Police on Wednesday have seized Indian smuggled goods worth Tk 81.29 lacs n from beneath stones loaded on a truck in South Surma of Sylhet and arrested one person in connection with the incident. The arrest was made during a drive around 1:00 pm on the Dhaka–Sylhet highway in the Mominkhola Mushargaon area, according to Sylhet Metropolitan Police media cell. The arrestee was identified as Md Zakaria Islam (38), son of Md Khaza Mia and Nurunnahar Begum of Kharita area under Gobindaganj Police Station in Gaibandha district. Police said Zakaria was transporting around 100 cubic feet of stones in a Tata truck from the Sylhet–Dhaka highway. During a search, law enforcers recovered Indian smuggled goods hidden beneath the stones. The seized items included 1,026 pieces of Nivea body lotion, 554,400 pieces of diclofenac tablets, 20,304 pieces of cream and other cosmetic products, with a total estimated market value of Tk 81,29,640. A case has been filed against Zakaria under the Special Powers Act, and he has been produced before a court, said Additional Deputy Commissioner (Media) of Sylhet Metropolitan Police Mohammad Saiful Islam.

At least nine people, including a woman, were injured in a clash over a land dispute in Durgapur village, Shyamnai, Raiganj Upazila of Sirajganj. Two of the injured have been admitted to the hospital, confirmed OC of Salanga Police Station, Imam Jafar. The conflict revolves around a 30-decimal plot in Shyamnai Mauza, long contested between Ainul Master and Abdur Razzak Sheikh. On Wednesday afternoon, supporters of Abdur Razzak attempted to seize the disputed land by cutting its boundary. When Ainul Master’s group resisted, a scuffle broke out. Both sides clashed using traditional weapons, leaving nine people injured. Among the hospitalized are Ainul Master (61) and Harun Rashid (55). The OC said a formal complaint has been filed, and legal action will follow after investigation. Police have already inspected the scene.

Mohammad Arshadul Rouf, Additional Attorney General, will assume the responsibilities of the Attorney General on an additional charge. The Law and Justice Division of the Ministry of Law issued a notification on Thursday confirming his appointment. The notification, signed by Law and Justice Secretary Liakat Ali Molla, stated that the President has assigned Arshadul Rouf the additional duties of Bangladesh’s Attorney General. At the same time, the President has accepted the resignation of Md. Asaduzzaman, who had been serving as Attorney General. A separate notification was issued regarding his resignation. Asaduzzaman stepped down from the post following his nomination by the BNP for the Jhenaidah-1 constituency ahead of the 13th National Parliamentary Election.

Sanjay Chisim and Md. Faisal, arrested in connection with the murder of Sharif Osman Hadi, have given confessional statements. This is a different Faosal from the one who is the main accused in the murder, Faisal Karim. After a three-day remand, the two accused provided their statements before Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Jamshed Alam on Thursday. Following the confessions, the court sent Sanjay, Faisal, and Sibun Diuke to jail. Hadi was attacked on December 12 in Bijoynagar, Dhaka. The assailants, riding a motorcycle, shot at Hadi while he was in a moving rickshaw, hitting him in the head. He succumbed to his injuries seven days later, on December 18. Sanjay Chisim and Sibun Diuke were arrested on December 14 from the Nalitabari border in Sherpur, while Faisal was apprehended on December 16 by a RAB-11 team in Taruar Bill, Narsingdi Sadar, with firearms and ammunition recovered from water. So far, the police have arrested 12 individuals in connection with the case. The accused include Faisal’s father Md. Humayun Kabir, mother Mosa Hasi Begum, wife Saheda Parvin Samia, girlfriend Maria Akter Lima, brother-in-law Wahid Ahmed Sipu, hired private car businessman Mufti Md. Nuruzzaman Nomani (alias Uzzal), Faisal’s associate Md. Kabir, and those who assisted in fleeing to India—Sibun Diuke and Sanjay Chisim—along with Aminul Islam Raju and Md. Faisal.

The BNP on Thursday formed a 41-member election steering committee to run its campaign for the upcoming 13th Jatiya Sangsad election. According to a press release issued on Thursday night, BNP Standing Committee member Nazrul Islam Khan has been made the chairman of the committee, while Senior Joint Secretary General Advocate Ruhul Kabir Rizvi has been appointed as its member secretary. Begum Selima Rahman and Shamsuzzaman Dudu have been named as vice-chairmen of the committee. The party also appointed Md Ismail Jabiullah as the chief coordinator. The government has significantly reduced customs duty on mobile phone imports, cutting it from 25 percent to 10 percent, following a decision taken at a meeting of the Advisory Council on Thursday. The move represents a reduction of nearly 60 percent and is aimed at facilitating the full implementation of the National Equipment Identity Register (NEIR) while easing pressure on consumers and legitimate businesses. Under the new decision, customs duty for locally manufactured mobile handsets has also been lowered—from 10 percent to 5 percent—marking a 50 percent reduction. The government believes the measures will encourage both lawful imports and domestic production, ultimately bringing mobile phone prices down to a more affordable level for consumers, according to a press release issued from Posts, Telecommunication and ICT Ministry. Compared to other imported goods such as vehicles, electrical appliances and computers, the customs duty on mobile handsets has now been reduced to a notably lower level. In addition, mobile phones already imported by traders within the timeframe set by the Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC) will be allowed to be approved under the NEIR system as “stock-lot” items without any additional duty. This effectively regularises handsets currently available in the market and fulfils long-standing demands from legitimate importers and traders. Although there had been differing views within policymaking circles—particularly arguments that import duty reductions could undermine incentives for local manufacturing—the government ultimately decided to lower the duty by 60 percent in light of prevailing market realities. Officials acknowledged that the decision could result in a revenue shortfall of around Tk 35 crore in the current fiscal year. The decision comes amid heightened public concern following the killing of Osman Hadi, in which investigators reportedly recovered 17 active SIM cards linked to the accused. In this context, law enforcement agencies have strongly emphasised the need for strict implementation of NEIR and a reduction in the number of SIM cards permitted per individual. The government had earlier pledged that NEIR would only be enforced once import duties were rationalised. With Thursday’s cabinet decision, officials said that commitment has now been honoured and that the government is fully prepared to operationalise NEIR. Special provisions have been introduced for expatriates on humanitarian grounds. According to the decision, mobile phones used by expatriates will not be blocked for three months after their return to Bangladesh. Those staying in the country for less than three months will not be required to register their devices, while those remaining longer will need to complete registration after the grace period. Similarly, for general consumers, no mobile handset will be blocked over the next three months, while traders’ existing stock will be regularised. For this purpose, traders will only need to provide BTRC with a list of valid handset identification numbers. In this context, the government stated that all reasonable and legitimate demands have been accepted, duties have been reduced and even illegally imported phones have been given an opportunity to be brought under a lawful framework. However, authorities issued a stern warning against violence and vandalism. Those involved in attacks and destruction at the BTRC premises, officials said, are not above the law and will be identified and brought to justice through due legal process. At the same time, strict operations will be launched at all land ports and airports to prevent illegal importation of mobile phones. Officials stressed that NEIR is critical not only for digital security but also for ensuring a free and fair election environment. To prevent misuse of SIM cards, databases and the NEIR system, stringent protective provisions have been incorporated into the new Telecommunications Ordinance, with severe penalties for any abuse. The government also warned that if necessary, joint operations may be carried out at wholesale markets and customs houses across the country to seize illegally imported and sold mobile handsets. All concerned parties have been urged to comply with the law to avoid punitive action.

A discussion titled “Unyielding National Leader Begum Khaleda Zia: Life and Work” was held at Jahangirnagar University on Thursday (Jan 1) to commemorate BNP Chairperson and former Prime Minister Begum Khaleda Zia. Earlier in the morning, a condolence rally was organized by the Nationalist Teachers-Officials Forum in front of Begum Khaleda Zia Hall. The rally circled the campus and concluded at the Zahir Raihan Auditorium.  

The nomination scrutiny for the Shariatpur-1 (Palong–Jajira) parliamentary seat has concluded. Out of nine submitted nominations, six were declared valid, while three were disqualified, confirmed District Returning Officer and Deputy Commissioner Tahsina Begum on Thursday morning. The disqualified candidates include Nur Mohammad Mia of Bangladesh Supreme Party and two independents, Mohammad Golam Mostofa and Syed Nazrul Islam. They have the option to appeal the decision by January 9. Nur Mohammad Mia said his nomination was invalidated due to an old but active bank account listed in the papers, adding he will file an appeal. Independent candidate Syed Nazrul Islam noted a missing signature among the required 1% of voter endorsements caused his disqualification, though he had submitted more than necessary, and he plans to appeal as well. Tahsina Begum emphasized that six nominations were validated after following proper procedures, and the disqualified candidates can appeal within the stipulated timeframe.

Chittagong Port, the country’s premier seaport, has achieved a historic milestone in 2025, recording significant growth across all major operational indices, including container handling, cargo volume, vessel movement, and revenue collection. Despite global economic volatility and localized trade disruptions, the port successfully managed record-breaking volumes, signaling a robust recovery and expansion of Bangladesh's maritime trade. According to data released on Thursday by Omar Faruk, Director (Administration) of the Chittagong Port Authority, the port handled a record 3,409,069 TEUs (Twenty-foot Equivalent Units) of containers between January 1 to December 30, 2025. This represents a 4.7 percent growth compared to the previous year. The port's key performance indicators for 2025 include: Cargo Handling: 138.15 million metric tons, an 11.43 percent increase. Vessel Movement: 4,273 ships handled, a 10.50 percent growth. Revenue Income: Tk5,460.18 crore, a 7.55 percent increase over last year. Government Contribution: The port contributed Tk 1,804.47 crore to the national treasury. The growth has been attributed to the introduction of modern automation and infrastructure expansion. The port successfully implemented an Online E-Moot Pass system, online bill generation, and e-payment facilities. On December 23, 2025, the port set a single-day record by issuing 6,761 E-Moot passes. “Modern equipment integration, yard capacity expansion, and automation have been the primary drivers of this success,” said Omar Faruk. He also noted that for several days in 2025, the port achieved zero waiting time for arriving vessels. The record performance comes despite significant hurdles faced during the year. These included a two-day ‘complete shutdown’ at Chittagong Customs in June due to protests by the NBR Reform Unity Council, and transport strikes in October that led to a temporary backlog of nearly 46,000 containers. However, strategic operational management allowed the port to clear these bottlenecks rapidly. Currently, Chittagong Port holds the 68th position in the Lloyd’s List (a leading global source for maritime news, analysis, and data) of the world’s top 100 container ports. The port’s security measures also received positive recognition from the US Coast Guard, confirming its compliance with international maritime safety standards. Looking ahead, the ongoing construction of the Matarbari Deep Sea Port and the Bay Terminal Project (valued at over Tk13,525 crore) are expected to transform Chittagong port into a major regional transshipment hub.

A young woman died after falling from a train while trying to board it with the help of her husband at Rajshahi Railway Station on Thursday afternoon. The deceased was identified as Rupa Khatun, 23, wife of Md Anik and a resident of Tittorkuri village in Durgapur upazila of Rajshahi. Roni Saha, Sub-Inspector of Rajshahi Railway Police, informed that Anik works at a furniture company in Dhaka. On Thursday afternoon, the couple was boarding the Dhaka-bound Padma Express to travel to the capital. As the train started moving, Anik got on first and tried to pull his wife up by holding her hand. At one point, Rupa slipped from his grip and fell under the train. Anik also jumped off the moving train immediately. After the train left, Rupa was rescued in a critical condition and rushed to Rajshahi Medical College Hospital, where doctors declared her dead. 5 killed as sand-laden truck overturns in Rajshahi One of her legs was almost severed, and she also suffered serious injuries to her other leg and head. Barrister Rumin Farhana, a BNP leader recently expelled from the party, has said she has not left the party or her constituents, and pledged to carry out the struggle entrusted to her by party chairperson and late former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia until her last breath. Rumin offered prayers for Khaleda Zia during a discussion meeting with local residents on Thursday afternoon at Ward No. 1 of Shahbazpur in Sarail upazila of Brahmanbaria. Addressing the gathering, she said, “The dismissal order came against me before the leader’s burial. If any injustice has been done to me, I leave the matter to Allah for judgment.” She added, “In 1973, my father was defeated. I will ensure that history does not repeat itself. I have no party now, but you are here. Once the votes are counted, we will return home with the results.” Rumin Farhana will contest the 13th Jatiya Sangsad elections from Brahmanbaria-2, covering Sarail, Ashuganj, and two unions of Bijoynagar. She is seeking the election symbol of a duck, which she said she has liked since childhood and is also favored by her supporters. BNP expelled Rumin Farhana and three others for filing nominations in defiance of party directives. A press release signed by senior joint secretary Ruhul Kabir Rizvi stated that the action was taken for violating party decisions and conducting organizational activities independently. The BNP nomination for Brahmanbaria-2 went to Maulana Junaid Al Habib, central co-vice president of Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam, under the alliance. Rumin’s submission of her nomination prompted the party’s disciplinary action.

The year 2025 ended with an upward trend in remittances sent by expatriate Bangladeshis, with Bangladesh receiving over $3.22 billion in December. Bangladesh received $16.26 billion in inward remittances in six months from July to December in the current fiscal year, FY 2025-26. Forex reserves hit 3-year high as December remittances cross $3bn According to the latest update from Bangladesh Bank, the $ 3.22 billion remittance in December is an increase of 22.3 percent compared to the same period last year. In December of the previous year (2024), the country received around $ 2.63 billion in December.

