The cell, comprising of officials of the Press Information Department (PID), will instantly monitor real-time rumours being circulated through online platforms and inform about those rumors to media.
State Minister for Information Tarana Halim said this on Tuesday after holding an inter-ministerial meeting at the Secretariat. Representatives of different ministries and organizations and law enforcing agencies and intelligence agencies were present.
Tarana Halim said once rumours are detected properly such contents will be sent to Bangladesh Telecommunications Regulatory Commission (BTRC) for filtering or blocking.
“Our main challenge will be how we determine which contents are rumours” said the state minister adding that the contents which will threaten communal harmony, disturb state security and embarrass the state would be considered as rumours.
Tarana Halim said, “We are not policing the online contents. We are going to inform people the right information only.”
The concerned officials may conduct online monitoring on daily basis or every week the minister said adding that a higher monitoring committee may be formed, if necessary, to watch over the activities of the cell.
