Two journalists’ organisations have strongly condemned separate attacks on reporters in Dhaka and demanded swift action against those responsible. In a statement on Monday, the Bangladesh Secretariat Reporters Forum (BSRF) condemned the attack on senior journalist Prasun Ashish and urged the authorities to identify those involved and ensure exemplary punishment. BSRF President Masudul Haque and General Secretary Ubaidullah Badal said an attack on a journalist while returning to the office after performing professional duties is not only condemnable but also a direct assault on press freedom and journalists’ safety. They said repeated incidents of assault and harassment against journalists while carrying out their professional responsibilities are deeply concerning. According to Prasun Ashish, the incident took place on Sunday afternoon when he was returning after collecting news from the Secretariat. The vehicle of Somoy Sangbad was stopped at a traffic signal in front of the Electricity Building. When the signal turned green and the vehicle started moving, a traffic sergeant suddenly halted the movement again. The situation escalated after the driver sounded the horn, he said. At that time, a passerby began recording the incident on a mobile phone. While trying to stop the recording, a man identified as Sajib Hasan, central organiser of Jatiya Jubo Shakti of the National Citizen Party (NCP), allegedly created a mob and attacked Prasun Ashish and Somoy Sangbad’s senior video journalist Aminur Rahman. Meanwhile, the Dhaka Reporters Unity (DRU) also expressed deep concern and condemned attacks on two journalists- Kamrul Hasan, senior reporter of the Daily Samakal, and Prasun Ashish, special correspondent of Somoy TV. In a statement, DRU President Abu Saleh Akon and General Secretary Mainul Hasan Sohel urged law enforcement agencies to conduct a proper investigation and bring the attackers to justice. According to Kamrul Hasan, he was attacked by several unidentified individuals around 3:30 pm on Monday while travelling by motorcycle from the DRU office to the Samakal office in Tejgaon. The incident occurred near the south gate of the Office of the Comptroller and Auditor General in Segunbagicha under Ramna Police Station. The attackers allegedly punched him repeatedly and snatched Tk 35,000 from his pocket before fleeing. A bus named “Soban Allah” was seen standing at the spot and the attackers are suspected to be linked to its staff. The DRU leaders also called on the authorities to ensure the safety and security of journalists performing their professional duties.

Bangladesh has said continued loss of lives of innocent Bangladeshi civilians in the Middle East is a matter of grave concern. "The government of Bangladesh is deeply saddened by the death of two Bangladeshis and the injury of other Bangladeshis following an aerial attack in Al-Kharj Governorate in Saudi Arabia yesterday (Sunday)," said the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Monday. The government accords high priority to the safety and welfare of Bangladeshi nationals in the Middle East and is closely monitoring the evolving situation. The two Bangladeshis killed in the above incident are Bacchu Miah of Katiadi, Kishorganj and Mosharraf Hossain of Shakhipur, Tangail. The injured are receiving treatment at local hospitals. The officials of Bangladesh Embassy in Riyadh have visited the injured at the hospitals. They are in close contact with the Saudi authorities regarding bringing back their mortal remains. "Bangladesh strongly condemns all such attacks that result in the loss of innocent lives and calls upon all parties concerned to exercise maximum restraint," said the Ministry. Bangladesh urged the international community to take urgent and effective measures to de-escalate the situation and prevent further loss of life.

The government has decided to strengthen cultural diplomacy as an important tool of soft power to enhance people-to-people contacts, promote the Bangladesh brand, and improve the country’s image abroad through cultural exchange programmes and holding cultural festivals overseas. A meeting was held on Monday at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to discuss ways to promote Bangladesh’s cultural diplomacy worldwide. The meeting was attended by Cultural Affairs Minister Nitai Roy Chowdhury, State Minister for Foreign Affairs Shama Obaed Islam and State Minister for Cultural Affairs Ali Newaz Mahmud Khaiyam. The Foreign Secretary, the Secretary of the Ministry of Cultural Affairs, and other senior officials from both ministries also participated. This was the first meeting of its kind organised by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs under the proactive initiative of the State Minister for Foreign Affairs, said the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The meeting discussed organizing various cultural festivals and events, such as music and dance performances, art exhibitions, book fairs, folk music programmes, culinary showcases, and visits to historical and archaeological sites, as practical initiatives to advance cultural diplomacy and contribute to revitalizing the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC) process. The meeting also reviewed existing and pending Agreements, Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs), and Cultural Exchange Programmes (CEPs) between Bangladesh and more than one hundred countries. Decisions were taken to operationalise the existing instruments and expedite the finalization of those that remain pending. Current govt committed to Hasina's extradition: Shama Obaed Both the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of Cultural Affairs expressed their commitment to working in close coordination to further promote Bangladesh’s cultural diplomacy across the globe.

A mobile court sentenced six people to jail after busting an adulterated milk factory in Keshabpur upazila of Jashore on Monday. The drive was conducted at Pathorghata village under Panjia union by a joint team of Rab-6 (CPC-3) and the Directorate of National Consumer Rights Protection based on a tip-off. Officials said the group was producing adulterated milk by mixing jelly, soybean oil and soda with cow’s milk. The mobile court, led by Keshabpur Upazila Nirbahi Officer and Executive Magistrate Reksona Khatun, sentenced five people- Arup Ghosh, Ramprasad Ghosh, Buddhadeb Ghosh, Milon Ghosh and Swapan Ghosh to one year in jail each and fined them Tk 1 lakh each. Another accused, Partha Ghosh, was sentenced to three months in jail and fined Tk 1 lakh. During the drive, a large quantity of jelly, oil, soda and equipment used for producing adulterated milk was seized and later destroyed. Officials said such drives will continue to protect public health.

Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has congratulated the government and people of Nepal on the successful and peaceful parliamentary elections held on March 5. In a post on his official Facebook page on Monday, the prime minister said the elections reflect the aspirations and resilience of the Nepali people and the strength of their democratic institutions. “Congratulations to the Government and the people of Nepal on the successful and peaceful parliamentary elections held on 5 March 2026,” he wrote. He described the polls as an important democratic exercise that demonstrated the people’s commitment to democracy. Tarique Rahman also said Bangladesh looks forward to working closely with the new government and the people of Nepal to further strengthen the longstanding friendship and cooperation between the two countries.

The government is working to develop the livestock sector and strengthen the capacity of marginal farmers and entrepreneurs, State Minister for Fisheries and Livestock Sultan Salauddin Tuku said on Monday. Tuku made the remarks while speaking as the chief guest at the inaugural programme of a training workshop aimed at motivating entrepreneurs in commercial buffalo farming, held at the conference room of Bangladesh Livestock Research Institute (BLRI) in the afternoon. The state minister said the government has taken various initiatives to ensure the production and supply of safe and quality animal feed, provide training to farmers at the upazila level and ensure the availability of necessary medicines and quality veterinary services. He said the government aims to increase growth in the poultry and dairy sectors to make protein-rich food more accessible to rural people and gradually turn the sector into a full-fledged industry. Highlighting the role of women in the sector, Tuku said the government is encouraging women entrepreneurs and strengthening vaccination programmes to enhance the capacity of marginal farmers. He said alongside the poultry and dairy sectors, the government is placing emphasis on expanding buffalo farming to meet the country’s growing protein demand. “Buffalo meat is highly nutritious and buffaloes can also play an important role in milk production,” Tuku said, adding that training and various forms of support are being provided to encourage entrepreneurs to invest in buffalo farming. Cabinet Division asks DCs to run mobile courts against fuel hoarding The state minister noted that buffaloes are often capable of producing more milk than cattle in many cases, stressing the need to increase both the number of buffaloes and farmers involved in the sector. “Expanding buffalo farming could open new opportunities for increasing milk and meat production in Bangladesh; buffaloes are a major source of milk production in many neighbouring countries, Bangladesh is still lagging behind in this sector.” To address this, the government is planning initiatives including the collection of improved buffalo breeds, distribution of calves among farmers and expanded training programmes to promote buffalo farming, he said. Tuku informed that the government has already started distributing farmers’ cards among farmers and livestock rearers to facilitate support and services for them. Creating a database of trained farmers would make it easier to provide government assistance in the future and help them expand their farms, contributing significantly to the national economy, Tuku added. He also stressed the need to strengthen research activities and ensure adequate budget allocations to further enhance productivity in the livestock sector. BLRI Director General Dr Shakila Faruque presided over the programme. Senior officials of the Fisheries and Livestock Ministry, institute officials and farmers were also present. Earlier, the state minister visited different research activities of the institute.

European Union (EU) leaders said on Monday that the bloc was ready to play a role in easing tensions in the Middle East, calling for de-escalation and a return to negotiations. The EU stands ready to "contribute in every possible way to help de-escalate the situation and facilitate the return to the negotiating table," European Council President Antonio Costa and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said in a statement following a video conference with leaders from the region. They added that dialogue and diplomacy remain "the only viable way forward." Von der Leyen and Costa also reaffirmed the EU's commitment to regional stability in the Middle East, calling for the protection of civilians and full respect for international law, international humanitarian law and the principles of the United Nations Charter, according to the statement.  

Amid ongoing concerns over governance and allegations against independent directors, Bangladesh Bank has appointed observers to four private commercial banks. The banks are National Bank, Premier Bank, IFIC Bank, and Al-Arafah Islami Bank. The central bank issued formal letters last week appointing four officials of director rank to monitor the operations of these banks. The move follows the dissolution of the banks' previous boards shortly after the fall of the Awami League government, which was triggered by widespread reports of corruption and financial anomalies. Although independent and shareholder directors were subsequently appointed by the central bank to manage these banks, officials noted that the situation has not seen significant improvement. Sources within Bangladesh Bank indicated that the observers were specifically deployed following allegations against some of the current independent directors. The newly appointed observers will attend all meetings of the Board of Directors, Executive Committees, and Audit Committees to provide rigorous oversight. According to central bank sources, the appointees are Munir Ahmed Chowdhury, Director of Bank Supervision Department-12 appointed at National Bank. Mohammad Anisur Rahman, Director of Islamic Banking Regulation and Policy Department of the central bank to Al-Arafah Islami Bank. ANM Moinul Kabir, Director of the Payment Systems Department to Premier Bank: and AKM Kamruzzaman, Director of Forex Reserve and Treasury Management Department-1 to IFIC Bank. The four banks were previously under the control of influential groups and individuals closely linked to the former administration. National Bank was operated by the Sikdar Group, while Premier Bank was led by HBM Iqbal’s Premier Group. IFIC Bank was under the chairmanship of Salman F. Rahman, former advisor to the ousted Prime Minister, and Al-Arafah Islami Bank was overseen by Abdus Samad, Vice Chairman of the S. Alam Group. The dual presence of both independent directors and central bank observers has raised questions within the banking sector regarding the specific message the regulator intends to send regarding the stability and integrity of these institutions.

Inspector General of Police (IGP) Md Ali Hossain Fakir has said that a proposal has been submitted to the government to post judicial magistrates at every police station to ensure quick justice and resolve minor disputes. “If judicial magistrates are stationed at police stations, disputes related to land or unpaid money could be resolved within seven days,” he said while briefing journalists at the Police Headquarters media centre on Monday. This would reduce people’s need to visit courts frequently and help settle small conflicts more quickly, he added. Replying to a question, he said that one of the major challenges currently facing the police is the declining tendency among people to follow the law. “Whenever an incident occurs, people want quick justice. But investigation and judicial processes require a certain amount of time,” he said. According to him, having judicial magistrates at police stations would allow immediate resolution of certain issues, save police time and help reduce negative perceptions about the police among the public. Referring to recent mob violence, the IGP said police have plans to eliminate mob-related activities. Unemployment has made it easier for some people to join mobs when called upon by various groups, and some also become involved with juvenile gangs, he said. “No respectable person is involved in such mobs. Some people take advantage of mob situations to engage in looting,” he said. He mentioned that action is being taken against those who organise mobs and that they will be brought under the law regardless of their influence. Regarding extortion, the IGP said a list of extortionists has been prepared and operations against them will begin soon. Measures will be taken against individuals whose names appear commonly in lists received from different intelligence agencies. On the issue of political involvement in policing, he said police are an important part of the government but their main responsibility is to maintain law and order and serve the public. “Regardless of political affiliation, the police are friends of the people,” he said. He also instructed that anyone visiting a police station should be treated with respect, even if their complaint does not fall under the law. “They should at least be offered a cup of tea before leaving so that there is no complaint against the police,” he added. Calling for time to conduct proper investigations, the IGP said solving some murder cases can take 20 to 25 years. Excessive pressure can send the wrong message and increase the risk of false confessions or incorrect charge sheets. He said the “Joj Mia drama” had also occurred partly due to pressure from the media. He further said action will be taken if political individuals involved with juvenile gangs are found committing crimes. Additional IGPs AKM Aowlad Hossain (Administration), Md Akram Hossain (Finance), Mosleh Uddin Ahmed (Logistics and Asset Acquisition) and Sardar Nurul Amin (Development) were also present.

State Minister for Foreign Affairs Shama Obaed Islam on Monday said Bangladesh’s request to extradite former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina from India remains an ongoing process, reaffirming the current government’s commitment to bringing her back to face justice. “The current government is making efforts to bring Sheikh Hasina back, and those efforts will continue,” she told reporters at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs when asked whether Dhaka would renew its call for Hasina’s extradition from India. The State Minister said the government, which recently assumed office, is determined to ensure justice for those responsible for events over the past 17 years, including the killing of civilians and children during the July Uprising in Bangladesh 2024. Addressing bilateral issues with India, Shama Obaed said Bangladesh has many issues with its neighbour. “We are asking for diesel, water, and we want the killings along the border to stop,” she said, adding that the Indian government has expressed interest in maintaining constructive relations with Bangladesh’s new elected administration based on mutual respect. Indian High Commissioner to Bangladesh Pranay Verma paid a courtesy call on Finance and Planning Minister Amir Khosru Mahmud Chowdhury on Sunday. The two sides held wide-ranging discussions on issues of mutual interest aimed at strengthening bilateral financial and economic cooperation. Talks focused on collaboration in the financial sector, emerging areas such as the digital economy and artificial intelligence, and improving the ease of doing business to attract greater investment and deepen economic ties between the two countries. Bangladesh had earlier written to India in November last year for the second time seeking Hasina’s extradition following a verdict by the International Crimes Tribunal-1. On November 17, the tribunal sentenced Sheikh Hasina and former Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal to death in a case over crimes against humanity committed during the July–August mass uprising last year. Former Inspector General of Police Chowdhury Abdullah Al-Mamun, who testified as a state witness, was sentenced to five years in prison.

Dhaka dwellers continue to suffer in many parts of the capital as hawkers occupy large sections of sidewalks and roads, creating severe congestion. In Gulistan, one of the city’s busiest commercial hubs, vendors have set up makeshift stalls covering much of the footpath and even parts of the roadway, forcing people to walk on the streets and slowing traffic.