A group of 101 leading Islamic scholars in Bangladesh has stated that the recently formed Jamaat-led political alliance cannot be recognized as an Islamic bloc. The statement, issued through Dawatul Ihsan Bangladesh, emphasized that faith and creed take precedence over electoral agreements, and alliances formed solely for political purposes cannot represent true Islamic unity. The scholars warned that labeling the coalition as “Islamic” misleads ordinary Muslims and weakens doctrinal clarity. They stressed that parties or groups whose ideology contradicts Sunni beliefs, the principles of the Prophet, and the example of his companions cannot form a legitimate Islamic alliance. Any compromise on matters of faith, they said, undermines the fundamentals of Islam and misguides the public. The statement outlined three key principles of Islamic political conduct. First, the inclusion of “Islam” or “Islamic” in a party’s name does not automatically make it an Islamic political group. True Islamic politics must adhere to Sunni creed, follow the Quran and Sunnah, and maintain distance from all anti-religious compromises. Second, parties committed to Sunni teachings cannot ally with groups that promote ideas contrary to the faith. Third, Islamic politics is not a mere strategy for power; it should safeguard religion, uphold Shariah values, counter un-Islamic ideologies, and protect the faith of the community. Signatories include leading scholars from across Bangladesh, such as Allama Shah Muhibbullah Babunagari, Allama Khalil Ahmad Quraishi, Allama Abdul Hamid Pir, Allama Ziauddin, Mufti Rashidur Rahman Faruk, Allama Nurul Islam Khan, and many others. The scholars urged religious organizations, fellow scholars, and the Muslim community to remain alert, avoid confusion, and not recognize the Jamaat-led bloc as an Islamic political alliance, reaffirming the importance of doctrinal clarity and faith-based politics in Bangladesh.

A child was killed and at least 15 passengers were injured when a passenger bus lost control and overturned into a roadside ditch in Dinajpur on Thursday evening. The accident occurred in the Bhushirbandar area as an MK Paribahan bus was heading to Rangpur from Dinajpur with passengers on board. Highway Police in-charge Mahbub Kabir said the driver lost control of the bus while trying to avoid a collision with a motorcycle. The bus then veered off the road and overturned into a ditch. Fire Service and Civil Defence personnel rushed to the spot and rescued the injured. 2 women killed as bus hits auto-rickshaw in Dinajpur Four people, including a child, were taken to Dinajpur Medical College Hospital in critical condition. The child died on the way to the hospital, police confirmed. Other injured passengers received primary treatment at nearby facilities.

Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami on Thursday said that remarks made by Professor Latifur Rahman regarding the Awami League at a courtyard meeting in Chapainawabganj were entirely his personal views and do not reflect the party’s position. The clarification came in a statement issued by Jamaat’s Assistant Secretary General and Head of its Central Publicity and Media Department, Advocate Ahsanul Mahboob Zubair. In the statement, Jamaat said it has taken note of comments made by former lawmaker of Chapainawabganj-3 Professor Latifur Rahman at a courtyard meeting held on December 30 in Charbagdanga Union of Chapainawabganj Sadar upazila. “Remarks attributed to the Awami League made by Professor Latifur Rahman at the meeting represent his personal opinion. Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami does not agree with those remarks, nor do they reflect the party’s viewpoint,” the statement said. It added that Latifur Rahman has been cautioned by the party regarding the matter. Notably, during the meeting, Professor Latifur Rahman, also a central committee member of Jamaat, was heard saying, “Those who join Jamaat from the Awami League, we will take responsibility for your legal matters, courts and police stations.” Videos of the remarks have since gone viral on social media. In one video, Latifur Rahman is heard saying that a change is coming in Bangladesh and encouraging Awami League supporters to join Jamaat, assuring them of protection regarding legal and administrative matters.

Chief Adviser Prof Muhammad Yunus has said Bangladesh is fully prepared to hold 'free, fair, and peaceful' elections on February 12 next year. Prof Yunus said that around 700,000 Bangladeshis living and working abroad have registered for postal ballots after the interim government introduced the system for the first time in the country’s history. The upcoming national election featured prominently in the discussions with the foreign dignitaries that visited Bangladesh on Wednesday and Thursday to join former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia's funeral ceremony and pay last respects to her. High-level delegations from across South Asia attended the funeral in Dhaka, including Speaker of the Pakistan National Assembly Sardar Ayaz Sadiq; India’s External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar; Nepal’s Foreign Minister Bala Nanda Sharma; Sri Lanka’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Employment and Tourism Vijitha Herath; and Maldives Minister of Higher Education and Labour Ali Haider Ahmed. Later, the Pakistan parliamentary speaker and ministers from Nepal, Sri Lanka, and the Maldives paid courtesy calls on the Chief Adviser at the State Guest House Jamuna. Prof Yunus told the Pakistan parliamentary speaker Sardar Ayaz Sadiq that he would return to his previous professional role after the elections. During the meetings, the Sri Lankan and Nepalese foreign ministers said they were closely following Bangladesh’s introduction of postal voting for its large expatriate population. “We will learn from your experiences,” Sri Lankan Foreign Minister Vijitha Herath said. During the meetings, Prof Yunus repeatedly emphasized the need to revive the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC). “We witnessed a true SAARC spirit at the funeral yesterday. SAARC is still alive. The SAARC spirit is still alive,” he said during his meeting with Maldives Minister Ali Haider Ahmed. “The SAARC was in action yesterday. We shared our grief and sorrow together,” he told Sri Lankan Foreign Minister Vijitha Herath. Prof Yunus also recalled his attempt to convene an informal gathering of SAARC leaders on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly in New York. “I wanted to hold a get-together among SAARC leaders, even if only for five minutes,” he said, expressing hope that SAARC would be revitalised as a meaningful platform for nearly two billion people in South Asia. SAARC spirit alive, it needs to be revived: Prof Yunus Prof Yunus on Thursday said that “the SAARC spirit is alive and well,” citing the strong presence and solidarity shown by South Asian nations at the funeral of former Prime Minister and BNP Chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia. He said he was deeply moved by the respect demonstrated by SAARC member states for the three-time Prime Minister of Bangladesh and the world’s second female Muslim head of government. The visiting dignitaries paid glowing tributes to the late Begum Khaleda Zia, recalling her lifelong struggle for democracy and her efforts to promote unity and cooperation among South Asian nations. They said they were overwhelmed by the record-breaking turnout at the funeral. “It shows how much people truly loved her,” Prof Yunus said.    

Representatives of the Dhaka University Central Students’ Union (DUCSU) on Thursday met BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman to discuss safeguarding the spirit of the July Revolution and shaping the future of student politics in Bangladesh. The meeting took place at the BNP Chairperson’s political office in Gulshan. Before meeting Tarique Rahman, the DUCSU delegation signed the condolence book for late former Prime Minister and BNP Chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia. Talking to reporters after the meeting, DUCSU Vice President Abu Shadik Kayem said they offered prayers for Khaleda Zia, hoping Allah grants her the highest place in Jannatul Firdaus. He said Tarique Rahman provided guidance on student participation in politics and the broader democratic movement, emphasising the importance of unity among forces committed to anti-fascist struggles following the July Revolution. Shadik said the BNP Acting Chairman stressed cooperation among all political and student organisations, including BNP, Jamaat, NCP, Chhatra Dal, and Chhatra Shibir, to rebuild the country. He said the youth must work together to ensure free, fair, and credible elections, restore state institutions weakened over the past 16 years, and implement the ‘July Charter’. The meeting also addressed the killing of martyr Sharif Osman Hadi, with Shadik alleging that those involved in planning and executing the murder have not yet been arrested and that some still hold positions within the interim government. He called for swift legal action against the perpetrators. Shadik said the discussion reaffirmed a commitment to ‘Bangladesh-oriented’ politics and resistance to external domination, reflecting the ideals of Khaleda Zia and late President Ziaur Rahman. Jamaat, BNP should work together for next five years: Ameer He stated that young people have been deprived of their voting rights for the past 16 years and urged the student community to play a united role in restoring democracy through free, fair, and credible elections. The DUCSU leader also encouraged the youth to take an active part in rebuilding weakened state institutions and implementing the ‘July Charter’, including steps such as holding a national referendum.

Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer Dr Shafiqur Rahman on Thursday said Jamaat and the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) should work together for the next five years to restore a congenial environment in the interest of national stability. “We have said that for the sake of our much-loved country, we worked together in the past and, InshaAllah, we will work together in the future as well. Bangladesh’s stock markets started the first trading day of 2026 on a bullish note as indices rose on both the Dhaka and Chattogram bourses on Thursday, with most listed companies posting gains. At the Dhaka Stock Exchange (DSE), the benchmark DSEX index advanced by 45 points. The Shariah-based DSES gained 5 points, while the blue-chip DS30 index climbed 15 points. Share prices increased for a majority of companies, as 263 issues advanced against 66 decliners, while prices of 62 issues remained unchanged. The turnover also improved, with shares and units worth Tk 368 crore changing hands during the session, compared to Tk 354 crore in the previous trading day. In the block market, shares of 15 companies worth Tk 19 crore were traded, with Orion Infusion topping the list by trading shares worth Tk 4.94 crore. Apex Spinning & Knitting Mills Limited topped the DSE gainers’ chart with a price surge of over 8 percent, while Aramit Limited was the worst loser, shedding nearly 7 percent. The Chittagong Stock Exchange (CSE) also ended higher, with its all-share index CASPI rising by 81 points. Stocks advance at DSE, CSE in early trading At the port city bourse, prices of 93 companies rose against 38 that fell, while 12 issues closed unchanged. A fire at a bar in the Swiss ski resort of Crans-Montana in the early hours of New Year’s Day has left dozens presumed dead and around 100 injured, authorities said. The tragedy is the latest in a long history of deadly fires at nightclubs, bars, and music venues worldwide. Recent years have seen devastating incidents, including a December 2025 fire at a Goa nightclub in India that killed 25, a March 2025 blaze at Pulse Club in North Macedonia that claimed 63 lives, and a 2024 fire at Istanbul’s Masquerade nightclub that killed 29 workers during renovations. Past tragedies include the 2015 Colectiv nightclub fire in Romania (64 dead), the 2013 Kiss nightclub fire in Brazil (over 200 dead), and the 2000 Luoyang disco fire in China (309 dead). Many fires were triggered by indoor fireworks, flammable materials, or arson, often compounded by overcrowding and insufficient exits. Some of the deadliest fires in history include the 1942 Cocoanut Grove fire in Boston, which killed 492, and the 1977 Beverly Hills Supper Club fire in Kentucky, which claimed 165 lives. Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer Dr Shafiqur Rahman met BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman on Thursday evening and expressed  condolences over the death of his mother and former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia. The Jamaat chief came to the BNP Chairperson’s Gulshan office around 7:00pm, a day after Khaleda Zia’s burial. He first signed the condolence book opened at the office following her death, BNP Media Cell member Sayrul Kabir Khan said. Later, he met Tarique Rahman at his chamber in the presence of BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir and Standing Committee members Nazrul Islam Khan, Salahuddin Ahmed and AZM Zahid Hossain. During the meeting, the Jamaat chief held a brief discussion with Tarique Rahman and conveyed his sympathy to the bereaved family. The nonsensical phrase “6-7” has been named the most overused and misused word of 2025, according to Lake Superior State University’s 50th annual Banished Words List. The tongue-in-cheek list, compiled from around 1,400 submissions from across the United States and several countries including Uzbekistan, Brazil and Japan, highlights words and phrases deemed “cooked” or overhyped. “6-7,” which gained popularity on social media this year, especially among Gen Z, is considered largely meaningless. Dictionary.com even selected it as its 2025 word of the year. Each number can be read as “six, seven,” or combined as 67, sometimes sparking reactions at college basketball games. Other words on the top 10 include “demure,” “incentivize,” “perfect,” “gift/gifted,” “my bad” and “reach out,” with some having appeared on past lists. David Travis, president of Lake Superior State University, said the list reflects changing trends and the influence of social media, noting that words shared via texting or posts can easily be misunderstood without tone or context. While some terms like “my bad” have lasting appeal, Travis predicted “6-7” will likely fade next year. Gen Z users, however, continue to embrace it as a playful, if puzzling, expression.

