Different programmes were arranged in the three hilly districts on Sunday marking the anniversary of the peace treaty. 

A colourful rally, arranged by Khagrachhari Hill district Parishad, was brought out from the Jila Parishad premises around 9:50 am which ended at Khagrachhari Town Hall around 10:35, following a discussion meeting on CHT treaty, peace and development.

After inaugurating the rally, Kujendra Lal Tripura, MP of Khagrachhari, said there were misunderstanding and dispute among different groups and communities which have been removed following the treaty. 

“But several sections of the treaty were not implemented yet due to some conspirators. If everyone is united, it was not too late to fully implement the treaty,” he added.

Kongjuree Chowdhury, Parbatya Khagrachhari Zila Parishad Chairman, said the development which has been done in the three hill districts were possible for the treaty.
 

If Awami League-led government comes to power again, the treaty will be implemented fully, he opined.

President Abdul Hamid and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Saturday issued separate messages marking the completion of 21 years of the treaty.

On December 2, 1997, Parbatya Chattagram Jana Sanghati Samity (PCJSS) signed a peace deal with the then Awami League government, led by Sheikh Hasina, ending more than two decades of tribal insurgency and bloodletting in the country's three hill districts.

Then Jatiya Sangsad Chief Whip Abul Hasnat Abdullah signed the agreement on behalf of the government while Joritindra Bodhipriyo Larma (Santu Larma) on behalf of PCJSS.
