Former ward councilor of Chattogram City Corporation and organizing secretary of Chattagram city Jamaat-e Islami Shamsuzzaman Helali was arrested from his residence at Badurtola Arakan Housing Society in the city on Monday evening.
According to police, there are 39 cases against him on charges of attacking police and vandalizing cars.

“He is one of the prime accused in the case file on the attack on police and vandalizing vehicles during a rally on July 28,” said Ali Hossain, Deputy Police Commissioner of Detective Branch, Port and Wezt zone.
“He was seen leading the vandalism from the front in a video on that day. In addition, he has been charged in vandalism cases that occurred in Bandar Thana on August 23,” he said.

Helali's family and party leaders claimed that his home in Sholakbahar was attacked and extensively vandalized by DB police before the arrest and the main door and windows were smashed and valuables inside the house were damaged by them.
