Based on secret information, a special team of Rab-3 conducted a raid on the area and arrested Sakhina Begum Sabita, 26. She is doing her law internship at the Dhaka Judge Court.
Police recovered the body of Yougen Hanasie Gonsalves, 22, a second-year degree student of Notre Dame College, with multiple stab injuries from a flat of Sabujbagh on the night of February 12.
Briefing reporters at the Rab’s Karwan Bazar media centre on Sunday afternoon, Commanding Officer (CO) of Rab-3 Lt Col Emranul Hasan said Yougen was got acquainted with Sabita in 2013. They became very intimate in 2017 when Yougen was studying in Notre Dame College.
Sabita was introduced with Advocate Jafar Ullah Rasel, 33, a practising lawyer of the Judge Court in May, 2013 on the Dhanmondi campus of Stamford University when she was pursuing LLB there, he said.
Later, both Yougen and Sabita started working at Poor People’s Help Foundation, an NGO of Advocate Rasel, the Rab official said, adding that Sabita filed several cases against Rasel on various charges where Yougen was shown as a witness.
“Yougen used to demand money from Sabita for making him witness in the cases. If refused, he used to threaten her,” he said quoting the law intern.
Finally, Sabita decided to kill Yougen to get rid of it and per the plan, she rented a flat at Sabujbagh of which Yougen was supposed to share half of the rent.
Sabita together with Yougen entered the flat on February 12 afternoon when she was wearing a burka. She left the flat after killing Yougen with a sharp weapon.
Rab identified Sabita scrutinising the footage of a nearby CCTV.
