He made the statement while speaking with reporters after a press conference on International Literacy Day at the ministry concerned in the afternoon.
He said classes and examinations will be held round the year rather than holding annual examination. The new formula will be applied in 100 schools of the country experimentally in 2020.
In the press conference, State Minister for Primary and Mass Education Md. Zakir Hossain said current literacy rate of the country is 73.9 percent which was 72.9 percent in the previous year.
‘’We are not satisfied with 1 percent increase rate. We expect more this year’,’ added the state minister.
However, the country is set to observe International Literacy Day on September 8 with the slogan ‘Multilingual Literacy, Assurance of a Better Life’, he said.
About illiteracy problem, the state minister said 45 lakh illiterates are being given primary education in 250 selected upazilas of the country. Already, 2359441 illiterate people have been educated through this project.
Besides, the government took initiative to provide informal primary education to 10 lakh children who have been deprived of education due to poverty, child labour and geographical barriers, said Zakir Hossain, adding that the government is working to ensure better primary education.
