The High Court on Tuesday issued a rule asking the government to explain as to why directives should not be given to provide adequate compensation to the family members of the deceased and injured victims of the student-led movement that brought down the last government.

The HC bench of Justice Fahmida Quader and Justice Mubina Asaf issued the rule after hearing a writ petition filed by a victim injured in the movement.

Secretaries to the Home Ministry, Law Ministry, Finance Ministry, Inspector General of Police and the deputy commissioner of Dhaka district have been made respondent to the rule which is returnable in two weeks.

Advocate Roushan Ali stood for the petitioner.

On October 9, Manir Munna, a resident of Uttara, filed the writ petition seeking steps on five points, that included providing compensation to the family members of the deceased and injured victims in the student movement, taking immediate steps to provide adequate compensation to them and to issue a full-fledged and formal list of the deceased and injured victims by the authorities concerned.

It also sought directives to form a committee comprising of government officials, experts and stakeholders concerned on issuing a compensation policy. The committee will form a transparent and clear policy for distributing the compensation.
