Six trawlers with 1,336 cattle from Myanmar reached Bangladesh through the Shah Porir Dwip corridor.
And 740 cows and 31 buffaloes arrived on Wednesday alone, Teknaf Land Port Customs Officer Gouranga Bhattacharya said. “The government charged Tk500 for each imported animal.”
Cattle trader Md Shahid said animal imports from Myanmar took a Covid-19 for the past several months, creating a supply gap in the domestic market.
“I hope things will change now with the new import of cows and buffaloes.”
Trader Abul Foyez said Myanmar-imported cows and buffaloes meet the demand of different cattle markets including the ones of Dhaka and Chattogram.
To restrict the animal trafficking, Shah Porir Dwip corridor was established in 2003 under the supervision of Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB).