A United Nations humanitarian team has visited Sudan’s el-Fasher city for the first time since it was seized by the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) in October, finding hundreds of civilians living in desperate conditions amid severe shortages of food, medicine and shelter. The hours-long visit, conducted on Friday, marked the UN’s first direct assessment of the city after months of isolation. UN officials said el-Fasher remains under RSF control and largely cut off from the outside world following a prolonged siege. “It was a tense mission,” said Denise Brown, the UN’s humanitarian coordinator for Sudan, describing the city as a “massive crime scene.” The exact death toll from the takeover remains unknown, though survivors who fled reported widespread killings, with satellite images suggesting mass graves and burned bodies. The UN team found civilians sheltering in abandoned buildings or makeshift structures made from plastic sheets and blankets, without access to clean water, toilets or basic services. Food was scarce and expensive, with the price of rice reportedly reaching up to $100 per kilogram. Medical services were described as nearly non-functional, with hospitals lacking supplies and staff. Aid groups said villages surrounding el-Fasher appeared largely deserted, while many injured people may still need evacuation. Russian-installed authorities in Ukraine’s occupied Kherson region said on Thursday that a Ukrainian drone strike killed at least 24 people and injured more than 50 others during New Year celebrations, amid rising tensions despite ongoing peace efforts. According to Vladimir Saldo, the Moscow-appointed head of the region, three drones struck a café and hotel in the coastal resort town of Khorly on the Black Sea. He said one of the drones carried an incendiary substance, causing a fire. The claim could not be independently verified, and Ukrainian officials did not immediately comment. Senior Russian officials condemned the alleged attack. Federation Council chair Valentina Matviyenko said the strike reinforced Moscow’s determination to pursue its objectives in the nearly four-year war. The statement comes as Russia accused Ukraine of launching a separate drone attack targeting one of President Vladimir Putin’s official residences earlier this week, a claim Kyiv dismissed as false and aimed at disrupting peace talks. Nagad, the digital financial service of the Bangladesh Postal Department, has recorded the highest annual transaction volume in its history, with total transactions reaching nearly Tk 3,80,000 crore in 2025, up from around Tk 3,30,000 crore in 2024. Nagad customers performed transactions amounting to Tk 35,530 crore in December alone, which is also the highest monthly transaction volume ever experienced by this mobile money carrier, said a press release issued on Thursday.  Over the course of 2025, Nagad achieved such a monthly transaction milestone thrice. Regarding the latest remarkable achievement, Nagad authorities extended their gratitude to the large family of several crore registered users. Talking about this new milestone, Nagad Administrator, Md Motasem Billah congratulated all customers, employees, distributors, agents and everyone associated with this MFS operator. “Nagad has always tried to do something for its customers. BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Thursday said their party will gain strength from the public’s love after Khaleda Zia’s death and secure victory for the pro-Bangladesh force in the next election. “The love among the people and the emotion created after the demise of Madam (Khaleda) will undoubtedly make the Bangladesh Nationalist Party even stronger,” he said. Talking to reporters in front of the BNP Chairperson’s Gulshan office, Fakhrul said Khaleda’s passing at this critical time, when her guidance was most needed, has deeply saddened people. “That is why they gathered at her namaz-e-janaza, shed tears and prayed for the salvation of her soul. They also left with a strong resolve to fulfil their duty to establish democracy and ensure that the next election is free, fair and neutral. I believe they will make BNP—the force that stands for this country—victorious,” he said. Fakhrul also said people even joined Khaleda Zia’s janaza from the rooftops of nearby buildings, reflecting the depth of public affection for the late leader, whom he described as a rare figure in Bangladesh’s politics. “She never compromised on her principles, never compromised on the country’s independence and sovereignty, and spent her entire life struggling to establish democracy. She endured imprisonment and hardship, and although she remained ill until her final days, she never left the country. This deep love for the nation, the soil and the people moved everyone,” he said. Replying to a question, Fakhrul said Khaleda Zia left behind a strong political legacy. Gas supply will remain under low pressure in 15 areas of the capital for 10 hours on Friday due to emergency repair work, Titas Gas Transmission and Distribution PLC said on Thursday. In a media release, Titas said the low-pressure situation will persist from 10:00am to 8:00pm in the affected areas. The disruption is due to emergency repairs on a 580-foot section of pipeline near Manikdi, which connects the Demra City Gate Station (CGS) with the Tejgaon Town Border Station (TBS). The pipeline has recently become exposed, necessitating urgent maintenance. As a result, gas supply will remain under low pressure in Dhaka Cantonment, Gulshan, Banani, Tejgaon, Nandipara, Bashabo, Khilgaon and Banasree during the period. Low gas pressure expected in Titas areas for 18 hours Besides, consumers of all categories in areas from Rampura Bridge to Malibagh Chowdhury Para, as well as Mugda, Manda, Dhalpur of Maniknagar, Shahjahanpur and Gopibagh, will face similar low-pressure conditions, the release said. Titas Gas authorities expressed regret for the temporary inconvenience caused to consumers.

Former US special counsel Jack Smith has said the January 6, 2021, attack on the US Capitol would not have happened without Donald Trump, characterizing the Republican president as the “most culpable and most responsible person” in the criminal conspiracy to overturn the results of the 2020 election. A transcript and video of Smith’s closed-door deposition were released on Wednesday by the Republican-controlled House Judiciary Committee. During the testimony, Smith defended the basis of his investigations and rejected claims that they were politically motivated. Smith said the evidence showed that Trump fuelled false claims of election fraud, summoned supporters to Washington and directed them toward the Capitol. He added that once violence broke out, Trump failed to act promptly to stop it and instead made statements that further escalated the situation and endangered then Vice President Mike Pence. Trump had been indicted for conspiring to overturn the 2020 election and for illegally retaining classified documents at his Florida residence. However, both cases were abandoned after Trump won the 2024 presidential election, in line with US Justice Department policy barring prosecution of a sitting president. Smith said the January 6 case relied heavily on testimony from Republican allies who acknowledged the illegality of the actions and chose loyalty to the Constitution over party interests.

Prof Dr Md Sayedur Rahman has been reappointed as the Special Assistant to the Chief Adviser with the rank of State Minister, just a day   after his resignation. The Cabinet Division issued a notification in this regard on Thursday, granting him the post with executive powers of the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare under Rules of Business, 1996. Health Ministry sources said Md Sayedur Rahman is a Professor at Bangladesh Medical University. He went on post-retirement leave (PRL) on December 30 and to secure retirement benefits, he had resigned from the position of Special Assistant. After retirement, he was reappointed to the same position. The notification also stated that while holding the position of Special Assistant he will receive the salary, allowances, and other benefits of a State Minister.

A 21-year-old volunteer in Iran’s paramilitary Revolutionary Guard was killed Wednesday night in Lorestan province during protests driven by economic hardship, authorities said Thursday, marking the first reported security force fatality in the demonstrations. State-run media said the Basij volunteer was “martyred … at the hands of rioters” while defending public order in the city of Kouhdasht, about 400 kilometers southwest of Tehran. Another 13 Basij members and police officers were injured. Local officials linked the protests to inflation, currency depreciation, and rising economic pressures, urging citizens to voice concerns without letting “profit-seeking individuals” exploit the unrest. The demonstrations, the largest in Iran since 2022, have slowed in Tehran but spread to other provinces. Khan Muhammad Mursalin, joint chief coordinator of the National Citizen Party (NCP), resigned from the party on Thursday, citing ideological differences and disillusionment over its political direction. Mursalin announced the decision in a Facebook post in the afternoon, saying he had stepped down from all posts and responsibilities of the NCP with immediate effect. “I am Khan Muhammad Mursalin. After serving as the central joint chief coordinator of the National Citizen Party, I have decided to resign from all positions and responsibilities of the NCP from today,” he wrote. He, however, made it clear that he is not quitting politics. “I am resigning from the NCP, not from politics. We will meet again on the streets”. In a subsequent video message, Mursalin said he joined the NCP after the 2024 mass uprising as the party spoke of the need for a new political order, a new constitution and a break from the colonial legacy—aspirations he felt aligned with his own struggle. “I considered them my fellow travellers and comrades. That hope and aspiration led me to join the NCP,” he said, alleging that the party later failed to empower the core forces of the uprising, particularly working class people who, according to him, made the greatest sacrifices. “The workers who gave the most lives in the uprising could not be brought to the centre of power, nor could they be built up as a political constituency,” Mursalin claimed. He further alleged that women—mothers and sisters who marched with the bodies of their brothers—have since become the most marginalised and were deliberately pushed out of the spotlight. Mursalin said the NCP has failed to fulfil the aspirations of students and the masses that emerged from the uprising. “The current path of the NCP and the path of our mass political movement have now diverged in two different directions.” Following the NCP’s decision to join an alliance with Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami and like-minded parties, around 10 leaders and activists have reportedly resigned from the party so far due to ideological disagreements. Among them are central leaders Tasnim Jara and Tajnuva Jabeen. Mahfuj Alam rules out joining NCP over Jamaat alliance Several others, though not resigning, have withdrawn from electoral politics. Monira Sharmin has announced she will not contest the election, while NCP leader Nusrat Tabassum said she will remain inactive during the election period. Meanwhile, the NCP leadership has said the alliance with Jamaat-e-Islami was formed to ensure broader unity ahead of the 13th national election and a proposed referendum. Party leaders said the move is an electoral arrangement, not an ideological compromise.

The metro rail accident that killed a pedestrian on October 26 was caused by a faulty design and the use of substandard bearing pads, Road Transport and Bridges Ministry Adviser Fouzul Kabir Khan said on Thursday. Speaking at a press briefing at the Secretariat after receiving the probe committee’s report, the adviser said the investigation found no evidence of sabotage. He said preliminary findings showed that the hardness, compression set and neoprene content of the displaced bearing pad did not meet standard specifications, although further testing at overseas laboratories is required for confirmation. The bearing pad was also installed at a slight slope of 0.8 percent, which may have contributed to its displacement, the adviser added. The committee found that no transition curve was used between the straight and curved sections of the viaduct, pointing to a possible design flaw. No separate model or analysis was conducted for the curved alignment, as the design relied solely on analysis of the straight section. Investigators also noted that while a mass-spring neoprene damper system is used under tracks at curved alignments and nearby stations, rigid tracks were installed at the accident site. The committee believes the damper system could have reduced vibrations. Outlining the recommendations, the adviser said urgent technical measures must be taken at curved alignments to protect bearing pads. The committee also called for a detailed review of the viaduct and track design by an independent third-party consultant, along with a comprehensive safety audit of the metro rail project, Fouzul Kabir said. It further recommended establishing a robust structural health monitoring system, strengthening the metro rail authority’s technical capacity, and ensuring effective technology transfer from foreign consultants to local experts. Dozens of people are presumed dead and around 100 others injured, most seriously, after a fire broke out at Le Constellation bar in the Swiss Alps resort town of Crans-Montana during New Year celebrations, police said Thursday. Valais Canton police commander Frédéric Gisler said the exact number of victims is still being confirmed and authorities are working to identify the dead and notify families. Attorney General Beatrice Pilloud said the cause of the fire is not yet known, and officials have ruled out any attack. Witnesses described a lit candle in a bottle igniting the wooden ceiling, causing flames to spread rapidly. People panicked, smashing windows and rushing up narrow stairs to escape. Emergency teams rushed helicopters and ambulances to the scene, and the local hospital’s intensive care unit quickly reached full capacity. Crans-Montana, a major winter sports destination in Switzerland’s Alps, is hosting thousands of tourists for skiing and upcoming World Cup and Olympic events. Swiss President Guy Parmelin expressed condolences and delayed his New Year address out of respect for the victims.

The Afghanistan Cricket Board (ACB) announced a 15-member squad for the upcoming T20 World Cup taking place in India and Sri Lanka this year. Palestinians in the Israeli-occupied West Bank watched as Israeli military bulldozers tore down their homes Wednesday in Nur Shams refugee camp, part of an almost year-long campaign in northern West Bank camps. Since early 2025, Operation "Iron Wall" has damaged or destroyed at least 850 structures across Nur Shams, Jenin, and Tulkarem, according to satellite analysis by Human Rights Watch. The demolitions have forced tens of thousands from their homes, resulting in the largest displacement in the West Bank since Israel captured the territory in 1967. Many now live with relatives, in rented apartments, or in public buildings. Israel says the operation targets armed groups, claiming the demolitions remove militant infrastructure and clear routes for troops. Residents said they were given time to remove belongings, but the loss is devastating. Motaz Mohor, whose home was destroyed, said, “Our home is dear to us…this is the second time our family has been displaced,” recalling his grandparents’ flight during the 1948 Nakba. Ahmed al Sayyes, another resident, called the destruction “a tragedy after tragedy,” unsure where he and his family will go next.

Russian drones struck apartment buildings and power infrastructure in the southern Ukrainian city of Odesa overnight, injuring six people, including a toddler and two other children, officials said Wednesday. Britain’s Queen Camilla on Wednesday publicly shared her experience of indecent assault for the first time, highlighting her long-standing campaign against domestic violence. The United States on Wednesday imposed sanctions on four Venezuelan oil companies and designated four additional oil tankers as blocked property, accusing them of supporting President Nicolás Maduro’s government. The Treasury Department’s Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) named the ships Nord Star, Lunar Tide, Rosalind, and Della, along with their ownership companies, in the sanctions. The move bars the firms and vessels from accessing any property or financial assets in the U.S., and violations could trigger further penalties. State Department spokesman Tommy Pigott said the action continues President Donald Trump’s pressure campaign against Maduro and his allies. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent added that the U.S. “will not allow the illegitimate Maduro regime to profit from exporting oil while it floods the United States with deadly drugs.” The sanctions come amid a broader U.S. crackdown that has included the seizure of two oil tankers off Venezuela’s coast, strikes on alleged drug-smuggling boats in the Caribbean and Pacific, and a recent CIA drone attack on a suspected cartel docking area. Trump has also ordered a “blockade” of all sanctioned Venezuelan oil tankers and demanded the return of assets previously seized from U.S. oil companies, accusing Maduro’s government of using oil revenues to fund drug trafficking and other crimes.

