In the final moments of the protest, at least eight people, including a child, were killed and over a hundred others were injured in clashes with police in Kushtia.
The incident occurred around noon on Monday, following an attack on the Kushtia Model Police Station and the Police Superintendent's Office. The police opened fire after being attacked, resulting in the casualties.
According to witnesses, around 12:30 PM, there was a confrontation between the police and protesters at Majampur Gate. The police used tear gas and blank shots to disperse the protesters. After 1:00 PM, a different group of protesters attacked the Kushtia Model Police Station. Initially, the police attempted to disperse them with tear gas and blank shots but failed, leading to the use of live ammunition.
Upon receiving the news, army arrived and evacuated all police from the Model Police Station to safety. Shortly after, the protesters set fire to the police station, destroying all furniture, important records, and other materials inside. Additionally, 8-10 motorcycles parked in front of the building were also burned. The fire service later brought the blaze under control.
Later, another group of protesters entered the Kushtia Police Lines and started throwing bricks and stones. To control the situation, the police used tear gas and shotgun pellets, resulting in many injuries. Those injured were taken to Kushtia General Hospital, where doctors declared four of them dead.
The deceased include Yusuf Ali (70) from the Thana Para area, Abdullah (13), son of Lokman, Babu (40), son of Nausher Ali from Haripur area, and Ashraf (42), son of Kafiluddin. Four more people later died while receiving treatment at the hospital.
Rafiqul Islam, Director of the 250-bed Kushtia General Hospital, reported that four people were brought in dead from gunshot wounds, and four more died later while receiving treatment. A total of 124 people were treated at the hospital, with 94 admitted. Most of the injured were reported to be gunshot victims.
Following the spread of news about the fall of Sheikh Hasina's government, homes of various Awami League leaders, including Joint Secretary Mahbubul Alam Hanif, District Awami League General Secretary Azgar Ali, Hanif’s cousin and General Secretary of Kushtia City Awami League Ataur Rahman Ata, City Awami League President Taizal Ali Khan, Volunteer League General Secretary Manab Chaki, and Kushtia-2 MP Kamrul Arefin, were attacked and vandalized.
Additionally, reports have emerged of the destruction of murals and statues of Father of the Nation Sheikh Mujibur Rahman in various parts of Kushtia city. As of 9 PM, celebrations and unrest continued throughout the city.
