State Minister for Disaster Management and Relief Enamur Rahman Friday said the government has taken a step to build 1,000 more cyclone shelters.
"Every time a natural disaster strikes, we find that we do not have as many shelters as we need. So, we have to turn many establishments into shelters," the state minister told the media after visiting a Sitrang-hit dam in Bhola's Monpura.
After making landfall in Bhola Monday, cyclone Sitrang carved a path of devastation across the country, snapping communications, power links and destroying houses. At least 29 people died as the cyclone slammed into Bangladesh's southern coast.
Enamur said 220 new cyclone shelters have already been set up. "The construction work of 423 shelter centres and 550 Mujib Kellas (specially designed multi-purpose cyclone centres) is ongoing."
