Mango farmers in Sharsha Upazila of Jashore are facing huge losses due to the nor'wester that hit the area on Thursday (April 27).
The storm caused complete destruction of the mango orchards in the area, with 40-50% of the mangoes falling to the ground.
According to reports, there are 9 thousand hectares of mango orchards, with about 3,140 big and small mango orchards in the Upazila, and almost all gardens were affected by the storm.
Mango farmers are now struggling to recover from this loss, with some reporting losses of up to TK 15 lakh.
Mango farmer Zafar Sheikh reported a loss of TK 10 to 15 lakh due to the kalbaishakhi, while Delbar of Baguri village said that his dream of getting a good price for mangoes this year was shattered.
Sharsha Upazila Agriculture Officer Pratap Kumar Mondal expressed concern over the huge damage caused to the mango farmers in the area, stating that the farmers could suffer significant losses
The extent of the damage caused by the storm is yet to be determined, he said.
On Thursday evening, around 5:30 pm, a Kalboishakhi hit the area. The fallen mangoes covered the orchards like a carpet, leaving most of the orchards with significant losses.
