Thousands of Muslim devotees attended the Jumatul Wida prayers at different mosques, seeking divine blessings for peace and progress of Bangladesh and unity of the Muslim Ummah.

The day's biggest congregation was held at Baitul Mukarram National Mosque in the capital. Khateebs and ulemas delivered sermons, highlighting the significance of Jumatul Wida.

The number of Musollis was higher than other Fridays during the Jumatul Wida, said Mufti Mizanur Rahman, senior Pesh Imam of Baitul Mukarram National Mosque.

Devotees stood for prayer on east and south yards (Sahan) outside the main mosque, he added.

Pesh Imam also informed that devotees offered prayer maintaining physical distance as per the government directives to stay safe from coronavirus infection.

There were hand washing facilities outside the mosque while all of the Muslims entered through disinfection chambers set up outside the mosque, he added.

Bangladesh reported its first coronavirus cases on March 8 and the first death on March 18. As the number of cases increased, the government restricted offering prayers at mosques.

On March 27, Islamic Foundation urged people to keep presence at the mosques limited during the Jum’a prayers to prevent transmission of coronavirus.

Later on May 6, the Ministry of Religious Affairs allowed people to offer prayers, including Tarabi, at mosques following health guidelines.

On May 8, Muslims took part in Jum’a prayers at mosques, a month after the restriction on congregations for coronavirus pandemic.

Bangladesh has so far reported 30,205 coronavirus cases and 432 deaths.
