The victims were identified as Salek Mia, 40, and his wife Dilruba, 35, of the area.
Locals said the incident transpired after their neighbour Kalam Mia’s phone went missing from his own residence on Friday afternoon.
On this pretext, Kalam and his three sons - who are known terrors in the locality - had the couple called over on Friday night to undergo occult processes that are still practised in some backward regions of the country (chaal-pora).
At one stage, without any evidence Salek Mia and Dilruba were accused of having stolen the phone, and taken to the room where they would be kept confined till police arrived the next morning.
Ishtiak Ashfaq Rasel, in-charge of Dhamgar Police Outpost, said on information, they went to the spot and rescued the couple around 11am today (Saturday).
Rafiqul Islam, officer-in-charge of Bandar Police Station, said the husband, on behalf of the couple, had lodged a written complaint over the incident with the station.
“We’re looking into the allegation. Torturers must face legal action,” added the OC.
