Former caretaker government advisor Imam Uddin Ahmad Chowdhury passed away at his residence in Sylhet on Tuesday. He was 97.
He breathed his last this morning around 3:00 am, said his son, Dr Niaz Ahmad Chowdhury.
He left behind one son, one daughter, grandchildren, and a host of relatives to mourn his death.

He will be buried following the second namaz-e-janaza at ShahJalal Dargah Mosque on October 27. The first namaz-e-janaza will be held in his village on the same day.
Imam Uddin Ahmad Chowdhury's career included serving as an advisor to the Shahabuddin Ahmed caretaker government, a role he assumed on January 7, 1991. He was in charge of the Ministry of Commerce.
Born on December 10, 1926, in Sylhet’s Dakkhin Surma upazila’s Daudpur village, he hails from a respected zamindar family. His father, Khan Bahadur Gauch Uddin Ahmad Chowdhury, was a member of the Assam Legislative Council. His ancestor, Hazrat Shah Dawood Qureshi, was one of the 360 Auliya of Hazrat Shahjalal.

He passed the BSc Engineering examination with first class in 1951 as a pioneering student of Dhaka Engineering College. He embarked on a career as an assistant engineer in the Communication and Building Department of the government of East Bengal in 1951.
In 1980, he assumed the role of secretary of the planning division. In 1982, Imam assumed additional responsibilities as a member of the Planning Commission, maintaining this role until 1985. After a brief tenure as the Secretary of the Ministry of Railways, he was appointed the Secretary of the Ministry of Housing and Public Works in October 1985. He retired from this post on January 6, 1987.
Throughout his career, Imam Uddin Ahmad Chowdhury also held the position of chairman at both Agrani Bank and Janata Bank.
