Police have dispersed protesters when they tried to march towards the Home Ministry demanding the arrest of those involved in Wednesday’s attack on ethnic minority students.
The protesters under the banner of "Aggrieved Student-Public" gathered at Raju Sculpture of Dhaka University on Thursday.
During the rally, the protesters carried banners condemning the attack carried out by a group named “Students for Sovereignty”, and demanding justice for the ethnic minority students.
Police obstructed them near Shikkha Bhaban at around 12:30pm when the protest rally was advancing towards the Secretariat, said witnesses.
The law enforcers used water cannons, teargas shells, sound grenades and charged batons to disperse the protesters when they tried to break a police barricade.
On Wednesday, several people were injured in a clash between two student groups over the use of the term “indigenous” in school textbooks, in front of the National Curriculum and Textbook Board (NCTB) office in Dhaka’s Motijheel area.
Earlier, the government strongly condemned Wednesday’s attack on a peaceful gathering by a group of ethnic minority students in front of NTCB.
Meanwhile, the government ordered an investigation into the attack, and two people have already been arrested in this connection.
All miscreants will be brought to justice, says government statement.
