At a press briefing, BSMMU director Brigadier General Abdullah Al Harun said the medical board members went to Khaleda’s cabin on the 5th floor of Cabin Block at 11:30am and examined her all the medical papers for 15 minutes.
He said the medical board, headed by Dr Abdul Jalil Chowdhury, examined Khaleda’s health on Saturday. “The five board members today reviewed her all medical reports and papers. They decided that her treatment will now continue as before based on her previous medical documents until the medical board meets further.”
The director said the board may conduct some medical tests of Khaleda at a convenient time after assessing her complete medical history.
Harun said the medical board is likely to examine Khaleda’s health condition further on Monday.
Asked whether the medical board met Khaleda today, he said they waited to see her but could not do that. “The board members only examined her reports and documents.”
The director said BSMMU Prof Tanzina Parvin has been included in the board for temporary period as its member Prof Sajal Krishna Banerjee of Cardiology department is now staying in Barishal.
Replying to a question, Harun said they formed the board as per the High Court order as no one from the executive committees of either pro-BNP Doctors' Association of Bangladesh (DAB) and or Pro-Al Swadhinata Chikitsak Parishad (Swachip) was included in it.
Earlier in the day, Khaleda’s four lawyers, led by Moudud Ahmed, met the BSMMU director and requested him to ensure the BNP chief’s treatment as per the High Court’s direction.
Talking to reporters, Moudud said, “We urged the director to ensure the treatment and medical board of Khaleda Zia as per the apex court’s directions.”
He said they will again move the court if its directions are not followed in ensuring Khaleda’s treatment.
Khaleda Zia was admitted to the BSMMU on Saturday afternoon after prison authorities shifted her there from old Dhaka Central jail for better treatment in response to a court order.
The High Court on Thursday directed the government to immediately admit Khaleda Zia to the BSMMU and form a 5-member medical board afresh for her treatment.