The Cabinet Division has instructed deputy commissioners (DCs) across the country to operate mobile courts to prevent illegal hoarding and overpricing of fuel oil. The directive was issued in a letter sent to all DCs on Monday. According to the letter, the move follows a request from the Energy and Mineral Resources Division, which urged the Cabinet Division to instruct local administrations to take immediate action to maintain stability in the fuel market. The letter said mobile courts should be conducted to prevent illegal hoarding of fuel oil, sales at prices higher than the government-fixed rates, unauthorised open market sales and smuggling. The initiative aims to maintain discipline in the fuel market and prevent any artificial crisis, it added.

The government has formed a central committee to review and process the withdrawal of cases filed for political harassment at different times. A notification issued by the Cabinet Division on Sunday said the six-member committee will examine such cases and recommend steps for their withdrawal where appropriate. The committee will be headed by the Minister for Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs as its convener. Other members include the Secretary of the Ministry of Home Affairs, an Additional Secretary or Joint Secretary of the Public Security Division of the Home Ministry, the officer-in-charge of the Law-1 branch of the ministry, and a representative from the Law and Justice Division of the Ministry of Law not below the rank of Joint Secretary. The in-charge of the Law-1 branch of the Ministry of Home Affairs will serve as the member-secretary of the committee. According to the terms of reference, the committee will review recommendations sent by district-level committees and identify cases that can be withdrawn. It will then prepare a list of such cases and take necessary steps for their withdrawal. The Ministry of Home Affairs will provide secretarial support to the committee. The notification said the committee will meet as required and may include additional members if necessary.

Dr FM Siddiqui has been appointed Vice-Chancellor of Bangladesh Medical University. The appointment was made through a notification issued on Monday by the Health Education and Family Welfare Division by order of the President. Prof Siddiqui is a medicine and chest diseases specialist and a former professor of the Medicine Department at Dhaka Medical College Hospital. According to the notification, FM Siddiqui’s tenure as Vice-Chancellor will be four years.  However, the President, who is also the Chancellor of the university, may cancel the appointment at any time if necessary.

Ameer-e-Jamaat Dr Shafiqur Rahman on Monday urged the government to take immediate steps to ensure adequate fuel supply by urgently contacting international partners and friendly countries. In a Facebook post from his verified account, he said the suffering of people in different parts of the country, including the capital, in buying fuel is “very painful”. He mentioned that people have been waiting in queues stretching for kilometres and standing for hours to buy fuel, while many are fasting during Ramadan and some vehicles have already run out of fuel. Dr Shafiqur said the crisis is not only disrupting the travel of ordinary people but also affecting electricity generation and industrial activities. With the Eid journey approaching, he warned that the situation could make travel even more difficult for people if it is not resolved quickly. He said Jamaat had earlier urged the government to take initiatives to import fuel from alternative sources, but the situation is worsening day by day. “We once again request the government to take immediate initiatives and ensure fuel supply on an urgent basis by contacting international partners and friendly countries,” he said. He also urged people to remain patient during the crisis and avoid unnecessary use of fuel. “May Allah grant us the strength to overcome this crisis,” he added.  

Members of joint forces detained 12 people and recovered arms, explosives during a special drive in the Jungle Salimpur area of Sitakunda upazila in Chattogram district early Monday. During the operation, members of the joint forces conducted combing operation across various hills, suspected hideouts, risky settlements and other locations believed to be used by criminals. They also seized one pistol, one locally made LG gun, four rounds of cartridges, 11 cocktail bombs, 17 sharp weapons, 19 CCTV cameras, two DVR devices, one power box and two binoculars, said Ahsan Habib Palash, Deputy Inspector General of Chattogram Range, Ahsan Habib Palash. Officials said the equipment was apparently used by criminals to monitor the area and track the movement of law enforcement agencies. No casualties were reported during the operation and the overall situation remained under control. The operation was launched around 5:30am following allegations that the area had long been used as a hideout for criminals involved in terrorist activities, illegal arms storage, hill cutting and unlawful land trading. A total of 3,183 members of different law enforcement agencies took part in the drive, including 487 members of the Bangladesh Army, 146 from district police, 800 from Chattogram Metropolitan Police (CMP), 400 from the RRF Chattogram unit, 100 from Feni district police, 300 from hill district police units, 330 from the Armed Police Battalion (APBn), 122 from Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) and 371 from Rapid Action Battalion (RAB). Seven executive magistrates were also deployed during the operation. To ensure effective and safe execution of the drive in the rugged hilly terrain, the forces used three helicopters, 15 armoured personnel carriers (APCs), three dog squads from RAB and CMP, and 12 drones. The operation was led by DIG of Chattogram Range Md Ahsan Habib Palash, while Additional DIG Md Nazimul Haque and Chattogram Superintendent of Police Mohammad Nazir Ahmed Khan supervised the drive on the ground. Two temporary police camps have been set up in the Chinnamul and Alinagar areas of Jungle Salimpur to maintain law and order, prevent criminals from regrouping and ensure the safety of local residents. Police said such drives will continue in the future to ensure public safety and curb criminal activities.

National Citizen Party (NCP) Convener and Opposition Chief Whip Md Nahid Islam on Monday said the current government’s legitimacy originates from the July mass uprising, warning that it would be questioned if the July Charter is not implemented. “This government did not come to power out of thin air. It was not formed through a conventional constitutional process. Its legitimacy comes from the July mass uprising,” he said while addressing an iftar and prayer event organised by the NCP’s Khulna divisional unit at Khulna District Stadium. Nahid also said the legitimacy of the interim government had similarly stemmed from the popular uprising. He warned that if the government avoids implementing the July Charter citing the old constitution, its legitimacy would become questionable. Referring to the presence of leaders and activists from various political parties on the same stage, including BNP, Jamaat-e-Islami and NCP, Nahid said the July uprising made such unity possible. “Because of the July mass uprising we are able to stand on the same stage today. We are here on the blood of hundreds of martyrs,” he said. Among the invited guests at the iftar mahfil were Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami Secretary General Mia Golam Parwar, Khulna City Corporation Administrator Nazrul Islam Manju, Khulna-2 MP Advocate Sheikh Zahangir Hossain Helal, Khelafat Majlis Nayeb-e-Ameer Maulana Sakhawat Hossain, and leaders of the 11-party alliance in Khulna division, including Jamaat’s Hindu wing leader Krishna Nandi. Special guests included NCP Chief Organiser for the southern region Hasnat Abdullah, Chief Coordinator Nasiruddin Patwary, National Youth Shakti Convener Advocate Tarikul Islam, and National Student Shakti President Zahid Ahsan, along with central and divisional leaders. The programme was chaired by NCP Joint Member Secretary and Khulna divisional organising secretary Faridul Haque. Speaking at the event, Nasiruddin Patwary said people in Khulna had eagerly waited to vote for the party’s symbol “Shapla Koli,” but the party could not field candidates there. He said the party would try to nominate candidates in every constituency in future local government elections. Criticising the Rampal coal-fired power plant, he urged the government to shut it down, alleging that the project had been set up during the tenure of former prime minister Sheikh Hasina in cooperation with India.

  At least three people were killed and around a dozen others injured in a collision between a bus and a motorcycle in Fatikchhari upazila of Chattogram on Monday evening. The accident occurred around 6pm on the Chattogram–Khagrachhari highway in the Pelagazi Dighi area, police said. The deceased were identified as Topu Urang, 22; Nayan, 23; and Uttam Urang, 15. All three were residents of the Hazarikhil area of Harualchhari union in the upazila. The identities of the injured could not be confirmed immediately. Md Selim, officer-in-charge (OC) of Fatikchhari Police Station, said police have so far confirmed three deaths, while around 10 to 12 people were injured in the accident. The injured were taken to nearby hospitals for treatment, he said. The bus involved in the accident was coming from Manikchhari, the OC added.  

Prime Minister’s Adviser on the Ministry of Finance and Planning Dr Rashed Al Mahmud Titumir on Monday described the government’s newly announced “Family Card” programme as a landmark initiative aimed at reforming Bangladesh’s social safety net system, reducing wastage and ensuring benefits reach intended recipients. “If you consider the circumstances and the legacy of economic pressures we received, this programme is a groundbreaking step,” he said. Speaking at a press conference at the Multipurpose Hall of the Ministry of Finance on the eve of the programme’s launch, Titumir said the initiative should be viewed in the context of the economic challenges the government inherited. Titumir said Bangladesh has already made progress toward achieving several Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) that had remained unmet in the past. He expressed hope that the new programme would further strengthen the government’s efforts to ensure inclusive development and social protection. Referring to the current geopolitical and economic uncertainties, he said the government is closely monitoring global developments, including the evolving situation in the broader Middle East, which could have implications for Bangladesh’s economy. At the same time, he acknowledged reports indicating a rise in poverty and weaknesses in existing social protection programmes. “Various studies and media reports have pointed out that many of our social safety net programmes suffer from significant inclusion and exclusion errors—people who should receive support are often left out, while those who should not receive it sometimes remain on the list,” he said. According to the adviser, the Family Card programme has been designed to address these longstanding structural problems. “This is the first programme in Bangladesh intended to rise above those structural issues,” he added. He said the programme would eventually provide universal coverage and would be implemented in phases to reach all four crore families across the country. Titumir also clarified concerns about financing the initiative, saying a substantial portion of the funding would come from improving efficiency within existing social safety net programmes. “If you look at current programmes, statistics consistently show that wastage is very high,” he said. “By shifting to a digital system, we will be able to significantly reduce that wastage and ensure benefits reach the right people more quickly.” The adviser also said the government has a clear plan to gradually increase the tax-to-GDP ratio to strengthen fiscal capacity and sustainably support social protection programmes. “Reducing waste and adopting digital systems is the most effective way to reform social safety nets,” Titumir said, adding that the government is committed to ensuring transparency, efficiency and fairness in distributing public support.

Finance Minister Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury on Monday said the government is taking into account the possible economic impacts of ongoing geopolitical tensions in the Middle East while preparing its policy plans and economic projections. “We are conducting our overall economic activities while anticipating the possible challenges that may arise from the current global situation,” he said. Responding to a question at a briefing marking the launch of the government’s “Family Card” programme at the Multipurpose Hall of the Ministry of Finance, the minister said the government is closely monitoring global developments and adjusting its strategies accordingly. Khosru noted that conflicts and other global disruptions pose potential risks to economies worldwide, and Bangladesh is not outside their influence. He said the government has already factored such uncertainties into its economic forecasts and policy directions. “This is something we cannot avoid. Therefore, we are incorporating these realities into our projections and planning,” he said. The finance minister said the government’s future economic outlook and projections will reflect the uncertainties created by global conflicts and geopolitical developments. “We are working continuously, and our projections for the coming days will take into account the global problems emerging from war and other international factors,” he added. Khosru said relevant ministries and agencies are coordinating efforts to address potential economic pressures and maintain stability in key sectors. He also stressed the importance of ensuring energy security amid the uncertain global environment. “Energy security is extremely important for us. We are seeking cooperation from various partners and are in discussions with suppliers and governments,” he said. The minister said the government remains committed to managing the country’s economic activities prudently while preparing for possible external shocks arising from global crises. He expressed confidence that with careful planning and coordination among relevant agencies, Bangladesh will be able to navigate potential challenges stemming from global geopolitical tensions.

Benapole Customs House has recorded a revenue shortfall of around Tk 1,650 crore in the first eight months of the current 2025–26 fiscal year compared to the target. According to data from Benapole Land Port, a total of 12,35,521.84 metric tonnes of goods were imported and exported through 68,086 trucks during the period. Of the total, imports accounted for 11,10,903.81 metric tonnes while exports stood at 1,24,618.61 metric tonnes. In the previous 2024–25 fiscal year, a total of 24,32,980.69 metric tonnes of goods were traded through 1,43,336 trucks, including 20,11,267.59 metric tonnes of imports and 4,21,713 metric tonnes of exports. Customs and port sources said bilateral trade between Bangladesh and India slowed down due to strained political and diplomatic relations between the two countries after August 5, alongside the impact of the ongoing conflict in the Middle East. The unstable trade environment has affected both imports and exports through the port. Earlier, around 500 to 550 goods-laden trucks used to enter the port daily, but the number has now declined to around 250 to 300 trucks. Similarly, daily exports have dropped from about 300 trucks to nearly 150 trucks, officials said. Business leaders said the slowdown in import trade, tensions in Bangladesh-India relations and internal irregularities at the port have deepened the revenue crisis at Benapole Customs. Jewel Rana, an importer said traders want to conduct business following proper rules but hoped trade would expand if relations between the governments of Bangladesh and India improve. Aminul Haque Anu, vice-president of the Benapole Importers and Exporters Association, said the sharp decline in import and export volumes has naturally reduced revenue collection. Revenue Officer of Benapole Customs House Monibur Rahman said revenue collection has fallen due to reduced imports but the situation is not beyond control. “We are working to simplify customs assessment procedures, ensure quick release of goods and strengthen revenue management. We hope import and export will increase and the revenue target can be achieved by June,” he said.

Finance Minister Amir Khosru Mahmud Chowdhury on Monday said the government’s ‘Family Card’ programme will be implemented in a transparent and non-partisan manner so that eligible citizens across the country can receive its benefits. “This is a major programme. In Bangladesh’s history, such a large step for poverty alleviation has not been taken before,” he said. Speaking at a press conference at the Multipurpose Hall of the Finance Ministry on the eve of the programme’s launch, Khosru said the programme is designed to provide economic support to families through female household heads as part of the government’s broader commitment to women’s empowerment and social welfare. He said the initiative aims to strengthen the country’s social protection system and ensure that financial assistance reaches people at the grassroots level. “We want to build a welfare-oriented state where economic benefits reach every citizen,” he said. Responding to a question on whether residents of constituencies represented by opposition parties would receive the card, the minister rejected the possibility of political discrimination. “This programme is completely non-partisan. It has been designed neutrally and will be implemented with full transparency,” he said. He urged journalists and citizens to report any irregularities, assuring that the project would be implemented with honesty and accountability. Khosru also said the government would review how to support extremely poor households without female members after completion of the pilot phase. The finance minister said the programme reflects Prime Minister Tarique Rahman’s vision to expand social protection and empower the country’s poorest households, particularly women who manage families despite limited resources. He said the first phase will prioritise extremely poor families, followed by low-income households, with coverage gradually expanding to include all eligible women-headed families across the country. The programme will initially be implemented as a pilot project, through which the government has developed a transparent beneficiary selection process, he said. “The lists of beneficiaries have been prepared through an independent and transparent process. There has been no politicisation in selecting the recipients,” he added. Khosru also said strict safeguards have been built into the system to prevent misuse and corruption in the delivery of benefits. He expressed hope that the programme would help improve the living standards of low-income households and provide greater financial stability to disadvantaged families. Further details on the structure and implementation of the project will be shared by the Social Welfare Minister, he added.

A young man was killed after his leg veins were cut in the capital’s Jatrabari area, reportedly following a dispute over drug trading. The deceased was identified as Mehedi Hasan Apu, 25, son of the late Badsha Mia of Chagalkanda village under Rajapur Police Station in Jhalakathi district. He used to live in the Kacha Bazar area under Jatrabari Police Station. The incident occurred around 11pm on Sunday (March 8) at a shop in Jatrabari Kacha Bazar. Police recovered the body on Monday morning and sent it to Dhaka Medical College morgue for autopsy. Mohammad Raju, Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Jatrabari Police Station, the murder may be linked to drug dealing. However, police are working to determine the exact cause,” he said. The OC said one of the victim’s leg veins had been cut and there were several other injury marks on the body. The victim’s relatives have been informed. Police said drives are underway to identify and arrest those involved in the incident.

