Members of the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) have arrested a couple from Chattogram's Sitakunda upazila who identified them as National Security Intelligence (NSI) officials, and swindled money from people.
The arrestees are Mumtaz Begum, 34 and her husband Mujibur Rahman, 46.
They were arrested from Premtola College Road area of Sitakunda on Thursday (May 23), Senior Assistant Director (Mass Media) of RAB-7 Md. Sharif-ul-Alam said in a media statement Friday. RAB also seized 960pc Yaba tablets from their possession.
The specific charge was by a victim, Manjur Alam, who was seeking a job after passing his SSC, when he met Mumtaz Begum at her sister's wedding in 2021. At the time, Manjur came to know, falsely as it turned out, that Mumtaz Begum was the deputy director of NSI's Chattogram unit.
Pretending to be an NSI official, Mumtaz Begum took more than TK34 lakh from Manjur in the name of giving a job in NSI. "And her husband Mujibur Rahman helped her in this fraudulence."
They were handed over to Sitakunda police station for legal action, said the RAB official.
