Dhaka, Oct 31 (UNB) - Customs Intelligence and Investigation Directorate (CIID) members detained two passengers and recovered five gold bars weighing around 500 grams from their rectums at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport on Wednesday.
Based on specific information, a CIID team challenged two passengers -- Shamim Ahmed and Abdul Awal -- when they were about to leave the airport through the green channel of the customs hall after they landed at the airport by a Malinda Air flight from Malaysia around 12 noon, said CIID sources.
During preliminary interrogation, the duo denied carrying any illegal goods.
However, in the face of strict grilling, they confessed at one stage that they were carrying gold bullion inside their rectums, said CIID Director General Dr Md Shahidul Islam.
Finally, the team recovered five gold bars from their rectums applying a special technique, he said, adding that legal steps were taken against the detainees.