A student of the Department of Philosophy at Dhaka University (DU) was allegedly beaten several times and later handed over to Shahbagh Police Station on accusations of having links with the banned organisation Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL). The victim, Rahid Khan Pavel, a student from the 2020–21 academic session, is currently receiving treatment at Dhaka Medical College Hospital under police supervision. The incident reportedly took place during the pre-dawn meal (sehri) early Monday morning. Those accused in the incident include Hasibul Islam, an organisational secretary of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement and a student of the Sociology Department at DU; Sardar Nadim Mahmud Shuvo, a Philosophy Department student from the same session; and Mohammad Saifullah, organisational secretary of Jatiya Chhatra Shakti. All the victim and the accused are students from the same academic batch. Nadim previously served as a coordinator of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement and later joined the Democratic Student Council. According to eyewitness students, Pavel went to the BUET canteen to have sehri when several student activists, including Hasibul Islam, called him over and engaged him in an argument over issues such as the alleged rehabilitation of Chhatra League, an iftar party reportedly organised on campus with BCL backing, and the recent playing of the March 7 speech on campus. The argument reportedly escalated into a scuffle. Later, Pavel was taken from the Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET) campus to the Dhaka University campus, where he was allegedly beaten multiple times before being handed over to Shahbagh Police Station. Police later admitted him to the hospital. Highlighting the incident, Philosophy student Aditi Islam wrote on Facebook demanding justice for the attack on Rahid Khan Pavel, saying, “I demand justice for the assault on Philosophy Department student Rahid Khan Pavel after labelling him as Chhatra League. Those responsible for this terrorist act must be punished.” She further alleged that three identified individuals involved in the attack are Sardar Nadim Mahmud Shuvo, Hasib Al Islam and Saifullah. According to her, they are affiliated with Chhatra Shakti and are attempting to legitimise the attack by presenting themselves as “some general students.” “Raise your voice against this rising campus violence and resist such terrorist activities carried out in the name of politics,” she wrote. Following the incident, Saifullah posted on Facebook, “We have caught a Chhatra League member on campus and are taking him to Shahbagh Police Station. There will be no compromise on the Chhatra League issue.” Attempts to contact Saifullah for comment were unsuccessful. But he said to another journalist that when they went to the BUET canteen for sehri, Hasib called Pavel after noticing him. They then became involved in an argument over the issue of rehabilitating Chhatra League. According to him, Pavel made a phone call during the argument, which was followed by a physical altercation with Hasib and Shuvo. He claimed he was still inside the BUET canteen at that time and later saw that Pavel had been beaten when he reached Shahbagh Police Station. “Pavel is actually a very good friend of mine,” Saifullah added. Attempts to contact Hasib Al Islam for comment were unsuccessful. Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Shahbagh Police Station Moniruzzaman said Pavel is currently undergoing treatment and that further decisions regarding the matter will be taken later.

Leaders of various business associations on Monday urged the government to pass the Smoking and Tobacco Products Usage (Control) (Amendment) Ordinance 2025 as a law in the first session of the 13th National Parliament, warning that delaying the move could weaken tobacco control efforts and harm public health. They said if the ordinance remains only on paper and is not enacted by Parliament, it will become ineffective, leading to an increase in tobacco-related deaths, higher healthcare costs and setbacks in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The call came at a discussion titled “The Importance of Strengthening Tobacco Control Law for Preventing Non-Communicable Diseases and Protecting Public Health,” organised by Dhaka Ahsania Mission at the Zahur Hossain Chowdhury Hall of the National Press Club. Speakers at the meeting said about 21.3 million people aged 15 years and above in Bangladesh currently use tobacco, while nearly 200,000 people die every year from tobacco-related diseases—an average of around 545 deaths per day. They warned that the death toll could rise further if the ordinance is not passed during the first session of the new Parliament. Business leaders also pointed out that although the government earns around Tk 40,000 crore annually from tobacco-related revenue, the total economic loss caused by healthcare expenses, productivity loss and premature deaths exceeds Tk 87,000 crore. They said the interim government approved the Tobacco Control Ordinance in December last year to address the issue, and stressed that it must now be passed as a law in Parliament to ensure its effective implementation. Presenting the keynote, Shariful Islam, coordinator of the Tobacco Control Project at Dhaka Ahsania Mission, highlighted several key provisions of the ordinance. These include banning smoking in all public places and public transport and removing designated smoking areas to protect non-smokers from second-hand smoke. The ordinance also proposes banning the display of tobacco products at points of sale, prohibiting all forms of tobacco advertising and promotion, increasing pictorial health warnings on cigarette packets to 75 percent, and banning the sale of tobacco products within 100 metres of educational institutions, hospitals and sports facilities. The meeting was chaired by Dr S M Khalilur Rahman, vice-president of Dhaka Ahsania Mission, while Mokhlesur Rahman, deputy director of its health sector, delivered the welcome speech. Among others present were Badiuzzaman Badal, president of Bangladesh Inland Water Transport (Passenger) Association; Zakir Hossain, general secretary of Bangladesh Super Market Owners Association; Nazmul Hasan Mahmud, president of Bangladesh Shop Owners Association; Arifur Rahman Tipu of Dhaka Metropolitan Shop Owners Association; Mokaddem Hossain, general secretary of Bangladesh Combined Workers Federation; Alamgir Hossain Khan, general secretary of Bangladesh Grocery Business Association; and Rafiqul Islam Babul, president of the National Employees Federation, along with leaders from various professional organisations.

The four-day annual Deputy Commissioners’ (DC) Conference will begin on May 3. Prime Minister Tarique Rahman is scheduled to inaugurate the conference at 10:30am at Osmani Memorial Auditorium in the capital. The Cabinet Division’s Field Administration Coordination Wing on Monday sent letters to all secretaries and private secretaries to ministers and state ministers seeking necessary preparations for the conference. According to the letter, the four-day DC Conference will be held from May 3 to May 6 at the Osmani Memorial Auditorium. During the conference, ministers, state ministers, senior secretaries and secretaries of different ministries and divisions will attend various sessions and provide guidance and advice to deputy commissioners and divisional commissioners.      

A court in Bogura on Monday sent the former officer-in-charge (OC) of Shahjahanpur Police Station to jail in an extortion case filed by a BNP leader. Judge Abuhena Siddiqui of Bogura Senior Judicial Magistrate Court-3 passed the order after a hearing in the afternoon. Former OC Alamgir Hossain appeared before the court in connection with a case filed in 2016 on charges of extorting Tk 5 lakh from BNP leader Fazlul Haque Ujjal by threatening him with “crossfire”. According to the case statement, the plaintiff, former district BNP associate training secretary and former joint convener of Shahjahanpur Tahan unit BNP Mohammad Fazlul Haque Ujjal, alleged that on February 24, 2016, then OC Alamgir Hossain chased and stopped his car, detained him and took him to the police station. There, the OC allegedly demanded Tk 5 lakh, threatening to kill him in a “crossfire”, the statement said. Ujjal said he was forced to pay the money through his wife and a colleague. Despite this, he was later arrested and sent to court in an unknown case. After a long delay, on February 25, 2025, Ujjal filed the extortion case with the court. The court assigned Mostafa Manjur, additional superintendent of police of Bogura Sadar Circle, to investigate the case. Following the investigation, he submitted a charge sheet to the court. Court inspector Shahidul Islam said that when Alamgir Hossain appeared before the court following a summons, the judge ordered that he be sent to jail after the hearing. He was later taken to Bogura District Jail. Plaintiff Fazlul Haque Ujjal said some police officers carried out repression and extortion against opposition leaders and activists by taking advantage of the political situation at that time. “I want a fair trial for this injustice so that no one dares to abuse power in the future,” he said.

In a major move to boost investor confidence, Bangladesh Bank has simplified the process for foreign investors to transfer shares and repatriate sale proceeds from non-listed public and private limited companies. The central bank issued a comprehensive master circular (EID Circular No. 01), consolidating and updating regulations from 2018 and 2020 to create a more predictable, efficient, and transparent exit mechanism for non-resident investors. Prashanta Kumar Mondal, Public Relations Officer of the Bangladesh Investment Development Authority (BIDA), shared the details in a press release on Monday. Under the new guidelines, Authorized Dealer (AD) banks have been granted significantly more power to process transactions without seeking prior approval from the central bank. Higher Transaction Limits: AD banks can now process share transfers and repatriations up to Tk 100 crore following prescribed valuation methods. Joint Declarations: For transactions up to Tk 1 crore, transfers can be completed based on a joint declaration by the buyer and seller, bypassing the need for independent valuation. Fixed Timelines: Once documentation is complete, share transfers must be finalized within 45 days, and the repatriation of sale proceeds must be processed within five working days. Institutional Oversight: Every AD bank is required to form an internal committee led by senior management to review valuation and repatriation applications. The reform package was finalized on November 19 last year by a high-level Capital Repatriation Committee, led by BIDA Executive Member Nahian Rahman Rochi and supported by Bangladesh Bank. BIDA Executive Chairman Chowdhury Ashik Mahmud Bin Harun emphasized that a healthy environment for Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) relies on investors feeling confident at every stage of their journey—including the exit. "By reducing approval complexities, allowing easier repatriation of sale proceeds, and simplifying valuation and documentation, Bangladesh is moving toward that goal," said the BIDA chief. "These initiatives are the foundation of a reliable environment for foreign investment," he said.

Prime Minister Tarique Rahman will inaugurate the government’s landmark “Family Card” programme tomorrow, aiming to strengthen women’s empowerment and ensure their rights, dignity and economic independence. The inauguration ceremony will be held at the T&T playground in Banani, adjacent to the Korail slum, at 10:00 am. The initiative is part of the government’s effort to advance social protection by recognising women as heads of households and enhancing their role in national development and social justice. Social Welfare Minister Abu Zafar Md Zahid Hossain announced the launch at a press conference at the Multipurpose Hall of the Ministry of Finance on Monday, held ahead of the programme’s inauguration. Finance Minister Amir Khosru Mahmud Chowdhury, Prime Minister’s Adviser Rashed Al Mahmud Titumir, State Minister for Social Welfare Farzana Sharmin, State Minister for LGRD Mir Shahe Alam and other officials were present. Under the pilot phase, the programme will be implemented in 15 wards of 13 city corporations and unions across 13 districts. Zahid Hossain said committees at ward, union, upazila and district levels were formed to identify eligible beneficiaries. Ward committees conducted door-to-door surveys to gather data on households’ socio-economic conditions, including family size, education, housing status, assets and remittance flow. The information was later verified by union and upazila committees. During the pilot phase, data on 67,854 women-headed households were collected. Using a software-based Proxy Means Test (PMT), households were classified into several income categories. Out of 51,805 households initially identified as extreme poor, poor and lower-middle-income, verification found 47,777 households with valid data. After removing cases involving multiple benefits, government employment or pension entitlements, a total of 37,567 households were selected for assistance. Officials said the automated PMT-based system would reduce the risk of corruption, nepotism or manual interference in beneficiary selection. Each eligible household will receive a modern “Family Card” equipped with a contactless chip, QR code and NFC technology. Each card will cover up to five family members, while larger joint families may receive additional cards. Under the pilot programme, each selected household will receive a monthly allowance of Tk 2,500 through the Government-to-Person (G2P) digital payment system directly to the women’s mobile wallets or bank accounts. For the pilot implementation until June 2026, the government has allocated Tk 38.07 crore. Of the amount, Tk 25.15 crore will be distributed as direct cash support, while Tk 12.92 crore will cover programme implementation, including data collection, system development and card production. The minister said the programme will be provided free of cost and beneficiaries will not need to collect the cards from offices as officials will deliver them directly to their homes. He added that the government will review the pilot programme every month, with a three-month “lesson learning” period continuing until June 30 before considering further expansion.  

Commerce Minister Khandakar Abdul Muktadir on Monday said there will be no increase in edible oil prices and there is no supply shortage in the market, urging consumers not to engage in panic buying. “Panic buying could create temporary supply pressure in some areas, unnecessarily complicating the situation,” he said while talking to reporters after a meeting with importers and refinery owners to review the overall supply of edible oil at Secretariat. He said the meeting was held to review the situation following media reports over the past few days about an alleged shortage of edible oil in some areas and incidents of selling the product at Tk 2 higher per litre. He also urged the consumers to refrain from buying excessively in panic. Since products are available in the market, unnecessary competition allows unscrupulous traders to take advantage, he said. Mentioning that there is adequate stock of edible oil in the market, the minister said, “We held the meeting to review the situation. We found that there is sufficient supply in the market. In some places, panic buying by consumers may temporarily exhaust stocks in a few shops.” Sharing his personal observation, Muktadir said in a market in the capital, large roadside shops had sufficient stock at fixed prices while a small shop inside the market was attempting to sell limited stock at two to three taka above the official rate per litre. Responding to a question from journalists, he said there is no shortage of edible oil, fuel oil, or gas, urging media and public not to associate these products with “shortage,” which could create confusion. The minister added that market monitoring and supervision will be strengthened and called on everyone to refrain from spreading rumours or panic. The National Consumer Rights Protection Directorate under the Commerce Ministry is already monitoring the market while district administrations will continue their regular drives, he said.  National Board of Revenue Chairman Md. Abdur Rahman Khan and Commerce Ministry Secretary Mahbubur Rahman attended the meeting.    

Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) has issued strict directives to reduce fuel and electricity consumption as part of the government’s broader efforts to address the ongoing global energy situation. The office order, signed by DSCC Secretary Mohammad Nasim Ahmed, came into effect immediately, said DSCC Public Relations Officer Rasel Rahman. According to a DSCC office order issued on Monday, fuel allocation for vehicles used by officials will be reduced by 30 percent, while fuel supply for waste management vehicles will be cut by 20 percent. The directive was issued under the instruction of DSCC Administrator Md Abdus Salam with the aim of ensuring cost reduction and efficient use of resources. In addition, officials have been asked to limit the use of vehicles for both official and personal purposes. The city corporation also announced several measures to reduce electricity consumption in offices. Officials and staff have been instructed to avoid using electric lights during daytime if sufficient natural light is available and to keep doors, windows, or blinds open to maximise natural lighting. Offices have also been directed to use only half of the existing electric lights and completely avoid unnecessary lighting. The directive further stated that fans, air conditioners and other electrical appliances should not be operated unless necessary. For air conditioners, the temperature must be maintained at 25 degrees Celsius or above. Employees have also been asked to switch off lights, fans and air conditioners before leaving office rooms. In addition, unnecessary lighting in corridors, stairways and washrooms has been prohibited, while all electrical equipment including computers, printers and scanners must be turned off after office hours. The city corporation has also instructed all departments and regional offices to strictly comply with the measures.

