JU Vice-chancellor Prof Farzana Islam inaugurated the fair by releasing butterflies and balloons in front of the Zahir Raihan Auditorium around 10am.
The JU Zoology department in association with Prokriti O Jibon Foundation organised the ninth edition of the fair with the slogan - “Urley Akashe Projapoti, Prokriti Pai Natun Goti” (Nature gets new pace if butterflies fly in sky).
Addressing the function, JU VC said, “Butterflies are a very important insect for the nature. They are important not only for beauty, but for biodiversity. So we should take initiatives to conserve them.”
Presided over by Convener of the Butterfly Fair Prof Monwar Hossain Tuhin, JU Pro-VC (Academic) Prof Md Nurul Alam, Treasurer Prof Sheikh Md Monzurul Huq, Dean of Biological Science Faculty Prof Abdul Zabbar Hawlader and Chairman of Prokriti O Jibon Foundation Mukit Majumder Babu also addressed the function.
After the inaugural session, a colourful rally, led by the JU VC, was brought out from the Zahir Raihan Auditorium premises that paraded different streets on the campus.
This year, Fahmia Sarkar Barsha got the ‘Butterfly Award 2018’.
Over 50 species of butterflies were exhibited at the fair which drew a large number of people.
The daylong fair also included an art competition for children, quiz competition, debate competition, documentary show on butterflies, live butterfly display at the butterfly park and a short cultural session.
