In a crackdown on cross-border smuggling, the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) apprehended a woman in possession of 11 gold bars in the Chhaygharia area of Damurhuda upazila, Chuadanga district.
The arrest, made on Sunday, highlights the ongoing efforts to curb smuggling across the Bangladesh-India border.
The individual arrested in the operation was identified as Taslima Khatun, 25, a resident of the Kamarpara area under Damurhuda upazila. The operation was led by the BGB-6 Battalion under the command of Lt Col Sayeed Mohammad Zahidur Rahman, according to a media release issued on Sunday noon.
BGB detains female 'international smuggler' with 2kg gold
Acting on a tip-off regarding an impending gold smuggling attempt to India, a BGB team deployed in Chhaygharia village intercepted an easybike around 11 am. The vehicle, suspected of transporting the illicit cargo to the Indian border, was stopped and searched by the border forces.
Upon inspection, Taslima Khatun was found carrying gold bars with a combined weight of 1.320 kg. The market value of the seized gold is estimated at around Tk 1.3 crore, underscoring the significant financial impact of such smuggling activities.
Following the seizure, a case was filed against Taslima Khatun at Darshana Police Station, and the recovered gold bars were deposited with the state exchequer.
