair had recorded footage justifying the meticulously planned attack. Officers shot Naveed Akram at the scene of the Dec. 14 attack and killed his 50-year-old father. The 24-year-old suspect was transferred from hospital to prison on Monday, though authorities did not disclose the facilities. According to the documents, the father-son duo began their assault by throwing four improvised explosive devices (IEDs) toward a crowd celebrating the Jewish festival of Hanukkah at Bondi Beach, but none detonated. Police described the devices as three aluminum pipe bombs and a tennis ball bomb containing explosives, gunpowder, and steel ball bearings, calling them “viable” IEDs. Before the attack, the pair rented a room in Sydney’s Campsie suburb for three weeks. CCTV footage showed them leaving at 2:16 a.m. with two shotguns, a rifle, five IEDs, and two homemade Islamic State flags wrapped in blankets. Police also released images of the attackers shooting from a footbridge, which provided an elevated position and partial cover behind concrete walls. The largest IED was later found in the trunk of Naveed Akram’s car, draped with the flags. Authorities have charged Akram with 59 offenses, including 15 counts of murder, 40 counts of causing harm with intent to murder, and one count of committing a terrorist act. The attack, targeting the Jewish community during Hanukkah, is Australia’s deadliest mass shooting since 1996. In response, the New South Wales government on Monday introduced draft laws that Premier Chris Minns said would be the toughest in Australia. The new rules would require Australian citizenship to qualify for a firearms license, which would have excluded Sajid Akram, an Indian citizen and permanent resident. New limits for recreational shooters would restrict ownership to a maximum of four guns, down from six, which Sajid Akram legally possessed. Police said videos recovered from Naveed Akram’s phone show him and his father expressing extremist political and religious views, condemning Zionists, and following an ideology linked to Islamic State. Footage from October also shows them conducting tactical firearms training in open grassland. Authorities allege the father and son meticulously planned the attack for several months. The Bondi beachfront returned to normal activity on Monday after an impromptu memorial near Bondi Pavilion was removed, while the Sydney Jewish Museum will preserve part of it. Funerals continued, including that of 27-year-old French national Dan Elkayam, one of the victims. Twelve wounded people remain hospitalized.    

Denmark and Greenland on Monday asserted that the United States will not take over Greenland, calling for full respect for their territorial integrity following President Donald Trump’s announcement of a special envoy to the Arctic territory. Trump on Sunday named Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry as the U.S. special envoy to Greenland, sparking renewed tensions over Washington’s interest in the semi-autonomous territory of the NATO ally. In response, Denmark’s Foreign Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen said he plans to summon the U.S. ambassador in Copenhagen. In a joint statement, Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen and Greenlandic Premier Jens-Frederik Nielsen said, “National borders and state sovereignty are rooted in international law. They are fundamental principles. You cannot annex another country, not even citing international security.” The statement added, “Greenland belongs to the Greenlanders and the U.S. shall not take over Greenland. We expect respect for our joint territorial integrity.” Trump has repeatedly suggested U.S. jurisdiction over Greenland and has not ruled out military options for the strategically located, resource-rich island. Earlier this year, Vice President JD Vance visited a U.S. military base in Greenland and criticized Denmark for underinvestment there. The issue re-emerged in August when Danish authorities summoned the U.S. ambassador after reports that individuals linked to Trump conducted covert influence operations in Greenland. Landry described his appointment as “an honor” and said he will work to “make Greenland a part of the U.S.” Rasmussen told Danish media that while the appointment shows continued American interest, “everyone — including the U.S. — must respect the territorial integrity of the Kingdom of Denmark.” Before the joint statement, Nielsen wrote on Facebook that the new U.S. announcement “does not change anything for us at home.” The EU also stressed the importance of Denmark’s sovereignty. An EU Commission spokesperson said Monday that preserving the territorial integrity and inviolability of Denmark’s borders is “essential for the European Union.”  