BNP Standing Committee member Salahuddin Ahmed on Thursday said there is no legal scope to suspend or defer the election following the death of BNP Chairperson and former Prime Minister Begum Khaleda Zia. “There is no legal scope to defer the election. Since our party has nominated alternative candidates for the seats allocated to her, they will become the BNP candidates if their nominations pass scrutiny,” he said while talking to reporters at the party chairperson’s Gulshan office. Explaining the legal position, Salahuddin said if the BNP chief had died after the scrutiny of nominations or the allocation of election symbols, legal complications could have arisen and the question of postponement might have come up. “But that is not the situation now. She passed away before the scrutiny process. Legally, she no longer exists as a legal entity, so her nomination paper will not be valid during scrutiny,” he said. In that case, the BNP leader said, if the nominations of the alternative candidate are found valid, that persons will be the BNP candidates in place of Begum Khaleda Zia. Asked whether BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman has broken down following his mother’s death, Salahuddin said Tarique Rahman is a political personality and must remain mentally strong. “There is no alternative to this. No matter how shocked he is, he must remain strong in the interests of the nation,” he said. Salahuddin said Begum Khaleda Zia sacrificed her entire life, her children and her family while struggling for democracy. “She had an unmatched love for this country, its people and its soil. Her patriotism has no comparison,” he said. The BNP leader said that although she lost everything in her personal life, she achieved a position that very few people in the world ever attain. “We will move forward carrying her sacrifices, contributions and patriotism as our strength to build a strong, democratic and discrimination-free Bangladesh. We must do this, as it is the demand of the nation,” he said. Salahuddin said Begum Khaleda Zia was not only a leader of BNP or Bangladesh, but also a leader for democracy-loving people across the world. “She rose above party lines and political differences, and the people of this country placed her in that position of honour. That is a major achievement in our national life,” he said. At the same time, Salahuddin said the pain and emptiness created by her death would never be filled. “We have lost her, and that sorrow will remain forever,” he said. Attack on two media outlets is a shame for nation: Salahuddin Khaleda Zia passed away early on Tuesday morning at Evercare Hospital at the age of 80. Her Namaz-e-Janaza was held on Manik Mia Avenue on Wednesday, attended by millions, after which she was buried beside her late husband and former president Ziaur Rahman with full state honours. She was nominated by BNP for three constituencies—Dinajpur-3, Feni-1 and Bogura-7—for the upcoming 13th parliamentary election, although the party also fielded alternative candidates in view of her critical health condition.

The government has begun the new year with another cut in interest rates on National Savings Certificates, dealing a fresh blow to middle-income families and retirees who rely on these instruments for regular income. The Internal Resources Division (IRD) announced that the revised rates took effect from Thursday, marking the second reduction in profit rates on savings tools in the past six months. As 2026 begins, many savers are finding their financial cushion shrinking. National Savings Certificates, commonly known as Sanchaypatra, are widely used to meet daily household expenses, medical costs and education fees, particularly by pensioners and small investors. Under the new rates, the popular five-year Family Savings Certificate now offers a return of 10.54 percent for investments up to Tk7.5 lakh, down sharply from the previous 11.93 percent. For investments above Tk7.5 lakh, the rate has been fixed at 10.41 percent. Pensioners have also been affected, with the Pensioner Savings Certificate rate reduced from 11.98 percent to 10.59 percent for investments under Tk7.5 lakh while returns for larger investments have been set at 10.41 percent. Similarly, the five-year Bangladesh Savings Certificate rate has been lowered from 11.83 percent to 10.44 percent for smaller investments, and to 10.41 percent for amounts exceeding Tk7.5 lakh. The three-month profit-based savings certificate now yields 10.48 percent for investments up to Tk7.5 lakh, compared to the earlier 11.82 percent while returns for higher investments stand at 10.43 percent. The revised structure effectively creates two categories of savers with those investing more than Tk7.5 lakh facing steeper reductions in monthly returns. Officials say the rates are reviewed every six months as part of broader fiscal management. By cutting savings tool rates, the government aims to reduce pressure on public borrowing and encourage depositors to keep more money in banks, strengthening liquidity and lending capacity in the banking sector. However, certificates purchased before July 1, 2025, will continue to earn returns at the previously fixed rates until maturity. The new rates will apply only to fresh investments or reinvestments after existing certificates expire.

Asked about his conversation with Indian External Affairs Minister Jaishankar, Adviser Hossain said, "I tell you, we didn't have such a one-to-one meeting. That scope was not there. Other dignitaries were there. I would say it's a courtesy that all maintain. No bilateral issues were discussed," he said. Law Adviser Dr Asif Nazrul and National Security Adviser Dr Khalilur Rahman met the dignitaries on Wednesday. The dignitaries arrived in Dhaka to pay last respects to former Prime Minister and national leader Khaleda Zia, who passed away on Tuesday. The advisers expressed their gratitude to the visiting dignitaries for their presence and showing solidarity with the people of Bangladesh during this time of national mourning, said Chief Adviser’s Deputy Press Secretary Abul Kalam Azad Majumder. BNP Chairperson and three-time former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia was laid to rest beside her husband and late President Ziaur Rahman at Sher-e-Bangla Nagar in the capital on Wednesday afternoon. She was buried around 4:30 pm with state honour following her namaz-e-janaza at the South Plaza of the Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban. Members of her family, high-ranking state officials, government authorities, foreign guests, diplomats and BNP-nominated politicians were present. Khaleda Zia was given a guard of honour under the supervision of the President Guard Regiment (PGR) before her burial. On behalf of Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus, his Military Secretary, Major General Abul Hasnat Mohammad Tariq, placed a wreath at the grave of Khaleda Zia.

A day after her burial, BNP leaders, activists, and common people on Thursday visited the grave of former Prime Minister and BNP Chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia to offer fateha and pay their tributes. The entrance to Zia Udyan was opened to the public after 12 noon on Thursday, allowing people to visit the grave. A large number of people gathered earlier in front of Zia Udyan to visit her grave, but security personnel did not allow entry at that time. The gate remained closed for the general public since the completion of her burial on Wednesday evening. Once the entrance to the grave was opened at noon, visitors were seen offering fateha and placing flowers and wreaths at the grave as a mark of their love and respect for their beloved leader, who was laid to rest beside her husband, late President Ziaur Rahman, following a historic namaz-e-janaza on Wednesday. Former State Minister for Home Affairs Lutfozzaman Babar visited the grave in the morning amid tight security, while BNP Joint Secretary General Syed Emran Saleh Prince offered prayers standing in front of the security cordon. In grief, Tarique Rahman finds family in the nation Later, speaking to reporters, Babar said Khaleda Zia upheld the ideals of Ziaur Rahman, and BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman is following her principles. He praised her lifelong commitment to democracy and said future generations would remember her contributions. Many visitors travelled from outside Dhaka, including Munshiganj resident Fatema Sharmin and Panchagarh district BNP President Jahirul Islam, who also came to pay their respects at the grave. Security forces, including the Army, Police, and other law enforcement personnel, maintained strict arrangements at the mausoleum. The National Board of Revenue (NBR) has entered a new phase of digital service delivery by making the issuance of Utilisation Permission (UP) under the Customs Bond Management System (CBMS) completely online. The use of CBMS software was made mandatory from Thursday (January1 )for receiving and issuing all UP-related services following an earlier circular issued by the NBR. All UPs are now being issued online through the three customs bond commissionerates under the NBR, ending the long-standing practice of manual submission and approval. The NBR had launched the automated CBMS software on January 1, 2025, with the aim of delivering all services to bonded warehouse licence-holding entities through an online platform. Through the system, bonded warehouse operators can obtain UP online from the respective customs bond commissionerates in line with the approved policies of the Duty Exemption and Drawback Office for duty-free import of raw materials. With the introduction of online UP issuance, beneficiary industrial units under the bonded warehouse system no longer need to submit paper-based applications or remain physically present at customs bond commissionerates. The CBMS is a modern, technology-driven system that allows end-to-end online processing of UP applications, including submission, scrutiny and approval. According to the NBR, the system will ensure faster service delivery, greater transparency and improved accountability, while eliminating the complexities of manual documentation and reducing person-dependent interventions.  

Four policemen were injured in an attack by a group of drug peddlers during an anti-narcotics drive in Sreepur upazila of Gazipur district early Thursday. Two of the injured were identified as sub-inspectors- Arup Kumar Biswas and Mohammad Masud Rana. Tipped off, a team from Sreepur Police Station conducted a drive at the house of Piar Ali College in Mawna area under Sreepur municipality and arrested Lucky Akter, Jahangir Hossain and Md Rajib for their alleged involvement in drug trading. After news of the arrests spread, local drug peddlers and their associates equipped with locally-made weapons attacked  the police team and hurled brick chips and stones, leaving four policemen injured. At one stage, the attackers vandalised two police pickup vans and a CNG-run auto-rickshaw. They also managed to snatch two detainees including Jahangir Hossain from police custody. The injured were taken to a local hospital. Police have so far arrested 10 people in this connection. SI Arup Kumar also filed a case with Sreepur Police Station against 24 identified people and 80-90 unidentified people. Police also seized three motorbike from the spot. A drive is on to arrest the other accused.    

Banking operations returned to normal on Thursday as five troubled Islamic banks in Bangladesh officially merged under a single entity, Sammilito Islami Bank, allowing depositors to access their funds after months of uncertainty. The consolidation, effective from the start of 2026, brings together EXIM Bank, Social Islami Bank, First Security Islami Bank, Global Islami Bank, and Union Bank. Across Dhaka, old signage has been replaced with banners reflecting the unified brand, signalling a fresh start for the merged institution. For many customers, Thursday marked a long-awaited relief. Monir Hossain, a client of the former First Security Islami Bank’s Dhanmondi branch, said, “It feels great to finally be able to withdraw my money after such a long wait. This fund was extremely urgent for me.” Institutional deposits to be converted into shares as Bangladesh Bank finalises 'Sammilito Islami Bank' merger To manage the transition and safeguard the banking system, the Bangladesh Bank has implemented a structured withdrawal scheme: Deposits up to Tk2 lakh: Fully protected under the Deposit Insurance Act, these funds can be withdrawn in full at any time.Deposits above Tk2 lakh: Withdrawals are capped at Tk1 lakh every three months over a two-year period.Special exceptions: Citizens over 60 and those suffering from critical illnesses, such as cancer or kidney failure, may access funds beyond the prescribed limits for medical needs.According to a circular issued by the central bank on Dec. 30, 2025, all assets, liabilities, and contracts of the five merging banks have been officially transferred to Sammilito Islami Bank. The Bangladesh Bank has reassured the public that deposits are secure, and clients who do not withdraw immediately will continue to earn market-based profits while retaining the right to take loans against their balances. Sammilito Islami Bank ready for inauguration; expected to reshape Shariah banking The merger comes amid efforts to stabilise the nation’s banking sector and restore confidence following financial stress at the five institutions.

A total of 24.30 lakh students under the Mosque-based Children and Mass Education project received their textbooks for the new academic year on Thursday. Religious Affairs Adviser Dr AFM Khalid Hossain inaugurated the textbook distribution programme for 2026 as the chief guest at the Islamic Foundation auditorium in the capital. Under the project titled “Mosque-based Children and Mass Education Activities for Development of Moral and Religious Values (8th phase)”, some 34,36,704 textbooks are being distributed among students of 73,768 centres across the country. Director General of the Islamic Foundation Abdur Salam Khan chaired the programme. AFM Khalid said officials of the Ministry of Religious Affairs worked tirelessly day and night to get the project approved completing various bureaucratic processes. He said initiatives would be taken to bring the project under the revenue budget. Highlighting various initiatives taken for the welfare of Islamic scholars, Dr Khalid Hossain said PhD scholarships would be provided to alems through the Islamic Foundation. Imams and alems holding postgraduate degrees in Islamic studies would be eligible for the scholarships which will support PhD studies in Islamic disciplines at renowned universities around the world, he added. Necessary funds are being arranged for this purpose, he  said. The adviser also said that Islamic scholars who have made significant contributions to the service of Islam across the country would be honoured centrally within this month. He further said letters have been sent to four ministries to take necessary steps for the implementation of the Dawrae Hadith certificate of Qawmi madrasas. He said the Law Ministry has already amended law to allow Dawrae Hadith certificate holders to obtain marriage registrar (Nikah Registrar) licences. Productive discussions have also been held with the Chief Adviser regarding the appointment of these certificate holders as khatibs, imams and religious teachers in various offices and organisations under the Ministry of Defence. Under the current tenure of the project, a total of 1.45 crore students will gradually receive religious and moral education including pre-primary education and instruction in the Holy Quran, he added.    

E-cigarettes, vapes and other emerging tobacco products have been completely banned in Bangladesh as the Smoking and Tobacco Products Use Control (Amendment) Ordinance, 2025 has come into effect with provisions for jail terms and hefty fines for violations. The ordinance, proposed by the Health Services Division under the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare to strengthen the existing Smoking and Tobacco Products Use Control Act, 2005, came into effect on December 30 following approval by the President, said the Chief Adviser’s press wing on Thursday. Under the new law, the production, import, export, storage, sale and use of e-cigarettes and emerging tobacco products have been declared punishable offences. Violators may face up to six months in jail and a fine of up to Tk 5 lakh. Foreign cigarettes imported under false declaration seized at Ctg Port The other objectives of the ordinance are to protect people from the harmful effects of tobacco and nicotine products and repeal separate laws related to bidi production by introducing a unified legal framework. Penalties have been significantly increased under the amended ordinance with provisions for cancellation of licences and seizure of goods in the case of companies. The ordinance also includes provisions for filing and conducting cases under the Code of Criminal Procedure One of the key changes is the expansion of the definition of ‘tobacco products’ to include e-cigarettes, Electronic Nicotine Delivery Systems, Heated Tobacco Products and nicotine pouches. The government has also been empowered to declare any similar product as a tobacco product through gazette notification. Separate definitions for ‘nicotine’ and ‘nicotine products’ have been added, while the scope of ‘public place’ has been significantly broadened. The government also banned the use of tobacco products in all public places and public transport. The fine for violating this provision has been increased from Tk 300 to Tk 2,000. All forms of tobacco advertising and promotion have been prohibited in print, electronic and online media, including social media and OTT platforms. The sale of tobacco products has also been banned within 100 metres of educational institutions, hospitals, clinics, playgrounds and children’s parks. Display and promotion of tobacco packs at points of sale have been banned,along with the use of tobacco company names or logos in corporate social responsibility activities and financial sponsorship of events or programmes by tobacco companies. The ordinance has imposed a complete ban on the production, marketing and use of bidis made from kumbi leaves and tendu leaves. Tk 5,000 fine for selling cigarettes near schools, hospitals Mixing any harmful or addictive substances with tobacco or tobacco products has been declared a punishable offence. The law has further strengthened provisions on health warnings and standard packaging, making it mandatory for tobacco packs to carry graphic health warnings covering 75 percent of the package. The sale of tobacco products without standard packaging has been prohibited.

The Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) will not be played in Chattogram this season, with the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) revising the tournament schedule and shifting all fixtures originally allocated to the port city to Sylhet. Under the earlier plan, the Chattogram leg was set to begin on January 5. However, BPL officials confirmed that those matches have now been relocated to Sylhet, extending the Sylhet phase of the tournament from January 2 to January 12.  The competition will then move to Dhaka, where the knockout rounds and final will be staged. BPL Governing Council member secretary Iftekhar Rahman said the media that the decision was taken to ease broadcast logistics and to align preparations with Bangladesh’s upcoming T20 World Cup commitments. With limited time to relocate production equipment between venues, organisers opted to consolidate the group-stage fixtures in Sylhet before shifting operations to the capital. The schedule was also adjusted following the death of former prime minister Khaleda Zia on December 30. Two matches scheduled that day were postponed as a mark of respect and will now be played on January 4 at the Sylhet International Cricket Stadium. In total, Sylhet will host matches from December 26 through January 12, including the rescheduled fixtures and all games originally planned for Chattogram. The Dhaka phase will begin on January 15 and feature the final round of league matches, followed by the playoffs. The first eliminator and the second qualifier will be played on January 19, with another qualifier scheduled for January 21. The final of the tournament will take place in Dhaka on January 23, as originally planned.  

Indian Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on Thursday visited the Bangladesh High Commission in New Delhi and paid homage to the former Prime Minister Begum Khaleda Zia and signed the condolence book. "Sincerest condolences on behalf of the Government and the People of India, at the passing of Begum Khaleda Zia, former Prime Minister of Bangladesh and Chairperson of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party," he wrote.  The Indian Defence Minister said Begum Zia's notable contributions to strengthening Bangladesh-India ties will always be remembered. The 123rd birth anniversary of famous poet and litterateur Jasimuddin, widely revered as the ‘Polli Kobi’, is being observed on Thursday. The poet was born on this day in 1903 at his maternal uncle’s house in Tambulkhana village in Faridpur district. UNB Faridpur correspondent reports: On the occasion of the day, floral tributes were paid at the poet’s grave around 10:30 am by the district administration, Jasim Foundation, Press Club and several cultural and social organisations. Later, a milad and doa mahfil was held at the venue. Among those present were Deputy Commissioner Kamrul Hasan Mollah, Superintendent of Police Nazrul Islam, Additional Deputy Commissioner (General) Sohrab Hossain, Ramananda Pal, Press Club President Kabirul Islam Siddiqui, Professor MA Samad and Mafiz Imam Milon. Later, people from all walks of life and members of different cultural and social organisations paid their respect to the poet. Two of his legendary works, ‘Nakshi Kanthar Math’ (Field of the Embroidered Quilt) and ‘Sojan Badiar Ghat’ (Gypsy Wharf) are considered two masterpieces in Bengali literature and has been globally translated. Being a versatile writer, Jasimuddin is also respectfully remembered for his numerous other creative works including poems, ballads, songs, dramas, novels, stories, memoirs, travelogues and more. As an esteemed lyricist, Jasimuddin penned many popular Bengali songs including “Amar sonar moyna pakhi,” “Prano shokhi re,” “Amay eto raate,” “Nishithe jaiyo fulobone,” “Amar haar kala korlam re,” “Amay bhaisaili re,” and others. For his remarkable literary works, Jasimuddin was awarded the President's Award for Pride of Performance in 1958, DLitt. by Rabindra Bharati University, India in 1969, Ekushey Padak in 1976 and Independence Day Award (posthumously) in 1978. In January 2018, Bangla Academy announced Jasimuddin Literary Award, a biennial award to be given for lifetime contribution to Bangla literature. Jasim Uddin was born on January 1, 1903, at his maternal grandfather’s house in Tambulkhana village under Kaijuri Union on the outskirts of Faridpur. His father, Ansar Uddin Mollah, was a schoolteacher and his mother was Amina Khatun. He studied at Faridpur Welfare School and later at Faridpur District School now Faridpur Zilla School and passed the entrance examination in 1921. He completed his BA and MA in Bangla from the University of Calcutta in 1929 and 1931 respectively. Jasim Uddin died on March 14, 1976.

Bangladesh’s state-owned airline Biman Bangladesh Airlines posted a net profit of Tk 785.21 crore in fiscal 2024–25, nearly tripling earnings from a year earlier, as higher passenger traffic and tighter cost controls lifted the carrier’s financial performance, officials said. The state-owned airline also achieved an operational profit of Tk 1,602 crore during the same period, while its total revenue stood at Tk 11,559 crore — up 9.46 percent year-on-year — the highest in the airline’s history. With this, Biman continued its profit streak for the fifth straight year and posted net profits in nine of the last ten fiscal years, according to a media release signed by Boshra Islam, general manager (public relations) of Biman, on Thursday. The financial statements were disclosed at the airline’s Annual General Meeting (AGM), with Biman Board of Directors Chairman Sk. Bashir Uddin in the chair. The board members and shareholders were also present. Representatives from the Ministry of Finance, Ministry of Civil Aviation and Tourism, Ministry of Power, Energy and Mineral Resources, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Cabinet Division and Ministry of Commerce were also present. Experts call for strategy, skilled workforce to lift Biman from setbacks During FY2024–25, Biman operated 21 aircraft and transported a total of 33.83 lakh passengers across 30 domestic and international destinations, representing a 1 percent increase compared to the previous year. The airline’s cargo operations showed significant growth, carrying 43,918 metric tonnes and generating revenue of Tk 925 crore, a 45.21 percent rise year-on-year. Besides, Biman provided ground handling services to 31,112 foreign airline flights, serving more than 6.1 million passengers. Officials said Biman is a fully self-financed state-owned enterprise and has not received any government subsidy in its 54-year history. In January 2025, the airline achieved its highest-ever ticket sales, reflecting growing passenger confidence and rising market popularity. Faster baggage delivery, improved in-flight services and modernised airport processes have contributed to higher customer satisfaction. A mild cold wave is sweeping over parts of the country and it may abate in some places, Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD) said on Thursday. According to the Met office bulletin, “A mild cold wave is sweeping over the districts of Madaripur, Gopalganj, Rajshahi, Pabna, Sirajganj, Dinajpur, Panchagarh, Sylhet, Moulvibazar, Cumilla, Khulna, Satkhira, Jashore, Chuadanga, Kushtia, Barishal and Bhola and it may abate from some places.” Weather may remain dry with temporary partly cloudy sky over the country. Moderate to thick fog may occur at many places over the country from midnight to morning and it may continue at places till noon. Air navigation, inland river transport and road communication may disrupt temporarily due to thick fog. Night temperature may rise slightly and day temperature may rise by 1-2° C over the country. Ridge of Sub-continental high extends up to West Bengal and adjoining area. Seasonal low lies over South Bay, extending its trough to northeast Bay.  

A bar fire in the Swiss Alps during New Year’s festivities has resulted in deaths and injuries. According to local media, police confirmed that people were killed and hurt in the incident, though officials had not yet released the exact number of casualties. The fire broke out in Crans-Montana, a ski resort town in Switzerland’s Alpine region. Authorities said further information was not immediately available.

Zohran Mamdani officially became New York City’s mayor shortly after midnight on Thursday, taking his first oath of office inside a historic, long-closed subway station in Manhattan. A Democrat, Mamdani made history as the first Muslim mayor of the nation’s largest city, swearing in with his hand placed on a Quran. Calling the moment “the honor and privilege of a lifetime,” Mamdani spoke briefly during the private ceremony, which was led by New York Attorney General Letitia James. Still, high living costs and rising rents remain major concerns. He will also have to navigate relations with Republican President Donald Trump. During the campaign, Trump threatened to cut federal funding and suggested deploying National Guard troops if Mamdani won. Bangladesh cut retail fuel prices by Tk 2 a litre from January 1, reversing an increase imposed a month earlier as part of its automatic fuel pricing mechanism. The Energy and Mineral Resources Division said in a notification issued late Wednesday that the prices of diesel, octane, petrol and kerosene have been reduced to Tk 102, Tk 122, Tk 118 and Tk 114 per litre respectively. Previously, the fuels were priced at Tk 104 for diesel, Tk 124 for octane, Tk 120 for petrol and Tk 116 for kerosene. Domestic fuel prices in Bangladesh are adjusted monthly in line with global market movements under the “Revised Fuel Automatic Pricing Guidelines,” the notification said, adding that the latest revision aims to keep fuel comparatively affordable for consumers. Bangladesh hikes fuel prices by Tk 2 per litre from December The cut follows a Tk 2-per-litre increase across all fuel types that took effect on Dec. 1.

Bangladesh’s capital market posted gains in the first half of trading on Thursday, with key indices rising at both the Dhaka Stock Exchange (DSE) and the Chittagong Stock Exchange (CSE). At the DSE, the benchmark index DSEX climbed 35 points, while the Shariah-based DSES gained 8 points and the blue-chip DS30 index advanced 11 points. Out of the traded issues, the prices of 295 companies rose, while 37 declined and 49 remained unchanged. The turnover at the DSE crossed Tk 110 crore in the first half of the session. DSE, CSE indices slide at opening trade The CSE also witnessed an upward trend, with its overall index CASPI increasing by 43 points. Most listed companies traded higher on the port city bourse, as share prices of 48 companies rose against declines in 19, while prices of 4 companies remained unchanged. The trading volume at the CSE exceeded Tk 1.3 crore during the first half.

The United States on Wednesday imposed sanctions on four Venezuelan oil companies and added four more oil tankers to its list of blocked property, accusing them of supporting President Nicolás Maduro’s government through a shadow fleet. The move is part of the Trump administration’s sustained campaign to pressure Maduro. U.S. authorities have also seized two tankers off Venezuela’s coast, pursued another vessel, and carried out a series of strikes targeting suspected drug-smuggling boats in the Caribbean and eastern Pacific. The attacks announced Wednesday raised the reported death toll to at least 110 since early September. Last week, the CIA reportedly conducted a drone strike at a Venezuelan docking area used by drug cartels, marking the first known operation directly on Venezuelan soil. The Treasury Department’s Office of Foreign Assets Control designated the ships Nord Star, Lunar Tide, Rosalind, and Della, along with their ownership companies. State Department spokesman Tommy Pigott said the sanctions are intended to “disrupt the network supporting Maduro and his illegitimate regime.” Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent emphasized that the U.S. will prevent Maduro’s government from profiting from oil exports while allegedly trafficking drugs into the country. A youth was hacked to death allegedly by miscreants in Jhauchhar area under Hazaribagh Police Station of Dhaka early Thursday, on the first day of 2026. The victim was identified as Md Shipon, 24, son of Md Shah Alam of local Boro Mosque area under the same police station. The concerned police station’s sub-inspector Suman Chandra Shil a group of assailants hacked him with sharp weapons and left critically injured. On information, they rushed to the spot and found the youth lying in a pool of blood in an alley near Siam School in the Jhauchhar area, he said. He was rushed to Dhaka Medical College Hospital where physicians declared him dead upon arrival around 3:30am, the sub-inspector said, adding that the body has been kept at the hospital morgue for autopsy. Efforts were underway to identify those involved in the murder, he added.

Dhaka, the overcrowded capital city of Bangladesh, has ranked fifth on the list of cities with the worst air quality with an AQI score of 184 at 10:10 am this morning (January 1, 2026).   Today Dhaka’s air was classified as ‘unhealthy for sensitive groups’ referring to a healthy threat, according to the AQI index. When the AQI value for particle pollution is between 50 and 100, air quality is considered ‘moderate’, usually sensitive individuals should consider limiting prolonged outdoor exertion, between 101 and 150, air quality is considered ‘unhealthy for sensitive groups’, between 150 and 200 is ‘unhealthy’, between 201 and 300 is said to be 'very unhealthy', while a reading of 301+ is considered 'hazardous', posing serious health risks to residents. Egypt’s Cairo, India’s Delhi and again India’s Kolkata cities respectively occupied the first, second and third spots on the list, with AQI scores of 294, 264, and 188 respectively. The AQI, an index for reporting daily air quality, informs people how clean or polluted the air of a certain city is and what associated health effects might be a concern for them. The AQI in Bangladesh is based on five pollutants: particulate matter (PM10 and PM2.5), NO2, CO, SO2, and ozone. Dhaka’s air turns ‘unhealthy for sensitive groups’ Dhaka has long been grappling with air pollution issues. Its air quality usually turns unhealthy in winter and improves during the monsoon. As per World Health Organization (WHO), air pollution kills an estimated seven million people worldwide every year, mainly due to increased mortality from stroke, heart disease, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, lung cancer, and acute respiratory infections.

