"Fourteen patients died in the last 24 hours until morning, raising the coronavirus death toll to 328,” Prof Dr Nasima Sultana, the Additional Director General of the Directorate General of Health Services, announced at a regular briefing.
In the last 24 hours 42 labs across the country tested 8,114 samples and so far, 175,406 samples have been tested since March 8, she said.
Among the deceased, 13 were male and one was female. “Five of them were residents of Dhaka city,” Dr Nasima added.
Nine victims were from Dhaka division and five others from Chattogram division.
“Four died in Chattogram city and one each in Savar, Keraniganj, Narayanganj, Cumilla and Shariatpur districts,” she said.
Dr Nasima noted that 13 out of 14 dead breathed their last in hospitals while one other died at home.
“Among the deceased, one was between 11 and 20 years of age, one was between 31 and 40, two were between 41 and 50, three were between 51 and 60, three were between 61 and 70, three were between 71 and 80 and another was aged over 80,” she added.
Another 256 people recovered from COVID-19 across the country in the last 24 hours ,increasing the total number of recovery to 4,373.
Dr Nasima announced that according to the statistics the recovery rate is 19.64 percent and the death rate is 1.47 percent in country.
Across the country 276 more people were taken to isolation while 3,634 were home and institutionally quarantined in the last 24 hours.
Enam Medical College in Savar is the latest to carry out COVID-19 test which increased the total number of testing facilities to 42 in country.
The cases started shooting up from mid-April after the number of tests was increased. The government has declared a countrywide shutdown and urged people to stay indoors to slow down the spread of the virus.
Dhaka city alone has about 58 percent of the confirmed cases.
Meanwhile, the number of cases from around the world has exceeded 4.7 million and the death toll stands at 313,220, according to Worldometer.
Coronavirus was first reported in China in December last year. It has spread to 213 countries and territories around the world.
The World Health Organization declared the coronavirus crisis a pandemic in March.