Climate risk insurance is becoming increasingly crucial for Bangladesh, one of the world’s most climate-vulnerable countries, but structural, technical, and policy challenges have so far hindered its large-scale implementation, said Insurance Development and Regulatory Authority (IDRA) Chairman Dr M Aslam Alam on Monday. “Climate change is no longer a future threat. It is already affecting our lives, food security, and health,” Dr Alam said while speaking at a workshop on Enhancing Media Capacity on Climate Risk Insurance, held at the Economic Reporters’ Forum (ERF) auditorium. The workshop was jointly organised by ERF and Oxfam. He said rising temperatures, shrinking winters, and intensifying floods and cyclones are severely impacting agriculture, livelihoods, and public health, creating complex risks for millions. He noted that climate risk insurance could be a vital tool to protect vulnerable communities if key barriers are addressed. The IDRA chairman identified insurability, affordability and moral hazard as major obstacles. He explained that repeated losses make some households uninsurable while insurance premiums remain unaffordable for the poorest segments. Exaggerated or false claims also pose a risk to event-based climate insurance. To mitigate these challenges, Dr Alam advocated for parametric or weather-index insurance which triggers payouts based on pre-defined parameters such as river water levels or cyclone wind speeds. However, he noted legal recognition, nationwide data infrastructure, and coordination among multiple agencies remain critical challenges for scaling up the scheme. Executive Director of Bangladesh Bank Hosne Ara Shikha emphasised the role of the insurance sector in strengthening climate resilience alongside green and sustainable finance. She highlighted that Bangladesh Bank has introduced green finance products and pilot insurance-linked financial products for climate-affected communities, stressing the importance of integrating insurance with credit and guarantee schemes. Shikha further noted that 20 percent of bankable funds have been directed toward green initiatives, with special focus on women entrepreneurs, and urged coordinated efforts among regulators, banks, development partners, academia, and civil society to scale up climate-resilient finance. Moderated by Md Sariful Islam, Head of Influencing, Communications, Advocacy and Media, Oxfam in Bangladesh, journalists at the workshop received technical understanding on CRI models, data sources, and policy trends. Participants were encouraged to focus not only on post-disaster payouts but also on proactive solutions, fiscal protection, and justice-based narratives. Nurul Amin, Programme Policy Officer at WFP Bangladesh, stressed the importance of fast, reliable instruments. “Climate-vulnerable families should not have to wait for aid or rely on uncertain humanitarian responses,” he said. Dr Mohammad Emran Hasan, Head of Climate Justice and Natural Resource Rights at Oxfam in Bangladesh, said, “Bangladeshis living in climate hotspots did not create the climate crisis—but they pay the highest price. We must ensure it reaches the poorest, and media can drive that transformation.” ERF President Doulot Akter Mala and General Secretary Abul Kashem also spoke at the programme.  

Syed Ehsanul Huda, chairman of Bangladesh Jatiya Dal, joined BNP on Monday, dissolving his own party. He, along with his party leaders and workers, formally joined BNP around 4:40pm at the party Chairperson’s Gulshan office by presenting a bouquet to its Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir. Welcoming Huda and his colleagues, Fakhrul said the joining reflected trust in the leadership of BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman and confidence in the political philosophy of party founder Ziaur Rahman and Chairperson Khaleda Zia. He said Huda closely worked with BNP in the long movement for democracy. “Today Ehsanul Huda and the leaders and activists of his party have officially joined BNP.” Fakhrul expressed hope that their joining would strengthen BNP. “This will make our democratic movement stronger and help us move forward. We hope their involvement will also play a positive role in the coming election.” BNP Standing Committee Member Nazrul Islam Khan said he has been working with Huda for a long time as his party was a partner of the simultaneous movement. “It will now be easier for us to work together in the same party. I hope Huda and his party colleagues will strengthen BNP and the struggle for democracy.” Huda said the country is going through a critical period. “We fought for the people and democracy together earlier. There are now attempts to foil the upcoming election. At this time, I am dissolving my party and joining BNP.” Huda also said he has joined BNP to strengthen the hands of Tarique Rahman. He said he dissolved Bangladesh Jatiya Dal and joined BNP along with all leaders and activists of his party. At the programme, Huda filled out the party’s primary membership form and officially joined BNP. According to BNP sources, Huda is going to contest the upcoming parliamentary election from Kishoreganj-5 constituency with BNP’s ticket.