A CNG-run autorickshaw driver and a motorcyclist were killed as a head-on collision occurred between their vehicles on the Mouchak Flyover in Dhaka early Thursday. The deceased were identified as autorickshaw driver Md Nayon Talukder, 70, of Dholaipar in Jatrabari, and Md Yasin Arafat, 21, a resident of Dakshin Mugda of the city. Three-year-old girl dies in road accident in Sherpur Both victims were rescued in critical condition and taken to the emergency department of Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH), where physicians declared them dead on arrival around 6:15am. Inspector Md Faruk, in-charge of the hospital police outpost, said the bodies have been kept at the hospital morgue and the concerned police station has been informed.

Five people were killed and another one was injured as a truck ploughed through a roadside banana market and overturned on Rajshahi-Natore highway at Jhalmalia in Puthia upazila of Rajshahi district on Thursday morning. The deceased were identified as Siam, 15, son of Shaheen Ali of Kafuria village, Munkar Pramanik, 35, son of Akkel Pramanik of Paikpara village in Sadar upazila, Sentu, 40, son of Saiam Uddin of Bagatipara upazila, Islam Uddin, 60, son of Mahtab Ali and Raihan Ali, 45, son of Abdul Jalil Uddin of Charghat upazila. Police have recovered the hanging body of a female student of Rajshahi University (RU) from a student hostel in Binodpur area of Rajshahi city. The recovery was made on Wednesday afternoon, police said. The deceased was identified as Lamisa Nawrin Pushpita, a first-year student of the Department of Islamic History and Culture. She hailed from Jhenaidah district. Officer-in-charge of Motihar Police Station Abdul Kalam Azad said the student was found hanging from a ceiling fan with a scarf tied around her neck. On information, police broke open the door of the room and rushed her to Rajshahi Medical College Hospital where physicians declared her dead. Her body was sent to the hospital morgue for autopsy, the OC added. RU Proctor Prof Mahbubur Rahman said the victim’s father has been informed and the body will be handed over after completion of legal procedures.

Bangladesh’s economy is ending the year on a divided note, with hard-won stability in the external sector offset by a deepening crisis of confidence at home, as weak investment, soaring bad loans and political uncertainty continue to restrain growth. Analysts say decisive policy actions have helped calm foreign exchange markets and rebuild reserves, but the broader economy remains trapped in a cycle of high inflation, tight credit and a fragile banking system, delaying any meaningful recovery. The taka has strengthened markedly after touching Tk132 per US dollar under the previous administration, now trading near Tk122.  Authorities have tightened oversight on money laundering and intensified action against illegal hundi networks, driving more remittances through formal channels. Remittance inflows grew 27 percent in the last fiscal year and remained robust at more than 17 percent through November 2025, according to economist Mamun Rashid.  As a result, he said, net foreign exchange reserves have rebounded sharply, rising from a precarious $17 billion to nearly $28 billion, with gross reserves exceeding $32 billion. China’s military announced Wednesday that it has wrapped up two days of large-scale exercises near Taiwan, concluding a show of force that heightened regional tensions as 2025 drew to a close. In a statement released late Tuesday, the People’s Liberation Army said the drills, dubbed “Justice Mission 2025,” were completed successfully and served to test the military’s joint combat capabilities. The announcement, delivered through a short video accompanied by patriotic music, did not provide operational details or specify the exact time the maneuvers ended. According to earlier notices, the exercises were conducted Monday and Tuesday in waters surrounding Taiwan, though it remained unclear whether some activities extended into Wednesday. Senior Capt. Li Xi, spokesperson for the PLA’s Eastern Theater Command, said Chinese forces remain on heightened alert and will continue to boost combat readiness through intensive training. He said the military would firmly counter what Beijing calls “Taiwan independence” movements and outside interference, while safeguarding China’s sovereignty and territorial integrity. Taiwan remains Beijing’s most sensitive diplomatic and security issue. China claims the self-governed island as part of its territory and has vowed to reunify it with the mainland, by force if necessary. Taiwan separated from China in 1949 following the Chinese civil war and has since maintained its own democratic government. China routinely sends military aircraft and naval vessels near the island and has expanded the frequency and scale of such operations in recent years. Zohran Mamdani is set to take office as New York City’s next mayor at the stroke of midnight ushering in 2026, beginning a day-long series of inaugural events. The Democrat will participate in two separate swearing-in ceremonies on Thursday. The first will be a private, family-only oath shortly after midnight at a long-abandoned subway station beneath Manhattan. A second, public ceremony is scheduled for Thursday afternoon, culminating in a block party outside City Hall. Because a mayor’s term officially begins on January 1, it has long been customary for incoming mayors to hold both a symbolic overnight oath and a larger daytime celebration. Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams took his initial oath in Times Square following the New Year’s Eve ball drop, while former Mayor Bill de Blasio was sworn in at his Brooklyn home. Mamdani’s midnight ceremony will take place at the former City Hall subway station, a historic stop known for its ornate arches and vaulted ceilings. Police in Sylhet’s Gowainghat upazila arrested a woman with 300 yaba tablets on Monday night. The woman, identified as 30-year-old Sapna Begum, was arrested around 10:45 pm in Mohammodpur Kalinagar area of Purba Jaflong union during a special anti-drug operation. During a search, police recovered 300 yaba tablets and 19,500 taka in cash, believed to be from drug sales. Youth arrested in Sylhet with large quantity of Indian goods Md. Moniruzzaman, Officer-in-Charge of Gowainghat Police Station, confirmed the arrest and said, “A case has been filed against Sapna Begum under the Narcotics Control Act.” He added that the police follow a zero-tolerance policy against drugs and similar raids will continue regularly to make Gowainghat drug-free.  

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has questioned suggestions that the Premier League title race this season is only between his side and leaders Arsenal. His comments came after Arsenal moved five points clear at the top with a dominant 4-1 win over Aston Villa on Tuesday. The defeat pushed third-placed Villa six points behind Arsenal, though City can cut the gap to two points with a win at Sunderland on Thursday. Asked if the title fight was now only between City and Arsenal, Guardiola expressed doubt. He said opinions have changed quickly in recent weeks, with different teams being counted in the race at different times. Liverpool are currently fourth in the table and trail Arsenal by 13 points as they try to defend their title. City ended 2025 strongly with eight straight wins in all competitions after a difficult, trophyless year. However, they face a tough test away to Sunderland, who are unbeaten at home this season. Guardiola said Sunderland have been strong since returning to the Premier League and noted that several top teams have struggled to win at their ground. He added that City are ready for a difficult match. The City boss also played down transfer speculation ahead of the January window. The European Union’s top diplomat on Wednesday rejected Russia’s claims that Ukraine targeted Russian government sites, calling the allegations an attempt to distract attention and derail ongoing peace efforts. Kaja Kallas, the EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, said the claims were unfounded and should not be taken seriously. Writing on social media, she accused Moscow of trying to shift focus from its own actions in the war. She said no one should believe claims made by an aggressor that has repeatedly targeted Ukrainian infrastructure and civilians. Earlier this week, the Kremlin alleged that Ukraine had tried to carry out a drone attack on one of Russian President Vladimir Putin’s residences near Lake Valdai in northwestern Russia. Moscow said it could reconsider its position in peace talks because of the alleged incident. Russian officials and state media later repeated the claim, with some lawmakers using strong language. Russia’s defence ministry also released what it said was evidence, including a map and video footage of a downed drone. However, the footage could not be independently verified. Ukrainian officials dismissed the material as unconvincing. Ukraine’s foreign ministry spokesperson Heorhii Tykhyi described the Russian claims as laughable, according to Reuters. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky also denied the allegation. He said the claim was linked to recent progress in US-led talks aimed at achieving a ceasefire and accused Russia of trying to disrupt positive momentum between Ukraine and its partners. Zelensky warned that the allegation could be used as a pretext for further Russian strikes. While no damage was reported in Kyiv following brief air alerts overnight, several other parts of Ukraine were hit by drones, including the port city of Odesa, where civilians were injured and power supplies were disrupted. Marvel Studios has released a second teaser for the upcoming film Avengers: Doomsday, highlighting Thor’s emotional fight to protect his daughter. The movie is scheduled to hit theatres on December 18, 2026. The teaser features Chris Hemsworth returning as Thor and focuses on family and sacrifice. It opens in a quiet forest where Thor is seen praying to his late father Odin, asking for strength to keep his adopted daughter Love safe as he prepares for another battle. In brief scenes, Love is shown older than when audiences last saw her in Thor: Love and Thunder. Thor is also seen at home, gently kissing her forehead as a serious voice-over continues in the background. The new teaser comes a week after the first Doomsday teaser, which revealed the return of Chris Evans as Captain America and introduced a surprising family twist involving his character. According to Variety, Love is the daughter of the villain Gorr the God Butcher, played by Christian Bale in Love and Thunder. The character is portrayed by Hemsworth’s real-life daughter, India. In the earlier film, Gorr revived Love before his death and asked Thor to raise her as his own. Marvel has earlier confirmed a large cast for Avengers: Doomsday, including Chris Evans, Anthony Mackie, Paul Rudd, Tom Hiddleston, Letitia Wright and Simu Liu. BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman on Wednesday called for united efforts to restore democracy in the country through a free and fair election and the formation of an accountable government. In a message marking the English New Year 2026, he also appealed to people to reject destruction and revenge and instead build a society founded on love, tolerance, peace and harmony. “The past year still remains vivid in our minds. Alongside achievements and successes, there were also bitter experiences and the pain of losing loved ones, which have left us both encouraged and deeply saddened,” Tarique said. “On this day, our commitment must be to form an accountable government through a free and fair election, ensure the political and economic empowerment of the people, and work together to fully restore democracy,” he added. Chinese Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Lin Jian has said the general election, scheduled for February 12 next year, is Bangladesh’s internal affair and reiterated its position of "non-interference" in other countries' internal issues. Responding to a question in a regular media briefing in Beijing, he said China upholds the principle of "non-interference" in other countries’ internal affairs. "We are confident that the interim government and people of Bangladesh are capable of handling their own affairs well and pursuing a development path suited to their national conditions," said the Chinese Spokesperson. China remembers Khaleda Zia’s contributions to Dhaka-Beijing ties He hoped that Bangladesh would hold a smooth general election and advance the country’s political agenda in an orderly manner.

Sri Lankan foreign minister Vijitha Herath, who is currently visiting Dhaka, paid a courtesy call on BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman on Wednesday night. The meeting took place at around 8:30pm at the BNP Chairperson’s political office in Gulshan. Sri Lanka’s High Commissioner to Bangladesh, Dharmapala Weerakkody, accompanied the foreign minister during the meeting, said BNP Media Cell member Sayrul Kabir Khan. During the discussion, he said the two sides exchanged views on issues related to mutual interest between Bangladesh and Sri Lanka. Khaleda's passing leaves irreplaceable void, but her vision, legacy will endure: Modi Sayrul said the Sri Lankan Foreign Minister expressed condolences on behalf of his country and conveyed sympathy to Tarique Rahman and his bereaved family over the death of his mother and former Prime Minister Begum Khaleda Zia. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has said that Begum Khaleda Zia’s passing has created an irreplaceable void, but her vision and legacy will endure. "I am confident that her ideals will be carried forward under your able leadership of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party, and will continue to serve as a guiding light to ensure a new beginning and the enrichment of the deep and historic partnership between India and Bangladesh," he said in a letter to Begum Zia's son and BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman. Indian External Affairs Minister Dr S Jaishankar handed over the personal letter from PM Modi to Tarique Rahman in Dhaka. At this moment of national mourning, PM Modi said his thoughts are also with the people of Bangladesh, who have shown remarkable strength and dignity throughout their history. "I am confident that they will continue to be guided by their shared values, democratic traditions, and a deep sense of national unity, as they move forward in peace and harmony," Modi said. The Indian Prime Minister said he was deeply saddened to learn of the passing away of Tarique Rahman's mother. He warmly recalled his meeting and discussions with Begum Sahiba in Dhaka in June 2015. "She was a leader of rare resolve and conviction, and had the distinction of being the first woman Prime Minister of Bangladesh," said the Indian Prime Minister. Former Prime Minister Begum Khaleda Zia was laid to rest beside her husband and late President Ziaur Rahman at Sher-e-Bangla Nagar in the capital on Wednesday afternoon. She was buried around 4:30 pm with state honour following her namaz-e-janaza at the South Plaza of the Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban. Members of her family, high-ranking state officials, government authorities, foreign guests, diplomats and BNP-nominated politicians were present. Khaleda Zia was given a guard of honour under the supervision of the President Guard Regiment (PGR) before her burial. On behalf of Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus, his Military Secretary, Major General Abul Hasnat Mohammad Tariq, placed a wreath at the grave of Khaleda Zia.    