Prime Minister Tarique Rahman on Monday directed officials concerned to explore ways to make the country’s zakat management system more effective and well organised. He gave the instruction at a meeting on zakat management held at the Cabinet Division in Secretariat, said Prime Minister’s Deputy Secretary Jahidul Islam Rony. The meeting was attended by Religious Affairs Minister Kazi Shah Mofazzal Houssain Kaikobad, Religious Affairs Secretary Munshi Alauddin Al Azad and As-Sunnah Foundation Chairman and eminent Islamic thinker Sheikh Ahmadullah, During the meeting, a decision was taken to reorganise the Zakat Board. “It was also proposed to form a committee led by the Religious Affairs Minister to review the issue and place recommendations before the Prime Minister,” Rony said. The proposed committee may include the khatib of Baitul Mukarram National Mosque Mufti Abdul Malek, Sheikh Ahmadullah and several leading Islamic economists and noted scholars. Officials said the Religious Affairs Ministry will propose the names for the full committee within the next ten days. The committee will then submit recommendations to the Prime Minister on improving zakat management and restructuring the Zakat Board. ‘Let’s go to war,’ PM says before leaving for work Earlier on Saturday, at an iftar programme held in honour of alem-ulema Islamic scholars and orphans, Prime Minister Tarique Rahman said a proper zakat management system could play an important role in reducing poverty in the country within the next 10 to 15 years. The meeting also discussed how an effective zakat management system could help reduce poverty in Bangladesh.  

State Minister for Foreign Affairs Shama Obaed Islam on Monday said Bangladesh has sought consular access following the arrest of the prime accused and an associate in the killing of Osman Hadi by the Special Task Force (STF) of West Bengal Police in India. She said further steps would be taken following due process once Bangladesh receives feedback from the Indian side. “We came to know they have been placed on a 14-day remand. Our Deputy High Commission in Kolkata is in contact with the authorities, and we have sought consular access,” she told reporters at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. She said Bangladesh is still gathering detailed information about the arrests. “The information we have so far is not sufficient. We will proceed once we receive adequate details. Since the incident has just occurred, we need to wait,” she said, adding, “We hope India will help us in this regard.” Based on information provided by Bangladesh’s strategic intelligence agencies, the two main accused in the murder of Inqilab Moncho convener Osman Hadi, Rahul alias Faisal Karim Masud 37, a resident of Patuakhali, and Alamgir Hossain34, a resident of Dhaka, were arrested from the Bangaon area of West Bengal. According to various sources, Indian authorities have recently taken a tougher stance against individuals accused of terrorism who fled Bangladesh, particularly following the recent visit of a senior official of Bangladesh’s Defence Intelligence to India. Reports suggest that the suspects had been moving between various locations in India after entering the country following the killing. They were allegedly attempting to take shelter near the Bangaon border area with the intention of returning to Bangladesh. Acting on intelligence shared by Bangladesh, Indian authorities conducted an operation and arrested the two Bangladeshi nationals on the intervening night of March 7–8, 2026. Investigators said the suspects had fled Bangladesh after killing political activist Osman Hadi. They reportedly entered India illegally through the Meghalaya border and travelled to several locations before arriving in Bangaon in West Bengal, allegedly planning to cross back into Bangladesh. A case has been registered in this connection. The suspects were produced before the relevant court on Monday and were remanded to police custody.

Bangladesh Association of Banks (BAB) Chairman Abdul Hai Sarker on Monday said the flow of inward remittances is expected to remain stable despite the ongoing conflict in the Middle East, provided Bangladeshi expatriate workers can continue their jobs without disruption. He made the remarks while talking to reporters after a meeting with Bangladesh Bank Governor Md Mostaqur Rahman at the central bank headquarters. “If our expatriate workers in the Middle East can continue their regular jobs, remittance inflow will remain steady,” the BAB chairman said. However, the situation could change if the conflict leads to job losses or disruptions at workplaces, he said. “If the war affects their employment or working environment, it may negatively impact remittance inflows,” he said. It is too early to predict the outcome as much depends on the duration and stability of the situation, said the BAB chaimran. During the meeting, Abdul Hai Sarker also stressed the need for regular coordination between the central bank and commercial banks on policy decisions to avoid gaps in implementation. He said discussions also covered measures to maintain stability in weaker banks within the financial sector through necessary support. The meeting further addressed the implementation of International Financial Reporting Standard (IFRS)-9, which requires banks to maintain provisions for expected credit losses. The BAB chairman said a circular has already been issued and the standard is scheduled to come into effect in 2028. “While we are following international standards, banks are exploring ways to implement them effectively within Bangladesh’s socio-economic context,” he said noting that the country’s banking infrastructure and capacity differ from those of developed economies. He also expressed optimism about the central bank’s supportive stance toward private banks.  

Reviving private sector-led growth will be critical for restoring Bangladesh’s economic momentum and ensuring sustainable development, according to a new policy report launched on Monday by the Metropolitan Chamber of Commerce and Industry (MCCI). M Masrur Reaz, Chairman and CEO of Policy Exchange Bangladesh presented the report titled “Reviving Private Sector-led Economic Growth: Critical Issues and Priorities Facing the New Government in Bangladesh,” at a programme  organised by MCCI. The report provides an evidence-based assessment of Bangladesh’s current economic challenges and outlines a set of reform priorities aimed at restoring macroeconomic stability, strengthening investment climate, and enabling sustainable growth driven by the private sector. Speaking at the launch, Reaz said Bangladesh stands at a ‘critical juncture’ as the economy transitions from crisis management to recovery amid persistent structural constraints and global uncertainty. He said although the country experienced decades of strong growth averaging around 6–7 percent, economic momentum has slowed significantly since 2022 due to a combination of global shocks, domestic policy weaknesses and institutional challenges. According to the report, Bangladesh’s GDP growth has dropped to below 4 percent in FY2025, while inflation, declining private investment and tightening credit conditions have continued to weigh on business confidence and economic activity. The study highlights that structural weaknesses in public finance, the banking sector, export competitiveness and the investment climate are undermining the country’s growth prospects. Without comprehensive reforms, these vulnerabilities could push the economy toward prolonged stagnation, it warned. The report identifies seven priority areas for policy reform to revive private sector-led growth. These include macroeconomic stabilisation, fiscal management and debt sustainability, banking sector reforms, export diversification, private investment mobilisation, energy security, and skills development. It also stresses that restoring macroeconomic stability should be the immediate priority for policymakers. The study recommends tighter monetary and fiscal coordination, improved revenue mobilisation, and a more flexible exchange rate regime to stabilise inflation and rebuild foreign exchange reserves. In the financial sector, the report highlights the urgent need to address rising non-performing loans and governance weaknesses in banks, warning that these issues are constraining credit flows and discouraging private investment. Export diversification is another key challenge identified in the report. While Bangladesh’s export sector remains heavily dependent on ready-made garments, the report calls for targeted policies to develop new high-potential sectors and strengthen global value chain integration, particularly as the country prepares for its post-LDC transition. To boost investment, the study recommends improving regulatory predictability, modernising business-related laws and strengthening the investment promotion framework to attract both domestic and foreign investors. The report also emphasises the importance of energy sector reforms to ensure reliable and affordable power supply for businesses, as well as expanding skill development programmes to create a future-ready workforce capable of supporting productivity growth and job creation. MCCI leaders said the report aims to provide policymakers with a comprehensive reform roadmap to restore economic confidence and enable Bangladesh to move toward a more resilient and competitive growth model.  

State Minister for Foreign Affairs Shama Obaed Islam on Monday sought greater Turkish investment in Bangladesh and expressed readiness to facilitate such engagement. She also highlighted the growing defence cooperation between the two countries and underscored the importance of ‘continued collaboration’ in capacity building, and defence industry cooperation. The issues were discussed when Turkish Ambassador to Bangladesh Ramis Şen paid a courtesy call on the  State Minister at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The State Minister sought Türkiye’s support for Bangladesh’s candidature for the Presidency of the 81st Session of the United Nations General Assembly for the term 2026–2027. Ambassador Şen conveyed that the Republic of Türkiye would extend its support to Bangladesh’s candidature, said the MoFA. He congratulated the State Minister on her recent appointment and reaffirmed Türkiye’s commitment to further deepening the longstanding friendship and partnership between the two countries. During the meeting, the State Minister warmly welcomed the Ambassador and underscored the excellent bilateral relations between Bangladesh and Türkiye, which are rooted in shared values, cultural affinity, and deep-rooted civilisational bonds. The discussions focused on further strengthening bilateral cooperation in key areas. Both sides noted with satisfaction the positive momentum in bilateral trade and emphasised the shared objective of increasing the trade volume between the two countries. The State Minister expressed appreciation to the Turkish government for its humanitarian support to the forcibly displaced Rohingyas sheltered in Bangladesh and for its consistent support to Bangladesh in international forums. She also expressed hope that Türkiye will play a key role in the repatriation of the Rohingyas to Myanmar. The State Minister welcomed the growing cultural and educational engagement between Bangladesh and Türkiye and highlighted the popularity of Turkish culture in the country. He proposed the establishment of a full-fledged cultural institute in Bangladesh to further promote Turkish heritage. In response, the Turkish Ambassador referred to the existing proposal for the establishment of the Yunus Emre Institute at the University of Dhaka and noted that the initiative could gradually expand, starting initially as a language training institute and potentially developing into broader cultural programs in the future. The State Minister also expressed the hope that, once the Parliament of Bangladesh sits in, efforts would be made to rejuvenate the Bangladesh-Turkey Parliamentary Friendship Group to further strengthen legislative and people‑to‑people ties, noting the role such friendship groups play in enhancing bilateral cooperation and parliamentary diplomacy.

Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed on Monday said two suspects in Hadi murder case who were arrested in India will be brought back to Bangladesh under the existing extradition treaty between the two countries. “The Home Ministry has already taken steps regarding the arrest of the two accused while the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has been requested to take necessary measures to bring them back in line with the the extradition agreement,” said the minister. He made the remarks while talking to reporters after attending a district law and order committee meeting in Cox’s Bazar, his first such meeting in his home district after assuming office. Efforts on to bring back 2 Hadi murder suspects held in India: IGP Salahuddin Ahmed also said a list of drug traders is being prepared in a highly professional manner. “The list will not be made public as doing so could create political influence and lead to possible errors,” he said. Incidents of mob violence will not be allowed in the country and all terrorists and extortionists will be brought under the law to ensure good governance, said Salahuddin. The minister also announced measures to restore discipline in the tourism sector of Cox’s Bazar. He said illegal permanent and temporary structures set up on the sand dunes along the sea beach will be removed within a week and the tourist areas will be kept clean. He further said CCTV cameras will be installed at important points in the town to improve the law and order situation. Among others, lawmakers Shahjahan Chowdhury and Lutfur Rahman Kajol, Deputy Commissioner Mohammad Abdul Mannan, Superintendent of Police ANM Sajedur Rahman and Cox’s Bazar district BNP general secretary Shamima Ara Swapna were present.  

European Union Election Observation Mission Bangladesh 2026 (EUEOM-BD 2026) has appreciated the Election Commission for its significant support and cooperation extended during the 13th parliamentary election. “The professionalism, dedication, coordinated efforts and prompt support demonstrated by your team immensely contributed towards understanding the electoral environment, policies, practices, modalities and thus significantly facilitated in smooth execution of our assigned mission related to BD National Election-2026,” said the EUEOM-BD 2026 in a letter on Monday. The letter written by EUEOM-BD-2026 Security Expert Roger Clayton was handed over to EC Senior Secretary Akhtar Ahmed. “On behalf of the EUEOM, I would like to avail this opportunity to express our deep appreciation for the invaluable support and cooperation extended by the team of officials from the Election Commission during the 13th national election,” said Roger Clayton. In the letter, the EUEOM-BD 2026 mentioned noteworthy support, input, information updates and guidance from several officials which substantially assisted the EU team in planning. The officials are Project Director of EC’s IDEA (2nd Phase) project Brigadier General Azizur R Siddiqui, EC Director (Public Relations) Ruhul Amin Mollik and EC’s Deputy Secretary (Security & Protocol Coordinator) Shahid Abdus Salam. “Your time befitting assistance, unwavering support and commitment to duty were instrumental in aiding effective coordination and understanding during the period,” said the EU Election Observation Mission. “We look forward to continued cooperation in the future,” it said.  

The Cabinet Division has ordered conducting mobile court drives nationwide to ensure uninterrupted fuel supply and prevent artificial shortages in the market. The Cabinet Division’s District Magistrate Monitoring Wing issued a letter to all Deputy Commissioners (DCs) across the country to take steps in this regard . A letter signed by Nahida Akter Tania, Senior Assistant Secretary of the Cabinet Division, said the special initiative aims to maintain order in the fuel market and ensure that no artificial crisis arises. The Energy and Mineral Resources Division on Sunday requested the Cabinet Secretary to instruct deputy commissioners (DCs) across the country to conduct mobile courts to prevent illegal hoarding of fuel and sales at prices higher than the government-set rates. In a letter sent to the Cabinet Secretary, the division said media reports indicate that some unscrupulous traders are stockpiling fuel illegally in an attempt to create an artificial shortage in the market amid the ongoing crisis in the Middle East. To address the situation, the government has already fixed the amount of fuel that can be supplied based on the type of vehicle. Despite this measure, there have been reports of petrol pumps and filling stations selling fuel at prices higher than the government-approved rates, hoarding excess quantities for higher profits, selling fuel in the open market and engaging in smuggling. In this situation, the Energy and Mineral Resources Division requested the Cabinet Secretary to issue necessary instructions to deputy commissioners to conduct mobile courts to stop illegal hoarding of fuel, prevent sales above the fixed price, halt open market sales and curb smuggling.  

Three people were killed and two others injured when a CNG-run auto-rickshaw hit a human hauler on Bagha-Lalpur road in Bagha upazila of Rajshahi district on Monday. The deceased were identified as Shariful Islam, 42, driver of the CNG-run auto-rickshaw, Bidhan Mistri, 45, son of Nirapad Das and Rokena Begum, 90, wife of Nazim Uddin of the upazila. The accident occurred around 7:30 am at Chandipur when the CNG-run auto-rickshaw, carrying four passengers, collided head-on with the human hauler locally known as Bhotbhoti due to poor visibility caused by the dense fog, leaving two killed on the spot and three others injured, said Serajul Haque, officer-in-charge of Bagha Police Station. One of the injured died on way to the Bagha Upazila Health Complex while the others were shifted to Rajshahi Medical College and Hospital. Police seized the two vehicles.

