Physicians at Cox's Bazar Sadar Hospital went on strike on Wednesday protesting assault on doctors and other staff by relatives alleging negligence after the death of a patient.
All medical services including emergency, outpatient, and ward services came to a halt due to the strike, causing patients’ suffering.
Dr. Ashikur Rahman, the hospital's Resident Medical Officer, said a patient died around midnight on Tuesday.
Following the death, the patient’s relatives accused the hospital staff of negligence and attacked doctors and ward boys.
Manik, a patient’s relative, expressed frustration, saying, "My father was seriously injured in a road accident. When we brought him to the hospital, there was no doctor in the emergency department."
Md Irfan, another patient’s relative, shared his concern, "My wife was brought here for delivery this morning. However, as the doctors are on strike she is not getting services and her condition is worsening. If anything happens to her, the hospital authorities will be held responsible."
Ataul Gani Osman, the Additional District Magistrate of Cox's Bazar, said, "We are in discussions with the strikers to find a resolution. We hope to resume all services promptly. The army and police are ensuring security at the hospital."
