Singapore Foreign Minister Vivian Balakrishnan had a telephone conversation with Bangladesh Foreign Minister Dr AK Abdul Momen on Thursday afternoon where they discussed the issues.
They exchanged notes on their responses to the COVID-19 pandemic, reaffirming the need to work together to overcome this common challenge.
Minister Momen expressed gratitude for Singapore's efforts to ensure the health and welfare of Bangladeshi workers in Singapore, including providing food, healthcare, and other essential supplies, as well as ensuring that salaries continue to be paid.
The Singapore Foreign Minister explained to Minister Momen some of the health precautions they have taken, given the cluster of cases at several dormitories there.
Of the 1,481 coronavirus infected people in Singapore, the number of Bangladesh nationals is 244, according to the Foreign Ministry. Steps have been taken to provide them necessary treatment there.
These workers have made significant contributions to Singapore, and Singapore thinks they have a responsibility to provide for their well-being, Balakrishnan said.
Ahead of the Bengali New Year on April 14, the Singapore Foreign wished Minister Momen and all Bangladeshi nationals in Singapore a Happy New Year.
