A spokeswoman for the AFM told Xinhua that the rescue took place during the night and the migrants arrived in Malta on Tuesday morning.
The group, which sources said appeared to be in good health, asked for help after their boat encountered difficulties in the high seas.
The distress call reached the AFM which acted on the information and a patrol boat was dispatched to render assistance.
Sources said the AFM is currently monitoring other boats in Malta's search and rescue zone south of the little island.
Meanwhile, Alarm Phone, which offers independent support for people crossing the Mediterranean Sea to the European Union, said it had received a distress call from a boat of migrants who claimed there were 97 people of board. However, contact with the boat was lost but the AFM was informed about the boat in distress.