UAE Aid and the Emirates Red Crescent have distributed Ramadan food parcels among 4,000 underprivileged families in different parts of Bangladesh, bringing timely relief to communities observing the holy month. The initiative was taken to support vulnerable families with essential food supplies so they can prepare daily iftar meals more easily during the holy month of Ramadan, said a press release issued on Monday. Each beneficiary family received a food package weighing approximately 24 kilograms, containing essential food items necessary for household consumption throughout the month. Rashed Mohammed Naser Almail Alzaabi, Director of the Foreign Aid Department at the UAE Embassy in Dhaka, personally visited the distribution site and observed the activities, interacting with beneficiary families and local organizers to ensure the smooth implementation of the humanitarian effort. Speaking on the occasion, Alzaabi said, “Ramadan is a time of compassion, generosity, and solidarity with those in need. Through this initiative, the UAE Government and the Emirates Red Crescent aim to stand beside the people of Bangladesh and help ease the burden on vulnerable families during this blessed month. We are grateful for the opportunity to share the spirit of Ramadan with communities here.” Beneficiary families expressed heartfelt appreciation to the Government of the United Arab Emirates and the Emirates Red Crescent for extending this support. Many noted that the assistance would significantly help their households manage daily meals during Ramadan and bring comfort during a time of reflection and community. The distribution is part of the UAE’s broader humanitarian commitment to supporting communities around the world, particularly during important occasions such as Ramadan, reinforcing the longstanding friendship and cooperation between the United Arab Emirates and Bangladesh.  

Firefighters managed to douse the fire that broke out at a multistoried building in Mirpur-2 of the capital, after several hours of efforts on Monday. The fire broke out on the 2nd floor of the 11-storey building named LA Plaza around 1:52 pm , said Anwarul Islam, warehouse inspector at the Fire Service and Civil Defence (FSCD) headquarters media cell. On information, four firefighting units rushed to the spot and doused the flame around 16:35 pm. Twenty-four people including ten women, who got stranded in a room were rescued by the Fire Service men. Among them, a woman was taken to Suhrawardy Medical College and Hospital, said Talha bin Jashim, station officer of Fire Service and Civil Defence (FSCD) headquarters media cell. What caused the fire could not be known immediately. No casualties were reported till the filing of this report.

Iraq’s head coach, Graham Arnold, has appealed to FIFA to postpone his team’s intercontinental World Cup playoff due to the disruptions caused by the escalating war in Iran. The Iraqi squad faces major challenges ahead of their winner-takes-all match against either Suriname or Bolivia, set for March 31 in Monterrey, Mexico. With Iraqi airspace closed until April 1, Arnold’s team — mostly made up of domestic league players cannot fully assemble. Many players are also unable to secure visas for Mexico because of embassy closures, while Arnold himself is stuck in the United Arab Emirates amid the conflict. “Please help us with this game because right now we are struggling to get our players out of Iraq,” Arnold, a former Australian national team coach, told the Australian Associated Press. The turmoil has already forced the cancellation of a planned training camp in Houston. Arnold said relying only on overseas-based players is not a viable solution. “It wouldn’t be our best team, and we need our best squad for the country’s biggest game in 40 years,” he said. Bangladesh Navy, in a special drive, seized about 2.30 lakh pieces of Yaba tablets worth around Tk 11.50 crore from Hnila Union of Teknaf upazila in Cox’s Bazar district on Sunday. Based on secret information that an organised drug trafficking gang, had stockpiled a large quantity of drugs in the Hnila area of Teknaf for sale and smuggling. Later, a team of the Bangladesh Navy conducted a drive in the Rongikhali area of the upazila and seized two white sacks from a den of alleged drug peddlers, said an ISPR press release. During the drive, the team recovered two white sacks from a den of the alleged drug peddlers and recovered 2.30 lakh pieces of Yaba tablets from the two sacks, worth Tk 11.50 crore. The seized Yaba pills were handed over to Teknaf Police Station.  

The government has sent five Additional Inspectors General of Police (Addl IGPs) on retirement. The Public Security Division of the Home Ministry issued separate notifications in this regard on Monday. They are Tawfique Mahbub Chowdhury (Principal of the Bangladesh Police Academy, Sardah), Kusum Dewan (River Police), Abu Hasan Muhammad Tariq (Officer on Special Duty - OSD), Abdul Alim Mahmud (Officer on Special Duty - OSD), Masudur Rahman Bhuiyan (Assigned as TR at Police Headquarters) According to the notifications, the decision was taken under section 45 of the Government Service Act, 2018 (Act No. 57 of 2018). The order will come into effect immediately.

The High Commissioner of Canada to Bangladesh, Ajit Singh, on Monday met State Minister for Foreign Affairs Shama Obaed Islam and discussed issues of mutual interest. Human Rights Watch reported Monday that the Israeli military “unlawfully” targeted a village in southern Lebanon with white phosphorus shells, a controversial incendiary weapon. By geolocating and verifying seven images, the group said Israel fired white phosphorus artillery at residential areas in the village of Yohmor. The strikes occurred hours after the Israeli military warned residents of Yohmor and dozens of other southern Lebanese villages to evacuate. Human Rights Watch could not independently confirm whether anyone remained in the area or if civilians were harmed. Israeli helicopters conduct overnight raid deep in Lebanon The Israeli military did not immediately respond to requests for comment. In previous statements, it has said white phosphorus is used as a smoke screen and not to target civilians. Human rights experts say using white phosphorus in populated areas violates international law. The chemical can ignite buildings and burn human flesh down to the bone, leaving survivors at risk of infection or organ and respiratory failure, even from minor burns. Ramzi Kaiss, a Lebanon researcher at Human Rights Watch, said, “The Israeli military’s unlawful use of white phosphorus over residential areas is extremely alarming and will have dire consequences for civilians.” Groups including Human Rights Watch and Amnesty International noted that Israel also used white phosphorus repeatedly during its last war with Hezbollah over a year ago in southern Lebanon while civilians were still present.

A joint operation is underway against terrorists at Jungle Salimpur in Sitakunda, an area notorious for criminal activities in Chattogram. Around 4,000 personnel from army, police, Rapid Action Battalion (RAB), and Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) started the operation around 5 am. Vehicles of the army, police water cannons and various firearms are being used in the operation. Chattogram District Police Additional Superintendent (Media) Md. Russel said the joint forces have surrounded Jungle Salimpur and are conducting searches inside for weapons and drugs.  “Several terrorists are reported to have been detained by afternoon though police have not yet confirmed specific details,” he added.  

Private investment in Bangladesh has fallen to a 10-year low while inflation, high interest rates and policy uncertainty continue to challenge businesses, according to a paper presented by the Dhaka Chamber of Commerce and Industry (DCCI) on Monday. The paper titled “Current State & Future Outlook of Bangladesh Economy: Private Sector Perspective (July–December 2025)” was presented at a seminar held at the DCCI auditorium in the city. According to the paper, private investment stood at 22.03% of GDP in FY2025, reflecting a decade-low level as high lending rates, political uncertainty, currency volatility and bureaucratic delays discouraged both domestic and foreign investors. Bangladesh’s economy reached an estimated $456 billion in FY2025 with a growth rate of 3.49%, while exports rose to $48.28 billion and remittance inflow reached $30.33 billion, the study said. However, inflation remained elevated at 8.49% in December 2025, with non-food inflation rising to 9.13%, posing a continued burden on consumers and businesses alike. The chamber noted that rising interest rates exceeding 16% in many cases have slowed private sector borrowing and investment, while private sector credit growth dropped to 6.1% in December 2025, the lowest in at least four years. The paper also highlighted growing global uncertainties that could affect Bangladesh’s trade and investment outlook. It said the global economy is expected to grow by 3.3% in 2026, but geopolitical tensions, including conflicts involving the United States, Israel and Iran, and potential disruptions in global energy supply routes such as the Strait of Hormuz, could create long-term volatility in global trade. In addition, new global tariff policies and shifting trade dynamics could further complicate export prospects for developing economies like Bangladesh, it added. Bangladesh’s upcoming graduation from the Least Developed Country (LDC) status will bring new trade and financing challenges unless adequate preparations are taken, the DCCI warned. Weaknesses in the banking and capital market systems could pose risks to development financing after graduation, while maintaining market access and export competitiveness will become increasingly difficult, it said. The chamber recommended deferring LDC graduation by at least three years to allow the country more time to strengthen competitiveness, implement a transition strategy and adjust policies. The paper also reviewed the performance and challenges of several key sectors— Bangladesh’s readymade garment (RMG) exports reached $19.37 billion, although the sector faced negative growth compared to the previous period and continued to struggle with limited high-end product diversification. The leather sector, the country’s second-largest export industry, recorded exports of $609.86 million in the first half of FY26, but holds only about 3% of the global market, highlighting the need for better compliance and infrastructure. Pharmaceutical exports, meanwhile, increased 20.32% to $118.81 million, while light engineering exports grew 10.51% to $315.52 million during the same period. Key recommendations To improve the economic outlook, the DCCI proposed a series of policy measures, including broadening the tax base, introducing a fully automated tax management system and easing the policy rate gradually to encourage investment. The chamber also suggested improving law and order, accelerating structural reforms, strengthening trade negotiations with new markets, and enhancing logistics and energy infrastructure to reduce business costs. Strengthening supply chains, expanding renewable energy capacity and improving the ease of doing business were also identified as key priorities for sustaining long-term economic growth. In the seminar, business leaders stressed that Bangladesh must take timely policy reforms to maintain macroeconomic stability and strengthen private sector confidence amid growing global and domestic challenges. They said coordinated efforts in fiscal management, investment facilitation, trade diversification and infrastructure development will be crucial to sustaining economic growth and ensuring a smooth transition as the country prepares for its LDC graduation.

Inspector General of Police Md Ali Hossain Fakir on Monday said diplomatic efforts are underway to bring back two suspects in the Hadi murder case who were arrested in India . “We may soon see them brought back to Bangladesh,” he said at a press briefing at the Police Headquarters Media Centre in the capital. Responding to a question, the IGP said the process is being carried out through diplomatic channels with the involvement of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. IGP zero tolerance against extortion, orders strict action nationwide India’s West Bengal Police Special Task Force (STF) has arrested prime accused Faisal Karim Masud, 37, and his associate Alamgir Hossain in the murder of Inqilab Moncho spokesperson Sharif Osman Bin Hadi from the border area of Bongaon in West Bengal. IGP Hossain Fakir said police have adopted a zero-tolerance policy against extortion and action will be taken against extortionists regardless of their political affiliation. He said block raids have already been conducted against terrorists, extortionists and drug traders and such drives are ongoing. Referring to the trust deficit that developed between police and public in the past, he said efforts must be made to restore public confidence. “To achieve this, we want to establish every district headquarters police station (sadar police station) as a ‘zero complaint thana’,” he said, adding that a circle officer will continuously monitor the overall activities of those police stations. Police aim to provide services in such a way that people visiting police stations can return with satisfaction and without any complaints against police, he added. The IGP also said police reaction time will be reduced to the minimum level and that officers will immediately visit the scene and take necessary legal steps following any incident. He said effective measures will be taken to prevent violence against women including rape. The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) will also be further modernised to improve the quality of investigations and ensure speedy completion of probes so that the real offenders can be brought to justice. With Eid-ul-Fitr approaching, the IGP said measures have already been taken to ensure the safe travel of homebound people on roads, highways, waterways and railways. He said robbery, extortion and piracy will be prevented on highways. He said initiatives have been taken to address such issues through coordination with labour leaders, factory owners and organisations including BGMEA and BKMEA, alongside identifying vulnerable garment factories. A training aircraft of Bangladesh Air Force (BAF) made an emergency landing at Jashore airport after developing a mechanical fault, the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) said on Monday. The aircraft landed safely on the runway following the technical problem, it said. The pilot remained unharmed and no damage to the aircraft was reported, it added. The price of gold in Bangladesh has fallen by Tk 3,266 per bhori, with the rate of 22-carat gold now set at Tk 264,948, according to the Bangladesh Jewellers Association (Bajus). In a notification issued Monday, Bajus said the new rate was fixed in line with the overall market situation following a decline in the price of pure gold, locally known as tejabi gold. The revised prices came into effect immediately. Gold prices fall sharply in Bangladesh as 22-carat gold drops Tk 9,214 Under the new rates, 22-carat gold will be sold at Tk 264,948 per bhori (11.664 grams). The price of 21-carat gold has been set at Tk 252,876 per bhori, while 18-carat gold will cost Tk 216,775 per bhori. Gold produced using the traditional method will be priced at Tk 176,943 per bhori. Earlier, on March 4, Bajus reduced gold prices by Tk 9,214 per bhori, setting the rate of 22-carat gold at Tk 268,214. So far this year, gold prices in the country have been revised 38 times, including 24 increases and 14 decreases. Silver prices have also been reduced. Bajus cut the price of 22-carat silver by Tk 175 per bhori to Tk 6,357. The price of 21-carat silver has been set at Tk 6,065 per bhori, while 18-carat silver will cost Tk 5,190 per bhori. Silver produced using the traditional method will be sold at Tk 3,907 per bhori. So far in 2026, silver prices have been revised 23 times in the local market, including 14 increases and nine decreases.

Milon, 28, a merchant agent of bKash who came to the filling station with his motorcycle to buy fuel, said he had been unable to get petrol since Saturday night. “I haven’t been able to get fuel since last night. How will I manage my duty and travel?” he said. Additional BGB members deployed along Benapole border to prevent fuel smuggling At North East Petrol Pump in Pathantula, fuel was being sold in limited quantities in the evening, with motorcyclists receiving no more than Tk 200 worth of fuel. A similar situation was observed at Jalalabad Petrol Pump in Ambarkhana where motorbikes were given fuel worth Tk 200 to Tk 300 at most. Pump employees also said octane was unavailable when some customers requested it. However, the pump’s manager or owner could not be reached for comment. Filling station owners said the situation has continued since Friday after demand for fuel surged on Thursday, creating a shortfall. Leaders of Filling Station Owners’ Association held a meeting with Sylhet Deputy Commissioner Mohammad Sarwar Alam on Sunday afternoon to discuss the matter. After the meeting, the leaders said some stations in Sylhet are facing supply shortages due to new directives issued by the Bangladesh Petroleum Corporation (BPC). They also submitted a memorandum to the deputy commissioner demanding measures to ensure adequate supply. Riasad Azim, organising secretary of the Sylhet Petrol Pump Owners’ Association, said, “The problem is with the supply system. We are not getting fuel from the depot as per demand.” He hoped that the issue would be resolved soon following discussions with the district administration. Deputy Commissioner Mohammad Sarwar Alam said there is no actual fuel shortage in the country and sufficient stock remains available. “However, the administration will work according to government instructions considering the possibility of a shortage. We are in contact with the ministry and hope the situation in Sylhet will improve within a couple of days,” he said. Sylhet city BNP general secretary Emdad Hossain, who was present at the meeting, said panic buying by consumers after hearing about a possible shortage has contributed to the situation. “People are buying 10 litres instead of the usual two litres after hearing about a possible crisis, which is creating an artificial shortage,” he said, urging the public not to stockpile fuel unnecessarily. Amid the ongoing conflict in the Middle East, the Bangladesh Petroleum Corporation on Friday imposed restrictions on fuel purchase. Under the directive, a motorcycle can receive a maximum of two litres of petrol or octane per day, while private cars are allowed up to 10 litres daily. SUVs, jeeps and microbuses can take 20–25 litres a day. Pickups and local buses are allowed to buy 70–80 litres of diesel daily, while long-distance buses, trucks and covered vans can receive 200–220 litres per day.

