The bodies of a grandmother and her minor grandson were retrieved from a canal on Tuesday a day after they went missing in the water body while crossing it on foot in Rangunia upazila of Chattogram.
The grandmother Rokeya Begum, 50, was wife of Abdul Jalil, of Rajanagar union of the upazila while the grandson was Ismail Hossain, 10, son of Mohammad Hossain of Rangamati. The boy used to live at the maternal father’s house.
Family members said the duo was washed away with a heavy tide amid downpour while crossing the Shialbukka Khal (canal) around 12:30pm on Monday.
They were searched in the canal but no one could be traced, they said.
The body of the child was recovered from Dakshin Khandalia end of the Ichhamati River, which is connected with the canal, under the same upazila around 4pm while the grandmother’s body around 6:30pm in Parua Syednagar end of the river, they said.
Rangunia Fire Service and Civil Station’s Officer Kamruzzaman Suman said though conducted a search operation on Monday, no one was found.
The bodies of the duo floating in the river were recovered in the afternoon, he added.
