Forest Department officials have recovered yet another Asian elephant's carcass, this time from Chokoria reserved forest area in Cox's Bazar.
The dead elephant was recovered on Saturday from a hole dug in the Chorakhola area of the Harbang union in Chakaria upazila.
According to locals and officials, on Tuesday night a herd of elephants came into the area to eat paddy. One of them got stuck in an electric wire and died by electrocution, they said.
Apparently someone buried the elephant's carcass in a hole. It is the fifth elephant found dead in the country in five days.
The elephant's body was recovered with the help of forest workers today, said Shahin Biplob, Chunti range officer of Cox’s Bazar (south) Forest Department.
Later Upazila Livestock officer and assistant veterinary surgeon of Dulahazra, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Safari Park conducted an autopsy of the elephant, he said.
Quoting the locals, Biplob said the elephant might have been killed by electric shock as there was no visible injury on its body.
A general diary has been lodged with Chakaria police station in this regard, he said.
Meanwhile Supan Nandi, upazila livestock officer, said the elephant aged between 15 to 18 years was male and weighed around 2 tons.
The actual reason of death can be known after getting the autopsy report, he said.
On Tuesday, another young elephant was shot dead at Haitharaghona village in Khutakhali union of the upazila.
Of the other three, two were found dead in Chittagong, and the other in Sherpur.
