No public Anzac Day service this year due to COVID-19
Australian High Commission in Dhaka has decided not to host a public Anzac Day service this year due to the global outbreak of COVID-19 saying it is a difficult decision they made.
Anzac Day, falls on April 25, commemorations are a long-standing tradition in Bangladesh, said the High Commission on Sunday adding that they recognise that many Australians and New Zealanders here will be disappointed.
In making the decision to cancel this year’s service, the High Commission considered carefully restrictions on movements and gatherings governments have imposed in Australia and Bangladesh.
The safety and health of participants and guests from Bangladesh and the international community remain their highest priorities, said the High Commission.
Anzac Day is an occasion of utmost importance and solemnity for Australians.
It offers a few moments of personal reflection, when they demonstrate their respect for those who have served and those who continue to serve in our nation’s defence forces, including the 102,000 or more Australians who have died in wars, conflicts and peacekeeping operations worldwide.
The Australian War Memorial will televise a national dawn service that will be live-streamed on Australia’s Department of Veterans’ Affairs (DVA) social media accounts.

AL leader lands in Rajshahi jail over misappropriating OMS rice
A court here on Sunday sent a local Awami League leader to jail in a case filed over seizure of 67 sacks OMS rice meant for sale to the poor at Tk 10 per kg under a government programme from his house.
The accused is- Alal Uddin alias Swapan, president of Pakri union AL unit in Godagari upazila and was a distributor of the programme.
Police arrested him along with the rice on Saturday night, said Khairul Islam, officer-in-charge of Godagari Police Station.

Good boro yield deserves good harvesting: Zahid Faruk
There is a very good boro production in the country this time and that has to be harvested properly before the flood hits the country, said State Minister for Water Resources Zahid Faruk on Sunday.
The junior minister came up with the advice while addressing a meeting of his ministry on taking precautionary measures to control flood in vulnerable areas during the upcoming monsoon.
Zahid Faruk said the projects, especially that of dams in haor areas, need to be there in focus to complete those before the monsoon sets in.
Referring to the shutdown enforced in the wake of coronavirus pandemic, Deputy Minister for Water Resources AKM Enamul Hoque Shameem told the meeting that the boro crop is very important for the country at this time of unprecedented scale of pandemic. “So, farm workers have to be hired from other districts, if needed, for harvesting the paddy.”
He also sought cooperation from local MPs in bringing workers under the current relief programmes of the government.
Enamul Hoque said directives have also been given to ensure social distancing and other safety measures in harvesting.
Electronics manufacturing company Minister to make ventilators
Bangladeshi electronics manufacturing company Minster has taken an initiative to make ventilators in the country due to growing demand following coronavirus outbreak .
The worldwide coronavirus pandemic caused a huge crisis of ventilators or oxygen machines which is extremely essentials for saving lives.
The Ministry of ICT, apex trade body FBCCI, some public-private hospitals and biomedical engineers from BUET are assisting Minister in the process of making ventilators.
Minster Hi-Tech Park Electronics Limited's experienced engineers along with research and development (R&D) team are in overall charge of the process, said a media release on Sunday.
State Minister for ICT Division Zunaid Ahmed Palak said, "With the help of the world-renowned medical device manufacturer, Medtronic, several local electronics manufacturers including Minster have come forward to produce ventilators. We are extremely optimistic that ventilators will be produced within the shortest time in our country.”
President of the Federation of Bangladesh Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FBCCI) Sheikh Fazle Fahim said the Bangladeshi company Minster Hi-Tech Park Electronics Limited has developed a prototype of ventilator which, after the permission of the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare and they will start production of it in full.
