Türk was the first Slovenian Ambassador to the United Nations, from 1992 to 2000, and was the UN Assistant Secretary General for Political Affairs from 2000 to 2005.
A political and economic union of 28 member states that are located primarily in Europe, the EU’s stated purpose is to promote peace, establish a unified economic and monetary system, promote inclusion and combat discrimination, break down barriers to trade and borders, encourage technological and scientific developments, champion environmental protection, and, among others, promote goals like a competitive global market and social progress.
Apart from his above roles, Türk is a visiting professor of international law at Columbia University in New York City, a professor emeritus at the Faculty of Law of the University of Ljubljana, and non-resident senior fellow of Chongyang Institute for Financial Studies at Renmin University of China in Beijing.
He is the founder of the Danilo Türk Foundation, devoted mostly to the rehabilitation of child victims of armed conflict.
He is also the chairman of the Global High Level Panel on Water and Peace and the chairman of the board of the Global Fairness Initiative, a Washington-based NGO dedicated to economic and social development in developing nations.
In 2016, Türk was an unsuccessful candidate for the post of Secretary-General of the United Nations.
He is also a member of the Club de Madrid, a global alliance of leaders committed to working for peace and democracy including the likes of Bill Clinton, Mikhail Gorbachev, Helen Clark and Romano Prodi.
Ex-Slovenian President to address dialogue on EU’s contemporary relevance Saturday
Foreign affairs experts will get together and share their thoughts focusing on the European Union and contemporary global issues at the next episode of ‘Distinguished Speaker’s Lecture Series’ to be held in the city on Saturday.
Dr Danilo Türk, who served as the President of Slovenia from 2007 to 2012, will deliver the keynote speech on "EU and the Contemporary Global Scenario: A Reflection for the Future" at the symposium that will begin at 10am.
Cosmos Foundation, the philanthropic arm of Bangladeshi conglomerate Cosmos Group, will host the symposium as part of the Cosmos Dialogue at Six Seasons Hotel in the city.
The symposium will be chaired by Principal Research Fellow of the Institute of South Asian Studies, National University of Singapore, Dr Iftekhar Ahmed Chowdhury while Chairman of Cosmos Foundation Enayetullah Khan will deliver welcome remarks.
There will be an interactive discussion after the keynote speech to be delivered by Dr Türk, a Slovenian diplomat, professor of international law, human rights expert, and political figure.