Fatema, longtime caregiver of BNP Chairperson and former Prime Minister Begum Khaleda Zia, and her family are grief-stricken following the leader’s death. Since 2010, Fatema has been devoted to serving Begum Zia, even accompanying her to prison when required. Her father, Rafizul Mia, said the family was almost speechless with sorrow after hearing the news, and the atmosphere at their home in Shahmadar village of Kachia Union, Bhola Sadar, is somber. Fatema, the eldest of two daughters, lost her husband shortly after marriage and moved to Dhaka with her five-year-old daughter and two-year-old son to seek livelihood. Through a relative, she began working as Begum Zia’s household caretaker in 2010 and has served the leader continuously for 16 years. In a landmark move to reform the insurance sector, the Insurance Development and Regulatory Authority (IDRA) has suspended the licenses of all individual agents in the non-life insurance category, effectively ending personal agent-based commissions. The decision comes into effect tomorrow, January 1, 2026. From the first day of the new year, non-life insurance companies will no longer have any legal basis to provide commissions to individual agents for securing business. The regulatory body issued a circular on December 23, 2025, announcing the suspension of all personal insurance agent licenses under non-life insurers. IDRA clarified that since these licenses will no longer be valid starting January 1, any payment of commissions or financial benefits to these individuals will be prohibited. The directive aligns with Section 58(1) of the Insurance Act, 2010, which states that no commission, remuneration, or honorarium can be paid to any person or institution other than an authorized insurance agent. By suspending these specific licenses, the authority is enforcing a stricter legal framework to curb financial irregularities. IDRA has warned that any insurance company found violating this directive by paying commissions to unauthorized individuals will face severe disciplinary action under existing insurance laws and regulations. All non-life insurers have been formally requested to ensure full compliance with the commission ban. Industry experts believe this move will reduce hidden costs and financial mismanagement within the sector. Besides, eliminate unhealthy competition. Strengthen institutional integrity. Move the industry toward a more professional and corporate-driven business model, said the IDRA.

Thousands of leaders, activists and local residents on Wednesday joined absentee funeral prayers for former prime minister and BNP chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia in Chandpur. The prayers were held after Zuhr at the Asan Ali Government High School ground in Chandpur town, where a large crowd gathered to pay tribute to the veteran political leader. Leaders and supporters of various political parties, including the BNP, Jamaat-e-Islami, NCP, Anti-Discrimination Student Movement and Islami Andolan Bangladesh, attended the prayers. Many participants were seen overcome with emotion, with several breaking down in tears during the service. Khaleda Zia’s janaza held with tears of lakhs of mourners Prior to the prayers, senior BNP leader Salimullah Selim, Safiuddin Ahmed, Hamid Master, Chandpur Press Club President Sohel Rushdi, district BNP leader Munir Chowdhury, district Ganoforum President Advocate Selim Akbar, as well as leaders of the Ganadhikar Parishad and NCP, addressed the gathering. They recalled Khaleda Zia’s political life and leadership, and prayed for the salvation of her soul.    

Tasnim Jara, the independent candidate for Dhaka-9 constituency, has assets worth some Tk 19.14 lakh and her annual income is Tk 7.14 lakh, according to the affidavit she submitted to the Election Commission ahead of the 13th National Parliament election. The affidavit shows that she is not a dual citizen her educational qualification is MSc, her permanent address is at Khilgaon Chowdhurypara in Dhaka and she is 31-year-old, born on October 7, 1994. Tasnim Jara mentioned her profession as physician, teacher and entrepreneur, while her spouse Khaled Saifullah is also the same by profession. Her cash amount is to Tk 16 lakh, while her spouse’s cash amount stands at Tk 15 lakh. Tasnim Jara has jewelry worth Tk 2.50 lakh. in her affidavit submitted to EC, said the amount of her assets worth Tk 19,13,509 and her annual income was Tk 7,13,597 as shown in her latest income tax returns.Tasnim Jara on Monday last submitted a nomination paper with nearly 5,000 signatures of voters to contest as an independent candidate from Dhaka-9 constituency (Khilgaon, Sabujbagh, and Mudga) in the upcoming national election. The Election Commission on December 11 last announced the schedule to arrange the 13th parliamentary election and the referendum on the July National Charter (Constitutional Reform) Implementation Order simultaneously on February 12, 2026. According to the election schedule, the deadline for the submission of nomination papers was December 29, while the last date for the withdrawal of candidature is January 20. The election campaign will start on January 22 and continue till 48 hours before the balloting period (7:30am on February 10). The time for the scrutiny of nomination papers is on December 30-January 4, while the appeals against the decisions of the returning officers can be filed from January 5 to 9 and the appeals will be settled from January 10 to 18.

Bangladesh’s foreign exchange reserves have surged to the $33 billion mark, reaching a three-year high, bolstered by a massive influx of remittances and strategic dollar purchases by the central bank. According to the latest data from the Bangladesh Bank, expatriate Bangladeshis sent $3.04 billion in the 29 days of December 2025. This robust inflow has provided critical support in easing the country’s ongoing dollar shortage and stabilizing the economy. The total gross reserves now stand at $33.18 billion, the highest level since 2022. For comparison, reserves had plummeted to $25.58 billion during the fall of the regime in August 2024. Under the IMF’s BPM6 manual calculation, the current reserves stand at $28.51 billion, which was $20.47 billion. Historical data show that Bangladesh’s reserves first crossed the $33 billion threshold in 2017, later peaking at a record $48 billion in 2021 before facing a steady decline. To maintain market stability and build a safety net, Bangladesh Bank so far purchased over $3.13 billion from commercial banks. The central bank purchased over $1 billion in December alone. Remittances hit $2.93 billion in 28 days of December Bangladesh Bank Governor Dr. Ahsan H. Mansur recently expressed optimism, stating that reserves are expected to reach between $34 billion and $35 billion by the end of December. "We are building our reserves by purchasing dollars from our own internal economy rather than relying on external loans from the IMF or other agencies," the Governor remarked, describing the strategy as a sustainable and "positive decision" for the nation’s financial health.

Bangladesh’s latest solar power procurement drive under the Public Procurement Act (PPA) and Rules (PPR) has emerged as largely unattractive to both foreign and local firms, raising fresh concerns over the country’s renewable energy transition, according to a study. The study, by the Centre for Policy Dialogue (CPD), conducted in partnership with the Australian High Commission in Dhaka, found that weak competition, stringent qualification criteria and limited risk mitigation measures have significantly dampened investor interest in solar power projects tendered since December 2024. As part of reform initiatives, the interim government repealed the Quick Enhancement of Electricity and Energy Supply (Special Provision) Act, 2010, bringing power and energy procurement fully under the PPA and PPR framework. Subsequently, the Ministry of Power, Energy and Mineral Resources (MoPEMR) invited tenders for 55 solar power plants ranging from 10 MW to 250 MW in four lots. The CPD survey released on Tuesday, however, revealed that participation has been strikingly low. Of the 55 packages, 23 received only a single bid, while 13 failed to attract any bids at all. On average, just 1.4 bids were submitted per package. Titled ‘Renewable Energy Procurement under the Public Procurement Act and Rules: Enterprise Survey Findings on Transparency, Accountability, and Efficiency’, the study reviewed the regulatory provisions of the PPA (2006) and PPR (2008), monitored the procurement process for the newly launched solar packages and assessed them against international standards in the power sector. According to the findings, financial capacity requirements emerged as a major deterrent, particularly for local firms. Bidders are required to demonstrate access to liquid assets or credit facilities of at least USD 1.14 million per MW equivalent to USD 57.2 million for a 50 MW plant and USD 114.4 million for a 100 MW plant. While 61.1 per cent of foreign firms found the requirement manageable, 83.6 per cent of local firms said it was difficult to meet. The absence of sovereign guarantees further undermined investor confidence. As no Implementation Agreements are being signed for the solar projects, power purchase agreements lack sovereign backing, affecting bankability. About 68.4 per cent of firms said this negatively influenced their decision to participate. Big push for renewables: 220 MW Sonagazi solar plant gets green light Land acquisition responsibilities placed entirely on winning bidders also discouraged participation, the study noted, citing land scarcity and bureaucratic hurdles. Around 31.5 per cent of firms found this very discouraging, while 27.1 per cent described it as moderately discouraging. According to the study, technical and contractual terms were also flagged as problematic. A fixed annual generation requirement over a 20-year period for example, 109.5 million kilowatt-hours per year for a 50 MW plant was viewed as unrealistic by 76 per cent of firms, given solar panel degradation and fluctuating irradiation. Besides, a provision allowing contract termination with just 28 days’ notice was considered very problematic by nearly two-thirds of respondents. While 91.3 per cent of firms reported receiving tender-related information on time and 66.3 per cent said pre-bid queries were addressed promptly, perceptions worsened after bid submission. Half the firms expected decision-making to be slow, with over 20 per cent anticipating very slow procedures. Overall, 44.6 percent of firms rated the procurement process as inefficient and 18.5 per cent as very inefficient.   Among fully local firms, more than half described the process as inefficient or very inefficient, while all foreign firms surveyed characterised it as inefficient to varying degrees. Concerns were also raised about documentation and transparency, the study noted, citing only 40 per cent of firms found tender documents clear and complete, while many pointed to missing or insufficient technical specifications. Access to information was rated moderately easy by 44.8 percent of firms, though late publication and unavailability of documents on official websites were cited as recurring issues. On transparency, nearly 30 percent of bidders said the evaluation process was only slightly transparent, and 45.5 percent reported facing discrimination. All foreign firms that submitted bids said they experienced discrimination, compared to none among two-thirds of local firms. Despite these issues, a majority of firms, about 59 per cent rated overall transparency as moderate, neither good nor bad. Almost all foreign firms shared this assessment, while most joint ventures described transparency as poor, according to the CPD findings.   Without targeted reforms to procurement design, risk-sharing mechanisms and institutional capacity, Bangladesh’s ambition to scale up renewable energy, particularly solar, may remain constrained, despite policy intentions to improve governance under the PPA-PPR regime, the CPD study says.

Gold prices in the domestic market fell sharply on the last day of the year on Wednesday, with the price of 22-carat gold reduced by Tk 2,741 per bhori, according to the Bangladesh Jewellers Association (BAJUS). Following the latest adjustment, the price of 22-carat gold has been fixed at Tk 224,182 per bhori (11.664 grams). The new rates will come into effect from the morning of January 1, 2026, BAJUS said in a notification issued in the evening. The jewellers’ body said the decision was taken after considering the overall market situation, particularly a decline in the price of pure gold (tejabi gold) in the local market. Under the revised prices, 21-carat gold will sell at Tk 214,034 per bhori, 18-carat gold at Tk 183,416 per bhori, while traditional method gold has been set at Tk 152,857 per bhori. BAJUS said that a mandatory 5 percent government-imposed VAT and a minimum 6 percent making charge set by the association must be added to the selling price. However, making charges may vary depending on the design and quality of jewellery. Earlier, on December 29, BAJUS had last adjusted gold prices, cutting the rate by Tk 2,508 per bhori and fixing the price of 22-carat gold at Tk 226,923. With the latest revision, gold prices have been adjusted a total of 93 times in the country this year—raised on 64 occasions and reduced 29 times. Despite the fall in gold prices, silver rates remained unchanged in the local market. The price of 22-carat silver stands at Tk 6,065 per bhori. Meanwhile, 21-carat silver is selling at Tk 5,774 per bhori, 18-carat at Tk 4,957 per bhori, and traditional silver at Tk 3,732 per bhori. So far this year, silver prices have been adjusted 13 times, increasing 10 times and decreasing only three times. Last year, silver prices were revised just three times. On the international market, spot gold was trading above USD 4,330 per ounce (28.34 grams) on Wednesday. Gold prices reportedly saw a steep decline in a single day, although overall prices remained elevated. Despite the year-end dip, global gold prices stayed on an upward trajectory throughout 2025, rising by more than 65 percent year-on-year. In December alone, gold prices increased by around 4.5 percent.

Police have arrested another accused, who allegedly hanged the body of Dipu Chandra Das from tree after his death in a lynch-mob attack, from Gazipur district in connection in Bhaluka upazila of Mymensingh district on December 18. The arrestee was identified as Nibir Islam Anik, 20, son of Kalimullah of Trishal upazila in Mymensingh district. Police arrested Nibir from Cherag Ali area of Tongi in Gazipur district around 5:30 pm on Tuesday, said Additional Superintendent (Administration) of Mymensingh Police, Abdullah Al Mamun. In a video footage, Nibir was found hanging the body of Dipu and set it on fire after his death, he said. On Wednesday, police produced him before a court seeking a seven-day remand. Police said videos and images spread after the incident showed a man wearing a white shirt pulling Dipu up a tree with a rope. After analysing footage collected from social media the investigation team identified Nibir. Police also said he had been absent from his workplace since the incident. With this the number of arrestees in this connection rose to 19. Dipu Chandra Das, 28, a local garment worker, was beaten to death by a mob over alleged blasphemy in Bhaluka Upazila of Mymensingh district on December 18.

