Dhaka, Oct 26 (UNB) – A woman who fell sick after breathing in smoke when a fire broke out in a high-rise in Dhanmondi area died on Saturday morning.
The unidentified victim, who appeared to be around 65 years old, was taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital. Firefighters rescued her and Shaheda, 12, a domestic help, and took them to hospital.
Both had suffered smoke inhalation, said Abdul Latif, officer-in-charge of Dhanmondi Police Station.
Bachchu Mia, in-charge of DMCH police outpost, said the elderly woman died around 11am, shortly after she was taken there.
The fire originated at 9:25am at a 12-storey building on road No 6A beside the Eidgah ground, said Md Russell, duty officer of Fire Service Central Control Room. Three fighting units brought the fire under control at 10:10am.
An electric short-circuit on the third floor sparked the fire, he said.
