Awami League MP Md. Qamrul Islam, elected from Dhaka-2, questioned the tendency of officials like former IGP Benazir Ahmed and former NBR Member Matiur Rahman to evade legal accountability by fleeing abroad.
"Why are those who are accused today afraid of the law? Why do they flee abroad fearing the law?" Qamrul Islam asked today during a parliamentary session on the proposed budget for the 2024-25 fiscal year.
The former State Minister for Law expressed his belief that recent events and accusations against certain corrupt officials are part of a larger conspiracy. "There is sudden propaganda against some corrupt officials, both nationally and internationally," he said.
As an Awami League presidium member, Qamrul Islam emphasized that the flight from legal accountability implies guilt. "Fear of the law means they are corrupt. The allegations against them are true. It is part of the conspiracy, but still, they appear to be true," he asserted.
He stressed that Bangladesh cannot tolerate corrupt individuals in any position and demanded action similar to the crackdown during the casino scandal. "We who do politics are ashamed to see the pictures of all these corrupt people and bank robbers," he added.
Ruling party MP Aroma Dutta reiterated the Prime Minister's commitment to a zero-tolerance policy against corruption. "But some opportunistic people are tarnishing the country's image. They need to face exemplary punishment," she said.
Independent MP Mohammad Huchamuddin Chowdhury from Sylhet also called for justice and punishment for those involved in corruption.
Additionally, Independent MP Akhtaruzzaman addressed the issue of inflation, noting that while the Finance Minister has plans to tackle it, the same model used in the United States was unsuccessful even after five years. "Inflation should be reduced," he emphasized.
The session highlighted the ruling party's and independent MPs' shared stance on combating corruption and the need for effective economic policies.
