A corruption complaint has been lodged against the incumbent vice chancellor of Jahangirnagar University. Prof Md. Nurul Alam, and four of his predecessors.
The complainant is Mohammad Ali Akand Mamun, a former professor of the Botany department, who disclosed the VCs’ irregularities at a press conference at the JU Journalists’ Association office on Saturday.
Earlier, he lodged the complaint with the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC), alleging various irregularities and corruption.

Akand Mamun said, “I have submitted a six-page complaint to the Chairman of the ACC with the evidence of corruption on November 1, 2022. I have brought allegations against Prof Farzana Islam, Prof Sharif Enamul Kabir, Prof Khandkar Mustahidur Rahman, Prof Abdul Bayes, and the current Vice-Chancellor Prof Md Nurul Alam.
He said that during the tenure of the last four vice-chancellors, incidents like recruitment trade, admission fraud, leakage of question papers, irregularities and financial corruption, the purchase of equipment, and manipulation of examination results have occurred.
Besides, during the reign of Professor Farzana Islam, massive irregularities took place in the development projects totaling more than Taka 1,445 crore at the university. Meanwhile, the current vice-chancellor was assigned by the university authority to investigate the administrative irregularities and corruption in the university from 2001 to 2009, but he did not do it.

It was learned that Akand Mamun was himself dismissed from the university in August 2014 for violating the code of conduct. Asked about his dismissal, he said, “For speaking out against corruption and irregularities, I was punished in a conspiratorial manner."
When asked about the complaint, the current vice-chancellor of the university Prof Md. Nurul Alam said, “I cannot remember the incident of 2009 at this moment.”
