Two outsiders were badly beaten up by the students of Jahangirnagar University while they were trying to extort ransom and harass two students of the university on Tuesday.
Later, they were handed over to the police.
The incident took place near Mir Mosharraf Hossain Hall and the Botanical Garden at the university on Tuesday evening.
The detainees are Nazmul Hasan, 32, of Khalilpur village in Patuakhali district and a fourth-class employee at the Bangladesh Public Administration Training Centre (BPATC) and Alamin, 28, of Hajiganj upazila of Chandpur district, a daily basis worker at the same institution.
Sources said the victims, Ruhul Amin, a student of the 49th batch of the Accounting Department, and his female friend were intercepted by the accused around 7:30 pm while going to the Monpura area. Nazmul and Alamin snatched their mobile phones and harassed them.
They also demanded a ransom of TK 20 lakh. Ruhul Amin, somehow, managed to contact his friends. Being informed, Ruhul Amin's friends along with the students from Salam-Barkat Hall of JU rushed to the spot and rescued them.
They also beat the accused and handed them over to the university's security section.
The victim female student lodged a written complaint with the university proctor.
Later, Nur Alam Miah, sub-inspector of Ashulia Police Station and university security officials took them to Ashulia Police Station at around 12:45 am.
A case was also filed in connection with the incident.
Professor Alamgir Kabir, proctor of JU, stated as the incident involved outsiders, the security office is handling the matter.
Zefrul Hasan Chowdhury Sajal, security officer of the university, mentioned that the accused were handed over to the police with the permission of the registrar.