Mojtaba Khamenei, the second son of Iran’s late leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, has been chosen as the new supreme leader of Iran amid the ongoing war involving the United States and Israel, according to state media reports. Ali Khamenei was killed on the first day of the war when attacks targeted his compound in Tehran. The strike also killed Mojtaba’s mother, wife and one of his sisters. The 56-year-old cleric was reportedly not present at the time and survived the bombing. Iran’s Assembly of Experts, the 88-member clerical body responsible for selecting the country’s supreme leader, confirmed his appointment and called for national unity. In a statement carried by state media on Sunday, the assembly said Mojtaba Khamenei was chosen through a “decisive vote”. The body urged Iranians, “especially the elites and intellectuals of the seminaries and universities”, to “pledge allegiance to the leadership and maintain unity”. Although he has never run for public office or faced a nationwide vote, Mojtaba Khamenei has long been considered an influential figure within the inner circle of Iran’s leadership. Over the years he developed strong connections with the powerful Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps and its affiliated paramilitary forces. His rise to the top position suggests that hardline factions within Iran’s political establishment continue to hold significant influence, potentially signalling limited willingness by Tehran to enter negotiations in the near future. For years Mojtaba Khamenei had been mentioned as a likely successor to his father, who served nearly eight years as president and then ruled as supreme leader for more than three decades before his death. However, the new leader has largely kept a low public profile. He rarely gives speeches or public lectures, and many Iranians have never heard his voice despite his long-standing influence within the ruling establishment. His possible succession had long been considered sensitive because it could resemble a hereditary transfer of power similar to the monarchy that ruled Iran before the Iranian Revolution. Allegations over protest crackdowns For nearly two decades, critics inside and outside Iran have linked Mojtaba Khamenei to the suppression of anti-government protests. Reformist figures first accused him of influencing the disputed 2009 presidential election that returned Mahmoud Ahmadinejad to power. The election triggered mass demonstrations known as the Green Movement. Opposition groups claimed that the paramilitary Basij force, which operates under the Revolutionary Guard, was used to crack down on protesters. During the interview, Trump also urged Israeli President Isaac Herzog to grant a pardon to Netanyahu, who is currently facing corruption charges. Referring to the Israeli prime minister by his nickname “Bibi,” Trump said Netanyahu should be pardoned immediately so he could focus on the war rather than the ongoing legal case. He criticised Herzog for not granting the pardon. The air was classified as ‘unhealthy’, according to the AQI report of IQAir, a Swiss free real-time air quality monitoring platform. Pakistan’s Lahore topped the list, while Delhi, India, and Kathmandu, Nepal, ranked third and fourth with AQIs of 359 , 216 and 204 respectively. Dhaka ranks 9th among world’s most polluted cities According to the AQI scale, a reading between 50 and 100 is considered ‘moderate’, with generally acceptable air quality, though sensitive individuals should limit prolonged outdoor exertion. AQI levels of 101–150 are ‘unhealthy for sensitive groups’, 151–200 is ‘unhealthy’, 201–300 is ‘very unhealthy’, and readings above 301 are considered ‘hazardous’, posing severe health risks. The AQI, which reports daily air quality, informs residents how clean or polluted the air is and highlights potential health effects. In Bangladesh, the AQI is calculated based on five key pollutants: particulate matter (PM10 and PM2.5), nitrogen dioxide (NO2), carbon monoxide (CO), sulfur dioxide (SO2), and ozone. Dhaka has long struggled with air pollution. Air quality usually deteriorates in winter and improves during the monsoon season. The World Health Organization (WHO) estimates that air pollution causes about seven million deaths worldwide each year, primarily from stroke, heart disease, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, lung cancer, and acute respiratory infections.

Separately, the U.S. military said a seventh American service member has died from injuries sustained during an Iranian attack while stationed in Saudi Arabia. The previous six casualties were Army reservists killed in a March 1 strike on a port in Kuwait. U.S. intelligence officials also believe Russia has shared information with Iran to help target American troops and assets in the Middle East. In response, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said in an interview on Sunday that military cooperation between Tehran and Moscow “is not something new.” At the same time, growing evidence indicates that a deadly explosion at an Iranian elementary school on February 28 was likely caused by a U.S. airstrike. The incident resulted in the highest reported civilian death toll since the war began, drawing strong criticism from the United Nations and human rights organisations. The United States has not accepted responsibility but said it is looking into the allegations. The conflict has continued to take a heavy toll, with at least 1,230 people reported killed in Iran, more than 300 in Lebanon and around a dozen in Israel, according to officials in those countries.

A mobile court in Chougachha upazila in Jashore seized around 6,000 litres of illegally stored fuel and fined three traders a total of Tk 1.35 lakh during separate drives on Sunday afternoon. Executive Magistrate Shoaib Hasan of the Jessore district administration conducted the drive at Salua Bazar under Phulsara Union. During the drive, trader Nizam Uddin was fined Tk 1 lakh for illegally stockpiling a large quantity of fuel. BERC slashes furnace oil price by Tk 15.90 per litre Authorities seized 5,600 litres of diesel, 242 litres of petrol and 38 litres of octane from his warehouse. In the same market, another trader, Ruhul Amin, was fined Tk 15,000. Later around 4pm, another mobile court led by Chaugachha Assistant Commissioner (Land) and Executive Magistrate Reshma Khatun conducted a drive at Chougachha Filling Station in the town. The station’s manager, Golam Mostafa, 75, was fined Tk 20,000 under the Weights and Measures Standards Act. The action followed complaints from several motorcycle riders who reported mechanical problems after purchasing fuel from the station, alleging that the fuel might have been mixed with kerosene. According to court sources, police led by Officer-in-Charge Rezau l Islam of Chougachha Police Station recovered the illegally stored fuel following a tip-off and informed the upazila administration. Acting on instructions from the district administration, the executive magistrate later conducted the mobile court at the spot. A total of 28 barrels of diesel — each containing 200 litres — along with the petrol and octane were seized during the drive. Chougachh Upazila Nirbahi Officer Tanvir Ahmed said the seized fuel has been stored at Mina Filling Station and RS Filling Station. The fuel will be sold to consumers at fair prices and the proceeds will be deposited in the government treasury.

Oil prices jumped above $114 per barrel on Monday for the first time since 2022 as the escalating Iran war threatened energy production and shipping routes in the Middle East. Brent crude, the international benchmark, rose past $114 after trading resumed on the Chicago Mercantile Exchange, marking a 23% increase from Friday’s closing price of $92.69. U.S. benchmark West Texas Intermediate (WTI) was also trading near $114 per barrel, about 25% higher than its Friday close of $90.90. The surge came as the conflict’s impact widened. Bahrain accused Iran of striking a desalination plant vital to drinking water supplies, while Israeli overnight strikes set oil depots in Tehran on fire. Last week alone, U.S. crude prices rose 36% and Brent crude climbed 28% as the war, now in its second week, spread to areas critical for global oil and gas production and transport. About 15 million barrels of crude — roughly 20% of the world’s supply — typically pass daily through the Strait of Hormuz, according to Rystad Energy. However, threats of Iranian missile and drone attacks have largely halted tanker traffic through the strategic route. Major producers such as Iraq, Kuwait and the UAE have cut output as export disruptions filled storage tanks. Meanwhile, Iran, Israel and the United States have targeted energy facilities since the war began, raising fears of supply shortages. The price spike has unsettled financial markets, with Tokyo’s Nikkei 225 plunging more than 7% early Monday. In the United States, gasoline rose to $3.45 per gallon Sunday, about 47 cents higher than a week earlier, according to AAA. Analysts warn sustained prices above $100 per barrel could strain the global economy.

The government has undertaken a Tk 1,064.26 crore project to widen and upgrade  Rangamati (Manikchhari)–Mahalchhari–Khagrachhari Regional Highway in a bid to improve road safety, strengthen connectivity and boost economic activities in the Chattogram Hill Tracts. Roads and Highways Department (RHD) under the Road Transport and Highways Division will implement the project, titled “Widening and Upgradation of Rangamati (Manikchhari)–Mahalchhari–Khagrachhari Regional Highway (R-162).” A 3.6km road, 54 years of waiting in Lalmonirhat The entire cost will be financed by the government from its own funds and the work is expected to be completed by December, 2029. Officials said the 61.50-kilometre highway, which falls under the Rangamati Road Circle, connects key areas of Rangamati and Khagrachhari districts in Chattogram division. The project area includes Rangamati Sadar and Naniarchar upazilas in Rangamati district and Khagrachhari Sadar and Mahalchhari upazilas in Khagrachhari district. According to project documents, about 14.85 km of the road currently has a width of 5.50 metres, while the remaining 46.65 km is only 3.7 metres wide—far below the standard required for a regional highway. Road to Heaven: Gujarat’s surreal highway flanked by water and salt pans The 38.35 km stretch from Rangamati to Mahalchhari was originally constructed around 1986 under the Chengi Valley Project. Later, the 23.15 km section from Mahalchhari to Khagrachhari was developed by the Khagrachhari Road Division with government funding. Despite being classified as a regional highway, the road has not been upgraded to standard width and specifications, leading to frequent accidents and growing concerns among local residents and transport operators. Under the new project, major works will include earth filling, strengthening and widening of the existing pavement, raising pavement levels, and constructing approach roads. Bituminous binder and wearing courses will also be laid. Besides, rigid pavement and bus bays will be constructed at selected locations, while RCC retaining walls, brick masonry guide walls, concrete guide posts and guardrails will be installed to improve road safety. The project will also involve construction of new culverts, extension of existing culverts, installation of V drains and U drains, boundary walls, tree plantation and relocation of utility services. Officials said the improved highway would help establish a safer, more comfortable and time-efficient road network in the region. A Planning Commission official said the project would significantly upgrade the standard of the existing road infrastructure through widening and strengthening of the regional highway. “Once implemented, the project will help establish an improved, safe, comfortable and cost-effective road network in the region,” the official said. He added that the upgraded highway would facilitate faster transportation of locally produced goods to Chattogram port city and other parts of the country, reducing both travel time and transportation costs. The improved connectivity is also expected to create employment opportunities, accelerate socio-economic development in the hill districts and unlock greater potential for tourism in the Chattogram Hill Tracts. Stakeholders believe the project will play a crucial role in integrating the remote hill areas with the national road network and improving overall mobility in the region.

The Directorate of National Consumer Rights Protection (DNCRP) fined seven businesses a total of Tk 1.5 lakh during a drive against irregularities at several clothing and footwear shops in Kumarpara area of Sylhet city on Sunday. The drive was conducted from 1:30pm to 2:30pm. According to consumer rights officials, action was taken against several establishments, including Barton, Easy, Milan, Hidayah and Clubhouse, for using double price tags on products and failing to show valid documents for imported goods. Assistant Director of the Sylhet Divisional DNCRP office, Md Arif Mia, said the fines were imposed for various irregularities and illegal practices. After the drive, DNCRP Deputy Director Md Arif Murshed Mishu said similar operations would be carried out at other high-end clothing stores in the city in phases. Assistant Director of the Sylhet District DNCRP office Debananda Sinha and a team from RAB-9 also took part in the operation.

All classes and examinations at Dhaka University will remain suspended from today (Monday) until March 28, coinciding with the Eid holiday, following a directive from the Ministry of Education. The decision was taken at an emergency meeting of SMT on Sunday night, chaired by Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr. Niaz Ahmed Khan. During the meeting, members discussed a government notification and a letter from the University Grants Commission regarding the suspension of academic activities. According to the decision, university offices will remain open as usual on March 9. Authorities will announce later whether administrative activities and offices will continue operating after that date. Earlier on Sunday, a letter signed by Assistant Secretary of the Ministry of Education, Md. Sultan Ahmed, stated that in the current global situation, it is necessary to conserve electricity and fuel at the national level. Therefore, officials and employees of all public and private universities have been asked to ensure responsible behavior and take measures to save electricity and fuel. To implement the directive of the Cabinet Division and considering the month of Ramadan, all universities will remain closed from Monday until the date specified in the academic calendar for the Eid-ul-Fitr holiday. The directive also instructed universities to follow several energy-saving measures, including avoiding the use of electric lights during the daytime when sufficient natural light is available and keeping windows, doors, or blinds open to allow sunlight. Institutions have been asked to use only half of the existing lighting where possible and avoid unnecessary lights. Additionally, during office hours, unnecessary lights, fans, air conditioners, and other electrical appliances must be switched off. When using air conditioners, the temperature should be set at 25 degrees Celsius or higher. Officials have also been instructed to turn off lights, fans, air conditioners, and all electrical equipment before leaving their offices. The directive further states that unnecessary lighting in corridors, staircases, and washrooms should be avoided, energy-efficient equipment should be used, and all electrical appliances including lights, fans, computers, printers, scanners, and air conditioners must be switched off after office hours. Universities have also been advised to avoid decorative lighting, limit the use of vehicles, and ensure economical use of fuel.

The Rapid Action Battalion (RAB-2) on Sunday arrested two individuals with locally made weapons. The arrests were made in connection with the attack on former student coordinator Ibrahim Khalil and ongoing extortion activities in the Mayurvila area under Mohammadpur Police Station. The arrestees, top militants Ripon alias Kaua Ripon (28) and Mintu Ahmed alias Pappu (24), were taken into custody from Mohammadpur. Authorities recovered a machete, two daggers, and a ramda (curved knife) from them. RAB said the attack on Khalil, 29, occurred on February 22 when he was seriously injured with a sharp samurai sword by associates of top militant Sohel alias Garage Sohel, who had earlier been arrested along with weapons on March 1. Preliminary investigations indicate the suspects were involved in extortion, dominance establishment, and other criminal activities, spreading fear among local residents. The arrested militants face three separate cases in different police stations across Dhaka. The recovered weapons and arrestees have been handed over to the relevant police station for further legal action.

At least 104 Iranian personnel were killed and 32 wounded in a U.S. attack on an Iranian warship last week, Iran’s army said, according to Fars news agency. The warship, IRIS Dena, was torpedoed and sunk by a U.S. submarine in the Indian Ocean during the ongoing conflict, reports Al Jazeera. The United States is reportedly pressing Sri Lanka diplomatically over the handover of Iranian sailors who were rescued following the attack.  

Education Minister ANM Ehsanul Hoque Milon on Sunday underscored the importance of strengthening cooperation with international development partners, including the Asian Development Bank (ADB) and UNESCO, to enhance the overall quality of education in Bangladesh. The minister made the remarks during separate meetings at the ministry with ADB Country Director for Bangladesh Hae Yun Jeong and UNESCO’s representative in Bangladesh Dr Susan Vize. During the meeting with the ADB country director, the education minister highlighted various priority initiatives taken by the government to improve the education sector and appreciated ADB’s continued support in implementing development programmes. Milon said collaboration with international development partners would be further strengthened to accelerate reforms and development in the education sector. ADB Country Director Hae Yun Jeong reaffirmed the organisation’s commitment to continuing its support for Bangladesh’s education sector and expressed interest in assisting various development initiatives in line with the government’s priorities. The meeting also discussed issues related to improving the overall quality of education, developing educational infrastructure and expanding existing and future cooperation. Particular emphasis was placed on enhancing the quality of secondary education, strengthening technical and vocational education, and increasing research and technological capabilities in higher education. The role of digital education expansion and human resource development was also highlighted. In a separate meeting with UNESCO’s representative Dr Susan Vize, the minister stressed the need for closer cooperation to improve education quality, prevent student dropout and ensure inclusive and quality education for all. The discussions also covered issues related to protecting students’ mental health, enhancing teachers’ skills and ensuring the effectiveness of the education system. Milon said the government would review ongoing education projects not only in terms of financial expenditure but also to ensure their effectiveness and outcomes. The minister also emphasised making the country’s education system more employment-oriented through curriculum and programme reforms. The meeting further discussed reducing administrative complexities and bureaucratic delays in implementing education initiatives. The minister assured that if UNESCO requires cooperation in this regard, it can communicate directly with him to ensure prompt action.

