It will take at least a week to restore internet speeds to normal as a fire that broke out at Khawaja Tower in Mohakhali caused damage of a data centre located in the building and burning down of The International Internet Gateway (IIG).
Emdadul Haque, President of Internet Service Providers Association of Bangladesh (ISPAB) told UNB, “It will take at least a week to restore internet speed to normal due to the amount of damage caused by the Khawaja Tower fire incident. And if the devices burn, it may take longer.”

Until then, the internet may be slow across the country, he added.
Asked what damage had been done, Emdadul Haque said, “Initial information is that Level 3, Max Hub, We Networks, Earthnet and Winstream IIG were burnt. As a result, we have already lost 70-80 percent of our bandwidth. The service of 550-600 ISP organizations across the country is at the stage of closure.”
He added that the extent of the damage can be accurately estimated tomorrow after going there.

“However, we would urge law enforcement to allow us to enter the building at the earliest or to allow the transfer of goods if the building is at risk.”
So that the service can be fixed at the earliest, otherwise it will take more time, he added.