The government is set to slash profit rates on national savings certificates (Sanchaypatra) from January 1, 2026, marking the second reduction in six months, following calls from the banking sector. The Finance Division of the Ministry of Finance has drafted a proposal outlining the new profit rates, which has been submitted to Finance Adviser Dr. Salehuddin Ahmed for approval, officials said. Once endorsed, they said, the Internal Resources Division (IRD) will issue an official circular to implement the changes. Finance Adviser Salehuddin Ahmed said that he has yet to officially receive the proposal, bankers have been advocating for a rate cut. "There is a demand from bankers to reduce the profit rates of savings certificates to support credit growth in the private sector," he said, adding that the final decision will consider the overall national interest. This move follows a decision made on June 30, where the government resolved to review and adjust profit rates every six months as part of its income and debt management strategy. According to sources within the Finance Division, the new proposal suggests an average reduction by 0.5 percent across various savings schemes. The tiered interest structure will remain. It means- Small investments-For investments up to Tk7.5 lakh, profit rates will remain relatively higher.Large investments- For investments exceeding Tk7.5 lakh, the profit rates will be significantly lower.Currently, the maximum profit rate stands at 11.98 percent, while the minimum is 9.72 percent.The family savings certificate, the most popular scheme among citizens, currently offers 11.93 percent for investments below Tk 7.5 lakh. This is expected to see a slight dip. Other schemes affected include: Pensioner savings certificate: currently 11.98 percent (below 7.5 lakh).Bangladesh savings certificate (5-year): currently 11.83 percent (below 7.5 lakh).Three-Monthly Profit-Based Certificate: currently 11.82 percent (below 7.5 lakh).No changes are expected for the Wage Earner Development Bond, US Dollar Premium Bond, US Dollar Investment Bond, or Post Office Savings Bank ordinary accounts. Abdul Hai Sarker, Chairman of the Bangladesh Association of Banks (BAB), welcomed the cut-down move. He said high interest rates on government savings certificates often lure deposits away from private banks. "If these rates decrease, funds will move toward banks, which will help facilitate private sector loans." Government data shows a shift in borrowing trends. In the first four months of the current 2025–26 fiscal year (July–October), the government borrowed Tk2,369 crore through savings certificates. As of the end of October, the government's total outstanding debt in savings certificates stood at Tk3.41 lakh crore.

Bangladesh and Asian Development Bank (ADB) on Monday signed loan agreements totaling $688 million to upgrade the 35-kilometer railway line from Chattogram to Dohazari. A 2.5-kilometer bypass enabling direct train services from Dhaka to Cox’s Bazar without stopping at Chattogram station will be constructed under South Asia Subregional Economic Cooperation-Chattogram-Dohazari Railway Project. The project aims to establish seamless connectivity along the Dhaka–Chattogram–Cox’s Bazar corridor that will boost regional transport efficiency and economic growth. Secretary of the Economic Relations Division (ERD) Md. Shahriar Kader Siddiky and ADB Country Director for Bangladesh Hoe Yun Jeong signed the agreements at a ceremony held at the ERD office in Dhaka. ADB Country Director for Bangladesh Hoe Yun Jeong said that the project will enhance the resilience, reliability, and efficiency of rail services between Dhaka and Cox’s Bazar, facilitating a crucial shift from road to rail transport. “It will invigorate economic activities along the Dhaka–Chattogram–Cox’s Bazar corridor, particularly boosting the tourism and fisheries industries,” he said. As a priority investment, the ADB country director said that the project aims to unlock underserved areas of the Cox’s Bazar region by stimulating investment and trade. “Furthermore, it is expected to strengthen the Bangladesh Railway network, reinforcing the country’s capacity to function as a transport and transshipment hub in South Asia.” As a component of the Trans-Asia Railway network, the Dhaka–Chattogram–Cox’s Bazar corridor currently accommodates 32% of passenger traffic and 55% of freight, underscoring the importance of enhanced rail infrastructure for economic integration, optimising logistics, and driving development in the country’s southeastern region and beyond. Key project activities include track elevation, improved drainage, modernised signaling, dual-gauging, and the procurement of 30 energy-efficient locomotives to reduce fuel consumption and emissions. It will also strengthen the Bangladesh Railway’s operational capacity through staff training and upgrade three stations to provide inclusive, user-friendly facilities, as well as spaces for private sector commercial activities.
