Dr Kamal Uddin Ahmed, chairman of National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), demanded proper action on Tuesday over the devastating fire in the capital's Bangabazar market.
"We often see that such incidents are investigated, reports are submitted, but no action is taken as per the report," he said while visiting the scene of the terrible fire in Bangabazar.
Permanent Member of the Commission Md. Salim Reza and other officials were present at that time.
Several thousand shops have been burnt and traders have suffered extreme losses. "We called upon the concerned to come forward to provide them with the necessary assistance," the chairman added.
He further said, "By ensuring proper investigation of all the fires and exemplary punishment of those who are responsible for this, such incidents should be prevented."
The devastating fire broke out at the market around 6:10 am and soon spread.
Forty-eight firefighting units were engaged in extinguishing the blaze.