The government is moving toward a sustainable, investment-driven economic model by encouraging entrepreneurs to raise capital from the stock market rather than relying solely on bank loans, said Rashed Al Mahmud Titumir, Advisor to the Ministry of Finance and Planning. Speaking as the chief guest at a seminar titled "Challenges and Actions for the New Government in the Capital Market," organized by the Capital Market Journalists' Forum (CMJF) at a city hotel on Sunday, the Advisor noted that the upcoming national budget will include specific steps for economic reform and transformation. Titumir emphasized that the previous "consumption-led" economic model was unsustainable. "We want to move from a debt-dependent economy to an ownership-based industrialization model. In the future, bank loans will not be available to everyone; we must decide who gets loans and who goes to the capital market," he stated. The Advisor revealed an ambitious goal to reach a $1 trillion economy by 2034, highlighting the need to upgrade the Bangladesh stock market from a "Frontier Market" to an "Emerging Market." Currently, the market capitalization-to-GDP ratio stands at only 12 percent, significantly lower than neighboring countries. Khondoker Rashed Maqsood, Chairman of the Bangladesh Securities and Exchange Commission (BSEC), reported that the commission has conducted 126 investigations, resulting in fines totaling Tk 1,488 crore. However, only Tk 5.23 crore has been realized so far due to legal challenges and the nine-month payment window. He also noted that 16 money laundering cases have been referred to the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) for the first time. To prevent the embezzlement of investor funds through fake bank statements, "Back Office Software" is being installed across 280 brokerage houses. National Board of Revenue (NBR) Chairman Abdur Rahman Khan stressed that tax incentives alone do not guarantee a healthy market. He pointed out that the current 7.5 percent tax gap between listed and non-listed companies is sufficient. "We must ensure that companies providing false information or those unable to pay dividends are not allowed to go public," he added. In the keynote paper, DBA Senior Vice President Moniruzzaman highlighted a major structural flaw: Bangladesh’s banks are currently providing both short-term and long-term financing, creating a risky asset-liability mismatch. He argued that a deep capital market is essential to relieve this pressure on the banking sector. The seminar, chaired by CMJF President Monir Hossain and moderated by General Secretary Ahsan Habib, was also attended by DSE Chairman Mominul Islam, CSE Chairman AKM Habibur Rahman, and other top financial stakeholders.

The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) has launched an investigation into alleged overseas money laundering involving former Managing Director of Dhaka WASA, Md. Abdus Salam Bepari. Special Police Super of the CID (Media) Jasim Uddin Khan said the investigation focuses on allegations that the removed Dhaka WASA chief illegally transferred large sums of money abroad. “The probe will examine possible financial transactions, bank accounts, and assets acquired abroad through illicit means,” he added. Initial findings indicate that Salam Bepari, who joined Dhaka WASA as an assistant engineer in 1991, allegedly laundered money earned from various sources and acquired significant movable and immovable assets in countries including Canada and the United States, in the names of himself, his wife, and associates. The investigation revealed that in 2018 he purchased a house in Toronto, Canada, under his name and that of his wife Mahbubunnesa. Information from the local land registration office shows the property’s current value is about Tk 20 crore. Various media reports also indicate that his family owns another house in Toronto.

State Minister for Foreign Affairs Shama Obaed Islam on Sunday said perpetrators of violence against women have no political identity, asserting that the government will ensure justice under existing laws regardless of the offender’s political affiliation. “Whenever the question of bringing a rapist to justice arises, there is often an attempt to attach a political identity to the accused. The BNP government believes that a rapist does not belong to any political party. He has only one identity—he is a criminal,” Shama Obaed said at a programme organised at the National Press Club marking International Women’s Day. She said the government remains committed to ensuring women’s empowerment and gender equality, adding that steps will be taken to expedite justice in cases related to gender-based violence, rape, abuse against women and trafficking of women and children. Pending rape cases in courts will also be resolved swiftly. The state minister said the government will continue its efforts to ensure protection for Rohingya women and children who have taken refuge in Bangladesh after facing persecution, until they can safely return to their homeland. Highlighting women’s representation in global diplomacy, she said women will be placed at the forefront in diplomatic forums, including those under the United Nations. “In workplaces, a woman often has to work twice as hard as a man to prove her competence. The government will do everything possible to ensure that women receive due recognition for their efforts.” Referring to the low participation of women in the media sector, Shama said women account for less than 10 percent of the country’s media workforce and remain underrepresented in decision-making positions. The government will soon start initiatives to ensure safety for women in the media and review the Cyber Security Act for journalists. The programme was chaired by National Press Club President Hasan Hafiz. Among others, Press Club General Secretary Ayub Bhuiyan, Management Committee Member Syed Abdal Ahmed and Sports Subcommittee Convener Shahnaz Begum Poly were present. At the event, veteran journalist Momtaz Bilkis Banu was honoured by the National Press Club for her contributions.

The Bangladesh Secretariat Reporters Forum (BSRF) has demanded a five-day holiday for newspapers and media personnel on the occasion of the upcoming Eid-ul-Fitr. BSRF President Masudul Hoque and General Secretary Ubaidullah Badal made the demand in a statement on Sunday. The statement said that government officials and employees will enjoy a long holiday this Eid, starting March 17 and continuing for seven days until March 23. However, only a three-day holiday is currently allocated for newspapers, which BSRF described as discriminatory. They also pointed out that newspaper hawkers will not sell papers during the Eid holiday. The forum urged the Newspaper Owners’ Association of Bangladesh (NOAB) to keep newspapers closed for five days during the festive period.  

Two people, a Bangladeshi and an Indian, were killed and 12 others injured in a missile strike in central Saudi Arabia, the country’s civil defence agency reported on X. Iran’s Revolutionary Guard said it targeted radar systems in locations including al-Kharj, where the deaths occurred, reports Al Jazeera. The attacks come amid ongoing Iranian strikes on Israel and U.S. military assets in Gulf states, following initial U.S.-Israeli operations on February 28 and the killing of Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. Drone attacks also targeted the U.S. embassy in Saudi Arabia and the U.S. consulate in the United Arab Emirates on Tuesday.

Country’s overall economic activity gained momentum in February, with the Purchasing Managers’ Index (PMI) rising to 55.7, indicating a faster pace of expansion compared with the previous month. The Bangladesh PMI February report, released on Sunday by the Metropolitan Chamber of Commerce and Industry (MCCI), Dhaka and Policy Exchange Bangladesh (PEB), showed the index increased by 1.8 points from January. The PMI is designed to provide timely insights into the country’s economic conditions to help businesses, investors and policymakers make informed decisions. The index was developed by MCCI and Policy Exchange Bangladesh with support from the UK Government and technical assistance from the Singapore Institute of Purchasing & Materials Management. According to the report, stronger growth in agriculture, manufacturing and services drove the overall expansion, while the construction sector returned to contraction during the month. The agriculture sector recorded its sixth consecutive month of expansion, with faster growth in new business and business activity. Input costs and order backlogs also returned to expansion, though employment in the sector continued to contract at a faster pace. Manufacturing maintained expansion for the 18th straight month, with growth accelerating in February. Key indicators including new orders, factory output, imports, input prices and supplier deliveries remained in expansion. However, new exports, finished goods and employment continued to contract, while order backlogs reverted to contraction. The construction sector slipped back into contraction after expanding in January. New business, employment and order backlogs declined, although construction activity and input costs showed expansion. Meanwhile, the services sector registered its 17th consecutive month of expansion, with faster growth across new business, business activity, employment, input costs and order backlogs. The future business index pointed to continued expansion across all major sectors—agriculture, manufacturing, construction and services—indicating positive business expectations in the coming months. Businesses surveyed in the report noted a degree of seasonal optimism ahead of Ramadan and Eid-ul-Fitr, which is expected to boost demand, particularly in services and retail. However, firms also highlighted persistent pressure from rising input costs, including raw materials, labour and utilities. Dr M Masrur Reaz, Chairman and CEO of Policy Exchange Bangladesh, said the February PMI suggests a modest increase in economic activity, supported by stronger demand in agriculture and services linked to Ramadan-related consumption. He also warned that escalating military tensions in the Middle East could pose downside risks to Bangladesh’s growth outlook. Despite the seasonal boost in demand, the report noted that broader growth prospects remain constrained by persistent inflationary pressure, sector-specific challenges and external economic risks.

US President Donald Trump on Sunday said Iran’s next supreme leader “is not going to last long” unless Tehran obtains Washington’s approval to replace the slain Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. Speaking to ABC News, Trump said, “He’s going to have to get approval from us. If he doesn’t get approval from us he’s not going to last long.” The remarks come as Iran’s clerical body responsible for selecting Khamenei’s successor reportedly completed voting and is expected to announce a name soon, reports Al Jazeera.  

Mike Waltz, U.S. ambassador to the United Nations, said the U.S.-led war on Iran is intended to eliminate a threat Tehran has posed to the Middle East for decades. Speaking on NBC’s Meet the Press, Waltz described the military progress over the past week as “truly extraordinary,” claiming Iran’s air force and air defenses have been largely destroyed and more than 40 Iranian navy ships have been sunk, reports Al Jazeera. He added that President Joe Biden and other U.S. officials are outlining the campaign as a measure to “protect the American people and eliminate this threat once and for all.”

Central Women’s Affairs Secretary of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami Nurunnisa Siddiqua on Sunday called for an overhaul of the justice system to stop abuse of women and demanded the formation of a speedy trial tribunal to tackle crimes against women and children. She made the remarks at a discussion meeting organized in Moghbazar, Dhaka, on the occasion of International Women’s Day. The discussion was presided over by Central Working Committee Member and Social Welfare Divisional Secretary Khandokar Ayesha Khatun. Central Working Committee Member and Talimul Quran Divisional Secretary Irani Akhter delivered the opening speech, while Advocate Sabikunnahar Munni, Law and Human Resources Divisional Secretary, presented the keynote speech. Central Executive Committee member Umme Khaleda Jahan and teacher Fatima Akhter Happy spoke as special guests. Dr. Nazneen Akhter, Head of the Physiology Department at Holy Family Medical College Hospital, and former councillor Amena Begum gave welcome speeches. Nurunnisa Siddiqua also criticized some feminist organizations, saying that when Muslim women wearing burqas face violence, these groups do not protest but pursue the agenda of a certain class of women. She urged all women to raise their voices unitedly on women’s issues. Advocate Sabikunnahar Munni emphasized that implementing the July Charter is essential to ensure balanced women’s empowerment. She highlighted rising violence against women across all sectors, including education, and blamed the immoral environment for perpetuating such abuse. Khandokar Ayesha Khatun said that awareness among women from all walks of life is vital to protecting women’s rights. Women from different sectors of the capital, including the central working committee, participated in the discussion. The program featured a recitation by Kazi Tabassum and concluded with a prayer led by Central Working Committee member Rozina Akhter. The program was moderated by Marjan Hira.

Oman’s Foreign Minister Badr bin Hamad Albusaidi on Sunday criticized recent military actions by the United States, Israel, and Iran, calling for restraint and a return to diplomacy. Afghanistan’s Defense Minister Mohammad Yaqoob Mujahid on Sunday said the country does not intend to escalate hostilities with Pakistan and favors resolving tensions through dialogue. In an interview with TOLOnews, Mujahid emphasized that Afghanistan has not provoked recent clashes but has been forced to respond to incursions. “Our message to the mediating countries is that we do not seek war and that we believe in negotiations,” he said. Military tensions between the two neighbors have risen in recent weeks, with both sides accusing each other of initiating violence.

As missiles and drones disrupt energy production in the Persian Gulf, analysts warn that water, not oil, may be the region’s most vulnerable resource. On Sunday, Bahrain accused Iran of damaging a desalination plant, while Tehran said a U.S. airstrike hit one of its facilities. Hundreds of desalination plants line the Gulf coast, supplying millions in cities across Kuwait, Oman, and Saudi Arabia—where up to 90% of drinking water comes from these systems. Without them, urban populations could not be sustained. Desalination plants, often paired with power stations, are vulnerable to attacks on energy infrastructure. Experts say any disruption—whether from missiles, drones, or cyberattacks—can cascade across interconnected systems. “Each of these critical plants is extremely vulnerable to sabotage or military action,” noted David Michel of the Center for Strategic and International Studies. The war, which began Feb. 28 with U.S. and Israeli strikes on Iran, has already brought conflict near key facilities. Iranian strikes hit Dubai’s Jebel Ali port near one of the city’s largest plants, while damage was reported at Kuwait’s Doha West facility and the UAE’s Fujairah F1 complex. The threat echoes past conflicts. During Iraq’s 1990-91 invasion of Kuwait, retreating forces sabotaged desalination and power plants, leaving the country largely without freshwater. Experts warn that ongoing war, combined with existing water shortages and fragile infrastructure, could trigger severe humanitarian crises across the Gulf.

