ABMEAB leaders also requested to have a meeting with Industries Minister Nurul Majid Mahmud Humayun at his office.
They said they are exporting accumulator battery to around 69 countries in Africa, Middle East and South Asia after meeting the local demand. This booming sector has the potential to earn a huge amount of foreign currency, they said.
ABMEAB said the sector earned around $60 million last year through exports and emphasised an integrated policy for a balanced development.
The association members identified illegal Chinese products as their biggest problem. They said there were around 30 to 40 unauthorised factories in the country.
“Help us flourish,” Munawar Misbah Moin, president of ABMEAB, urged the government. “Organise recycling management and provide specific zone for manufacturing batteries.”
He said the total size of the local market was Tk 8,000 crore.
Minister Majid urged the association members to remain alert about environmental pollution and health hazards while recycling batteries. “Choose special sites for manufacturing and recycling,” he said. “The ministry will support you.”
“The factories must abide by government rules and regulations and pay VAT regularly. The government is giving a 15 percent cash incentive to exporters in industries sectors,” Majid said. “The government will assist you.”
