Twelve Bangladesh nationals are likely to fly to Bangladesh, along with Afghan female students, on a chartered flight, Foreign Minister Dr AK Abdul Momen said Saturday.

The Bangladeshis reached the US Military base along with Afghan female students, he said.

Earlier, Bangladesh sought effective steps to establish lasting peace in Afghanistan, ensure the safety of Afghan people and evacuate all foreign nationals, including Bangladeshis.

Bangladesh Ambassador to Saudi Arabia Dr Mohammad Javed Patwary made the call as the world's largest organisation of Muslim nations held an extraordinary session in the kingdom's Jeddah on August 22 to discuss the Afghanistan situation, with calls for it not to be turned into a "hub for terrorism."

"Bangladesh stands ready to share its socioeconomic development experiences with the Afghan people once the situation gets normalised," Javed Patwary said at the emergency meeting of permanent representatives of the 57-nation Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC).

The meeting expressed solidarity with the people of Afghanistan and reiterated the commitment of the OIC member states to help them bring peace, security, stability, and development.

It also urged all parties to work towards advancing the interests of the Afghan people, to renounce violence and urgently restore security and civil order throughout the Afghan society, and to establish lasting peace to achieve the aspirations of the Afghan people for stability, decent life, respect of their rights, and prosperity.

Earlier, State Minister for Foreign Affairs Md Shahriar Alam said Bangladesh wants to see lasting peace in Afghanistan that has gone through many ups and downs, noting that the current situation has an impact on South Asian politics.

"Bangladesh will decide the nature of its relations with Afghanistan after keeping close tabs on the situation," he added. "We're ready to help Afghanistan when we feel that there's a stable government in place with people's mandate."

After the US announced it was withdrawing troops from Afghanistan and wrapping up its military operations, the Taliban launched a rapid offensive on government forces, entering Kabul without a fight just two weeks ago.

The Taliban's lightning takeover has sparked a hurried exodus of people associated with the Western intervention in the country. President Ashraf Ghani fled the country; the Western nations have struggled to ramp up the pace of evacuations.