The Iran war’s targets widened dangerously into civilian infrastructure Sunday as Bahrain accused Iran of striking one of the desalination plants that are crucial for Gulf nations’ drinking water. As Israeli-struck oil depots smoldered in Tehran after a late-night strike, prompting environmental warnings for citizens, Iran’s president vowed to expand attacks on U.S. targets across the region on the ninth day of the war. U.S. President Donald Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu have vowed to press ahead with the coordinated campaign, which has rippled across the region and appears to have no end in sight. Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian, in his latest threat, backtracked from conciliatory comments a day earlier in which he apologized for attacks on Gulf neighbors' soil. Iranian hard-liners had swiftly contradicted him, saying war strategy wouldn't change. In Lebanon, intensifying Israeli strikes targeting the Iran-backed militant group Hezbollah pushed the death toll higher as hundreds of thousands were displaced. In Israel, the military reported the first soldier deaths since the war began, saying two were killed in fighting in southern Lebanon. Three people were injured in Israel in an afternoon strike. The war, which Israel and the United States launched with airstrikes on Feb. 28 that killed Iran's supreme leader, has killed at least 1,230 people in Iran, at least 397 in Lebanon and at least 11 in Israel, according to officials. Six U.S. troops have been killed. The conflict has rattled global markets, disrupted air travel and left Iran’s leadership weakened by several thousand Israeli and U.S. airstrikes. Iran’s president toughens tone Pezeshkian said Iran's military response would only strengthen. “The more pressure they impose on us, the stronger our response will naturally be,” Pezeshkian said. “Our Iran, our country, will not bow easily in the face of bullying, oppression or aggression — and it never has.” A day earlier, Pezeshkian said Iran regretted regional concerns and urged neighboring states not to take part in U.S. and Israeli attacks. He accused the U.S. of trying to pit countries against one another. As multiple Gulf states continued to report intercepting incoming missiles and drones from Iran, Iranian hard-liners contradicted his remarks. “The geography of some countries in the region — both overtly and covertly — is in the hands of the enemy, and those points are used against our country in acts of aggression. Intense attacks on these targets will continue," judiciary chief Gholam Hossein Mohseni-Ejei wrote on X. Mohseni-Ejei and Pezeshkian are part of the three-member leadership council overseeing Iran since Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei was killed. As Iran awaits the selection of a new supreme leader, Trump and Netanyahu said their war aim remains the replacement of Iran’s leadership altogether. “We’re not looking to settle,” Trump told reporters Saturday. Desalination and oil facilities attacked The Gulf nations of Bahrain, Kuwait and the United Arab Emirates reported additional Iranian missiles launched toward them Sunday, including several that hit new categories of civilian infrastructure. The UAE said Iran launched more than 100 missiles and drones. Only four drones fell at unnamed locations, the defense ministry said. Bahrain accused Iran of indiscriminately attacking civilian targets and damaging one of its desalination plants, though its electricity and water authority said supplies remained online. Desalination plants supply water to millions of residents in the region and thousands of stranded travelers, raising new fears of catastrophic risks in parched desert nations. Home to the U.S. Navy’s Fifth Fleet, Bahrain also has seen hotels, ports and residential towers hit, with at least one person killed. The desalination plant strike came after Iran said a U.S. airstrike damaged an Iranian desalination plant. Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said the strike on Qeshm Island in the Strait of Hormuz had cut into the water supply to 30 villages. He warned that in doing so “the U.S. set this precedent, not Iran.” In response, CENTCOM spokesperson U.S. Navy Capt. Tim Hawkins said that "U.S. forces do not target civilians – period.” In Iran, authorities said Israel's overnight strikes on four oil storage tankers and a petroleum transfer terminal killed four people. Witnesses in Tehran said the smoke was so thick from a fire at the north Tehran oil depot that it looked as if the sun had not risen. Israel’s military said the oil depots were being used by Iran’s military for fuel to launch missiles. The Iranian Red Crescent Society said about 10,000 civilian structures across the country had been damaged, including homes, schools and almost three dozen health facilities. It also warned Tehran residents to take precautions against toxic air pollution and the risk of acid rain after Israel's strikes. Mohammad Bagher Qalibaf, the speaker of Iran’s parliament, said the war’s impact on the oil industry would continue to spiral, warning it soon could become harder to produce and sell oil. Some regional producers, including in Iraq, have curbed output amid dangers in the Strait of Hormuz. Iran maintains sufficient fuel, Veys Karami, managing director of the National Iranian Oil Products Distribution Company, told Iran’s state-run news agency. More strikes hit LebanonIsrael renewed its assault early Sunday on parts of Lebanon. Health Minister Rakan Nassereddine said 83 children and 82 women have been among those killed. Israel's military has ordered large swaths of the country to evacuate, and Lebanese officials said over 400,000 people have been displaced. In Beirut, sheltering families crammed into schools, slept in cars or in open areas near the Mediterranean Sea, where some burned firewood to keep warm. The government said it would open a sports stadium to shelter thousands more. Israel’s renewed offensive began last week after Hezbollah launched rockets toward northern Israel during the war's opening days. The subsequent strikes have been the most intense since a November 2024 ceasefire. Israel withdrew from most of southern Lebanon at that time but continued near-daily strikes, primarily in southern Lebanon, saying Hezbollah had been trying to rebuild its positions there. Hezbollah said last week that after more than a year of abiding by a ceasefire its patience has ended, leaving it with no option but to fight.

United States Ambassador to Bangladesh Brent T. Christensen held a meeting with the President of the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA), Mahmud Hasan Khan, to discuss bilateral trade, investment, and labor sector reforms.   The meeting, held on Sunday at the BGMEA Complex in Uttara, covered a wide range of issues, including US investment in Bangladesh's energy sector, economic cooperation, and labor-related matters.   The US delegation included Labor Attaché Leena Khan, Agricultural Attaché Erin Covert, Commercial Attaché Paul Frost, Political and Economic Officer Srini Sitaram, and Labor Expert Saifuzzaman Mehrab.   During the discussion, the BGMEA requested clarification on the mechanism for duty-free access for apparel made from US-sourced cotton. President Mahmud Hasan Khan noted that such an initiative would strengthen the relationship between the textile sectors of both nations. Ambassador Christensen responded that the Office of the United States Trade Representative (USTR) is currently working on the matter. He highlighted that the recent trade agreement is a positive step for Bangladesh, making it the first country to receive such a special opportunity, which is expected to boost US cotton exports to Bangladesh. BGMEA Senior Vice President Enamul Haque Khan raised concerns over business confusion caused by frequent tariff changes. The Ambassador explained that these adjustments were influenced by a recent US Supreme Court ruling, expressing optimism that the complexities would be resolved soon to restore stability. On the energy front, the BGMEA President emphasized the need for US investment to meet industrial demand. Moving away from a long-standing tradition, Bangladesh Bank (BB) has decided not to release special sets of new currency notes for the upcoming Eid-ul-Fitr. The central bank announced on Sunday that instead of focusing on specific festivals, new notes will now be supplied through commercial banks throughout the year based on regular demand. Arif Hossain Khan, Executive Director and Spokesperson of Bangladesh Bank, confirmed the policy shift on Sunday. “I have no information regarding the special issuance of new notes specifically for Eid. Bangladesh Bank is moving away from the conventional practice of distributing new notes before the festival. Instead, new notes will be supplied through banks year-round,” Khan said. He further clarified that there are currently no plans to release new notes for any specific festival or date. The move marks a significant departure from the usual rush at central bank counters and designated commercial bank branches, where citizens typically gather weeks before Eid to collect crisp notes for Salami or gift-giving. Earlier this year, the spokesperson had hinted that newly designed banknotes omitting the portrait of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman might be released by late April or early May. A similar situation occurred last year when the central bank announced the distribution of new notes during Ramadan, only to postpone it later. At the time, speculation arose that the distribution was halted due to objections regarding notes bearing the signature of then-Governor Abdur Rouf Talukder and the portrait of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. While the central bank has not provided an official explanation for why the specific timeline for the new designs was not met, the shift toward a year-round supply model is now the official stance of the regulatory body.

India’s West Bengal Police Special Task Force (STF) has arrested the prime accused and his alleged associate in the murder of Inqilab Moncho spokesperson Sharif Osman Bin Hadi from the border area of Bongaon in West Bengal. The arrestees were identified as Faisal Karim Masud, 37, a resident of Patuakhali, and Alamgir Hossain, 34, from Dhaka. According to Indian media reports quoting the STF, the arrests were made early Sunday following intelligence information that two Bangladeshi nationals involved in serious crimes, including murder and extortion, had fled Bangladesh and entered India illegally. During preliminary interrogation, it was revealed that Faisal Karim Masud, also known as Rahul, along with Alamgir Hossain, allegedly killed Osman Hadi, a political activist in Bangladesh, and later fled the country. They reportedly entered India illegally through the Meghalaya border and moved through different locations before reaching Bongaon in West Bengal with the intention of crossing back into Bangladesh. A case has been registered in India in this connection. The suspects were produced before a court on Sunday and remanded in police custody. Further investigation is underway. Hadi was shot on December 12 at Box Culvert Road under Paltan Model Police Station in Dhaka. He was initially taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital, later to Evercare Hospital, and eventually flown to Singapore. Hadi died on the night of December 18 while undergoing treatment at Singapore General Hospital. Following the incident, Abdullah Al Jaber,  Member Secretary of Inqilab Moncho, filed a case of attempted murder with Paltan Police Station on December 14, which was later converted into a murder case.

The government has amended the guidelines of the Independence Award, allowing an individual or institution to receive the country’s highest civilian honour again after a gap of at least 25 years if they make outstanding contributions in another field. The amendment was communicated in a letter sent by the Cabinet Division to the senior secretaries and secretaries of all ministries on Sunday. According to the revised provision of Article 7.11 of the Independence Award guidelines, a person or institution that has already received the award may be considered again if they make special contributions in a different field after at least 25 years. The letter noted that earlier the rule barred any individual or organisation who had received the Independence Award from being considered again for the same award or any other national-level award. Under the previous provision, Article 7.11 stated that no individual or organisation once honoured with the Independence Award would be eligible to receive the award again or any other national award. The issue resurfaced this year after the name of Dr Zafrullah Chowdhury was included for the posthumous Independence Award in 2026. He had earlier received the award in 1977. The matter drew attention as questions were raised over the possibility of receiving the honour for a second time. In 2026, a total of 20 recipients — 15 individuals and five organisations — are set to receive the Independence Award.

State Minister for Health and Family Welfare Dr. M.A. Muhit on Sunday said that initiatives will be taken to present the Tobacco Control Ordinance in the first session of Parliament to turn it into law. He said this pwhile delivering the keynote speech as the chief guest at a discussion meeting held at the CIRDAP International Conference Centre in the capital, marking International Women’s Day. The meeting was also attended by Tahsina Rushdir, Member of Parliament from Sylhet-2, Sheikh Momina Moni, Additional Secretary of the World Health Wing, and Professor Dr. Shah Ali Akbar Ashrafi, former Director of the Directorate General of Health Services, as special guests. Dr. M. A. Muhith further said, “The approved Tobacco Control Ordinance is an important step towards protecting public health. I am hopeful that the ordinance will be passed in the first session of Parliament and enacted into law.” The meeting highlighted that according to the Tobacco Atlas 2025 of the World Health Organization, approximately 21.3 million people aged 15 years and above in Bangladesh use tobacco. Each year, nearly 200,000 people die from tobacco-related diseases, which translates to an average of around 546 deaths every day. Meanwhile, the economic loss caused by tobacco amounts to nearly BDT 87,000 crore annually. In this context, the 'Smoking and Tobacco Products Usage (Control) (Amendment) Ordinance, 2025,' proposed by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, was approved in the Advisory Council meeting held on December 24, 2025. The approved ordinance includes provisions to ban the use of all types of tobacco products alongside smoking in public places and public transport; prohibit all forms of advertisement, promotion, and dissemination of tobacco products including displays at points of sale, via the internet, or any other medium; ban the sale of tobacco products within 100 meters of educational institutions; and increase the size of pictorial health warnings on tobacco packaging from the existing 50% to 75%, among other measures. MP Tahsina Rushdir said, “The harm caused by tobacco is not limited to individual health risks; it also has severe negative impacts on families, society, and the national economy. Referring to Tobacco Atlas 2025, she noted that more than 11 percent of women’s deaths in Bangladesh are caused by tobacco-related diseases.” She added that converting the approved ordinance into law would help protect future generations from the devastating health risks of tobacco. Professor Dr. Shah Ali Akbar Ashrafi said that, “the previous interim government’s approval of the tobacco control ordinance proposed by the Ministry of Health was undoubtedly a positive step. He added that, “the responsibility now lies with the newly elected government to convert the ordinance into law, especially since the ruling party had committed to this issue in its election manifesto.” The meeting was chaired by Shaheen Akhter Dolly, Executive Director of Nari Maitree. Among others present were Masuma Alam, President of Nari Maitree, along with representatives from the Anti-Tobacco Mothers’ Forum, Teachers’ Forum, Journalists’ Forum, Youth Forum, and various civil society organizations. All participants strongly demanded that the approved Tobacco Control Ordinance be converted into law in the very first session of Parliament.

Marking International Women’s Day 2026, Manusher Jonno Foundation (MJF) organized a town hall meeting titled “Her Voice. Her Rights” under the theme “Rights. Justice. Action. For All Women and Girls.” Shaheen Anam, Executive Director of MJF, said women have long demonstrated courage and leadership, yet still remain excluded from power, justice, and equal citizenship. She stressed that equal rights with dignity for all were central to the country’s struggle for independence, and that this promise remains unfinished. Wasiur Rahman Tonmoy, Lead, Youth Engagement & Social Cohesion at MJF, presented the context of the discussion, while Banasree Mitra Neogi, Director, Rights & Governance Programmes at MJF, emphasized that independence was also about rights, voice, and dignity, and that real equity must be ensured in everyday life. The discussion also featured Jinat Ara Haque, Chief Executive of WE Can Bangladesh; Advocate Susmita Chakma, Human Rights Activist from Rangamati; Dr. Ainoon Naher, Professor, Department of Anthropology, Jahangirnagar University; and Khandaker Jahurul Alam, Executive Director of CSID. Participants raised urgent concerns about child marriage, online gender-based violence, weak access to justice, exclusion from decision-making, low political participation of women, discrimination against transgender people, and the neglect and abuse faced by women with disabilities. Through this town hall, MJF reaffirmed that International Women’s Day must go beyond symbolism and lead to real action for the rights, safety, dignity, and inclusion of all women and girls. This initiative is supported by the Nagorikata: Civic Engagement Fund (CEF) Programme, funded by Switzerland, Canada and the European Union and managed by the GFA Consulting Group.

Two youths have been sentenced to five days’ simple imprisonment for threatening an on duty police member during a footpath eviction drive in Jatrabari area of the capital. The punishment was handed down by the Special Metropolitan Magistrate Court of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police. The convicts were identified as Md Tuhin, 24, and Md Arif, 30. According to police, the eviction drive was jointly conducted by Jatrabari Police Station and traffic police on Saturday along the Mawa incoming road and Shaheed Faruk Sarani in the Jatrabari area. During the drive to clear illegal footpath occupations, Tuhin and Arif allegedly made objectionable remarks about the on-duty police personnel and issued various threats, said DMP's DC (Media) Talebur Rahman on Sunday afternoon. Police immediately detained the two and produced them before the Special Metropolitan Magistrate Court, which later sentenced both to five days’ simple imprisonment each, the DC (Media) added. Authorities said such drives will continue to keep footpaths free from illegal vendors and maintain law and order in the area.

The Energy and Mineral Resources Division on Sunday requested the Cabinet Secretary to instruct deputy commissioners (DCs) across the country to conduct mobile courts to prevent illegal hoarding of fuel and sales at prices higher than the government-set rates. In a letter sent to the Cabinet Secretary, the division said media reports indicate that some unscrupulous traders are stockpiling fuel illegally in an attempt to create an artificial shortage in the market amid the ongoing crisis in the Middle East. Fuel reserves rise with arrival of two ships, rationing to continue: Minister To address the situation, the government has already fixed the amount of fuel that can be supplied based on the type of vehicle. Despite this measure, there have been reports of petrol pumps and filling stations selling fuel at prices higher than the government-approved rates, hoarding excess quantities for higher profits, selling fuel in the open market and engaging in smuggling. In this situation, the Energy and Mineral Resources Division requested the Cabinet Secretary to issue necessary instructions to deputy commissioners to conduct mobile courts to stop illegal hoarding of fuel, prevent sales above the fixed price, halt open market sales and curb smuggling.
