Experts have emphasised reining in corruption in the energy sector and exploring alternative energy sources to tackle a crisis that looms large.

They called for promoting green energy and focusing more on electric vehicles to cut dependency on expensive fuel oils.

The experts were speaking at "Energy Security: Current Condition and Way Forward" organised by Press Xpress, a media outlet, Saturday in Dhaka.

Recommendations were also made for the inclusion of renewable energy and energy efficiency-based curriculum in secondary level education and the development of institutional and human resource capacities.

Shahriar Ahmed Chowdhury, director of the Centre for Energy Research at the United International University, said the world needs to think again about the environment before using fossil fuels that cause huge levels of carbon emissions and threaten the sustainability of the environment.

Net metering should be made obligatory for new industrial and commercial electricity connections, including those in the economic zones and the export processing zones, he added.

Bangladesh LPG Autogas Owners' Association President Serajul Mawla said: "Autogas is the common name for liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) when used as vehicle fuel. In Bangladesh, the number of LPG-run vehicles is very low."

"We should think about such green fuel as part of our journey towards Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)."

Super Saver Energy CEO Razzak Hossain Razu and Press Xpress Joint Editor Nashir Uddin were also present at the event.
