In the wake of Saturday’s severe political violence, police have cordoned off the BNP's Nayapaltan central office with a crime scene yellow tape.

Amid the party’s hartal, the collapsible gate of the BNP central office was also found locked and no opposition leaders and workers were seen coming to the office area till 1pm on Sunday.

Talking to UNB, police officers present there, said they earmarked the areas in front of the main gate of the BNP office with the crime scene tape inscribed with "Do not cross' to collect evidence from there for investigation.

They said no one will be able to enter the BNP office crossing the earmarked area until their evidence collection process is completed.

Some members of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of the police were seen collecting evidence in the cordoned-off area around 10 am amid the huge presence of police around the BNP office and its adjoining areas.

They were seen collecting ashes, and various objects lying in the area as evidence.

Later, the Crime Scene Unit’s assistant superintendent of police, Mizanur Rahman, told reporters that they collected 10 types of evidence.

He said they would send the evidence to the laboratory.

Earlier on Saturday, two people, including a police constable, were killed and several hundred others injured in violent clashes between law enforcers and opposition activists centring BNP’s grand rally at Nayapaltan.

Half an hour after the start of BNP's much-talked-about grand rally at Nayapaltan, the party's leaders and workers locked into a clash with the police at Kakrail. With the passage of time, violent clashes spread around Nayapaltan, forcing the BNP to abruptly call off the rally.

BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir announced a day-long nationwide shutdown for Sunday before suspending the rally.

According to Dhaka Metropolitan Police, its constable Aminul Islam, 30, was killed and over 100 others were injured during the clashes with the opposition protesters.

Besides, Jubo Dal claimed its Mugda thana unit leader Shamim Molla died at Rajarbagh Police Hospital after receiving bullets at Nayapaltan during the clashes.

In a statement on Saturday night, BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul alleged that the government foiled their party’s grand rally at Nayapaltan through planned attacks after failing to prevent lakhs of people from joining the programme.

He claimed that Mugda thana unit Jubo Dal leader Shamim Mollah was killed in police firing during the attacks on their rally.

Besides, the BNP leader said over 1,000 other opposition leaders and workers were shot and seriously injured.
