State Minister for Power, Energy and Mineral Resources Nasrul Hamid has said that 40 percent of electricity will come from renewable sources by 2041.

Such a strategy was adopted in the country's Power System Master Plan (PSMP), he said while addressing at the Bangladesh-UK Climate Partnership Roundtable on Tuesday in the city, said a press release of the ministry. 

Nasrul Hamid mentioned that about 20 million rural people were brought under the electrification facilities through 5.8 million solar home systems (SHSs).

He said the development plan and strategy was taken up, giving the priority to the sustainable development goal (SDG).  

He noted that Bangladesh Energy and Power Research Council (BEPRC) was set up to promote renewable energy while Sustainable and Renewable Energy Development Authority (Sreda) was created to achieve efficiency in energy consumption. 

The virtual meeting was also attended by President of COP26 Alok Sharma, Foreign Minister Dr AK Abdul Momen, Environment, Forest and Climate Change Minister Shahabuddin Uddin, State Minister for Foreign Affairs Shahriar Alam, Thematic Ambassador of Climate Vulnerable Forum (CVF) Saima Wajed and Bangladesh High Commissioner in UK Sadia Muna Tasnim.

Nasrul Hamid said though Bangladesh has good potential for solar power, it is not being possible to implement large scale solar power plant projects due to scarcity of land. 

“We can work together with the countries trying to develop advanced technology to implement large solar projects using less space," he said.
