During hearing on the remand petition of former industries minister Amir Hossain Amu on Thursday, his lawyer Swapan Roy Chowdhury was physically assaulted by a group of lawyers and driven out of the court premises.
Swapan Roy Chowdhury came under attack when he commented that the speech of Dhaka Metropolitan Sessions Judge Court Chief Public Prosecutor (PP) Omar Faruk is ‘political’.
Swapan Roy said, "I have no objection to the PP's speech, but it would have been more appropriate to deliver such statements on a political platform."
In response, a group of lawyers became enraged, assaulted him, and forcibly threw him out of the court premises.
When the court sought to hear Amu’s statement, he responded, "I am a member of the Dhaka Bar Association and the High Court Bar. I am saddened by the atmosphere here. In this environment, it's better not to make any statement. The case will continue, and I will deliver my statement at a later time."
Amir Hossain Amu remanded for six days
"We are all brothers, and we should stand together. There is no need for division. I hope this kind of atmosphere will not persist," Amu said.
Swapan Roy said, "I was beaten and driven out of the court during the proceedings. Yet, the court took no action. There is no justice here. I demand justice."
