Despite repeated pleas, the authorities concerned are yet to take any initiative, forcing people to construct a bamboo bridge over the river themselves.
Every year, locals build a makeshift bridge over the river as residents of Hazrakhana and Petbhora villages on the west and three more villages — Talpotti, Niamatpur, Panchmnama – on east side of the river have to use it to reach the upazila headquarters, Sadar upazila and other important places.
Abdur Razzak, a resident of Panchnamana, has been given the responsibility of maintaining the bridge and he charged everyone a certain amount for crossing. He left the village shortly after the Chowgachha Police Station’s officer-in-charge asked him to stop taking money from people.

The bridge is getting old now, causing sufferings to commuters, especially, people involved in farming.
Residents of Hazrakhana village said people once used boats for crossing the river. Later, locals constructed a bamboo bridge. But it has been falling apart recently.
They demanded building a new concrete bridge.

Prof Dr M Mostanisur Rahman, chairman of Narayanpur union, said it is unclear how parts of the bridge had broken off recently.
He assured locals of constructing a new wooden bridge over the river.
