The Bangladesh Coast Guard fished out a man’s body on Thursday, three days after he went missing in the estuary of the Meghna River after a sand-laden bulkhead collided with a cargo vessel he was on board.
The deceased was identified as Rafiqul Islam, 45, a resident of Shariatpur district. He was heading home to celebrate Eid-ul-Fitr with his family in his native village of Kulkuri.
The accident occurred on May 10 in the Meghna River near the Boro Station area of Chandpur.
Fishermen spotted Rafiq’s body floating in the river early this morning and alerted the Coast Guard. Later, Coast Guard personnel fished out the body and handed it over to Chandpur river police station’s Officer-in-Charge Johirul Islam.
Witnesses and coastguard said the bulkhead had hit the cargo ship while crossing the estuary of the Meghna. The Chandpur Coast Guard have already seized the sand-laden bulkhead named ‘Allah’r Rahmat’.
