Executive engineer local Water Development Board office Syed Sahidul Alam Zila said the water level in the Padma River started to increase 10 /12 days ago due to onrush of hill water from India.
The water level in the Padma river increased by 5cm and that of Mahananda river by 10 cm in the last 24 hours, he added.
Low-lying areas of Narayanpur, Alatuli, Shahajahanpur, Charanupur, Debinagar of Sadar upazila and Paka, Durlovpur and Monakosha areas of Shibganjupazila went under water due to the flash flood, he said .
Zila Agriculture Office sources said at least 6,280 hectares of winter vegetables went under water in Shibganj, Bholahat and Sadar upazilas’ river bank areas, causing losses to famers.
Sadar upazila project implementation officer Moudud Alam said over 900 families were marooned in Narayanpur, Alatuli, Charanupur, Debinagar unions of the upazila and over nine metric tonnes rice were distributed among the affected families.
Shibganj upazila project implementation officer engineer Ariful Islam said reliefs were distributed among 400 flood-affected families in the upazila.