Wall Street drifted lower in light trading early Wednesday as investors prepared for the final opening bell of 2025, heading toward a fourth straight day of losses after a year marked by strong gains alongside lingering uncertainty. Futures for the S&P 500 and the Dow Jones Industrial Average each eased 0.1 percent, while Nasdaq futures fell 0.2 percent. Trading was expected to remain muted as most institutional investors have already wrapped up their positions for the year. US markets will remain closed on Thursday for New Year’s Day. Despite the late-year softness, 2025 proved to be a banner year for equities. The S&P 500 is up more than 17 percent for the year, driven largely by enthusiasm around artificial intelligence and its potential to transform multiple sectors of the economy. That enthusiasm, however, has also fueled concerns. Investors worry that artificial intelligence may not generate enough profits and productivity gains to justify the massive investments poured into the sector. Such doubts have kept pressure on leading AI-related stocks such as Nvidia and Broadcom, which accounted for a large share of this year’s market gains. Valuation concerns extend beyond AI. Many analysts argue that stocks across the broader market remain expensive, as share prices have risen faster than corporate profits. Adding to investor caution is the continued impact of a wide-ranging, US-led trade war, which threatens to push inflation higher. Although the Federal Reserve cut its benchmark interest rate three times toward the end of the year, inflation remains well above the central bank’s 2 percent target. The Fed has said the rate cuts were partly motivated by concerns over a softening labor market. Later Wednesday, the Labor Department is set to release its latest weekly data on jobless claims, a closely watched indicator of layoffs. Minutes from the Fed’s December meeting showed divisions among policymakers and highlighted uncertainty over economic risks ahead. Markets are widely expecting the central bank to keep interest rates unchanged at its January meeting. Sung Won Sohn, a professor of finance and economics at Loyola Marymount University, said global markets are facing growing uncertainty due to inflation pressures, labor shortages and questions about the future path of interest rates. He said central banks need to move cautiously and warned that financial markets are likely to remain volatile as expectations continue to shift. In commodities trading, precious metals remained volatile. Silver fell sharply, giving up more than 8 percent early Wednesday after posting double-digit gains a day earlier. Despite the swings, silver is still up more than 140 percent this year. Gold slipped 1.5 percent but remains up about 66 percent in 2025. In global markets, trading was closed in Germany, Japan and South Korea for New Year holidays. Elsewhere, France’s CAC 40 fell 0.5 percent and Britain’s FTSE 100 lost 0.2 percent. In Asia, Hong Kong’s Hang Seng index dropped 0.9 percent, while China’s Shanghai Composite edged up 0.1 percent. Taiwan’s Taiex gained 0.9 percent and Australia’s S&P/ASX 200 dipped slightly. In energy markets, US crude oil rose 31 cents to $58.26 a barrel, while Brent crude added 28 cents to $61.61. Even so, oil prices remain sharply lower for the year, with crude down about 19 percent since January. US gasoline prices have also fallen by around 6 to 7 percent nationwide.

The Dhaka University (DU) Metro Rail Station was temporarily closed from 7:00 pm on Wednesday due to security measures ahead of Thirty-first Night celebrations. The Dhaka Mass Transit Company Limited (DMTCL) said in a statement that the closure was implemented following a special request from Dhaka University authorities. DU in mourning over death of Begum Khaleda Zia As a result, metro trains will not stop at the DU station from 7:00 pm until the end of service for the day. Trains departing from Shahbagh will run directly to the Jatiya Press Club–Secretariat station without stopping at DU. DMTCL confirmed that services at all other stations will continue as usual, with operations concluding at 10:10 pm in line with the regular schedule.

A high-level delegation from Bhutan, led by Lyonpo DN Dhungyel, Minister for Foreign Affairs and External Trade, paid respects at the state funeral of former Prime Minister and BNP Chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia in Dhaka on Wednesday, following a royal command from the King. The delegation, comprising senior officials from the Bhutanese government, participated in prayers and other ceremonial proceedings, reflecting Bhutan’s formal condolences and respect for the late political leader. Condolence messages from the King, the Fourth Druk Gyalpo and the Prime Minister were handed over to BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman, son of the late Khaleda Zia, by Lyonpo DN Dhungyel. On behalf of the people and the government of Bhutan, Lyonpo DN Dhungyel offered condolences to the people and the government of Bangladesh.

President Donald Trump is not the first US president to want more space at the White House for entertaining guests, according to the longest serving top aide in the executive residence, lending support to Trump’s justification for building a new ballroom. Gary Walters, who served more than two decades as White House chief usher under presidents Ronald Reagan, George H.W. Bush, Bill Clinton and George W. Bush, said every president he worked with raised concerns about the limited space for hosting large events. “All the presidents that I had an opportunity to serve always talked about some possibility of an enlarged area” for entertaining, Walters said in an interview with The Associated Press, referring to his recently published memoir. Trump has spoken for years about building a ballroom at the White House, even before entering politics. In July, the White House announced plans for a 90,000 square foot ballroom on the east side of the complex, initially designed to seat 650 guests at an estimated cost of $200 million. Trump has said the project will be funded through private donations, including his own. The Republican president later increased the proposed capacity to 999 guests. By October, the two story East Wing of the White House was demolished to make way for the project, and in December Trump revised the estimated cost to $400 million, double the original figure. The demolition of the East Wing alarmed historians and preservationists, but Walters said construction and demolition have long been part of the White House’s history. He noted that earlier structures such as conservatories, greenhouses and stables were removed to build the West Wing in 1902, while the residence itself was expanded with a third floor and later the East Wing during World War II. “There’s always been construction going on around the White House,” Walters said. Walters said that when a new president took office, one of his first discussions with the president, first lady and social secretary focused on how many people the White House could accommodate. He noted that even at full capacity, the State Dining Room can seat about 130 guests for a state dinner, while the East Room can hold roughly 300 chairs, fewer if space is needed for television equipment. Trump has frequently complained that both rooms are too small and has also criticized the long standing practice of using large tents on the South Lawn for major events. Walters said the tents created problems, particularly during rain, and often damaged the grass, requiring repeated reseeding. While Walters acknowledged it was jarring to see the East Wing torn down, he said he had fond personal memories of the space. He met his wife, Barbara, at the White House, where she worked in the East Wing as a receptionist during the Nixon and Ford administrations. The couple recently marked 48 years of marriage. Walters’ long White House career began by chance after he broke an ankle in 1970 while serving with the Executive Protective Service, a forerunner of the US Secret Service. Unable to perform regular patrol duties, he was assigned to a control and appointments center inside the White House, a move he later said changed the course of his career. After joining the Usher’s Office in 1976, Walters rose to become chief usher under President Reagan a decade later, overseeing maintenance, construction, renovations, food service and a staff of about 90 employees. He retired in 2007 after 37 years at the White House, including a record 21 years as chief usher, having served under seven presidents from Richard Nixon to George W. Bush.

China has said BNP Chairperson and former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia’s important contributions to promoting Bangladesh-China friendship and the bilateral relationship will forever be remembered. “Khaleda Zia is an old and dear friend of Chinese people and long committed to China-Bangladesh friendship,” said Chinese Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Lin Jian. He said China expresses deep condolences over the passing of Khaleda Zia and heartfelt sympathies to the interim government of Bangladesh and Khaleda’s family. While in office as the prime minister of Bangladesh, the Spokesperson said, she made active efforts to develop Bangladesh-China ties and the two countries established the comprehensive partnership of cooperation featuring long-term friendship, equality and mutual benefit. Khaleda Zia was laid to rest beside her husband and late President Ziaur Rahman at Sher-e-Bangla Nagar in the capital on Wednesday afternoon. She was buried around 4:30 pm with state honour following her namaz-e-janaza at the South Plaza of the Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban. Members of her family, high-ranking state officials, government authorities, foreign guests, diplomats and BNP-nominated politicians were present. Khaleda Zia was given a guard of honour under the supervision of the President Guard Regiment (PGR) before her burial. On behalf of Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus, his Military Secretary, Major General Abul Hasnat Mohammad Tariq, placed a wreath at the grave of Khaleda Zia.

BNP Standing Committee member Nazrul Islam Khan on Wednesday alleged that former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina would never be able to evade responsibility for the death of BNP Chairperson and former Prime Minister Begum Khaleda Zia. “On February 8, 2018, Khaleda Zia walked into jail on her own feet after being subjected to personal vengeance of fascist Hasina. But she came out of prison seriously ill,” he said while speaking at Manik Mia Avenue shortly before Khaleda Zia’s namaz-e-janaza.  Nazrul Islam said Khaleda’s prolonged imprisonment, denial of proper medical treatment and restrictions on treatment abroad had severely damaged her health and ultimately led to her death. “According to doctors at home and abroad, her illness worsened because she was denied the opportunity to receive treatment overseas during four years of house arrest. As a result, this unconquerable leader eventually succumbed to death. So, the fascist Hasina will never be free of responsibility for this death,” he said. Khaleda’s body was taken to a temporary stage set up at the South Plaza of the Jatiya Sangsad around 2:45pm for her janaza. Later, Nazrul Islam Khan read out a brief life sketch of Khaleda Zia on behalf of the party. He explained the circumstances that led her to enter politics and highlighted her long struggle for democracy, her unwavering commitment to democratic values and her deep patriotism. The BNP leader also recalled her contributions to the country and urged everyone to pray for her departed soul. Inspiration Against Fascism Nazrul said Khaleda Zia never bowed before any domestic or foreign force, nor did she compromise on democracy, freedom of expression or voting rights, despite facing repeated repression. “She was jailed during the rule of autocrat Hussein Muhammad Ershad, during the so-called 1/11 regime and again under Sheikh Hasina,” he said. The BNP leader said Khaleda was evicted from her residence linked to the memory of her martyred husband, late President Ziaur Rahman, and sentenced to 17 years in prison on what he described as false charges. “Yet she never compromised with authoritarian politics. This is why she became an enduring inspiration in the struggle against fascism,” Nazrul said. He said Khaleda Zia was now being bid farewell amid the love, respect and prayers of millions of people. “Those who sent her to jail and made her homeless could not live in peace and were forced to flee,” he said referring to former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, who was ousted in a mass uprising on August 5, 2024, and forced to seek refuge in India. Political Journey Nazrul said Khaleda Zia joined BNP on January 3, 1982, to keep the morale of party leaders and activists intact after the assassination of President Ziaur Rahman in 1981. “She began her tireless political journey at a time of national crisis…the entry of Begum Khaleda Zia into politics was sudden, but it was inevitable in the interest of the country,” he said. Despite being the party founder’s wife, Nazrul said Khaleda Zia rose through its ranks constitutionally, first as a primary member, then vice-chairperson, acting chairperson and later elected chairperson through the party council. Of her 43-year political life, he said, she led BNP for 41 years as its top leader, strengthening and organising the party. Role in Restoring Democracy Nazrul said Khaleda Zia led a continuous nine-year movement against Ershad’s military rule and restored democracy through a free, fair and neutral election in 1991. “For this, the nation honoured her with the title ‘Uncompromising Leader’,” he said. The BNP leader noted that she served as prime minister three times and won all parliamentary seats she contested, describing her electoral success as rare both nationally and internationally. “She was the first woman prime minister of Bangladesh and the second in the Muslim world,” he said. ‘Pray for my mother,’ Tarique urges all from Khaleda’s janaza     Governance and Legacy Nazrul said Khaleda Zia introduced landmark programmes for public welfare, including female education stipends, the ‘Food for Education’ programme, and separate ministries for expatriates and freedom fighters. He said Bangladesh gained international recognition as an “emerging tiger” during her tenure. “She used to say, ‘We have friends abroad, not masters,’” Nazrul recalled. Contributions to Liberation War Nazrul said during the 1971 Liberation War, Khaleda Zia was detained by Pakistani forces along with her two young sons from July 2 until victory, while her husband declared independence and served as a sector and forces commander. “The contribution of this family to the Liberation War is unparalleled,” he said. Final Farewell Nazrul said Khaleda Zia used to say Bangladesh was her only address, as she had no home outside the country. “She breathed her last on this soil and will rest forever beside her martyred husband. He expressed his confidence that BNP will move forward under the leadership of Tarique Rahman, following Khaleda Zia’s ideals of democracy, peace, development and public welfare. Yemen’s anti-Houthi coalition is facing renewed instability following a sharp political rift involving Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and rival Yemeni factions, raising concerns over further fragmentation of the war-torn country. The latest crisis erupted after Presidential Leadership Council (PLC) Chairman Rashad al-Alimi ordered UAE forces to withdraw from Yemen, canceled a joint defense arrangement and declared emergency measures, including a temporary embargo and plans for Saudi-backed forces to take control of military camps in eastern provinces. The move was presented as a step to protect national security. However, the decision was swiftly rejected by other PLC members, notably the UAE-backed Southern Transitional Council (STC). The STC and several council members said the PLC is a collective authority and accused al-Alimi of making unilateral and illegal decisions. They reaffirmed the UAE’s role as a key partner in fighting the Houthis, counterterrorism and securing maritime routes. The political fallout coincided with Saudi-led airstrikes on the port of Mukalla and unusually public accusations between Riyadh and Abu Dhabi. Saudi Arabia alleged the UAE supplied weapons to separatist forces without authorization, a claim denied by the UAE, which said the equipment was meant for its own forces and coordinated with coalition partners. At the heart of the dispute are Yemen’s oil-rich eastern provinces of Hadramout and Al-Mahrah, which hold strategic ports and border areas critical to Saudi security. STC forces recently expanded their presence in these regions, heightening tensions with Saudi-backed units. Analysts say the crisis exposes deeper structural divisions within the anti-Houthi camp, where competing regional agendas and local ambitions have long coexisted uneasily. While Saudi Arabia prioritizes border security and stability, the STC continues to push for greater autonomy or independence for southern Yemen. With troop movements reported and political unity eroding, the standoff risks escalating into open confrontation, further weakening the anti-Houthi coalition and complicating efforts to stabilize Yemen after more than a decade of conflict.

China on Wednesday rejected criticism from Japan and several other countries over recent military drills around Taiwan, calling the remarks irresponsible and hypocritical. Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian said Japan, Australia, some European Union institutions and European countries ignored separatist activities linked to “Taiwan independence” and external interference in China’s internal affairs, while blaming Beijing for actions taken to safeguard national sovereignty and territorial integrity. Lin stressed that Taiwan is an inseparable part of China and that the Taiwan issue is purely an internal matter that allows no foreign interference. He said the biggest threats to peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait stem from separatist actions and backing from external forces. The spokesperson said the one-China principle is widely recognized by the international community and forms the political basis of China’s diplomatic relations with 183 countries. He added that Japan, Australia and relevant European nations made clear commitments to this principle when establishing ties with China. China urged the countries concerned to honor their commitments, stop interfering in its internal affairs, and refrain from supporting separatist activities related to Taiwan.
